How to make a homemade pipe cleaner. What type of chimney brush is used, and how to make one yourself? How to make a device for cleaning horizontal smoke ducts

Good day to you, readers and DIYers.
The author of the following homemade product very often clogs the chimney in his garage stove. That's why he decided to make a homemade brush for cleaning the chimney. Of course, such brushes can be purchased at a hardware store or bought online, but why buy something that you can relatively easily make with your own hands. And the price tag of such a homemade product will be tens of times less than a device purchased in a store.

After using his homemade product for some time, identifying all the pros and cons, he came up with a device for more convenient chimney cleaning.

I suggest you read about production in this article.

Necessary materials and tools.
-Dumbbell
-Cable - length 0.5-0.6 meters (diameter 5mm)
-Cable length depends on the height of the air duct (diameter 2mm)
-Nuts M10 2pcs
-Cable clamps 3 pcs.
-Profile pipe 20x20mm
-welding electrode 3mm
-Welding machine
-Bulgarian
-Hammer
-Vise

Manufacturing process part one.
The brush device itself will be based on an old rusty dumbbell, which was purchased at the nearest scrap metal collection point at a very reasonable price. The author uses a dumbbell with a total weight of 5 kg; the diameter of the dumbbell balls should be less than the diameter of the pipe being cleaned. For the device, you only need one half of a dumbbell, so you can make two brushes at once from one dumbbell.

First of all, clamp the dumbbell in a vice and cut off one ball of the dumbbell with a grinder.

An M10 nut is welded to the cut part of the dumbbell, and the brush load is ready, isn’t it easy?

Now you should start making the brush itself.
To do this, he will use a piece of cable with a diameter of 5mm. You can use a cable with a larger diameter, since the thicker the cable, the thicker and stronger the veins in it.

The author cuts the cable into 10cm pieces. The length of the sections must match the diameter of the chimney pipe.

Now the chopped pieces need to be dissolved into individual fibers. It is better to carry out this procedure with gloves, as the likelihood of injuring your hands is very high.

The cable is loose, now you need to make a frame for the brush.
A 3mm electrode will be used for the frame.
The coating from the electrode is beaten with a hammer.

Since the electrode core is made of fairly stiff wire, it bends and breaks poorly. To soften the wire, you need to heat it until red and let it cool, in other words, let it go. You can warm it in the coals, they sang, gas burner, but the author will warm with welding machine.

We clamp the electrode in a vice to which the mass of the welding machine is connected. We connect the clamp from the welding machine to the free end of the electrode and heat the wire until red. The heating procedure lasts about 15-20 seconds. Now you should let the wire cool on its own.

After cooling, the wire became soft, and now you can continue working with it. The author bends the wire in the center, at the point of bending there should be a small eyelet.

Now you need to place the previously prepared cable fibers into this bracket. You should get a similar structure, the edge of which must then be clamped in a vice, moving 2 cm away from the edge.

Then, inserting a large nail or screwdriver into the eyelet, you need to tighten this structure.

Then you need to make another eye, on the opposite side of the brush. To do this, clamp a nail between the two ends of the wire, clamp the ends in a vice and tighten the structure with the inserted nail.

The result was a pretty decent brush with a diameter of 100mm with two rings at the ends.

Now you need to connect the brush with the load. Connects them using a small piece of cable (diameter 2mm). The ends of the cable are clamped using a screw clamp.

You also need to attach a cable to the second eye of the brush. The length of the cable should be 2-2.5 times longer than the height of the chimney pipe.
This is the kind of brush the author came up with, and he ran off to test his product to celebrate.

And here is a deposit of soot in the chimney pipe.

Now you should install a ladder, climb along it to the top of the chimney and begin this labor-intensive, inconvenient and, one might say, dangerous cleaning process. Hard? Hard.

Realizing that this method of cleaning the chimney is, to put it mildly, inconvenient, I came up with another device. This is a device for immersing a brush into a chimney.

The manufacturing process part two.
It’s very difficult to call it a manufacturing process, but still. To make the device, the author bought profile pipe 20x20mm, 3.5 m long. Of course, the length of the pipe should depend on the height and location of your chimney.

A piece of pipe bent into a half ring was welded onto the edge of the pipe; the tube has a diameter of 10 mm. A cable with a brush connected was passed inside the pipe.

At first the author wanted to make a release mechanism using rollers, but he was unable to weld them. And the design itself would be too complex and unreliable.

Even lower, a kind of hook was welded onto the pipe. The hook should be welded lower than the bottom of the brush when raised.

