How to make a hanging chair with your own hands. How to make a hanging chair with your own hands and attach it to the ceiling. Materials and tools are presented

The hanging chair has always been in demand among wealthy families.

Today it is not necessary to be a rich owner of a cottage in order to have a comfortable hanging chair or sofa on your site that will suit landscape design, and most importantly, bring a lot of pleasure to the owner.

You can make your own hanging chair. There is nothing particularly difficult in this, of course you will need male help, but I hope you will not have problems with this.

What can you make a hanging chair with your own hands

You can make your own hanging chair:

  • from a wicker structure;
  • from the vine;
  • rattan hanging chair.

These natural materials are not only beautiful and environmentally friendly, but also very reliable.

It is also important that rattan furniture

and the vines weigh very little, which contributes to a simpler installation of the chair to the suspended structure, simplifies your rolling in the chair, and gives confidence in reliability.

If you plan to make your own hanging chair from a vine or buy it from a store, you should pay special attention to the shape, which should preferably be semi-circular, so that you can keep the chair in balance.

Balance can be achieved in other ways, but you need to have a certain experience, otherwise, in the absence of balance, you will not be able to relax while sitting in a chair.

Also, a do-it-yourself hanging chair can be made from an old office chair, if you have the opportunity to create a rounded metal frame for it, which will be suspended at its highest point. The chair is attached to this frame.

A hanging hammock chair is a very original and easy-to-make option. We will talk about it below in more detail.

How to make a hanging hammock chair with your own hands

All you need for a DIY hanging chair is imagination, a little patience, mastery of the macrame technique and a few simple supplies:

  • metal hoops in the amount of 2 pcs. They should have a different diameter, the size of which is not important (a larger hoop is taken for the back);
  • very strong cord (polyamide, for example) for weaving. It doesn’t matter what color, the main thing is that you have enough of it, so we recommend buying about 900 meters at once;
  • slings (about 12 meters);
  • two wooden bars;
  • two cords that will be needed to connect the metal rings of the hanging chair;
  • scissors;
  • roulette.

You can also stock up on gloves. How to make a hanging chair if you don't have rings? Contact a workshop where there is equipment for creating such metal structures.

The problem is that with your own hands you are unlikely to be able to bend the pipe evenly, and you will have to connect the two ends.

The good thing about polyamide cord is that the knots created will not come undone, as happens with many other materials for weaving baskets, vases, and more.

First you need to wrap the hoop with a cord, and then proceed to create the inner mesh.

This is a typical checkerboard, which is fixed with flat knots at each point of "contact". Thus, the seat for the future hanging chair is almost ready.

The places where the knots are created, or rather their appearance, will depend on whether the chair has upholstery.

If the rocking chair is being restored, and the color of the base materials varies, then, of course, the upholstery is needed for aesthetic purposes.

If the appearance of the wicker structure of the hanging chair is quite satisfactory, for decoration, at each extreme point at the point where the metal hoop is reached, we create a beautiful knot, from which we leave a certain length of the rope.

After the bottom of the chair is ready, you need to weave the back, but before that, attach a second metal circle of a larger diameter to the prepared support rods.

You can weave using any patterns, starting from any macrame technique, but in any case, it is important to wrap all the metal parts of the frame with a cord.

It is necessary to fix the support bars using screws - this will ensure maximum reliability of your do-it-yourself hanging chair.

If this option does not suit you, it presses somewhere, and you would like something softer, you can equip the chair with pillows.

In this case, if the upholstered part of the chair starts to deteriorate, you will not need to reupholster the furniture - it will be enough just to sew new pillows.

By the way, the option with pillows is very interesting. They can have different decorations, bows, bead patches, have different colors. You can also make real upholstery for a hanging chair, but in this case you will have to purchase a special fabric, preferably high-quality leatherette, if the chair will be hung in the open. Yes, and cleaning furniture will not be a difficult process.

An easier option for creating a wicker chair with your own hands is to buy a raincoat fabric, according to which a pattern will be made.

The inner part can be glued with foam rubber, and the raincoat fabric can be attached to the top of the finished chair.

Cheap, simple and cheerful - even if it gets wet, the fabric will not deteriorate, and it will not be difficult to choose a shape for a chair, which cannot be said about a full-fledged upholstery, which will require certain professional skills.

In addition, a hanging chair “packed” in raincoat fabric will be easy to disassemble if furniture repair is required, because it is not necessary to sew the fabric, you can simply pull it off on one side with a rope, which, if necessary, will be easily untied.

A hanging chair will add comfort and coziness to a modern home. This piece of furniture has been known since the middle of the last century, and today it has migrated from colorful magazines and stories about unusual interiors to the living rooms and summer cottages of many people.

Modern hanging chairs look original, as if floating in the air, and allow you to relax after a hard day's work. But such designs are not cheap, and choosing a “dream chair” is not always easy, although the range offered to consumers is quite wide. Most models are quite realistic to make yourself - it's not so difficult. How to make a hanging chair? This is the subject of this master class.

Suspended structures are a variety of options, among which stand out:

  • "rocking chairs" with a rigid frame made of plastic, metal, rattan or even wicker. For ease of use, such a base is in most cases covered with a soft cloth;

Armchair with a solid frame

  • with soft frame. These chairs are more like a traditional hammock. They are compact and take up little space, taking the shape of the human body;

In the form of a hammock

  • chair, called "cocoon". Wicker "walls" of this design, as it were, hide from prying eyes those who like to retire;

Cocoon chair

  • a “drop” chair that looks like a small house. A number of such structures (for example, those installed in a nursery) have small doors, which contributes to creating a feeling of a “nest” (sometimes they are called that).

