How to adjust plastic windows yourself. How to adjust plastic windows yourself The plastic doesn’t close tightly

For now plastic windows are popular products for many users. Almost every apartment has PVC windows installed in at least one room. During operation, various problems may appear. For example, the handle may not turn, the windows may stick, or there may be other problems with closing and opening the windows. To solve these problems, you need to know how to adjust plastic windows.

Plastic windows may stop functioning properly not only due to long periods of use. If we take into account the average service life of windows (more than 15 years), then the owners of these double-glazed windows are unlikely to encounter any difficulties. But problems happen, and very often. If it is not possible to call a specialist or you do not want to spend extra money on repairs, then you can do the basic work yourself PVC adjustment windows that will get rid of a large number of problems.

For what problems and when is adjustment required?

You need to adjust plastic windows yourself as needed. If a certain problem arises, you need to immediately look for effective ways to eliminate it. Even if the initial “calibration” is done correctly, problems may arise later. They are associated with deformation of fastening elements, improper operating techniques, violation of tightness, structural integrity, etc.

By using self-adjustment plastic windows can eliminate the following problems:

  • The handle turns with difficulty or does not turn. The cause of the problem is a lack of lubrication or the sash being lowered. To solve the problem, you need to lubricate all moving elements, then remove the plug. Use a screwdriver to determine where the moving roller is moving incorrectly. After identifying the problem, you need to tighten the screw with a screwdriver.
  • The handle is loose. Problems arise with fittings all the time. They are resolved in a couple of minutes. Here is the plate, which is located under the plug. It rotates 90 degrees. To solve the problem, you need to tighten it with screws using a suitable screwdriver.
  • When torn off, the middle part of the sash catches the frame. Often the reason lies in the vertical or horizontal displacement of the sash. The situation can be resolved by calibrating the sash lift.
  • The lower part of the sash is sagging, and when opening it touches the frame. This problem is quite common and occurs when sash windows sag. This problem can be solved by vertical or horizontal adjustment of the sash lift.
  • Blowing. In cases where a slight draft begins to be felt from under the insulation, you need to independently adjust the sash pressure.

If you cannot independently and accurately understand the reason, you need to seek help from a professional. It's better to pay for minor repairs than to replace broken parts later.

Tools required for adjustment

To adjust plastic windows yourself, you need a few tools. When setting up, use:

  • Pliers.
  • Phillips screwdriver size 3 or 4.
  • Star and Phillips screwdriver bits (often they should be marked “TX” or “T”).
  • A set of hexagons (a 4 mm hexagon must be included in the kit).
  • Regular machine oil and universal WD-40 aerosol.

Basically, only a hexagon is used; in everyday life it is called a furniture key. This metal small hexagonal rod has L-shape. For convenient use it can be S-shaped.

Star attachments are needed to work with certain models of fittings. Because of this, it is better to use several similar attachments. Craftsmen often fasten fittings with ordinary screws using a Phillips screwdriver, so this is what you will need for adjustment.

The adjustment process is greatly simplified in case of malfunction sliding windows. In this option, all work comes down to setting up the roller carriages, which are intended for attaching the sash.

The main adjustment points for metal-plastic windows

There are a total of 5 adjustment points on the window that allow you to correct settings. Let's look at how to adjust plastic windows:

  • The upper part of the sash is adjusted horizontally in the area of the upper hinge.
  • The lower angle of the sash in the area of the lower hinge is adjustable horizontally.
  • The place for adjusting the vertical position of the sash is located in the lower hinge.
  • In the area of the eccentric locking pin, the pressing force of the sash is adjusted.
  • Another way to adjust the sash pressing force is to adjust the lower locking pin.

Using the above points, you can calibrate all possible window positions. All manufacturers use standard window models, so if your plastic double glazed windows not made according to individual order, there will be no difficulties in adjusting each point.

Immediately after searching for these points, you should check them for deformation. If deformations are present, then you should immediately contact a specialist. If garbage is found, you should remove it and try again the action that was previously performed with difficulty.

Adjusting the pressure of the window sash to the frame

If the plastic windows you are using do not close properly, and the sashes are not pressed tightly against the frame, then you will need to adjust the plastic windows yourself.

This work is performed using a hex key, which must be turned in one of the directions:

  • Down or up from the frame.
  • Left or right.
  • Adjustment of sash pressure density.

In some cases, problems with closing windows occur due to shrinkage of the house. When inspecting the window, you need to pay attention to the eccentrics that are installed around the perimeter and are part of the window fittings. They will move and move past the pressure pads being used when you try to turn the handle.

To navigate the degree of pressure, you need to pay attention to the marks on the eccentrics. If the lines point towards the street side, then the clamp is weak, but if on the contrary, then the clamp is too tight.

If the clamping mechanism is located in the same place as the hinges, then adjustment is made using a screwdriver or hexagon. The choice will depend on the design of the design fittings.

You can determine by eye the degree of pressure on the window sash by how the tongue is located on it. The more it is extended, the higher the degree of pressure. If the hexagon is rotated counterclockwise, the sash forces will be reduced.

