The mower has a number of advantages even over industrial ones, namely: a large working width - 500 mm, mulches the green mass of grass (with the basket removed and the guide sleeve removed, with the top window closed); mows down the crushed mass, throwing it to the left; has a large basket for chopped herbs. And the main thing is its low cost. We often use a lawn mower to feed farm animals, so it rarely sits idle.

The lawnmower engine is used from a Ural-2M chainsaw with a power of 5 hp, with minor modifications: an imported carburetor from a scooter is installed through a textolite adapter about 15 mm thick. With such a carburetor, the engine runs smoother and more stable in all modes, besides, it consumes less fuel and starts easier.

A gas tank, also from a Ural chainsaw, with a capacity of 1.6 liters (it is more suitable in shape and design to the design of the power plant) is screwed directly to the base of the engine gearbox via a bracket. To avoid carburetor clogging, a fuel filter from the same scooter is connected to the fuel line.

The lawn mower's transmission has an inertial clutch, which avoids serious damage if a foreign object accidentally gets under the blade (for example, large branches). These “hoops” are welded together so that the width of the resulting rim is 110 mm. The remaining parts of the frame, including the handles, are made of a square pipe with dimensions of 20x20x1.5 mm, and only on the front axle a square pipe with dimensions of 15x15x1.5 mm (made from leftover metal) is used.

The handle has an articulation that allows you to adjust it in height, and fold it in the opposite direction for storage in winter - the handle will take up less space. The wheels are used from baby strollers and have different diameters (it’s easier to find two wheels than four identical ones). And one more thing, from experience: in the previous version of the lawn mower, they used wheels of small diameter (side wheels from a children's bicycle), they were not very convenient to use (they constantly caught on something or ran into small obstacles). I did not adjust the blades according to the height of the grass being cut because I had decided on this parameter a long time ago. It is approximately 50 mm from the ground plane to the plane of the knives. I found this 50 mm experimentally: if you cut the grass shorter, it doesn’t turn out very nicely (the root part of the stems - the turf - is exposed, and it is either white or yellow) - as a result, the mowed lawn had an unpresentable appearance, and also in a basket with green mass “pulls” the earth (animals are not very happy with such “seasoning”). When the stubble is high, the area appears unmown.

In total it took for the frame: strips with a cross section of 30×4 mm - 3.5 m; square pipes 20x20x1.5 mm – 5.1 m; square pipes 15x15x1.5 mm -0.4 m.

To install the knives, a steel part of the hub was welded to the frame, which was removed from the aluminum part of the wheel of the IZH motorcycle. Accordingly, the axle was used from the front wheel of this motorcycle; it was only necessary to replace the bearings with sealed ones, since the “original” ones were worn out. As you can see, a driven sprocket Z2-11 teeth is welded to the top of the axle. Between the sprocket and the hub bearing there is an 8 mm thick washer made from a water pipe with an internal diameter of 15 mm. On the other, lower side of the axle, a flange from the water pump of the UAZ-31512 car is “planted”; it fits along the inner diameter to the hub axis. I only had to grind the axle with an angle grinder and “select” the metal for the wedge connection between the flange and the axle.

Later, after assembly, a side “window” was cut out on the left side of the casing to throw the green mass to the side. to the left. This layout option allows you to mow (mulch) the green mass of grass with less load on the lawn mower motor, and use it even in heavily overgrown areas.

The lawn mower blade is cut from ordinary non-hardened steel with a thickness of 3.5 mm. This is done so that if the knife hits a serious obstacle, it will not break and part of it will not fly off, but it will only bend, but remain in place. The knife has two curved “blades” cut from stainless steel 1.5 mm thick. The blades are connected with 5 mm steel rivets. The blades “feed” the green mass into the basket. The blade was balanced directly on the mower shaft (until the chain drive was connected) - the shaft rotated easily and the blade. installed on the workplace, rotated and sharpened at “heavy points” until balance was established.

The basket is welded from a steel rod with a diameter of 7 mm. It is covered with a green polyethylene mesh 2 mm thick with a cell measuring 10x10 mm. Subsequently it turned out that they were too large and had to be covered with mosquito netting on top. In total, it took about 12 m of metal rod, two simple canopies and two linear meters of polyethylene mesh to make the basket.

The basket in the lower front part has two welded attachment loops to the lawn mower body, and in the upper part there are two eyes for spring stoppers.

The basket lid is connected to the basket by two small window scales. There is also a lid locking device, it is made on the principle of a clamping screw and an eyelet. The basket also has a handle for easy removal and carrying.