Armchair "Drop"

Materials for manufacturing

Having decided on the design of the chair that you are going to make at home, you need to understand what materials you will use:

  1. For a chair resembling a swing, dense fabric and thick synthetic ropes, as well as small blocks of wood, are quite suitable.
  2. The cocoon chair can be made from rattan, wicker, or any other branch with sufficient flexibility.
  3. Some models require the use of plastic or steel hoops. Also, to make a chair, you will need textiles of increased wear resistance, synthetic filler in order to make your rest more comfortable, as well as any decorative elements that seem necessary to you.

Seat Techniques

To create a seat, you need to show imagination and use various techniques, such as:

  • macrame. The airiness of the appearance of this design is provided by bizarre combinations of rope weaves and knots. This method of creation is perhaps the most common;
  • patchwork. This is the name of the patchwork canvas. It is sewn over the durable material of the seat and is used for decoration - the "rocking chair" looks very stylish;
  • knitting. This technology allows you to combine cords of various colors in your work, which gives scope to the designer's imagination;
  • tatting. The seat of the hanging chair, made in this technique, looks weightless and very original.

What is necessary?

To make a frame hanging chair to the ceiling, you should purchase (or find at home) the following materials:

  • gloves;
  • scissors, tape measure;
  • hoops made of metal, wood or, for example, PVC;
  • braid, interlining;
  • ring, buckles;
  • polyamide threads and tapes;
  • foam rubber;
  • cords and slings of increased strength.

Manufacturing technology

And so you decided to take a chance and make a frame chair, with your own hands and hanging. Take everything you need and proceed as follows:

  1. Wrap the base of the frame with foam rubber, fixing it with glue.
  2. Wrap polyamide ribbons or threads used for macrame on top of the foam rubber.
  3. Connect ready-made bases with tape or ropes for fastening.
  4. Please note that the main elements of the frame are not chosen in the same size - they should be arranged from larger to smaller, forming the shape of a chair.
  5. The resulting base must be suspended from the ceiling of the room using slings and an iron ring.

Basic installation rules

It should be noted that it is possible to install chair mounts on a shelf only if it is strong enough. In a situation where there is a ceiling made of slabs with voids, it should be strengthened by filling the "holes" with anchor mortars based on high strength polymers.

Securing the chair with an anchor

Holes are drilled in wooden ceilings and fastening bolts are placed in them. A worthy option for mounting a chair is a special ceiling mount made of alloys that can withstand heavy loads.

Chains or durable textiles are used as a connecting material - the choice of how to fasten depends on the interior design and features of the chair.

Special fixing for suspended ceilings

Why do you need a stand?

Armchair suspended from a stand

The ceiling mounting of chairs has a number of disadvantages, the main of which is that the hanging piece of furniture can no longer be moved from the place where the hook is mounted. To avoid this situation, a special stand is often used for the chair, which can be purchased separately. This technology allows you to install a suspended structure wherever you like - this is especially true in children's rooms, where the interior often changes, and the load on the chair is not so great. In addition, the presence of a stand relieves the owner of the chair from the need to mount the mount directly on the ceiling, which is associated with a number of problems and is quite troublesome. In any case, the hanging chair in the interior looks extremely advantageous - you decide to supplement it with a stand or not.

A cover will help

Hanging hammock chair

How can you make a hanging chair with your own hands, without having skills, for example, knitting and macrame? It is best to choose the option of a hanging chair with a cover. To make this we need:

  • hoop;
  • a piece of matter;
  • interlining or braid;
  • slings;
  • buckles and a metal ring (for fixing).

The hoop can be created from pipes using metal-plastic, or from wood. When using the latter, one should be prepared for the fact that the natural material may dry out over time.

First of all, we make a cover. After cutting it out and marking the places for the slings, sew both circles together, leaving a hole in order to insert the hoop. Fill the cover with padding polyester, fixing it with an inconspicuous seam. Fasten the structure to the hoop. Secure the straps by putting buckles on them in order to be able to adjust the chair.

We spread the fabric, lay the hoop in the center. Mark with a marker a circle with a radius of 25 cm greater than the radius of the hoop. Cut out 2 such circles.
We fold one of the circles in half and cut it. Along the line of the central cut of this circle, a zipper is sewn in, equal in length to the diameter of the hoop. We sew two round halves of the cover and turn it inside out.
We make markings according to the drawing We make veils for fastenings We wrap the hoop with padding polyester
We sew it with a cloth We sew the edges of the cutouts with braid We insert the hoop into the case
We thread the cords We hang the chair

Today on the Internet you can find detailed schemes for the manufacture of suspended structures, videos explaining them, as well as numerous drawings.

The nest chair is easy to make yourself using a hoop and thick threads.

A very bright prospect, if you do not take into account the amount that you have to spend on the purchase. Just in order not to waste money on what you can do yourself, you will need this article. From our material you will learn how to design a hanging chair with your own hands, what options for these furniture designs are and how to properly attach it.

Types of hanging seats

There are many types of hanging seats. Some of them are quite elementary to make and, given that for work you need to have at least some knowledge in the field of sewing, weaving and knitting, then this is more women's work than men's. Work for the whole family: she prepares materials, fabrics, weaves, and he connects and fixes everything. Some materials don't even have to be specially bought, because they are already in your house, hidden in the pantry, since they are not needed. For those materials and tools that are not found in the home arsenal, of course, you have to go to the store. However, it will in any case be cheaper than buying a ready-made hanging garden or home chair.