In cases where no option allows you to press the sash to the frame, you need to call a qualified specialist who can solve this problem faster.

Adjusting the hinges

In most cases, plastic window designs are not equipped with a window. The ventilation process can only be carried out after the sash is set to a certain mode.

Too much big gap between the sash and the frame in extreme cold will contribute to strong cooling in the room.

It is necessary to find a “golden mean” so that the gap during ventilation is somewhat smaller. Therefore, you can adjust the pressure window hinges so that there is no draft. First you need to determine the location of the blower. If this place is located near the bottom hinge, then a hexagon is needed. You need to remove the cap and start adjusting according to the instructions.

The sash must be set, the handle must be turned to ventilation mode and the top hinge must be pressed. At closed window it is impossible to reach the screw responsible for the degree of clamping of the loop.

Some window designs have special blockers that disable the ability to open the window. If the handle dangles, this will only make the problem worse.

You need to slightly lift the plastic plate located next to the base of the handle, and then rotate it 90 degrees. After this, the screws will be visible, which need to be tightened with a screwdriver until they stop.

If the handle does not turn well, then you need to lubricate the fittings with machine oil: eccentrics, hinges, clamping mechanisms.

You need to check the fittings and window structure at least once a year, even if nothing bothers you about its operation. Adjustment will allow you to quickly solve problems yourself.

Winter and summer mode

Plastic windows often need to be adjusted for the winter. It is in winter that complete sealing is necessary. In the summer you can let in some fresh air. This is achieved by adjusting the pressure density of the sash. Everything is done in an elementary way.

When adjusting the fittings, you should remember that the summer mode corresponds to a weak window closing pressure, and the winter mode corresponds to a strong or standard one. If work is carried out in winter, then first you should set the standard position and check whether there is airflow. On new PVC, you should not immediately pinch the rubber bands. In this position, the rubber seal installed around the perimeter is strongly pressed. Over time, this causes it to lose its elasticity.

If you immediately set the maximum pressure level, the rubber will deteriorate faster. As a result, the next time it is displayed on plastic windows winter position, you will find the rubber all in cracks, and there will still be blowing from under the sash. This means that the seal needs to be replaced. This is not a very difficult process, but it will take more time.

Let's highlight the basic requirements for PVC windows to last as long as possible. different times of the year:

  • Do the adjustments yourself correctly so that you do not have to repair the plastic window.
  • Insulation materials must be replaced promptly when worn out.
  • In summer, loosen the pressure.
  • In winter mode, the fittings should not be left for the whole year.

Cleaning the fittings from accumulated dust

Adjusting fittings and repairing plastic windows is associated with high-quality care of the structure. It is necessary to provide deep cleansing in hard to reach places from accumulated dirt. If you don’t clean your windows in a timely manner, sooner or later you will have to repair them again because their functionality has been compromised due to debris. The process of repairing plastic windows is very labor-intensive due to the weight of the structure, so it is better to carry out this work with assistants.

To put the elements in order, use the following adjustment scheme:

  • The sash is removed from its hinges, and the overhead frame elements are inserted.
  • The top axle is removed.
  • The sash is removed from the lower hinges.
  • Carefully set it aside.

Then the area of the sash is inspected and the screws attached to it are unscrewed. The parts of the mechanism should be well lubricated; it is advisable to use specialized solutions that are convenient to apply with a brush. After completing the procedure, the structure must be dried thoroughly using cold air from a hair dryer. fresh air. Lubricant is applied to each driving mechanism, after which the fittings are assembled into reverse order, and then installed in its original place. Be sure to apply lubricant to each window hinge after adjusting the plastic windows.

It is technically easy to adjust a plastic window. Enough to use detailed instructions, and follow the recommendations themselves in strict order.

The process of adjusting window fittings on plastic windows may depend on the manufacturer. There are varieties that are adjusted with screwdrivers located on the side of the handles. They can be adjusted using a hex key.

Setting all positions for the adjustment points can be done even without experience. The only requirement is to be careful. If calibrated incorrectly, the plastic window may stop functioning correctly, after which you will have to call a technician to re-adjust it.

Metal-plastic windows have become an integral attribute of almost every modern home. For many, maintenance of plastic windows - repair and adjustment - is quite simple process. To perform these steps, you can watch a video that tells you how to set up PVC windows yourself, study the design of window fittings and have a minimum set of necessary tools.

Adjusting PVC windows does not require any complicated special knowledge. You just need to study in detail the operating instructions for window fittings, which are provided with each plastic product or located on the official website of its manufacturer.

Tools and materials

To adjust and preventive maintenance of plastic products, a few simple tools are enough:

To prevent wear of moving parts of fittings and sealing rubber bands They must be cleaned and lubricated at least twice a year. To perform these operations, the following materials are required:

  • Solutions for removing dust and dirt.
  • Lubricant: machine oil, special impregnating composition.
  • Silicone-based softener for rubber seals.
  • Soft cloth, brush or brush, hair dryer with cold blow function.

