Google Nexus One is the best among equals. ⇡ Specifications

Sorry, the Nexus One phone is not available in your country. Such a discouraging inscription meets all our compatriots on the site dedicated to the first "iron" product of Google. Although in reality this is not so - it is not difficult to purchase Nexus One in Russia. And its cost is quite comparable with the price of older models of competitors - from 27,000 rubles, and the average, according to Ya.Market - 30,000 rubles. So wealthy lovers of exclusive toys will be disappointed - in terms of prestige, this model clearly cannot be compared with the iPhone, especially those times when it was not yet officially delivered to Russia.

From a technical point of view, Nexus One also does not represent anything beyond - although it is the most powerful Android communicator currently available, it cannot boast of any unique hardware solutions. So, is Google's new creation really interesting only because it is the company's first mass-produced "iron" product? To answer this question, let's study the Nexus One communicator in detail.

⇡ Equipment

The packaging of Nexus One is a white cardboard box of an elongated shape, somewhat reminiscent of the box of the HTC Hero communicator. However, it is framed much more concisely - on a white background, only two inscriptions: Google and Nexus One. The sides of the base of the box are painted in four colors - red, yellow, blue, green - and echo the Nexus One logo on the package lid. Generally speaking, the packaging could have been much more compact, but the developers preferred neatness - the contents of the box are placed in several compartments, accessories are separated from the device and documentation by cardboard inserts. Well, Google knows how to organize and put everything on the shelves - maybe this is what the designers wanted to emphasize?

The package contains everything you need, but nothing more. In the box, the buyer will find:

  • communicator Nexus One
  • 4 GB microSD card
  • a couple of information brochures and a quick start guide
  • microUSB cable
  • wired headset with remote control
  • power adapter
  • case

It is worth noting that the kit provided to us for testing included an adapter for plugging the power adapter into a European outlet - a useful little thing, because the Nexus One is supplied by "gray" sellers from the USA and has an appropriate power supply. However, no one bothers to charge the communicator from the USB port of the computer, but you should keep in mind that the Nexus One charges twice as fast from the electrical network (according to the manufacturer, the phone consumes 480 mA from the USB port, and 980 mA from the adapter).

It was nice to find in the package and a branded case with the logo of the Android operating system - a robot. The case is soft but thick enough to protect your phone well from scratches and minor bumps. For an additional fee, a plastic stand for the phone is supplied. If you put the phone in it, the shell is automatically activated, displaying the clock and weather, allowing you to quickly launch the music player and photo album, set and turn off alarms. The stand allows not only charging the phone battery, but also connecting an external speaker system (3.5 mm to RCA adapter included). But there are no car accessories at all, which is sad, because some companies already include a 12-V power adapter as standard. Yes, and a car holder for a device with well-developed navigation functions would not be superfluous. Hope only for third-party manufacturers, but given the relatively modest sales of Nexus One (only 80 thousand devices were sold in the first month), their interest in creating accessories for Nexus One is doubtful.

⇡ Design and ergonomics

Before talking about the design of the device, it is necessary to state that the Nexus One hardware is designed and manufactured by HTC. Without a doubt, Google representatives took part in this process, but one should not have illusions about the depth of this participation. There is nothing surprising and, moreover, bad that Google completely shifted the development of hardware to a Taiwanese company. After all, HTC is currently the largest manufacturer of Android devices and Google's leading partner in this area. But only very gullible or poorly informed buyers will be able to convince themselves that in front of him is a unique, the only Google communicator, and not just another NTS model. Moreover, the appearance of the novelty refers to the previous devices of the Taiwanese company. By the way, it is worth noting such a comical moment - in Ya.Market this communicator is called HTC Nexus One.