So, what are the types of hanging chairs?

Chair type

Peculiarities

Hammock chair

The hammock chair has a soft frame. And if the hammock bed is mounted on two racks, then only one mount is enough for a hammock chair, that is, there is no significant difference between them, it is only in size and hanging method.

Nest chair

The nest chair (ball), for the frame of which an ordinary metal hoop is used, is one of the most popular models of hanging seats. Having a pleasant and interesting shape, this chair will fit perfectly into any interior. Choose the technique of weaving, colors, add decorative elements depending on personal preferences and where you are going to place the hanging seat. To make a nest chair, you will need the following materials: metal hoops (you can also use plastic ones), durable and dense textiles, wooden bars of various sizes, synthetic fillers, and decorative cords are useful for weaving.

Drop chair

In a drop chair it will be convenient for both an adult and a child, however, this view is still more considered childish, since the external conical shape resembles a house where you can take toys and not get out of there for hours or even fall asleep.

Swing chair

Many different materials can be used to make a swing chair. The frame in this case can be both rigid and soft. The design of such a suspension seat is quite simple, but at the same time sophisticated. The swing chair will be a wonderful decor for a garden plot or a yard in a country house, a terrace of a country house, it will complement the interior of any room, both a nursery and a bedroom, a guest room. To make such a chair, you will need dense textiles, wooden blocks and various synthetic ropes.

Cocoon chair

A cocoon chair, or as it can also be called an egg chair, is ideal for those who want to “hide” from the world, be alone, be alone with themselves, with their thoughts and in silence, for example, read. The walls of this type of seat are woven, and the frame is quite rigid. Half of the interior space in such a chair is hidden, so, as we said, it is ideal for privacy. The rods of willow, bast, bird cherry, rakita have sufficient flexibility to make a cocoon chair.

Wicker chair with hard frame

A wicker chair on a rigid frame, which can be made of acrylic, wicker, metal, plastic or rattan. This type of chair looks like a rocking chair, only instead of legs it is fixed from above, to the ceiling or to the branches of a tree. The base of the furniture must be covered with a fabric with high strength or leather strips, wicker, rattan.

Choose the technique for any hanging chair yourself, depending on your skills and abilities. Giving a master class, professionals use the following techniques:

  • knitting, with the help of which, by connecting cords of various colors, however, necessarily having high strength, it will allow you to make an unusual designer chair;
  • macrame, where knots of ropes and ropes are intertwined, giving the hanging chair an airy lightness and aesthetic appearance;
  • patchwork, when an additional patchwork fabric is sewn onto the inner material in order to give strength to the seat;
  • tatting, the openwork of which looks incredibly gentle and attractive, and most importantly - the chair seems to be floating in the air.

As you can see, the options for both the chairs themselves and the technician for their manufacture are enough to choose from.

Making a hanging chair nest with your own hands

Making a hanging nest chair with your own hands cannot be called a very complicated process, however, you still need to try a little, and in the end you will be satisfied with the result. At the same time, this type of design is considered the easiest to manufacture on your own. You can personally verify this. We know two options for structures of this design, where you need one hoop and two. To make a nest chair according to the first option, you will need the following materials:

  • a metal hoop made of a pipe with a section of 20/30 mm, the diameter varies (700-1100 mm) depending on what size you want to make yourself a hanging chair;
  • two pieces of fabric, for example, padding lining material, the size of which will be 1200 by 1200 mm or 1600 by 1600 mm;
  • another flap of this fabric, the width of which will be 200 mm, and the length 3500/4000 mm;
  • synthetic winterizer of the same length and width as the previous cut;
  • fabric for sewing pillowcases on pillows, as well as a synthetic winterizer for stuffing them;
  • border (800/1000 mm) to process cutouts in the case;
  • lightning, the length of which is 700/1100 mm;
  • a strong cord, whose thickness will be 6/8 mm, or, alternatively, a linen rope with a diameter of 10/12 mm, and a length of 10.5 m;
  • two rings and a carabiner for attaching the chair.

During work, you will have to use a sewing machine, scissors, thread and needles, a centimeter and a marker.

Now we will give step-by-step instructions on how to design a nest chair from a hoop with your own hands.

  1. Lay the fabric out on a table or other flat surface, and place the hoop on top in the center.
  2. Using a tape measure or a tape measure and a marker, measure the area around the hoop with a radius 250mm larger than the hoop itself.
  3. Using scissors, cut out the circle marked with a marker. As a result, there should be two of them.
  4. Next, take one of the two prepared circles and cut it into two equal parts.
  5. Along the center line of the cut of the circle, it is necessary to pin a zipper with stealth or pins, and then sew it on a sewing machine. You need to retreat from the edge of the cut by 250 mm and fix the lock specifically from this point. The zipper will be stitched along the entire diameter of the circle.
  6. The next step is to sew the two parts of the cover, and then turn it out and lay it out on a flat surface again.
  7. For convenience in marking, we recommend putting a ready-made cover on the hoop. Next, the markup itself is made in accordance with the drawing you have chosen. Most often, the upper corners are marked at 45 degrees, and the lower ones at 30 degrees. Where places for cords will be cut, it is worth marking with a 15 cm marker.
  8. According to your marks, you need to make four cutouts for cords, ropes or ropes, which, in fact, will keep the chair in limbo.
  9. For the accuracy of the appearance of the cover, the holes that you cut out need to be sheathed with braid. The cover is ready, now you need to start processing the hoop itself.
  10. It is necessary to start with the fact that polymer glue should be applied to the hoop, and then wrapped with synthetic winterizer. The glue mixture will not allow the fabric to slide on the metal, which will give you the opportunity to calmly manually sheathe the hoop with stitches along the edge.
  11. Next, you need to wrap the synthetic winterizer with an outer fabric. Wrap the edges of the material inward, secure with pins and start trimming along the edges. After handwork, remove all pins or invisibles.
  12. Now you can insert the processed hoop into the case. It remains to deal with the cords and ropes.
  13. Four parts must be cut from the cord, two of which will be 2200 mm long, and the other two - 2800 mm.
  14. Fold the cords in half and tie the ends into knots. Now you can thread them into the cut holes.
  15. To secure the cords under the hoop, you need to pass the ends tied into a knot through the loop that formed on the opposite side of them.
  16. For complete comfort, you can sew pillow cases, fill them with padding polyester.
  17. And in the end, all you have to do is hang the finished do-it-yourself hoop nest chair in the place you have chosen.