We can say that a chimney brush is the main tool used for the hygiene of this structure. In some ways, the device is similar to a toothbrush for cleaning bottles, the principle and overall appearance are very similar, naturally only the dimensions are much larger. The ruff consists of a main spire (also known as the central perpendicular), on which several circles of large “bristles” are made. Often thin steel wire is used, in some cases it is permissible to use only soft types wire.

Despite a general understanding of the cleaning procedure and an understanding of the entire device, many are unaware of significant factors when purchasing finished products. It should be taken into account that the tool is not suitable for every type of channel. For example, for brick structures, a brush with hard “bristles” is suitable, where the “bitten” soot is “settled” quite tightly on the walls. If you are buying for steel pipe, purchase soft products, with soft wire or plastic, nylon. Otherwise, the rigid wire may damage the structure. As you can see, there are enough nuances in choosing ruffs and it is important to pay attention to them.

Cleaning brush brick chimney

Where is it sold and how much does it cost?

You can buy such a device at any hardware store. If you don't have it, you can purchase a brush for your chimney on the Internet; as a rule, the cost does not differ significantly. average price within 2,000 rubles.

How to make a homemade brush?

If the price seems too high for you, you can make such products yourself. The main thing is to determine exactly what shape you need and for which pipe. There are three main types of brushes:

  • The brush is a classic metal brush, shaped like a cylinder. Additional devices included in the kit can be either a simple long rope, usually 5 meters, or a weight weighing up to 2 kg. with extension cord.
  • A regular brush equipped with steel or nylon bristles. Has a special handle.
  • Scraper. It saves the day when there are soot build-ups on the channels that the two previous options cannot cope with. Can be of any suitable shape.

From a plastic bottle

A homemade brush can be made from an ordinary water bottle. Manufacturing stages:

  • In the center of the bottom, make a small hole.
  • A hole of the same diameter is made in the lid.
  • Next, cut the bottle into small strips and attach a pin with a hook to one side.
  • On the other side, a pin is also inserted, which are connected together.
  • Using nuts, compress the bottle and attach a weight to one side.

The process of making a plastic brush

This design is suitable for cleaning metal and ceramic channels.

From the broom

A chimney brush can be made from ordinary plastic broom, which are now a network in almost every household. Manufacturing stage:

  • Cut off the stalk.
  • Straighten the “stubble”, you can use a hair dryer. After straightening, we clamp it with a pin and washer.
  • From the side of the handle we wind a pin with a hook.
  • The structure is tightened on both sides, then a cable with a sinker is attached.

Excellent for cleaning wide channels.

From a metal brush for an angle grinder

A metal brush or brush can even be made from such a device. At the moment the price is not that high, so we recommend buying ready product. If you decide to make a chimney brush with your own hands, remember that you will need two sheets, a threaded rod and nuts. Also, do not forget to use stiff wire or, in some cases, nylon wire as “bristles.”

A complex version made of metal cable

A cable can also be used to clean chimneys. The manufacturing process is much more complex and requires certain efforts and skills. You will need a cable, preferably 1 cm in diameter. An edge of about 10 cm dissolves into individual fibers. They bend into different sides, and in order to hold the mold to clean the pipe, two plates are taken and compressed. A counterweight should be attached to the bottom edge to break up lumps and soot build-ups.

In order to clean the chimney, there is no need to buy the entire necessary tool in specialized stores. In this article, we will talk about how to make a brush for cleaning a chimney with your own hands.

Main materials of manufacture and characteristics

If you have a stove or fireplace in your home that operates through a chimney, then this unit certainly needs quality cleaning periodically. A do-it-yourself chimney brush will allow you to make this process simple, and the result is guaranteed to be positive.

The main design of this device is represented by a large flexible cable on one side of which there is a load, and on the other a special brush.

Important: cleaning can be done from any side. Depending on the shape, type and size of the pipe (from the roof, from the side of the house or through special holes).
For the manufacture of this design, the following materials are most often used:
  • The base is made of wire or metal cable. It is important that this part is as flexible, durable and not brittle as possible;
  • It is possible to use special plastic strands or fishing line with a large diameter;
  • For better grip, secure the frame with springs;
  • Can be used as a base plastic bottles;
  • One of the most durable and inexpensive materials, the price of which is affordable, is rubber.

A brush with a large diameter and medium-hard bristles

Choosing a tool depending on the type of chimney

  1. To clean brick chimneys, brushes are used that have a regular rectangular or square brush shape with the most hard and dense bristles;
  2. Pipes made of stone can be cleaned well and quickly with products that have a rectangular or round shape;
  3. Brushes of any size, shape and cross-section are suitable for metal pipes, since the surface of the product is as smooth as possible and is easy to clean, even if there are heavy pollution and a dense layer of soot.