Nexus One is made in monoblock format. The device is pretty reminiscent of the HTC Hero - primarily the presence of a "trackball" - but it looks much more elegant than it. The communicator does not have any bent parts, its thickness is 11.5 mm, but it seems that it is even thinner, thanks to the case narrowed to the edges and a good color scheme. The combination of silver front and dark gray back panels visually makes the device very light. At the same time, its mass is only slightly less than that of the HTC Hero - 130 against 135 grams. In the hand, the device lies perfectly, creates the impression of solid heaviness. For a shirt pocket, of course, it is too big, but at the same time, it easily - even in a case - fits into a jeans pocket. The laconic design of the packaging is continued in the design of the communicator - it is focused on touch screen control and therefore has a minimum of hardware keys. Under the screen in a row are traditional for Android-devices four keys to undo the last action, call the menu, go to the main screen and search. These keys are touch-sensitive, they have a capacitive-type touch panel in common with the display. The glossy protective panel that covers the screen and the keys below it takes up most of the front panel and looks very bright and beautiful. But only until the first touch - it gets dirty instantly, it is worth touching it with your finger or cheek when talking. So the owner of the Nexus One will always have to have a cleaning cloth with him, otherwise all the efforts of the designers are crossed out by the untidy appearance of the screen. The communicator is equipped with an ambient light sensor that automatically adjusts the brightness level of the backlight. In addition, thanks to this sensor, the device turns off the screen (including the touch panel) when the user brings the communicator to the ear - this not only saves battery power, but also protects against accidental clicks. The developers of models based on the Google operating system never cease to amaze with the variety of options for the location of these keys - for some reason, for each new model they are placed in a new order and, picking up an unfamiliar Android communicator, you always run the risk of “falling out” on the main screen instead of calling the menu. Or even call someone if the device has a separate key for this. With Nexus One, the latter option does not threaten, since there are no separate buttons for controlling telephone functions. The already mentioned ball "trackball" is used extremely rarely. It may seem convenient to someone, but with a high-quality touch screen and a convenient graphical interface, it is difficult to come up with functions for which it would be more convenient to control touches on the screen. But the LED indicator is built into the trackball - blinking, it indicates the presence of system messages.

The side panels are loaded minimally - on the left there is only a volume control key, and on the right panel there are no controls at all. Nexus One is suitable for both right-handers and left-handers - in the first case, the volume control is under the index finger, in the second - under the thumb. It is also worth noting that this key is too sensitive and at the same time is not recessed into the body, as a result, accidental pressings occur quite often.

On the upper side of the case there is a power button and a 3.5 mm audio jack (it is universal, it allows you to connect both a branded headset and regular headphones), and on the bottom there is a microUSB port and contacts used when installing the device in a stand.

Most of the rear panel is a sliding battery cover. Below it are slots for microSD and SIM cards (they cannot be removed without removing the battery), battery, camera lens, LED spotlight and an additional audio speaker. The workmanship deserves the highest praise, which, however, is traditional for HTC. We did not notice any backlashes, creaking - the case is perceived as monolithic and gives the impression of quite reliable. The only feature that can hardly be called a disadvantage is the ability to unevenly close the battery cover - in this case, a thin gap remains on one side. But this is easy to fix - by sliding and re-securing the cover, or simply adding it until the latch snaps into place.

Now, few people remember what a landmark event they considered the overcoming of the 1 GHz milestone by a PC processor. Today it does not look so fateful, but is it any wonder if now even in a phone you can find a CPU operating at such a frequency? But jokes aside - Nexus One is equipped quite seriously. Firstly, there is a powerful Qualcomm QSD8250 processor with almost twice the frequency of most Android models. Secondly, an impressive amount of RAM - 512 MB. The same amount of permanent memory intended for recording programs is, thirdly. And finally, fourthly, an excellent 3.7-inch AMOLED screen. The last one is worth a closer look. 3.7 inches is more than the Apple iPhone or HTC Hero. The manufacturer declares the highest contrast ratio - 100,000: 1 and a response time of 1 ms. The screen really makes an impression - bright, very clear, with rich colors. But the main thing is the screen resolution, it is 480x800 pixels. This is twice as much as the Apple iPhone and HTC Hero (320x480), moreover, this resolution corresponds to a wide screen with an aspect ratio of 16:9 (to be quite precise, the aspect ratio is 16:9.6). Such a high resolution (only Motorola Droid can boast of comparable Android models) requires considerable computing power, by the standards of portable devices, which is why the developers equipped the Nexus One with such a powerful processor. However, even it does not always successfully cope with this "cinema in your pocket" - we have often encountered "slowdowns" of the interface, even when simply scrolling through large lists. Against this background, the rest of the configuration options, although they meet the most modern requirements, look quite conservative. The communicator can work in 3G networks, supports UMTS and HSDPA formats. Wi-Fi (802.11b / g) and Bluetooth 2.1 interfaces are provided, a GPS module and a magnetic compass are available. User files can be written to a microSD card - a 4 GB card is included, but the device is compatible with cards up to 32 GB. The Nexus One camera has a resolution of 5 megapixels. It allows you to shoot both photos (2560x1920) and video (720x480). The camera is equipped with an autofocus system and provides quite decent image quality. There is an LED flash that allows you to shoot even in low light, but even at a distance of about 5 m, it is no longer able to evenly illuminate the frame - so you should not demand too much from a mobile camera. The software allows you to adjust basic shooting parameters, including white balance. Nexus One is equipped with a lithium battery, its capacity is more than 5 Wh. If the communicator is used only as a phone, the battery lasts for three or more days. However, it is worth turning on Wi-Fi or GPS, as the battery runs out before our eyes. There is also a large screen resolution. As a result, with an average usage activity (about an hour of calls per day, occasional Wi-Fi activations, listening to music, surfing the Internet via GPRS), the battery lasts for about two days. And with more active use, the communicator will have to be charged daily.