The guide sleeve is made of galvanized sheet metal 0.5 mm thick, and since it has a slightly difficult shape to bend, it was cut from separate parts. These parts are connected to each other by means of a narrow corner with rivets, cut from the same galvanized sheet. The sleeve itself is attached in three places to the body with M6 bolts.

Especially if you bought a modern chainsaw, and an old, domestic one, such as “Ural” or “Druzhba”, is lying around idle.

In this regard, unnecessary domestic chainsaws can be used for other purposes, in particular to create a simple lawn mower. You can use the Ural, Druzhba or any other chainsaw to build a homemade lawn mower, while maintaining the main function of the chainsaw, if necessary. The domestic tool is more powerful and can be used for mowing lawns with stones and weeds.

In its simplest form, a lawn mower consists of the following components and parts:

    The engine is the main mechanism.

    The frame on which all mower components are attached.

  • Handles and control system parts.

The saw motor, together with the gearbox, rotated 90 degrees so that the shaft is at the bottom, is screwed onto the frame. To do this, use a hole in the gearbox to secure the tire and two studs for fastening the flywheel housing, located below. A piece of pipe with a diameter of 50 mm and a length of 80 mm is coaxially welded onto the “star” of the chainsaw, the ends of which are processed on a lathe. In this way, a telescopic shaft is obtained from two pipes connected by M6 bolts with locknuts. The bolts are located diametrically opposite, and several holes are made - this will allow you to adjust the height of the cut lawn grass using pipes that are shifted relative to each other and partially compensate for the imbalance. The base of the knife is prepared - a metal disk with a diameter of 180 mm made of sheet steel 4 mm thick is welded to the second pipe.

Homemade lawn mower blade

Three knives are made from an old wood hacksaw - a 30 mm wide strip is cut from the blade using a grinder and cut into pieces 120 mm long. Holes are made in the knives using electric welding. The knives made in this way are screwed to the base with M6 bolts and locknuts at an angle of 120 degrees so that they rotate freely on the axes. This is done so that when meeting a stone or some other obstacle, the knives fold. They are separated by centrifugal force during rotation. Such knives are enough for a season of full use, but sometimes you can sharpen the knives and use them again. The total diameter of the disc with knives is 480 mm; during operation, the knives deviate slightly and the mowing strip is 400 mm. When making a larger trolley, the length of the blades can be increased and then more grass can be captured when mowing.

In essence, there are many options for making functional knives, as well as materials for making them. The main thing is to sharpen them well, center them (so that there is no vibration) and securely fasten them.

You can also use tool steel flats with a thickness of 2-3 mm and a width of 20 to 50 mm as knives. The thinner the knife, the better it cuts. However, a thick knife is stronger, which, given the obstacles encountered in its path in the form of bumps, various foreign objects and even stones, is very important.

You can use various double knife options. The first, classic one, is a knife in the form of a long strip, which is attached to the mandrel symmetrically relative to its axis. The length of the knife in this case is equal to the width of the grip - usually 30-50 cm. In our case - 48 cm. The sharpened ends of the strip act as cutters. The knife and mandrel are one integral part in the form of a plate, to which a flange with a mounting hole is welded or rivet-attached.

The second option is two short knives 50-80 mm long, which are attached to the edges of the mandrel at an angle of 180° to each other. They can be positioned straight or with a slight slope. The knives can be secured with two or one bolt or rivets. The first method is more reliable, however, fastening with one bolt allows the knife to fold (without breaking or deforming) when it hits an obstacle - a stone or a bump. The fastening of folding knives must be inspected regularly, because... Over time, the screws may wear out.

The steel for knives must be sufficiently hard, but not brittle, otherwise the knives may break, which will not only require their replacement, but also create the risk of injury from a flying piece. The experience of amateur craftsmen shows that wood hacksaw blades 2 mm thick are very suitable as a material for lawn mower blades. The technology for making a knife from them is simple. Two strip-shaped blanks are marked on the canvas (or one long knife is made from the canvas with sharpening at the ends and holes for fastening in the middle), which are then cut out with a grinder. Holes for fastening are drilled in the workpieces. After this, all that remains is to sharpen the knives, attach them to the frame and center them.

If drilling holes is problematic, then you can place the blade on a metal surface with a hole slightly larger in diameter than the hole in the blade should be and hit it with a punch. The protrusion formed after the impact is removed with a file (if the metal is soft enough) or with a sharpener. If the hole does not meet the required diameter, the process is repeated.

It works like this homemade lawn mower easily, mows thick grass and small bushes without much effort, and is not afraid of encountering stones and other hard obstacles. If you need the chainsaw again, you just need to unscrew it from the frame, replace the sprocket and install the bar and “steering wheel”.