Introduction to the structure of fittings

In order to independently repair a plastic window or adjust it, you need to know which hardware elements need to be used to solve specific problems that arise. The main parts involved in the operation of window fittings are:

  • locking pins that regulate the degree of pressing of the sash to the frame;
  • upper and lower hinges, responsible for moving the sash in horizontal and vertical planes;
  • window handle that ensures the operation of the entire mechanism.

Before you start adjusting plastic window blocks, you need to find the location of all the necessary mechanisms on their sash. Clamping elements or locking pins are located along its entire perimeter and are round or oval protrusions. The hinges on which the window sash is attached to the frame differ in their structure and method of adjustment.

The direction of opening the sash has a certain significance in the process of setting up the operation of the fittings. Adjustment of the left and right loops occurs in the mirror direction. The handle is usually located in the center of the window sash and has 2-3 opening positions. Its attachment point is closed decorative overlay, which should move to the side quite easily.

Preventive Maintenance

To ensure long and stable PVC work windows requires preventive measures:

  1. Adjustment of window pressure winter-summer.
  2. Cleaning and lubricating all hardware parts subject to friction.
  3. Maintenance of sealing rubber.

Window pressure adjustment

Adjusting the degree of pressure of the window sash to the frame must be done due to the need to change the tightness of the window depending on climate changes and to prevent premature wear of the sealing rubber due to constant strong pressure.

To adjust plastic windows winter - summer, you need to prepare suitable tool. Its choice depends on the shape of the clamping pins. For moving oval clamps you will need pliers. Depending on the shape of the hole on round clamping parts, use a screwdriver or a hexagon.

All plastic windows have three degrees of fit of the window sash to the frame:

  • The middle (standard) clamp is installed by default at the window manufacturing plant and corresponds to central position trunnions It is usually used in the autumn-spring period.
  • Weak pressure ensures air flow into the room in summer due to the formation of microcracks.
  • Strong pressure ensures complete sealing of the plastic product. It is installed during the winter cold.

The algorithm for adjusting the window by clamping is quite simple:

  1. All locking elements are found at the end of the open window sash.
  2. Use the tool to turn the parts or clockwise ( winter clamp) or counterclockwise (summer pressure).
  3. All clamping pins are adjusted identically.
  4. Close the sash and check the degree of pressure. The check can be performed using a sheet of office paper, which is placed between the sash and the frame. When pressed firmly, the sheet should not move. In the summer position of the locking mechanisms, the leaf can be pulled out from under the sash.

Cleaning and Lubrication

Window fittings are subject to natural wear and tear, which may occur faster due to improper use plastic product or untimely cleaning and lubrication. There are two options for cleaning the working mechanisms of PVC windows:

  • Cleaning and lubricating parts accessible in the open or tilted position of the sash.
  • Deep cleaning of the fittings with the sash removed from its hinges.

The second option is quite labor-intensive and requires the participation of two people, as well as certain professional skills. Therefore, it is better to entrust it to specialists.

The first option for cleaning plastic products is easy to do with your own hands:

Caring for sealing rubber

Sealant (sealing rubber) - important detail plastic window, which ensures its tightness and reliable clamping. Rubber can lose its properties as a result of improper installation and use of the window, insufficient care, or become unusable over time.

To prevent this from happening, you must:

Replacing the sealing rubber on most windows takes little time and can be done by yourself. An important condition is to replace the damaged seal with an identical one, since products from another manufacturer may not fit the groove located on the window frame. To replace the old seal, use a screwdriver to remove it from the groove, and insert a new one into it. During installation, the sealing rubber is lightly pressed into the groove using a tool. After replacing the element, close the sash and check the degree of pressure and the presence of airflow between the sash and the frame.

Operational problems

Main problems problems that arise during the use of plastic window blocks are:

  • blowing between the sash and the frame;
  • sash sagging;
  • incorrect operation of the window handle or its breakage.

Blowing

This problem is the most common when using plastic products. It occurs for several reasons:

  1. Poor quality of product or installation.
  2. The degree of pressing of the sash to the frame is incorrectly set.
  3. Sagging of the sash due to shrinkage of the building, during operation or due to its large mass and size.

All problems that arise with a plastic product during the warranty period must be resolved by the window company that installed the product. Especially if the problem is related to product or installation defects. Any independent intervention may become a reason for the seller to refuse warranty obligations.

There are many videos on the Internet with detailed instructions on how to tighten plastic windows so that it does not blow. Often, to eliminate a draft, it is enough to move the clamping pins to the winter position or change the seal. If, after these manipulations, the window continues to blow, then the problem is associated with sagging of the sash and a decrease in contact between the locking lugs and the strikers located on the frame. This problem requires a lot of effort, but can also be easily solved on your own after studying the instructions and watching the video tutorial.

Sagging of the sash

On the Internet you can find detailed instructions on how to adjust plastic windows yourself. The video tells in detail about the stages of work and the features of performing operations. Adjusting the window using hinges is carried out in several stages:

If, after making all possible adjustments to the sash, it still does not fit tightly to the frame, then you can try to repair the plastic window rather than adjust it yourself. To do this, use a screwdriver or screwdriver to unscrew the mating part of the locking latch in the area of the handle and place a gasket up to 4 mm thick under it. It must be made of plastic or wood. These additional elements inserted into the side and bottom of the strike plate, which is put in place and screwed with a self-tapping screw.