An active discussion of the "first Google-background" fell on the past New Year holidays. Despite the fact that the device was released by HTC, and the Android operating system has already been used in other communicators more than once, Nexus One is still considered the first device from the giant Google and it is objectively worth recognizing that the "parent" with his "first-born" did not hit the dirt face - the device turned out to be both attractive and functional. The communicator is powered by a Qualcomm® QSD8250™ processor with a frequency of 1 GHz, has 512MB of RAM/ROM, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, USB, GPS, a 5-megapixel camera and supports microSD cards.

HTC Nexus One:: Overview:: Design and features

So, let's start with the exterior of the device or simply the body. The communicator is made in monoblock form factor, has smooth edges and rounded corners, a kind of pebble - naked, which is also nice and comfortable to hold in your hand. True, our "pebble" does not have the most compact dimensions, 119 x 59.8 x 11.5 mm with a weight of 130 grams, but on the other hand, a large capacitive display determines a lot.

To be honest, the positive impression of the device itself still does not let us disregard the dimensions - if the dimensions of the device are comfortable for accessing the menu and working with it, then in conversation and transportation they make themselves felt, but what to do is a payment for the display. Yes, the display, as mentioned above, is made on Nexus One using capacitive technology, occupies the main part of the front panel and has a size of 3.7 inches. This is a high-quality AMOLED matrix with a resolution of 800x480 pixels and the ability to display up to 16 million shades of color. The usability of the screen is good, it clearly perceives touches, text input can be rated as a "four", although it's more about the size of the virtual keys, "multi-touch" is supported and works correctly. Recall that capacitive technology excludes the use of a stylus pen, so fans of this accessory will either have to relearn or look at something other than the Nexus One.

We skipped over the paragraph with case materials a bit, the "dominant" of the device distracted our attention, but having examined it, let's fill in the gap and say that the case is made of a combination of metal and plastic, which harmoniously combine with each other due to texture and color. The front panel, or rather the display and the plastic protection covering it along the contour, is bordered by a gray matte metal, passing to the side faces, capturing the upper edge in half and turning into a small elegant tab on the back panel. The lower part of the front panel, extending through the lower edge to the rear panel, is made of gray soft-touch plastic, similarly to the battery cover.

Let's move on to the structural elements of the hull. The upper part, directly above the plastic of the display protection, contains the arc of the earpiece, covered with a fine mesh, and just below the charge indicator, imperceptible in inactivity. In the lower part, under the screen, there are four touch-sensitive control keys: back, menu, home and search. In addition, already on the metal contour of the front panel edging, there is a white control "trackball" - perhaps the only detail that stands out from the overall strict picture of the body, but at the same time extremely convenient - allows you to navigate through the items and select them by pressing. The trackball has a backlight, which is activated in case of a missed call/message, etc.

The right side face is completely devoid of elements, and on the left there is a narrow strip of a volume rocker with a tight move. On the bottom edge in the center there is a microUSB interface connector, which is surrounded by the contacts of the cradle, and there is also a small microphone hole on the right.

The upper edge of the case accommodates a longitudinal power button, shifted to the left relative to the central axis of the device, as well as a 3.5mm mini-jack audio connector on the right.

Let's turn the Nexus One over and look at its "back" where the Google logos (above) and htc (less pompously, below) proudly flaunt. There are not many elements here and all of them are shifted closer to the top edge - a protruding camera lens in a silver trim, a flash bulb to the right of it, and even to the right a small horizontal cutout for an external speaker.

Putting the device on the palm of your hand with the display down, press the thumb on the back cover tangentially up, and then move it. Having released numerous protrusions from the grooves (we counted 11), the cover can be removed. The battery located under it rests in a recess, covering the SIM card and microSD card compartments with its bottom edge. The card sled compartment is located in a non-hot-swappable location and is half recessed into the chassis panel. The SIM card is completely 2/3 recessed into the case, which in general does not interfere with its comfortable removal.

Thus, summing up all of the above on the exterior and moving on to the software component, let's say once again about the elegant case design, high-quality assembly, which htc is famous for, and a large display / dimensions of the device.

HTC Nexus One:: Overview:: User interface

Operating system nexus One - Android version 2.1 or Eclair. The platform is new, developing, but the "leaps" of versions (1.5 - 1.6 - 2.1) are not entirely clear. But nevertheless, the device from Google is the first device on the updated version of Android, which, among other things, is interesting. Looking ahead, we can say with confidence that there are no cardinal changes, and visually the system has become more interesting, although perhaps this is subjective.