It is interesting! Instead of a hoop, you can use PVC pipes. Their advantage is light weight, high strength, warmth and softness of the plastic material. You can buy a pipe in a finished round shape in a specialized store. You will only need to choose the desired diameter for the size of the chair and connect the ends of the pipe correctly. You can fasten the ends using an insert, which is made of dense plastic or wood. Its diameter should be slightly smaller than the diameter of the pipe so that the insert fits snugly without leaving an empty space in the pipe. Place the insert at the ends, then slide them and fix them with self-tapping screws, the length of which will be 15/20 mm. It is important not to make a mistake with the size of the screws, so that they do not go through the pipe.

Now we will tell you how to make a nest chair with your own hands according to the second method, for which you need two hoops. This type of hanging furniture is made using the macrame technique. You will need to use the following materials

  • metal hoops (2 ready-made hula hoops or self-made from PVC pipes), the cross section of which is 30/35 mm, and the diameter is 700 mm (for the seat frame), 1100 mm (for the back);
  • nylon cord to weave a chair, the thickness of which will be 4 mm, and the length will be 900 mm, or linen rope of the same length, but whose diameter will be 5/6 mm;
  • a nylon cord to hang a chair, the section of which is 6/7 mm, and the length is 12 m;
  • two bars of wood, the cross section of which is 20/35 mm. You can replace wooden bars with metal pipes, whose diameter will be 20/25 mm.

As in the previous version, we will give step-by-step instructions for completing the task.

  1. You need to start by wrapping two hoops with a cord. So that the cord does not slip on the metal, as in the previous version of the chair, the hoops must be lubricated with polymer glue, but so that the liquid does not come out over the cord. They wrapped 20 turns - they made a tightening, so the loops will not slip.
  2. At the next stage, it is necessary to braid one of the hoops, which is used as a seat. You choose the weaving technique yourself - macrame, patchwork and other options according to your skills and preferences.
  3. Now you need to do the connection of the two hoops: wrap the cord around the front of the potential chair.
  4. In order for the back to be rigid enough, two supports should be made, the material for which can be wood, metal or PVC pipe, strong cords. Fasten the backrest supports to the seat with weaving. You can install supports in the chair before the back is braided or after that.
  5. Next, you need to braid the back of the chair in those gaps where it remains between the hoops. The technique remains the same.
  6. You braided both hoops, connected them together, now you need to braid the strings for hanging with a cord. This will add to their reliability and strength. You need to fix them in four measured places along the upper hoop, which is the back. You can adjust the length of the straps depending on the hanging height of the chair.

Ready! Now you can make a nest chair with one or two hoops with your own hands.

Suspended wicker cocoon seat

Suspended wicker cocoon seat is a classic version of this type of furniture. It is made from pre-harvested and processed branches of bird cherry, willow, bast, rakita or rattan.

In order to make such a wicker cocoon chair, you will need to use the following materials:

  • long rods of rattan or willow, which will be 10/15 mm in diameter (400/450 pieces);
  • in order to create a frame, you may need metal pipes or a hoop; the base can be simply woven from the same rattan, willow or bird cherry;
  • glue and twine to tie the frame;
  • a knife, pruner, ruler, awl, which are useful for calculations, measurements and cuts;
  • kapron cord, the section of which is 4 mm, to weave the back of the chair;
  • ropes and cords in order to secure a wicker garden chair in the country house or in the courtyard of your private house.

The manufacture of a hanging cocoon chair proceeds in the following sequence of actions.

  1. It is necessary to cut the rods of rattan, willow, bird cherry, bast, peel them from the bark and set off, and then beat them off so that the vine is more flexible during weaving and amenable to the procedure.
  2. The next step is to create a frame. If you are going to use a hoop for this purpose, then it needs to be made flatter. But it is better, of course, to use a metal pipe, the shape of which is given quite simply, and the ends are connected by a special insert.
  3. Fasten the remaining frame parts to the pipe or hoop. The thickness of the rods in the section must be at least 6/8 mm, and the length must necessarily exceed the height of the chair by 2.5-4 cm when vertically fixed.
  4. Fix the rods vertically on the upper and middle parts of the frame so that after moving apart in the middle there is a gap of 2-2.5 cm between them in the middle of the back of the chair.
  5. The rods need to be bent in the shape and depth that you want to create for your chair, and then at the bottom again connect them to the middle. It will look like a basket.
  6. Bend the frame vine through the tube from the inside of the chair outwards to secure the vine to the base. The end that is bent, intercept with a twine with a vine.
  7. The rods, which are the frame, weave crosswise with another vine, thinner. Start at the bottom and gradually work your way up. Bend the edge of the rods and twist around the base vine on the pipe. All rods should fit snugly against each other.
  8. According to this principle, the entire chair is woven, forming a kind of basket. The edge of the last twig must be bent and tucked inside the weave.