Replacing and adjusting a window handle

The window handle is a wearing part of window fittings. During the operation of the window, it changes several times to a new or more functional model.

To replace the handle, you need to turn it to the position corresponding to the opening mode. After this, carefully, without using sharp objects, move the decorative trim to the side and unscrew the fastening screws using a screwdriver. Rocking it slightly, remove the handle from the hole and replace it with a new one, performing all the above steps in reverse order. When purchasing a new handle, it is important to take into account the width of the profile system, since the length of the pin of the required product will depend on this. If this value does not correspond to the width of the sash profile, the handle will not work correctly, which will lead to its rapid wear and problems with the functioning of the fittings.

In some cases, it is not replacement but adjustment of a loose handle that is required. To do this, move the decorative trim aside and tighten the fastening bolts with a screwdriver.

It will become much easier to independently adjust PVC windows if you carefully study the simple instructions and watch videos made by professional installers window designs. However, in the event of a serious breakdown, it is imperative to seek the help of qualified technicians. This will help avoid major complications and save your budget.

Windows made of metal-plastic are installed in almost every home. Over time, they need to be adjusted, as the handle begins to show through between the sashes, breaks, or rotates. Sometimes the window does not open well or rubs against the frame.

These defects are not significant and can be quickly repaired. Adjustment of plastic windows is carried out independently by tightening or loosening the bolts.

Winter and summer operation of plastic windows

winter, standard, summer. The mode change is changed by pressing the sash. In summer, the pressure density is reduced, which allows air to circulate between the street and the room.

In winter, the pressure is increased, creating complete tightness. This way the heat in the house is preserved. Installing the window in standard mode is the best option.

. An eccentric (trunnion) is a protruding structural element of an oval or spherical configuration. Thanks to this detail, you can adjust the pressing density of the sash.

For work, use a simple screwdriver or pliers; for some models, a hex wrench is suitable. Which tool to choose depends on the shape of the trunnion.

To eliminate a draft, it is enough to change the degree of pressure of the trunnion. You need to clamp the oval eccentric with pliers and turn it in the desired direction. If the pin is round, insert a simple screwdriver or hexagon into the slot, then change its position.

There are designs that, in addition to standard protrusions, have eccentrics in the upper and lower parts. To prevent the frame of such models from warping, during adjustment all trunnions are set to the same position.

If the windows are new, do not pinch the rubber seal, otherwise it will quickly lose its elasticity, although its warranty period is 15 years.

First, the fittings are set to standard mode. This position should eliminate the draft. If the window is old, the mode is set to “winter”, and it still blows, then install a new seal. Having examined such an elastic band, you can see that it is cracked.

How to adjust a window so it doesn't blow

. This causes drafts. This happens even if the trunnions are clamped all the way.

Subsidence causes the structure to become distorted and the locking protrusion loses contact with the counter plate. When turning the handle, the trunnion does not go beyond it, the sash remains unpressed.

The problem remains the same if you replace the rubber seal. In order for the protrusions to go beyond the plate, the sash is moved to one side or the other.

This is done as follows:

  1. To check which area of the window is not holding, it is inspected for the location of the trunnions.
  2. They are closing.
  3. The closed sash is pulled towards itself by the areas with protrusions. If there is weak contact, the sash will move. If it is tightly closed, it will remain motionless.
  4. After checking, choose which loop needs adjustment: lower or upper.

Bottom Hinge Adjustment

The lower part of the window is adjusted using the lower hinge. The sash can be pressed in two ways: adjust the hinges vertically or horizontally.

Work order:

  1. To carry out horizontal twisting, the loop is opened. There is an adjustment hole there. This type of adjustment allows the sash to be moved closer to the hinge or moved further away.
  2. The tools used are an asterisk or a hex wrench. To move the sash further, the selected tool is inserted into the hole and turned towards you. If you turn the key in the other direction, you can move the lower corner closer.
  3. Turn the key gradually, regularly checking the window for opening.
  4. Horizontal adjustment method is not suitable, if the screw is unscrewed all the way, but there is still blowing from under the sash. In this case, it is necessary to restore all mechanisms to their previous state and tighten the vertical screw.
  5. The sash is put into ventilation mode, then the protective cover is removed. Its edge is pulled back 0.2 cm and pulled up. There is a vertical screw under the cover. A No. 4 hexagon is inserted into it. To lower the sash, the bolt is turned counterclockwise with a tool. To raise the sash a few millimeters, turn it in a different direction.

Adjusting the top hinge

The non-closing corner of the window on the top side is adjusted by twisting the top hinge. To make work easier, it is recommended to open the sash at an angle of 90°.