So, according to a good tradition, let's focus on the basic functionality of the new product, given the small platform due to its youth, but the possibility of filling it with third-party software.

Desktop. In fact, there are as many as five of them, and not three, as it was in the same Acer Liquid. To the right and left of the central one, which is always opened with the home button, and the side ones are scrolled with a finger. To understand which of the desktops, and they are traditionally identical in functionality, you are currently using dots in the lower corners of the screen - a clear and at first imperceptible solution. Holding your finger in this field will open a preview of all desktops for quick access, for example, from the first to the fifth.

The background image of the desktop can be any - from pre-installed pictures, or from custom ones, and there are 2 types of pre-installed ones, static and animated. The selected picture is located immediately on all parts of the table and when you switch the screen to the right / left, the right or left edge of the image will be visible. Preset pictures already have the required size, but the custom device offers cropping, which is very cool, because you can select either a certain part of the picture, or adjust the existing one (for example, a photograph) so that the faces do not appear on the “fold” of the screens.

You can add any shortcuts, folders and widgets from the menu to the desktop, these can be either applications or just access to the settings item, for example. Adding shortcuts is extremely simple: open the menu, select the desired shortcut, click on it, hold and drag. Or just click on an empty space on the main screen, and wait for the menu to add shortcuts to appear. The menu is organized into categories to make it easier to find what you're looking for. You can place labels on the table in any order, as you prefer, but there is a grid binding, i.e. all the icons stand in even rows. Large widgets (clocks, pictures) have their own vision of how to place them on the screen, but the user can set the general direction. This means that you won’t be able to place the widget the way you want up to a millimeter, and if in the case of small labels this is justified, at least so that you can’t miss the desired icon with your finger because they are stuck to each other , then there could be more room for user maneuvers. But one under the other label can not be hidden, also a plus.

If desired, you can display a shortcut to the list of contacts on the main screen, or only the list of favorite contacts. But in this case, no actions with contacts, except for scrolling and calling, can be performed.

Widgets are also easy to remove: click on it, hold it, and after a couple of seconds, a basket appears in place of the menu icon, where you should drag the shortcut to remove it from the table.

Convenient widgets look like "news and weather", as well as a wireless interface widget combined with brightness - located by default in the upper parts of the secondary screens, they add useful functionality.

At the top of the screen is a white bar with operational information, which can be opened by pulling down. It contains information about the service provider, when the music player is running in the background, information about the sounding composition is displayed here, etc.

The main menu of the device is located in a tab that pops up from the bottom, and in Nexus One, the menu opening animation resembles a black veil with icons on the desktop. Icons in the menu are sorted alphabetically, first all Latin names, then Russian. Matrix display, 4x4, i.e. 16 icons per screen. The icons are static, although they are already well drawn, which looks advantageous, and under each of them the name of the application appears. Scrolling the menu up and down is provided with animation, and in this case, the canvas of icons seems to be stretched on rollers and pulling it up or down leaves some indication that the list is still going on at the ends of the canvas vertically. Functionally, this is not necessary, but it looks nice.

You can't ignore the lock screen, it enveloping the desktop picture (its central part) leaves the upper information field unchanged, displays the name of the operator's network (elegantly in the upper left corner), a large digital clock, as well as 2 virtual sliders - unlock and disable sound, they should be pulled to the right and left, respectively.

HTC Nexus One:: Overview:: Phone service

The call log is the second tab in the general telephony menu. There are both incoming and outgoing calls, and they are not grouped by contact name. That is, if you called the same number five times, the list will contain five lines with the time of each call (and an indication of how long ago it was, for example, “5 days ago”) and its duration. Directly from the list, you can view the record in more detail and immediately call, send a message or add a number to your address book.

The first tab is the dialer, "buttons". 3 columns of keys, classically contain 4 keys each, and the bottom row is voicemail, call and cancel. If you hold the dialed number, a menu pops up that allows you to copy the dialed number to paste it, for example, into a message.

The third tab - contacts with an unlimited number of subscribers, each of which is invited to add:

  • Surname.
  • 6 types of phone numbers: home, mobile, work, work fax, home fax, pager.
  • 3 types of email address: personal, work, other.
  • 8 types of chat numbers, including Aim, Windows Live, Yahoo, Skype, QQ, Google Talk, ICQ, Jabber.
  • 3 types of postal addresses: home, work, other, with street, city. Region and postal code.
  • Organization: job and other, which indicate the company and position.
  • and, among "optional", a note, a pseudonym, and a website.
  • Well, a picture, of course, what is done in a small window at the very beginning of the "questionnaire". Labels of numbers and addresses can be given their own names, i.e. not be limited to the default split.