Tip: if you want to find a product for removing soot that is ideal in its overall dimensions and shape, we recommend using a homemade chimney brush.

Manufacturing instructions

At the first stage of making a product with your own hands, you need to pay attention to the following points:

  • Determine the length of the chimney and, based on accurate calculations, make flexible base this size;
  • In order to determine the size of the tool, it is necessary to measure the diameter of the pipe. The product must move freely and enter the internal part without getting stuck;
  • Select a bristle with the optimal degree of bristles stiffness and thickness. If there is a lot of dirt and the layer is large enough, you need to choose the hardest and thickest pile; the same rule applies to stone and brick pipes.

Important: the total length of the cable base must be calculated according to the following scheme: total length of the chimney + 2 meters for reserve.

At the end of the base, it is necessary to tie a large and strong loop that can withstand the total weight of the entire device and cannot come undone under the influence of the load during the cleaning process.

Manufacturing of cargo

A metal brush for cleaning a chimney must have not only a base and bristles, but also a weight that allows you to correctly position the center of gravity and significantly facilitates the work, allowing you to effectively remove dirt, plaque and soot from the walls of the structure.

  1. The main material for making a plumb weight is any metal object rounded shape. You can also use weights;
  2. It is recommended that the plumb line be represented by one element. In the absence of a weight or a large bolt, special metal plates can be used. Such elements must have a thickness of at least 6-10 centimeters;
  3. Another way to make a load is a special pipe with a diameter of 50 to 60 millimeters. It is necessary to drill about 8 holes in such a pipe and secure the cable in this way.

Making a brush from bottles

Instructions for making a brush from plastic bottles:

  • You need to take 4-5 bottles and cut off the bottom of each of them;
  • Cut the sidewalls into small pieces - strips vertically;
  • The cut should end at the edge of the container bend;
  • The cuts should have different thicknesses;
  • The blanks must be connected in such a way that the largest strips are on the outside of the product;
  • Bottles with smaller stripes must be inserted inside and the neck cut off;
  • In order to secure the structure, you need to screw the base with a simple lid;
  • You need to make a small hole in the lid and insert a flexible cable into it;
  • The end of the cable must be finished with a loop for subsequent installation of the weight;
  • A flexible cable is inserted into the loop at the end and turned clockwise;
  • To make pile, you can use both sheet rubber and plastic;
  • The brush is mounted on a metal pin, the length of which is from 20 to 25 centimeters;
  • Fixation is done with a washer. The length of the teeth can vary. The space between them is filled with the same rubberized or plastic material, only shorter length;
  • The washer must be additionally secured with a nut.

Important: if you want to make products for cleaning a brick chimney, it is recommended to use large 4-liter bottles with a square bottom.

Tip: to make the plastic bristles much harder, pre-treat them with a soldering iron or heat them to harden them.

You can view photos of cleaning brushes in this article.

The second option for making a brush for 10 minutes

  1. The base of a plastic bottle, the widest part, is used as the base of the brush;
  2. We cut the base into horizontal sections, there should be from 5 to 8 pieces in total;
  3. We make large cuts on the sides and make a hole in the center of each part, suitable in diameter to the cable;
  4. We thread the connector into the hole and secure it on one side with a washer;
  5. We use hardware as a hook for the load;
  6. We attach a round or oblong metal weight to the hook.

A chimney brush is the main tool for stove hygiene. Its design is similar to a bottle brush - between two twisted thick wires that form a central rod, thin wire bristles are located perpendicular to the rod. The bristles create several round layers (2-3). The length of the bristles determines the diameter of the pipe that this tool will effectively clean. The central rod has an eye at one end and a thread at the other. The eyelet and thread allow you to attach extensions to the brush, which allow you to pull this tool inside the pipe to scrape soot from the walls.

Plastic brush

Some suggest making ruffs with your own hands from plastic bottles. Unfortunately, such a device containing plastic will in most cases be ineffective, since soot deposits on the walls of chimneys can be harder than the plastic tool itself. Soot deposits are especially strong after repeated heating firewood from pine and other coniferous species.

Not only the hardness of the cleaning element of the brush is required, but also the strength of the fastening of this element. The significant forces generated when dragging the brush inside the chimney will quickly destroy plastic elements its designs.