You have mastered the art of creating a hanging wicker cocoon chair.

Do-it-yourself swing chair from boards

Do-it-yourself swing chair made of boards is a pretty good and easy-to-make version of hanging furniture structures. You do not need to have specific carpentry skills. We will tell you how to process the boards and drill the holes necessary for the construction. There are several options for making a hanging chair from boards. We will share with you recommendations regarding two methods.

In order to build a chair according to the first method, you need to “arm yourself” with the following materials:

  • boards with these dimensions: their length should be 60-70 cm, width 12-15 cm, thickness 10-15 cm. You need 16 well-crafted boards;
  • nylon cord length 10 m;
  • water-based varnish in order to cover the chair with it.

Of the tools, you will need a hacksaw, or rather a jigsaw, sandpaper, a drill and wood drills with a diameter of 6, 8 and 10 mm.

Follow this step-by-step technology for making a hanging chair.

  1. First of all, you need to prepare the boards: pick them up to the same specified size, pull out the nails, if any, saw off the parts with holes from under the nails, make the surface perfectly smooth by sanding it or using sandpaper.
  2. On the processed boards, you need to drill through holes along the top and bottom lines along the entire length. The distance between the holes should be 5 cm.
  3. Next comes the laying of the boards, starting from the bottom and applying the next bar from above tightly to each other. The nylon cord must be threaded through the holes diagonally, thus fastening the boards together, that is, it is necessary to connect the side faces of the two boards with a cord.
  4. According to the previous principle, you need to pass the cord from the back as well, so that you end up with crosses that connect the boards through the holes. We do not recommend pulling the cord tightly, since for the formation of a chair it is necessary that the boards are located quite freely. After you pass the cord through all the holes, it must be secured with knots from the back of the chair.
  5. The next step is to drill holes for hanging the chair. They are made on the top board from below and on the second board from above, departing from the edge 3-4 cm equally on both sides relative to the center of the bar.
  6. Here is the finished chair. For complete comfort, you can throw a blanket over him, take out a couple of pillows. Alternatively, a wooden frame can be constructed so that the cords are stretched at the desired distance, rather than joining in a pyramid at the top. It is done a little below the suspension point.

The second option for making a swing chair is considered more childish, so making it is even easier than following the first method.

Prepare the following materials for the construction of the structure:

  • boards, the length of which will be 50-70 cm, width 5-6 cm, and thickness 1.5-2 cm (14 pieces);
  • a nylon cord 10 m long and 1 cm in diameter;
  • self-tapping screws, the length of which is 1 cm, and the caps are wide.

If you take already processed lumber, then for work you only need a screwdriver.

Follow the step by step instructions:

  1. First of all, you need to lay out the boards parallel to each other, laying them upside down, leaving a distance of 1 cm between the bars.
  2. As soon as the boards are laid, you can braid the bars with a cord in the form of a snake, stepping back from the edges 4-5 cm, first in one direction, and then in the next, until all the boards are pierced with a cord. Wrap tightly so that in which case the boards do not fall out.
  3. On the bottom board of the chair from its wrong side, it is necessary to combine both edges of the cord and press it with a self-tapping screw. An identical operation is done with the cords and from the wrong side on the top board.
  4. Now, with self-tapping screws, you need to fix the cords with which you wrapped each board from the wrong side on both sides of the bars.
  5. And finally, you need to attach the slings and hang the finished chair in the place that you have chosen.

We sorted out the hanging swing chair from the boards.

Mounting methods

There are several ways to attach hanging seats: they can be attached to the branches of a tree in a garden in a country house or to the ceiling in an apartment or house. And if there shouldn’t be any special problems with fastening on the street, then you need to talk more about fixing a hanging chair to the ceiling. It must be incredibly strong to support weights above 120 kg.

Chair suspension method

Concrete ceiling without voids

In the concrete ceiling, you need to drill a hole for the anchor with a hook and fix the hanger. This option is only suitable for a concrete ceiling without voids inside.

Concrete ceiling with voids

If there are still voids in the ceiling, then you need to make a hole and fill them with a special mixture (high strength chemical anchor). After filling the voids, it is now necessary to mount a metal anchor with a hook, leave it for at least two days so that the mixture completely hardens and hardens, and only after that hang the finished chair.

Suspended ceiling

If the ceiling is closed, it is tension or plastic, then you need a slightly different option for fastening, where there will be a section of the desired length, and at the end there is a threaded sleeve. The bracket must be attached to the concrete ceiling and led out through the hole in the false ceiling, and then a hook or ring should be built into it, on which the chair itself is suspended.

So, here you have learned how to make a hanging garden or indoor chair with your own hands, as well as how to attach it correctly. Choose any design option you like and equip yourself with a comfortable seat for relaxing.

A hanging chair has only recently appeared in the interiors of our apartments, although benches and rocking chairs for relaxing with a suspension have been known for a long time. Most often, hanging furniture items were made by hand and used mainly for recreation outside the city, in the country or garden house. Only with the advent of serious design solutions, armchairs with a suspension began to be actively built with their own hands and used in the home interior.

What is interesting chair with suspension

At first glance, it may seem that there are no special advantages or benefits from using a hanging chair. An armchair with a suspension is perceived as a fun attraction or an element of a summer cottage playground.