If the angle is made smaller, the adjustment process will be more difficult:

  1. The adjustment screw is located on the side of the sash. It allows you to move the sash closer to the hinge mechanism or move it away from it. The window is equipped tilt and turn fittings. If you move the sash too tightly, it will not open well. Therefore, the adjustment is made so that there is a small gap of 2-3 mm between the sash and the window frame. To check the mechanism, the window is opened and closed each time after turning the key half a turn.
  2. There is also a screw installed on the turning mechanism. It is tightened if the standard adjustment does not help. Externally, the screw looks like a tongue. In some designs it looks like a locking loop.
  3. To get to the screw, the window is placed in two modes at once: first it is opened, then it is secured with a lock. Open swivel mechanism It will work if you pull the blocker all the way. Holding it in this position, turn the handle to the micro-ventilation mode. This will open the mechanism designed to hold the sash.
  4. The protrusion located on the bar is made to resemble a hexagon. To adjust the level of fit of the upper section of the window, the protrusion is rotated to the required position.

What to do if the plastic window does not close

. This often happens when there is a strong distortion of the window frame.

Then use a hex key to unscrew the counter panel and install a plastic lining under it. It helps close 2-3 mm of free space. The thickness of the lining should not exceed 4 mm.

Structural repair:

  1. The thrust element is removed by first unscrewing the screws.
  2. Linings are prepared from a fragment of plastic. Better use material white, to match the frame. One part is placed on the side face, the second - on the bottom side. This arrangement will move the stop deeper into the sash by 3 mm.
  3. The stop is mounted on top of the pads and secured with a self-tapping screw. Excess plastic is cut off with a knife.
  4. The window is checked for quality of closure.

The sash frame is flexible and moves easily. If the pads do not help eliminate the draft, you need to move the frame by 4-5 mm. One glazing bead is removed from the offset side.

Then a flat ruler or other narrow-shaped wooden object is placed between the glass unit and the frame. To remove the frame, use a plastic spatula. A narrow lining is inserted into the formed gap, then the spatula is pulled out. The bead is mounted in place.

What to do if the upper corner on the hinge side does not close

When the top corner does not close tightly where the hinge is located, a large load is placed on the hinge and the sash sags over time.

When opening the window for ventilation, the handle is locked horizontally. In this position, the sash does not fully open along with the top edge of the frame.

Often the bottom hinge breaks because it bears the entire weight of the structure. To restore functionality, you need to pay attention to the lock, which prevents the window structure from breaking during improper operation.

It can be disabled depending on design features window:

  1. If the blocker is made in the form of a pin, it is pressed against the seal. If it is a metal tongue installed near the adjusting handle, it is placed parallel to the sash. Some designs do not have a blocker.
  2. Having removed the locking system, the upper corner is firmly pressed against the frame, closed, and the handle is turned to the “closed” position.
  3. The design is checked for functionality by sequentially turning the handle to all positions.

Adjusting and replacing handles

The handle is the main window mechanism. Its regular use leads to various types breakdowns.

You can adjust and replace it yourself, without resorting to the help of specialists:

  1. Loosening. The handle is secured with two bolts covered with a decorative plate. Using these fasteners, the loose part is tightened. The fittings are pulled towards you, then turned 90°. The bolts are tightened with a screwdriver. The handle is put in place.
  2. Tightturn. Clogging is one of the reasons why the handle turns tightly during window operation. Sometimes the fittings do not return to standard modes. To fix the problem, you need to unscrew the part and clean all moving elements with lubricant. First, the mechanism is cleaned with an aerosol, then lubricated with machine oil. When the window is pressed tightly, the handle does not fully move to the “closed” position. To adjust it, all the pins are loosened at the same time.
  3. Jamming. When the locking mechanism is activated, the handle gets stuck in one position. The mechanism protects the fittings from damage when setting the ventilation mode. The tab holds the window, preventing it from opening. If at this moment you turn the handle incorrectly or sharply, the lock will be activated and it will get stuck. To adjust the mechanism, you need to disable the lock: to do this, open the sash, press on the protective bar, and turn the handle itself. When the metal tongue sticks out, it is installed parallel to the frame. Before turning the handle, the tongue is pressed.

If a standard handle breaks, it can be easily repaired with your own hands.

Work order:

  1. Decorative protection is removed from broken fittings.
  2. Remove the old handle after unscrewing the bolts.
  3. Installing new fittings.

Conclusion

To maintain warmth and comfort in the house, it is necessary to regularly check the condition of the windows and carry out timely renovation work. Experts recommend lubricating window fittings with grease annually.

Thanks to these simple steps, it will break less often, and the window structure will last a long time.

Nowadays, the popularity of plastic windows is no longer in doubt, because they not only have high quality, but also an affordable price. Not to mention that they are easy to use and provide excellent noise protection. But despite this, even the most quality windows require maintenance, so from time to time it is necessary to call a specialist to adjust them. Many people wonder: “Is it possible adjustment of plastic windows without calling the master? It's actually not as difficult as it might seem. Therefore, after reading this article, you will be able to cope with minor problems yourself. Remember that this way you save not only money, but also time. Now let's move on to the instructions themselves and consider the main problems.