If more than one number has been added to a contact, then when you select it in the general list, an additional window will be called before dialing, to which number to make a call, after which you can specify the default number and the dialogue will not be repeated in the future. Unfortunately, you cannot choose another default number for sending SMS. However, when opening a contact, you can send a message to any of the specified numbers - each number has its own button.

Favorites is the fourth tab. The entries that you use most often, or marked in advance, are displayed here.

    HTC Nexus One:: Overview:: Messages

Everything is elementary here: a field for entering a number and a field for text, we type numbers or the first letters of the contact's name, we get possible recipients, of which you can select several. What is inconvenient - there is no way to view the entire phone book directly when choosing a number. The text entry field is also as simple as possible - a small window at the bottom of the screen, while the main field is left for the "sheet" of correspondence. Unfortunately, there are no notifications about glued messages or the number of characters. But it is possible to select (in whole or in part), copy and paste text. By clicking on the menu button, you can add emoticons to the message, view the entire conversation chain with the selected contact, attach attachments, specify the subject (here sms is automatically transformed into mms) and delete the entire message thread. By the way, a message thread is messages grouped by phone number, both sent and received. In the message section, there are no Inbox or Outbox folders at all, everything is added to one list. It would seem unusual, but very convenient. In drafts, by the way, the message is saved only if the recipient's number is specified.

E-mail is placed in a separate menu item and at the first access it is proposed to set up a box: we prescribe all the data, login, password, addresses and ports of servers, after which we can use it. There were no problems with encodings, attachments are accepted regularly, but you can save and view only those that the phone supports. So, the picture in *.jpg format was easily preserved, but the book in *.fb2 is no longer there - the phone did not recognize it as a supported format. Any office documents also do not open. You can add pictures to an attachment, the device automatically opens a folder with images to add them, and does not let you go anywhere else.

Checking mail can be done both manually and automatically every 5-10-15-30-60 minutes (with or without sound notification of new messages). The email client looks standard: the Inbox folder appears first, and when you send or save drafts, the corresponding folders are created. Selecting and editing text works the same as in messages, which is logical.

For a Google mail account, there is a separate item in the main menu, Gmail. Fundamentally, it differs only in design: unlike the classic black background and white letters, everything here is inverted, but more familiar, black text on a white background. Account setup occurs automatically, at the first start, because. almost all Google services are tied to it, from a notebook to a market. Otherwise, there is no striking difference with the "nameless" post office.

HTC Nexus One:: Overview:: Organizer, office

The photo album selects all the pictures from the device's memory and displays them either by date/geotags or in the form of a vertical wall-gallery, but no more than 9 photos per screen. An open image can simply be scrolled vertically with a finger, or a slide show can be started. Additional functions - sending a picture by e-mail, bluetooth, mms, or posting to facebook and picasa, deleting or rotating, cropping or snapping to a map. When rotated, the position of the frame is saved and will be immediately displayed in the last selected position during further viewing.

Alarms are set from the clock app, which actually does not differ visually from the lock screen, except for the weather data located right there. The time and days of operation, signal repetitions, alarm melody (only built-in ones) can be adjusted, you can add vibration to the melody. After that, all alarms are displayed in a single vertical list from which it is enough to simply deactivate them with one tap.

The calendar is separated into a separate application and by default displays the current month in full screen, where the current date is grayed out. The pop-up menu provides access to the agenda (current date), week, settings, and creating a new event. For the last item, you need to set the name and date / time, as well as, if desired, the place, description, repeat period and synchronization with the Google calendar. In the settings, you can hide declined events, select a notification, a ringtone and activate vibration, as well as set a default reminder time.

The default calculator is classic (arithmometer), but you can enable an extended panel with trigonometric functions, logarithms, pi, e, square root and brackets.

Oddly enough, the basic package lacks a file manager, which made it impossible to install applications from a memory card. Perhaps this is how the manufacturer wants to accustom the user to the Market.

    HTC Nexus One:: Overview:: Communications

The communicator is designed to work in GSM 850/900/1800/1900, WCDMA/HSDPA 900/AWS/2100 networks, Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g, Bluetooth 2.0+EDR, GPRS/EDGE and Micro-USB port are supported from communications.

The Wi-Fi module works flawlessly, quickly finds available networks, supports WEP / WPA / WPA2 encryption, allows you to add networks manually and remembers previously connected ones.

Bluetooth supports the A2DP protocol and keeps communication with wireless headphones stable, files are also transferred without problems.

For ease of activation of wireless modules, a widget has been added to the second screen on the right by default, which can activate / deactivate wireless modules with one click, which is extremely convenient.

    HTC Nexus One:: Overview:: GPS

Of the software for GPS, there are only branded maps of version 3.4.0. If we do not take into account the fact that the device pumps out a map of the current location from the Internet, we can say that the application is more than correct. The first launch will be marked by information about innovations in the current version, after which the communicator goes online without prior request.