But it is worth at least a couple of days to use hanging furniture, as there is a desire to make something similar for yourself, even more interesting and convenient. But it's not even about convenience. Armchairs with a suspension system differ significantly from the classic schemes:

  • As a rule, the suspension provides a fairly large field of view, you can easily turn in any direction of interest, turn away from the sun's rays or an annoying draft;
  • The possibility of a slight wiggle has a positive effect on the muscles of the back, pelvis, legs, you can spend the whole day in a hanging chair without the risk of getting a stiff back, neck or lower back;
  • A well-chosen and self-assembled design of a hanging chair is able to save the muscles and joints of the legs from swelling, cramps and pain after a busy day at work.

Advice! To achieve a pronounced therapeutic effect, a careful selection of the design of the resting place will be required, since not all options for hanging benches, hammocks, and benches make it possible to effectively deal with fatigue.

Most apartment suspended structures are planned with a fixed stationary suspension. This allows for maximum reliability, but is not always convenient in everyday use. If you make a suspension chair with your own hands, then a scheme with a stand or a support tripod will be more preferable. Such furniture can be easily assembled with your own hands outside the apartment, if necessary, installed in the country house, balcony, terrace, anywhere to relax.

It should be borne in mind that, unlike ordinary upholstered furniture, a chair with a hanging mount will require additional free space, at least half a meter on each side, otherwise the main therapeutic effect of rocking will simply be impossible to achieve.

The most famous suspension chair designs

Currently, a fairly large number of armchairs with a suspended type of support, modern design and decoration are offered. Many of them are decorated and made in accordance with modern trends in home interior planning, new materials and methods of building a suspension system are used. But there are also relatively simple and affordable do-it-yourself schemes.

The most successful schemes of hanging chairs include the following models:

Separately, it should be noted the classic hanging chair poeng. The creators of the swinging system took a strong mesh body from a cocoon or egg and cut off the upper third of the form “on an oblique”. As a result, the new design retained the same strength and rigidity characteristic of a cocoon, and received the most open space, saturated with light and fresh air.

New trends in the forms of suspended structures

In addition to the classic weaving of rattan and wicker, plastic and fabric nets, when creating new models of suspension systems, designers are trying to build chairs on suspensions of unusual shapes and sizes. For example, a unique ball chair.

Such a design will ideally fit into the interior of any home or even an office space. You can make a do-it-yourself acrylic ball at home by casting good quality epoxy resin. To prevent the outer edge of the chair from deforming under load, the body is supplemented with a metal hoop.

No less interesting are the new models made of profiled wooden slats. It turns out that the ball chair can be made from several semicircles, cut out of thick plywood and supplemented with soft pillows.

From curvilinear slats, you can assemble hanging chairs of the most unusual shapes and sizes.

As a material for power parts, aluminum in the form of a profile or tubes is very popular. Any round chair, whether it be a “nest”, “drop” or a more complex version, is always equipped with a supporting frame made of an aluminum ring.

From aluminum gymnastic hoops, you can make a very unusual cocoon hanging chair with your own hands. The classic version of the drop-shaped or egg-shaped form is most often performed as a light and at the same time rigid hanging chair made of rattan, wicker or plastic.

In this case, due to the use of a dozen aluminum hoops, it was possible to assemble a very flexible, soft and at the same time quite strong structure. The seat of the chair is able to adapt to the anatomical features of a person, so sitting in it is much more comfortable, even than in a cocoon or a "crow's nest".

DIY hanging chair

If desired, you can purchase a ready-made hanging chair of your favorite shape and size. Such designs are massively sold in the summer season by building and furniture supermarkets. But there is one problem, the average cost of one hanging rocking chair can easily exceed 15 thousand rubles. with a very mediocre quality of material and work. It is easier and more reliable to try to make a hanging chair with your own hands, especially since there are plenty to choose from.

The most practical hanging chair option

When choosing a specific scheme for the future chair, experts recommend paying attention to two main features:

  • For the presence in the design of an elastic back and side supports;
  • The method of designing the seat in the chair and the height of the suspension.

The rigid and resilient back, which you can lean on, ensures a safe stay in the chair, regardless of the angle of the suspension system. At the same time, there should be free space left and right, otherwise it will be too hot, stuffy and uncomfortable to sit in the chair. In the manufacture of closed cocoons or poeng chairs, wicker rattan or wicker, which can pass a large amount of air, is mainly used as a material.

The second requirement relates to the position of the legs when sitting in a hanging chair. If the height of the suspension provides a normal touch of the ground or floor, then the shape of the seat can be any. If the legs remain suspended, in this case the seat must be made flat or with a slight slope so that the front edge of the chair does not squeeze the calves of the legs.

An example of a safety chair is the model shown in the diagram below. To build a chair, you will need two hoops, with a section of 35 mm and a diameter of 110 and 75 mm. The main work is carried out with a polyamide cord and threads. For the manufacture of the suspension system, a polyamide towing cable with locking hooks is used.

Hanging furniture is made in three stages:

  • Initially, the seat is braided with a cord with a checkerboard mesh. The edges of the mesh are braided onto a hoop and covered with adhesive impregnated tape;
  • In the second stage, a hoop is laid on the seat, from which the back and side supports will be obtained. The hoops are tied with two layers of polyamide cord winding. The back of a hanging chair can also be braided with a checkerboard or any other bandage;
  • The suspension system is attached to the chair with rope knots or loops. The end of the cord can be tied with a "nautical" or "cat" knot, and the upper parts are braided into one pigtail and hung on a hook.