Most often you may encounter the following types Malfunctions that can be easily eliminated on your own:

  • When closing, the sash touches the frame from the side or bottom
  • The sash does not fit tightly enough to the frame
  • Wear of striker plates
  • The handle is blocked when the sash is open in the “closed” mode, the window does not close
  • The sash is closed, but the window does not close, the handle does not turn
  • The handle is broken
  • The handle is very difficult to turn

For repairs we may need the following tool:

  • Pliers
  • Hexagon (4 mm)
  • Screwdrivers (phillips and flathead)
  • Set of "stars"

General principles for adjusting window sashes

The sashes of almost all modern PVC windows can be adjusted in three planes, thanks to which you can achieve correct position sash in the frame and along the entire perimeter of the sash to achieve the optimal degree of pressing of the seals.

Methods for adjusting sash fittings, appearance its individual elements and the tool used for adjustment may vary depending on the manufacturer, but in general the general adjustment scheme looks as shown in the figures below.

Picture 1 - General principles PVC window adjustments

Figure 2 - General scheme plastic window adjustments

Figure 3 - Various options window adjustments

Now let's look at what needs to be done to fix the problem in each of the above cases.

How and how to adjust a plastic window for various malfunctions

1. When closing, the sash touches the frame from below

In this case, you need to move the sash in the direction of the top hinge and up. The procedure is approximately as follows:

2. When closing, the sash touches the side of the frame

IN in this case you need to move the sash in the direction of the hinges, to do this:

3. Wear of striker plates

To check the striker bars, open the window and inspect them. Most often there is one strip on each side along the perimeter of the window. If wear is noticeable on one of them, this may indicate that there is unevenness in the fit of the window in the frame. In order to solve the problem, you need to open the window, remove the plastic plugs from the adjusting bolts (they are located on the lower and upper hinges, on the same side as the sash) and use a hex key (four mm) to loosen the bolts themselves. After this, adjust the position of the top half of the window. The adjusting screw will help you with this. First, you need to adjust everything relative to the frame “left - right”, and then go to the bottom screw and adjust the movement “up and down”. It is very easy to monitor the accuracy of the adjustment. To do this, you just need to open and close the window until you understand that the sash fits tightly and evenly into the frame.

4. The sash does not fit tightly enough to the frame

From the side of the handle to side end On the sash there is a system of eccentrics, with the help of which the pressure density to the sash frame is adjusted. They may have different appearance depending on the manufacturer, but the principle of operation is the same in all cases.

Figure 7 — Adjusting the pins of plastic windows

By rotating the eccentrics with pliers or a hexagon, you can adjust the required degree of pressing of the sash to the frame. IN summer period It is recommended to use weak pressure, and strong pressure in winter. If you need to adjust the degree of pressing of the window sash to the frame from the hinge side, this can be done using the adjusting screw located on the lower hinge (Figure 8).

Figure 8 — Adjusting the window pressure

If this sash is a tilt-and-turn sash, then you can additionally adjust the sash pressure using the top hinge. To get to the adjusting bolt located on the scissors near the top hinge (Figure 9), you need to open the sash and then, after first pressing the lock (Figure 11), set the handle to the ventilation mode. If you need to press the sash against the frame, you need to rotate the bolt clockwise; accordingly, you can loosen the pressure by rotating the bolt counterclockwise.

Figure 9 — Adjusting the pressure of a PVC window

Some types of fittings are regulated exclusively with the help of responders located on the side of the handle (Figure 10 - a). The position of the strike plates is adjusted using a hexagon. To increase the pressure of the window sash to the frame, you need to move the bar towards the street. The frame on the hinge side also has hexagon-adjustable clamping mechanisms (Figure 10 - b, c). The more you extend the tongue, the more the sash will be pressed against the frame.

5. The handle is blocked when the sash is open in the “closed” mode, the window does not close

In order to prevent damage to the hardware mechanisms, the handle can only be turned when the sash is closed. To prevent accidental turning of the handle when the sash is open, there are special lockers located under the handle at the end of the sash. Depending on the manufacturer, they also come in various types(Figure 11). Before unlocking the handle, you need to press the lock.

Figure 11 — Locking in “closed” mode

6. The sash is closed, but the window does not close - the handle does not turn

If the handle does not turn after closing the sash, this means that the clutch of the lock with the counter element located on the frame does not work. This problem can be solved in two ways:

  1. Using the adjusting screw located under the lower hinge, slightly move the sash in the direction of the counter part of the lock (Figure 6)
  2. Having slightly loosened the fastening, insert any thin plate of hard material between the counter part of the blocker and the frame.

7. The handle is broken

In order to replace the handle of a plastic window, you need to slightly pull the handle cover towards you and turn it 90 degrees (Figure 12). Next, unscrew the screws, remove the old handle and install a new one in its place, set the trim to its original position.

8. The handle is very difficult to turn

This usually happens due to insufficient lubrication. To prevent such a situation, it is necessary to lubricate the fitting mechanisms at least once a year. For these purposes, you can use aerosol lubricants or machine oil.

It is worth noting that control technical condition and lubrication of all mechanisms of window fittings must be carried out even in the absence of visible defects at least once a year.