The settings are familiar to most users of this application:

  • Layers: traffic, satellite, locator
  • Calculation of the route according to the given start and end points (with indication of the vehicle).
  • Search.
  • Locator.
  • My (current) location.
  • A fully capable tool, although third-party applications for the Android platform have already been released and we are now talking about Navitel Navigator, but this is a paid application and the user will determine the need to use it himself.

    HTC Nexus One:: Overview:: Internet

The Internet browser is quite functional and convenient: the screen can be rotated to a horizontal position with the built-in accelerometer for a more familiar look of web pages. There are bookmark lists, history, page search, scaling the page and its full view with an increase in the desired area, it supports working with several open pages (tabs), flash applications, file downloads, and you can also manually select the desired page encoding if the browser does not figured it out myself. Additionally, you can change the text size, increase, block pop-up windows and, if desired, disable the loading of images. Fitting the page to the screen is provided, however, if desired, this option is deactivated.

The start page, as it is logical to assume, is a Google search engine of a mobile type, which is easy to switch to the classic one at the bottom, and select the appropriate service at the top - pictures, local, news, or even get access to all known Google services in the drop-down menu. Changing the main page is easy, just go to the settings.

The use of "multi-touch" when surfing Internet pages is very convenient, although the classic "zoom" with virtual keys has not disappeared either.

    HTC Nexus One:: Overview:: Camera

The application can be launched either by tapping on the icon in the main menu, or by using the corresponding default widget placed on the second screen. The location of the keys transparently hints that shooting is supposed to be done in a horizontal position, which is very convenient given the current dimensions and shape of the case. Another thing is that the lack of a hardware shutter button and not the most convenient location of such a virtual one will force you to either stretch your fingers or hold the device with both hands when shooting.

The application start time, if not lightning fast, is close to it - subjectively it takes 2 seconds to think. The working field of the screen is given over to the viewfinder, on the right is access to the gallery, switching the photo-video mode and the above-mentioned shutter button. Access to the settings is opened by pressing the menu key or by pulling out an additional field on the left side of the screen. Among them:

  • Flash mode: auto, off, on.
  • White balance: auto, incandescent, daylight, fluorescent, overcast.
  • Color effects: none, monochrome, sepia, negative, solarized, pasteurized, underwater.
  • Record location.
  • Photo size: 5, 3, 2, 1 megapixels.
  • Photo quality: excellent, good, average.
  • Focus mode: auto, infinity.
  • Five megapixels is now becoming the norm for modern devices, so it's pointless to be surprised or, even more so, to admire the photographic module in the new product. Moreover, the unprotected location of the lens and the absence of a flash tells us that the manufacturer pays little attention to this element, so we had no special illusions about the quality of the pictures. In fact, everything turned out to be within the expected quality - the camera does not have enough stars from the sky, but there is no negative either, rather everything is on a four.

    HTC Nexus One:: Overview:: Applications

    Google branded apps include:

  • GMail - mailer
  • Google Talk - messenger
  • Google maps - maps
  • YouTube is a popular video service
  • Goggles - search for an object after shooting it with a camera
  • Market - branded application store
  • Additionally installed:

  • News and weather - rss-reader and weather informer combined into a single item.
  • Voice search and voice dialing, which is also combined in a single Car home application.
  • Mp3 Store - music store.
  • Facebook - access and registration in the popular social network.
  • There is no game content in Nexus One at all, probably, it is supposed to be installed independently from the Android Market, to your taste.

    HTC Nexus One:: Overview:: Multimedia

The music player is a library divided into artists, albums, songs and playlists. The player itself displays information about the artist, album and title of the song being played, in the lower part of the display there are control keys, along the edges of them there are counters for the elapsed and total playing time of the track. Under the keys - track fast rewind / status bar. On the top left there is a large field for the album cover, next to it are virtual keys for shuffling tracks and looping playback. There is an opportunity to create your own playlists and put the playing melody on the call directly from the menu or delete it if you don't like it. Supported file format is as follows: aac, amr, awb, wav, wma, mp3, mid.

We mentioned the “iron component” in the preface, but we think that it would not be shameful to repeat this. The heart of the communicator is a Qualcomm® QSD8250™ processor with a frequency of 1 GHz, RAM / ROM memory is the same and is 512 Mb each, external memory of the microSD ™ format (SD 2.0 compatible) is supported, but, alas, there is no “hot swap”.

There are no tests of the platform yet, but take my word for it, the device is smart, it works quickly with applications, there is no “thoughtfulness”, no freezes were recorded during testing at all.