Hanging furniture can be hung on a crossbeam or made into an individual rack from four pieces of reinforcement.

How to make a suspension in a couple of hours of work

A very simple and at the same time unusual suspension chair can be made from standard steel hoops used in gymnastics and medical practice.

To make a hanging type chair, you will need 5-6 hoops, 1.5-1.6 m 2 of plastic or sheet aluminum, a wooden rail 20x40x600 mm in the amount of 4-5 pieces, a jute rope and a set of soft seat cushions.

Hoops are collected in a package. In the upper part of the suspension, the hoops must be welded into a bundle with your own hands or in a workshop and retrofitted with a bracket. The lower part of the package is fixed with straps and a nylon cord. On top of the wooden spacers, a plastic or sheet of metal is laid and tied to be used as a seat. The result is a suspension structure in the form of an asymmetrical ring.

DIY bag chair

The simplest and most affordable furniture scheme for manufacturing with a suspension is considered to be a bean bag chair. It can be done with your own hands without much effort in one and a half to two hours of work.

To make a bean bag chair, you will need a thick cotton fabric measuring 170x80 cm, six meters of a thin climbing turnip, a wooden spacer bar and a thread with a needle.

The process of manufacturing a hanging chair begins with flashing two edges on a piece of fabric for tightening the rep. When tied with a cord, the fabric takes the form of a shoulder bag, which is why the suspension system got its name. The ends of the rep are threaded through the holes in the spacer wooden plank on the ceiling hook.

The presence of a bar for this suspension scheme is considered mandatory, thanks to it the seat does not fold and does not create discomfort, although you cannot call it particularly convenient.

The second most popular version of the bean bag chair is made from a do-it-yourself crocheted fabric from a durable polyester thread or a slide-shaped cord. In addition to the canvas of the hanging chair, at the same time it is necessary to tie the fastening loops through which the frame ring will be threaded. As the latter, you can use a steel hoop reinforced with a decorative overlay.

DIY hammock

The idea to make a suspended structure in the form of a hammock appeared simultaneously with the first models of suspensions. A hanging hammock chair differs from the routine designs of a cocoon or a bag, first of all, by the size of the “seat” and the ability to raise and lay the legs on a specially made stand.

This position greatly simplifies resting in a hammock chair, making it more comfortable and safer. If desired, a hammock can even be used for sleeping.

A simple model of a hammock

The fastest and simplest version of a hanging chair can be made from two round oak slats 90-120 cm long, one transverse slat 540x40x500 mm, a nylon cord and a canvas made of denim, polyester or canvas fabric 140x80 cm.

The fabric is hung through the loops on the longitudinal slats, as in a real marine hammock, holes are drilled at the ends of the slatted frame and two loops of cord are threaded. The tops are wound onto a transverse bar, tied up and after one and a half meters they are tied on a ceiling hook or eyebolt.

Country version of a hammock

A more convenient and comfortable version of a hammock-style hanging chair can be made from lumber on hand. In this case, we will make a hammock from plywood.

Pre-cut 16-20 boards, 60 cm long and 10 cm wide, the material thickness is at least 15 mm. We remove burrs on all blanks with emery, clean them and treat them with varnish for outdoor work with an antiseptic. The next step is to drill eight-millimeter holes along each long edge of the board with an indent from the edge of 20 mm and a step of 50 mm. You need to drill all the blanks.

The hanging chair is assembled by tying individual blanks with a braided silk cord in the following order:

  • Each board has two rows of 10 holes. Initially, it is necessary to chamfer sharp edges and wipe with fine-grained sandpaper or sand so that in the process of using a hanging chair - a hammock, the wood does not cut the cord;
  • Each pair of boards is connected with a braided cord in a cross, just like shoes are laced, the stretch should be minimal, so that there is a gap of 0.5-0.7 mm between the ends;
  • From the tied pairs of viscous, one common canvas of the structure is assembled. If the hammock is connected correctly, then at maximum load, the increase in the gap will not exceed 1 mm. This is enough to ensure that the fabric remains flexible in the longitudinal direction and does not propeller-roll like fabric or mesh schemes.

It remains to fix the stretch marks, from the side of the back the canvas is attached with slings to the extreme planks, the opposite part can be hung from the third or second row. The result is an impromptu flexible base with a back and footrest.

Conclusion

A hanging chair takes up a little more space in the apartment than ordinary upholstered furniture. To avoid confusion with rearrangement, for home hanging options, several hanging hooks are usually used embedded in the ceiling. This allows furniture to be re-hung without significant damage to the interior and does not affect the usability of the suspension system. If there is plenty of space in the apartment, then it will be more successful to make a portable rack.

Summer residents mainly think about how to make a hanging chair with their own hands during the holidays. After all, it is not only convenient to use, but also decorates the entire summer cottage. When summer comes, all the inhabitants of megacities try to escape into nature. Someone can afford to go to the country for the whole season, while someone comes only for the weekend. Surely there is no person who would not want to sway in a hammock, listen to birdsong and doze off. A hanging chair is easier to buy, besides there are enough models, and everyone will find the best one for themselves. Someone will like a cocoon chair, while others will like a swing more. But the cost of such furniture is quite high, so many people are thinking about whether to make a hammock chair with their own hands.

Why not? Indeed, for the manufacture of some models, you can use materials (chairs, hoops, ropes, wood bars, etc.) that lie in the shed and take up space. A more complex hanging chair may require materials that can be collected from nature or purchased. Some models will require you to be able to knit and weave, so the whole family will be involved in the manufacture of the suspended structure. But first you need to figure out what chairs are.