If you are interested adjustment of plastic windows, It's useful to remember that:

  • it is necessary to periodically check the condition of the rubber seals to prevent their wear;
  • if you remove decorative plastic plugs, do it carefully, as they are very fragile; make sure not to deform them or crush them during the main work;
  • if your frame or itself is deformed window hole, then you won’t be able to adjust the windows yourself;
  • If you are not sure that you can do everything yourself, it is better to entrust the work to a trusted specialist. This way you can be sure that everything is done with high quality and you won’t need to redo anything.

I suggest watching a video that clearly shows how to adjust a plastic window with your own hands.

VIDEO: How to adjust a plastic window (PVC window) with your own hands

Despite the fact that everything modern windows, made of PVC, wood or aluminum, are made with a large margin of safety, and the fittings on them are highly reliable; periodic adjustment and maintenance of the structures is still necessary. The design of the window fittings is such that adjusting the window with your own hands is not difficult. To cope with this task, you need to have necessary tools, and also know the main adjustment units.

What tools will you need?

Before you start adjusting the window, you need to prepare your tools. You will need:

  • Hex key 4 mm. This tool is used for configuration first. The key can be of any shape, for example, curved in the shape of the letter “L”. Professional keys are curved on one side to make them comfortable to hold.
  • Star-shaped screwdriver bits (marked T, TX). They will only be required for some models of fittings, but it’s better to purchase them just in case.
  • Phillips screwdriver (size 3 or 4). Usually the fittings are attached to the window with bolts using a regular Phillips screwdriver. In order to replace the handle or adjust it, you need a Phillips screwdriver. The easiest adjustment option is adjustment sliding structures. In this case, you only need to adjust the distance of the roller carriages.
  • Pliers or pliers.
  • WD-40 aerosol or machine oil to lubricate fittings.

Main components that need adjustment

The sash can be adjusted vertically and horizontally. In the first case, adjustment of the lower loop is required, and in the second - the upper part of the mechanism. To adjust the sash pressure, adjust the fastening in the middle part of the sash on the side of the handles. Also, the sash pressure is adjusted at the bottom of the window. To adjust the lower angle of the sash horizontally, the lower hinges are adjusted.

Without the help of a specialist, you can not only adjust the window structure, but also eliminate some simple malfunctions. Let's look at how to do this.

Problems with the window handle

Replacing a window handle or installing a handle with a lock

Handles with safety locks may be required in the nursery, as well as in other areas of the house where he lives. Small child. This important detail will not allow the baby to open the window on his own. To install a new handle, you need to remove the old one by unscrewing the plug and unscrewing the bolts. Then you need to carefully swing the handle and pull it out. The new handle is placed in place of the old one in the same position and secured with bolts.

If the handle is wobbly

To eliminate the malfunction, simply tighten the fastenings of the part further. To do this, you need to release the bolts hidden under the plug - a rectangular cover located under the handle. The plug must be pryed at the top and bottom and rotated 90 degrees. Under it there are two bolts that need to be tightened with a screwdriver. In order to move the plug, do not use sharp objects, as this may damage the profile.

The handle sticks or does not close completely

First of all, you need to understand what caused this problem. Maybe the handle mechanism needs lubrication or cleaning. The second reason may be the maximum fixed clamp on the sash. In this case, it needs to be weakened.

Cleaning the handle mechanism is not difficult. To do this, you need to remove it, clean it of dirt with a brush or vacuum cleaner, lubricate it and put it back. For lubrication, it is recommended to use WD-40 with a nozzle that easily penetrates into the recesses of the structure. In general, oil or aerosol is recommended to be used whenever adjustments are made to window structures made of PVC.

If the problem with the handle is due to excessive clamping force, then it is necessary to loosen it. To do this, adjust the eccentrics at the end of the sash on the handle side, and also adjust the bolts on the hinges.

If the handle is jammed

Even if the handle has stopped moving, there is no need to be alarmed. This situation is not a reason to replace the fittings. As a rule, the handle jams due to a lock that does not allow changing the position of the window (opening upwards) when the sash is open. To solve the problem, just manually move the lock lever.

The locking lever is located at the end of the sash on the handle side. What does he look like? The lever may have the form of a plate, which is screwed to the end and moved at an angle to the seal if the sash is open. The second option is a clip that fits onto the seal.

Adjusting the sash pressure

With the onset of cold weather, the windows can be adjusted so that the seal lets in as little cold air as possible. A tight fit of the sash to the frame ensures reliable protection by cold. It is also necessary to adjust the degree of pressure of the sash to the frame in cases where the seal has become thinner, worn out, and there has been blowing from the window.

Professional craftsmen recommend adjusting the clamping device twice a year. The day before winter frosts The pressure needs to be increased, and with the onset of heat - reduced. If a high degree of pressure is maintained throughout the year, this can damage the fittings due to constant stress in the structure, as well as shorten the life of the insulation, which, under constant strong pressure, becomes thinner and loses its heat and sound-proof properties.