HTC Nexus One:: Overview:: Impressions and conclusions

Battery life is up to 10 hours of talk time or 290 hours of standby time. In practice, when used in the metropolitan networks of MTS and MegaFon, Nexus One works no more than a working day - every evening it required charging, where the device actually stayed overnight. The time for a full charge is certainly less and amounts to a little more than 2.5 hours when using a microUSB cable and a PC.

Speaking about the volume of the ringing signal, we can say that it is good, but not excessive - there is no volume margin as such. On the other hand, in conjunction with a similar, high-quality vibrating alert, we did not have any missed calls. The speaker is also deprived of a volume margin, but overall it is quite good. Complaints about the microphone from interlocutors, if they were received, are extremely rare.

There was no need to think about the reception quality during testing, which means that everything is in order with the signal level of the Nexus One.

So, what happened in the end, to what extent did our expectations regarding the Nexus One come true? Hand on heart, the impressions are twofold: external data and ease of use border on the size of the device and the need to get used to the capacitive screen, stable, to be honest, the platform is still a little alien and unusual, and besides, it is peculiar and fastidious, it requires understanding. The device can be recommended to enthusiasts, because the average user is unlikely to be able to taste all its charms, and probably won't do it. The evolving Android platform does not stand still, which is encouraging and forces competing systems to move towards the consumer, and not just along the path of profit, but it would do well to become a little more “usable”, well, or widespread, we'll see.

Beautiful, fast and almost a cult smartphone from Google

But now Google took and introduced an operating system instead of a phone. And it provided an opportunity for everyone to come to the Open Handset Alliance and take part in its development. Or just make your own devices on this platform - since it is distributed according to the principle of Open Source. And for a while, all the rumors subsided. A lot of Android devices appeared - those that were equipped with a package of services from Google proudly bore its logo on the body. It would seem that everything is clear. But no, before the New Year, rumors about the Google phone flared up with renewed vigor. And this time for good reason. The company nevertheless presented its phone. But is he really like that? Indeed, by and large, it is no different from other Android-communicators. Pay attention to its back part: the Google logo is perfectly adjacent to the HTC logo, which is the manufacturer. As well as on many other communications. So what makes it different from others? Only a name, a successful marketing buzz and a distribution channel. You can't go and buy a Nexus One in a communication store - sales are only through Google's own online store. And even though these sales are still small (although there are no exact data yet), the hype has done its job. Nexus One is now the hottest topic for discussion, even in Ukraine you can already see it here and there. Heroes of television shows, artists and bloggers - many have already acquired this device in one way or another, and its presence is noticeable everywhere. He fulfilled his main task - drawing attention to the platform - one hundred percent. Now let's see what it really is.

    appearance, display

So, we have a brand new Google Nexus One. Outwardly, it makes a very pleasant impression: unusual, thin, besides, thanks to a special coating, it is securely held in the hand. This is not a soft touch in the usual sense, but something similar. The body is mostly plastic, the display edging (which also covers the back with a small belt) is metal. Noteworthy is the excellent build quality, all parts of the case fit perfectly to each other. The attention to detail pleases - the connectors are not covered with plugs, but are neatly “fitted” into the exterior, the earpiece is covered with a metal mesh, the contours of the case are smooth, the elements seem to flow into each other. The battery cover sits very tightly and, apparently, does not intend to loosen over time. A significant part of the visual experience falls on the 3.7-inch AMOLED screen - a huge one that occupies almost the entire front surface. The screen is excellent, the combination of high resolution with matrix manufacturing technology gave an amazing result. If you set the maximum brightness, then even in the blinding spring sun, the screen remains readable. There is simply no more to be desired.

The phone retains the trackball inherited from previous HTC developments. In practice, it is rarely needed (for example, when editing text and in some games), but it perfectly serves as a light indicator, notifying about the arrival of SMS, Bluetooth activity, etc. The second mechanical control is the volume rocker. The phone is unlocked by pressing the power button on the top. There is also a 3.5mm headphone jack. The standard navigation buttons for Android are made touch-sensitive. This causes some discomfort during use. The keys are not available when the phone is locked and occasionally "miss" pressing. Also, the usual buttons for starting and ending a conversation are sorely lacking - everything is at the mercy of the display.