Varieties of swing chairs

For the first time, the mass distribution and great popularity of the hanging chair began in the middle of the last century - it was the peak of fashion. At this time, the craftsmen invented and brought to life a variety of designs and various elements that made hanging chairs individual and different from each other. Here are some types:

  1. An armchair with a rigid frame made of wicker, plastic, metal or other material. The base is covered with fabric or braided with rods. The principle of construction is the same as that of a hammock.
  2. The swing chair is made in the same way, only with a soft frame. The seat can be of different sizes, and the mount can be single.
  3. Chair-cocoon, which has a rigid frame and wicker walls. A distinctive feature of this chair is that the interior space is half closed from the outside world.
  4. A drop chair is a model that is mainly used in a nursery. Represents a small house in which you can play or sleep. There is enough space in it to lay out the toys.

Making a hanging hammock or swing with your own hands is not very difficult, this business will require creativity and durable materials that will make using the chair safe.

What swing chairs can you make yourself

Swing chairs, which will be described below, can be made by yourself. The proposed options will not only be your favorite vacation spot, but also a unique highlight of the interior of your summer cottage. Self-manufacturing will make it possible to translate your imagination into reality.

Hanging swing

This chair can be made from a variety of materials. You will need:

  1. The fabric is 2 m long and 1-1.2 m wide. Choose a dense material, firstly, the denser it is, the more load it can withstand, and secondly, a dense fabric will wear out less.
  2. Centimeter, scissors, iron, sewing machine.
  3. Wooden block or plank.
  4. Steel carabiner, nylon thread rope.

The fabric must be folded in half in length and draw a line not along the fold line so that a trapezoid is obtained when turning. It turns out not a hammock, but a hammock chair.

The upper and lower edges of the trapezoid must be hemmed and ironed, the sides folded twice at an angle of 90º, this will be a tunnel for the rope. The seam needs to be stitched.

In a wooden plank, 2 holes must be drilled on each side at a distance of 2 cm from each other. If you want, the bar itself can be varnished or painted with paint.

The ends of the rope must be burned so as not to unravel, tie a knot on one side and pass through the holes, and then through one of the tunnels in the fabric. At the same time, it should be borne in mind that the loop that you get is both the size of the chair and the height at which you will hang the swing. Therefore, before cutting the rope and tying the second knot, you need to make sure that everything suits you. After you pass the rope on the other side of the bar, the loop for the carabiner can be attached to the holder. Next, the rope must be passed through the second tunnel in the fabric and a second knot must be tied.

braided variant

To do this, you need any material that has strength and flexibility, it can be willow, bird cherry, rattan rods, bast or grapevine. You will need about 400 rods with a diameter of 1-2 cm. The frame for the chair can be made of plastic or metal hoop. Weaving can be as follows:

  1. First, a cross is made of 3-4 of the thickest rods, they must be tied with a rope soaked in glue. From how long the rods you take, it will hang the seat of the future chair.
  2. The cross is wrapped around with a rod in such a way that the rod turns out to be from below, then from above, when the rod ends, take another one and continue like this until the necessary seat is obtained. As a rule, the size of the seat is about 80 cm. The last circle must be tied with a rope dipped in glue.
  3. To make the back, you need a hoop. It is necessary to tie 5 cords to it, and attach the second ends of the cords to the seat and coat with glue. Moreover, the front 2 cords should be shorter than the 3 back ones, since the back ones are the back. Next, 5 cords must be braided with any weaving of macrame. In order for the back to be more durable, it can be strengthened with a pair of thicker rods. Then, slings must be attached to the hoop in 4 places, connected with a carabiner and hung on a hook.

It is more difficult to make a cocoon chair, for this you need to be proficient in the technique of weaving macrame. You will need two hoops: one - with a diameter of 70 cm for the seat, the second - 110 cm for the back. You can use metal-plastic pipes with a cross section of 3.5 cm. First you need to determine which frame you want. The entire central part of the hoop, which is intended for sitting, must be braided with a dense and durable weave. Next, attach the second hoop to the seat and tie cords around its entire circumference, which are attached to the second end of the seat with the second end. In order for the chair to keep its shape, the backrest can be reinforced with several willow rods. Then, according to the resulting frame, you can weave any macrame patterns. Attach a carabiner to the top of the hoop, which will be fixed to the hook.

When self-manufacturing hanging chairs, we must not forget that they will have to withstand heavy loads, so the choice of material must be approached very responsibly. Weaving ropes, rods, fabrics, fasteners - everything must be designed to support the weight of a person. If you are making a swing for a child, keep in mind that it is unlikely that he will sit quietly in them, most likely the child will jump, stand up on the seat, etc.

All knots must be made double and tightly tightened. The ends of the ropes must be burned so that they do not unravel. Carabiners, fasteners and the hook itself, on which the swing will hang, must be made of durable metal and withstand high loads. For chairs woven from wicker, you must definitely sew a couple of pillows, otherwise it will not be very comfortable to sit on them.

There are a lot of options for hanging chairs, and it is not at all necessary to use ready-made drawings and diagrams. You can let your imagination run wild and create a unique chair that no one else has. The main thing is to understand the principle of building a structure, and then you can fantasize as much as you like.

If the dacha is designed in a certain style, then in order for the hanging chair not to be dissonant, it is necessary to harmoniously fit it into the overall interior, or at least focus on the color scheme. You can hang the chair both on a strong tree branch and on a metal L-shaped structure, which must be concreted for safety reasons.