The same applies to devices with plastic bristles. Such brushes are cheaper than all-metal ones, but in terms of cleaning quality and service life they are noticeably inferior to all-metal ones. Brushes with plastic bristles are only suitable for cleaning chimneys after using products chemical cleaning from soot. Since under the influence of such agents soot becomes brittle and is much easier to remove from the walls, a brush with plastic bristles may be quite sufficient.

If you have repeatedly used chemicals, and you are sure that the strength of soot deposits is low, you can make a brush with your own hands and clean the chimney with it.

Made from plastic

To make a ruff with your own hands you will need:

  • thin steel rope, longer than the chimney, 2-3 mm thick;
  • two plastic bottles of 1-2 liters, depending on the diameter of the chimney that needs to be cleaned;
  • wire with a diameter of 1-2 mm;
  • used or damaged welding electrode with a diameter of 3-5 mm or a piece of straightened wire of the same diameter and length;
  • two plastic bottle caps;
  • a load weighing 2-5 kg, such that it can easily pass suspended into the pipe that needs to be cleaned;
  • cut the wall of each bottle from the bottom to the neck in increments of 1.5-2 cm, like a Chinese lantern;
  • make a hole in the center of each bottle cap so that an electrode or the same piece of wire can be inserted into it;
  • Screw the caps onto the bottles tightly;
  • insert one bottle into another with the caps in one direction;
  • attach an electrode or a piece of wire at one end to the load so that, by grasping the electrode, you can lift the load;
  • make a hole in the center of the bottoms of both bottles with a piece of wire or a heated electrode;
  • pass an electrode or similar piece of wire attached to the load through the holes in the bottoms and caps of the bottles;
  • bring the caps and bottoms of the bottles as close as possible and fix their position by bending the free end of a piece of wire or electrode into a ring;
  • straighten the cut walls of the bottles, pulling them out;
  • attach the cable to the ring on the electrode or the same piece of wire using a clamp;
  • We attach any handle that is convenient to hold the cable to the free end of the cable.

Owners of fireplaces, stoves and other structures of this type are probably satisfied with their situation. No wonder. If a fireplace is lit in the house, the feeling of comfort and coziness immediately increases.

The whole family often gathers near it to relax, exchange news or just chat. In addition, just watching the fire is seriously calming.

But the presence of a fireplace or stove in the house also imposes some responsibility on the owner. It is common for smoke exhaust pipes or regular chimneys to become clogged from time to time. If you ignore the requirements for regular cleaning of chimney pipes, you may be in for an unpleasant surprise.

As for the actual cleaning, here, in fact, everything is very simple and clear. Professionals recommend that beginners use a brush in two ways:

  1. Traditional, when the brush is manipulated using a cable.
  2. As a piercing element.

In the first case we're talking about about the cleaning process using conventional methods, when a brush is lowered inside the pipe on a wire, then by manipulating it, the insides of the pipes are cleaned.

In the second case, the main work is done by the kernel. It serves as a weighting agent. The brush is simply thrown into the pipe several times.

Let's look at each method in more detail.

Normal cleaning

The standard procedure is to use a brush along with a cable or tube.

Stages of work:

  1. We are preparing the instrument.
  2. We secure ourselves on the roof. We close all exits.
  3. We lower the brush inside the chimney.
  4. We clean the entire pipe or specific areas.
  5. If necessary, repeat the procedure.
  6. We remove the remaining deposits from the fireplace (they will all fall down).

Nothing complicated or incomprehensible. However, there are several nuances.

It is very important to close all vents from the fireplace or stove. Only the pipe itself should remain open. This requirement should not be ignored.

The cleaning process itself is quite simple. The brush is lowered to the desired depth, and then moved up and down several dozen times. If the blockage is broken, we move on. If not, then you need to work again.

The same method is used to completely clean the pipe. The brush removes most of the deposits along its entire length. And nothing more is required from him.

In case of large deposits, it is more convenient to use a brush with a rod base. Here it is reasonable to apply force and the blockage will certainly give way.

In some situations, a small weight weighing several kilograms is hung on the ruff. It creates a counter force, which is often necessary when removing solid deposits.

Brush with a weight for cleaning pipes (video)

Cleaning with weights

More interesting option. Here you need to use a ruff as a natural core. A weighting agent is hung on its lower hook. Its weight can be anything; it is advisable to calculate the weight depending on the complexity of cleaning.

Then the brush is lowered inside the chimney and thrown. In free fall, it clears the edges of the pipe and breaks through the blockage.

If the tool does not work the first time, it is lifted by the cable and tried again. And so on until the result is achieved.

This method is effective due to the greater application of force and the possibility of fairly fine control of the brush, with minimum costs time and effort.