    equipment, functionality

Let's move on to the smartphone computing platform. Already in the first minutes of use, it becomes clear why Google decided to release such a device as Nexus under its brand. Earlier models simply "did not reach" the required level of performance, and the operating system has already reached a qualitatively new level compared to the first versions. The main disadvantage of all previous Android phones is insufficient performance, in particular, there was always not enough memory, users had to use special programs to clear it, the interface was often “thinking”. The Nexus does not have these problems at all: it is equipped with a 1 GHz Snapdragon processor and 512 MB of RAM. You can forget about cleaning up memory and completely trust preemptive multitasking. The increase in performance is felt in everything - from the response time of the interface to "heavy" 3D games. In addition, each next firmware, in addition to new functionality, is also distinguished by additional optimization of the kernel, due to which we get an increase in performance. As a result, Nexus One resources are enough not only for programs, but also for various “cute trinkets”, like, say, live wallpapers - animated desktop wallpapers that respond to user manipulations (for example, water that diverges in circles when touched, or “ living" model of our Galaxy). The increase in performance is felt in everything, even in the work of the built-in camera, which “clicks” almost instantly. Unfortunately, there is no shutter button here, its role is played by a virtual substitute on the display. Accordingly, autofocus is induced by itself, and it cannot be corrected. But in defense of this idea, we note that it usually works adequately. The device shoots like for a five-megapixel camera “without pretensions” more than adequately, in good lighting you can get quite decent images. Full size examples can be viewed in the gallery.

Sample photos of Google Nexus One

As for the software, there are no additional add-ons on the interface, it's pure Android. Read about the improvements and changes in version 2.1 below.

    Google Nexus One Menu

    New in Android 2.1

The latest version of Android OS 2.1 has a lot of innovations. The first example is the voice recognition function for English-speaking users, it works great, correctly parsing even our "non-canonical" pronunciation. The address book has been completely redesigned: by clicking on the contact icon, you can choose from an extremely wide list of possible actions - call, write an SMS or letter, chat in GTalk, Skype, ICQ, Facebook, get directions to the subscriber's address in Google Maps or other navigation program. The system provides synchronization of the address book with Facebook and even the VKontakte network. Version 2.1 has support for synchronization with Microsoft Exchange servers (but only mail, they forgot about the calendar), as well as simultaneous work with multiple accounts in Gmail. In the mail client, the ability to switch accounts was accordingly added.

For a month and a half that have passed since the start of sales of the device, several software updates have already been released for it, one of which, in particular, added support for multi-touch technology in the browser, Google Maps, photo gallery. There is also a fresh version of maps with support for the new Google product - Buzz and the Google Goggles application, which allows you to recognize the picture from the camera and find information about the object visible on it. For America, free Google Navigation is also available. Support for Flash has already been announced, but so far it does not work in current versions of the software.

    role model

The phone very quickly won the hearts of Android supporters and enthusiasts all over the world. Numerous forums are already devoted to it, alternative firmware are available for it. Of course, the number of sophisticated users turned out to be relatively small in relation to the scale of the mass market - according to statistics that appeared on the Web, no more than 100 thousand phones were sold in the first month, which is quite modest for a flagship model. Many factors influenced this result: the almost complete absence of direct advertising of the phone, its unavailability in regular stores (it can be ordered only on the Google website), a limited number of countries from which orders are still accepted (USA, England, Hong Kong, Singapore).

But it appears that Google's Nexus lineup tactics aren't about chasing sales speed records. But it perfectly matches the overall strategy for promoting the products of this brand. In the process of promoting the Google search service, money was not invested in advertising, but directly in the search engine, and this led the company to the No. 1 position in the world. Today, Google is revealingly giving Nexus One to famous bloggers, authors of popular YouTube videos, participants of the TED (Technology Entertainment Design) conference, which gathers influential people from all over the world. It is possible that very soon this will lead to an explosion in demand for the next products of the Nexus line.

Google has officially announced that the Nexus One is the flagship, the first model in a series of smartphones from this brand. Photos of the future Nexus Two, more focused on a business audience, are already circulating on the Web. According to rumors, Motorola will now become its manufacturer.

The Nexus One is by far the most advanced of all Android smartphones and is in fact already seen as the benchmark for a top-class product in this segment. Soon it will appear in another guise - HTC Desire, which is almost a complete analogue of Nexus One, but equipped with a proprietary HTC Sense interface, and most importantly, it will be distributed through the usual HTC sales channels, which implies an extensive geography and more emphasis on traditional retail. As a result, the product will be more popular not only in terms of accessibility, but also conceptually: Sense, in principle, allows you to fully use your smartphone without installing additional programs. Similar devices from Acer and Sony Ericsson are also on the way.

Will the Google-branded phone impact the Android smartphone market? By itself, it probably will not change the balance of power among manufacturers and platforms, as it is not the embodiment of a new concept, but rather an example of the implementation of existing functions. But other players in the Android segment will strive to reach its level, and this is the direct impact of the first smartphone from Google on the market. In Ukraine, this smartphone is officially unavailable, and the situation is unlikely to change in the near future. But this does not stop enthusiasts who, despite the high price and lack of warranty support, are ready to purchase it. Those who want to have an official phone should wait for the HTC Desire.