To adjust the pressure, you need to find oval-shaped cylinders at the end of the sash, which are called trunnions. There are corresponding holes on the frame into which the trunnions fit when the handle is turned. This design ensures that the sash is pressed against the frame. The clamping force is adjusted by moving the holes on the frame or turning the trunnions.

To increase the clamping force, you need to turn the eccentric with its protruding part towards inside window. To reduce the force, you need to do the opposite operation, that is, turn the trunnion with the protruding part outward.

How to adjust eccentrics? There are three configuration methods. Fittings from different manufacturers may vary slightly, so the method of adjustment will depend on its features.

  1. The trunnion has a slot for a flat or slotted screwdriver.
  2. The eccentric must be slightly moved away from the surface on which it is located and rotated. This can be done with pliers or simply with your hands.
  3. The eccentric can be turned using pliers with little force.

To check the possibility of adjustment, you can try to change the position of the trunnion in three ways in turn. In this case, it is advisable to start from the first to avoid serious damage.

It may happen that, despite all efforts, the end cylinders cannot be adjusted. In this case, it is necessary to change the position of the mating part or the holes on the frame.

Using a hexagon, you can unscrew the bolts and move the hook towards the street to increase the pressure or towards the room to loosen the fit of the sash.

When the adjustment manipulations on the end side closer to the handle are completed, you can adjust the fit on the opposite side, where the hinges are located. Let's consider an option for a window that can open in ventilation mode. Here are the basic steps for adjusting the fit of the sash of such a window.

After removing the trim cap, you will see two bolts for a hex screwdriver, as well as one bolt located at an angle of 90 degrees to the plane of the window. It is with him that you will need to manipulate. By turning the bolt clockwise, you can strengthen the clamping force; by moving the screwdriver counterclockwise, the clamping force will weaken. Adjustment is made using a hexagon. It is more convenient to make the settings with the window closed.

To adjust top part shutters, you need to open the window and find a device called “scissors”, which allows you to open the sash from the top (in ventilation mode). Next, you need to find a clip or lock lever on the end of the window sash, press it and hold it in this position. Then turn the handle to the vertical position, which it occupies when ventilating. After this, the sash will come out of the upper groove and will hang on the lower mount and on the “scissors”. This will allow you to get to the bolt that regulates the pressure. It is located on the underside of the device that holds the sash. By turning the bolt you can adjust the degree of fit.

So, adjusting the fit of the sash is quite simple and does not require excessive effort. You will be able to independently regulate the level of heat saving in the room depending on the outside air temperature.

The sash touches the window frame

This problem occurs quite often. It is also not critical; you can deal with it yourself without replacing hardware parts and without repair costs.

The sash may touch the edge of the frame in cases where the fittings become loose or deformed. This can happen if the window is constantly open. In this case, the fittings are damaged under the weight of the sash.

The second reason for the malfunction is opening or closing the window too sharply and quickly, which leads to deformation of the parts, as well as to loosening of their fastening.

To carry out the setup without problems, it is advisable to seek help from the hardware manufacturer, whose logo is visible on the parts. By visiting the manufacturer's website and reading the adjustment instructions, you can quickly and accurately make the adjustment.

Exist general tips to change the position of the sash if closing is disrupted:

  • The sash touches the frame with its upper end: the sash must be turned towards the lower canopy or the entire structure must be lowered down.
  • The sash touches the frame with its lower end closer to the handle: the sash is lifted and turned towards the top hinge.
  • The sash touches the frame in the middle of the end part (where the handle is): the structure is shifted towards the hinges. Sometimes it is necessary to slightly rotate the sash towards the lower or upper canopy.

To make the adjustment, you will need to use a hexagon to turn the bolts located on the scissor system on top of the window, as well as on the lower canopy.

Let's look at how to adjust the sash for the most common violations of its position.

  • If the sash has dropped, or you need to slightly turn it from below, you need to adjust the bolt located on the lower canopy. Once you remove the trim, you will see a hole at the top of the canopy. By inserting a hexagon into it and turning it, you will adjust the height of the sash. Turning clockwise raises the sash, counterclockwise lowers it.
  • If you need to move the sash to the left or right, you need a bolt located in the lower part of the hinged mechanism parallel to the plane of the window. There are two accesses to the bolt: from the window and from the slope; adjustment can be made from either side. By turning the bolt clockwise, you will move the sash to the right, counterclockwise - to the left. It is imperative to check how the window closes after each turn of the bolt. Manipulations are carried out until the desired result is achieved.
  • To adjust the sash at the top, it is necessary to adjust the scissor mechanism. To move the sash in the upper part, you need to find the hexagon head, which is located on the side of the mechanism. It will be accessible if the window is fully opened.

If you need to adjust a heavy metal-plastic sash or door, then you need to configure special closers, whose task is to lift the sash when opening and closing.

One of the advantages of modern plastic window systems is that their fittings are subject to comprehensive self-adjustment. In key places there are adjustment bolts, the adjustment of which is carried out using hex keys with a diameter of 4 mm. With a minimum of effort, you can independently adjust the window to suit you, adjust the heat exchange in the room, protect the window from cold air in winter time, as well as correct minor shortcomings that arose during operation.
