DIY paint booth in the garage. Do-it-yourself spray booth Do-it-yourself paint booth for wooden products

A car painting booth is a small box in which a ventilation system, filters, thermal sensors and other elements are installed that ensure high-quality processing of large structures and small parts. Designing a paint booth takes a lot of time, and building it takes even longer.

Companies involved in the assembly of paint boxes and conveyors offer high-quality work at high prices, so it’s cheaper to do everything yourself. True, in this case it will take a lot of time, effort and patience.

Paint booths: design requirements

To create your own paint booth you will need the following items:

  • A garage or other small structure with solid walls and floors.
  • Ready ventilation system.
  • Filter system.
  • Thermal generator.
  • Wall upholstery material.
  • Reinforcement grid for floor covering.

Each element of the spray booth has individual properties that are required for execution:

  1. The walls must be made of plastic lining or steel sheets that protect the room from ignition and fire. The advantage of this material is easy cleaning that does not require special skills, tightness, and environmental friendliness (lining does not emit toxic fumes even at a temperature of 50 degrees). The cavities between the walls should be filled with mineral wool or other insulating composition to ensure comfortable proper conditions inside the room at any time of the year.
  2. The floor must provide good air circulation. To do this, its level must be raised by 15 cm and a grille must be fixed through which polluted air and dyes will flow. If you are not satisfied with the option with a grille, you can organize trenches through which unobstructed air exhaust will take place.
  3. The main and emergency doors must be finished with fire-resistant material. The main entrance should be strengthened and sealed to prevent dust and dirt from entering the room.
  4. The ventilation system is installed in such a way that it prevents the formation of “dead zones” - a lack of air exchange in some places, which causes paint dust to hang in the air and spoil the quality of the product.
  5. The size of the spray booth should not be less than 4x6 m.

Working principle of the spray booth

In a paint booth, the main work cycle is to ensure good air circulation:

  • air supply from the street into the chamber with pre-filtration;
  • cleaning air containing varnish and paint residues;
  • release of processed purified air into the external environment;
  • heating the incoming air to the specified parameters (20-30 degrees);
  • drying the painted product - continuous circulation of chamber air and heating it to 60 degrees.

Spray booths have a number of advantages over conventional booths. The professional unit is designed in such a way that untreated air from the street cannot get into the room in any way - this task is carried out by exhaust fans that drive air from the chamber in one direction.

So that the air is in the box, it must pass through a filter system. The supply fan draws in air and moves it in one direction.

You can use a room in which a heating system is not installed as a box - it will be replaced by artificial material in the walls and a heat gun. How can you make a paint booth out of a garage?

In this case, it is advisable to make the floor from concrete or dense metal that is resistant to acids and solvents. If the floor is raised, access bridges will need to be attached to the garage entrance.

Building a paint booth

How to make a spray booth with your own hands, having a standard set of tools and a set of required settings in your arsenal? The process will be long and painstaking, but if all norms and rules are followed, the result will be worthy.

Preparatory work in the construction of a paint booth requires extreme care. First of all, the minimum dimensions of the garage should not be less than 4x6 m. Before installing all boxing systems, it is necessary to finish the internal walls, floor, and provide high-quality lighting around the entire perimeter of the chamber.

If we are talking about polymer painting, then a do-it-yourself powder coating chamber will take even more time and expense, since you will also have to purchase a melting furnace.

Ventilation must be selected before any preparatory work is carried out, since the methods of air supply and exhaust are different, which means their location will change.

Selecting material for the spray booth

Interior decoration has its own rules and features:

  1. Material – plastic lining or metal profile, non-woven anti-dust material is suitable for areas near which paints and varnishes are located.
  2. The insulation of the box is non-flammable insulation (mineral wool).
  3. The color of the walls and ceiling is strictly white. It improves color perception, and therefore the quality of work. For such purposes, powder paints are used, which are characterized by better fire resistance and durability. A do-it-yourself powder chamber is possible if there is a special electrostatic spray gun that connects compressed air, or a compressor.
  4. The absence of any items that collect dust and emit toxic fumes and have a fleecy coating. Even thin fabrics should not be present in the paint booth.
  5. It is obligatory to have a utility room in the chamber for operator-painters. All equipment, consumables and personal items are stored there. Due to the risk of explosion, the utility room is reinforced with fire-resistant material with good tightness to prevent the formation of chemical reactions.
  6. Covering light sources with a transparent film reinforced with an adhesive base. The film completely protects fluorescent lamps from paint and vapors, thereby preventing fire. It does not tear even after prolonged use and enhances the brightness of the light.

Wall and floor finishing

The walls and floor must be resistant to fire, so you need to immediately reinforce them with steel layers. It is necessary to raise the level on the floor by 15-20 cm and cover it with a reinforcement grid. It will allow air to pass through and retain paint drops. An exhaust system must be installed in the opening between the base and the grille, through which contaminated recycled air will be removed.

You can get by with a regular floor, protected from paint and solvents, but then you will need to dig trenches.

“The ideal option would be two parallel trenches, connecting into one at the exit from the chamber. They need to be covered with a dense grid to level the floor and at the same time protect them from harmful chemicals.”

The distance between the base and the grille should narrow in the direction where the recycled air is driven. Otherwise, air exchange will be disrupted. A filter system is also installed in the floor through which air masses will pass.

Here it is better to use a cardboard or fiberglass filter. It retains even small dirt particles well and is easy to operate. The service life of such filters is long, and replacement and disposal can be done even by a non-professional.

Ventilation system arrangement

For smaller spray booths, single-motor systems are suitable, which apply pressure to the paint mist and force it to settle into holes in the floor. For double-motor ventilation systems, the operating principle is to supply and pump air into the overhead space of the chamber and powerfully exhaust recycled air to the street.

The exhaust fan is located in the floor, and the supply fan is located in the ceiling. How to build a spray booth with your own hands, taking into account all aspects of design?

If a large flow of vehicles is planned, it is better to install dual-engine systems. They circulate air and maintain the desired temperature. The cost of such ventilation is higher, but the guarantee and payback through the supply of new cars that require high-quality painting are more significant.

It is better to install a fine air filter above the ceiling in the air box. The industrial fan itself is housed in a special housing that resembles a snail in appearance. Air is pumped into it and supplied to the chamber room.

The ventilation outlet and inlet must be positioned correctly to avoid the formation of “dead zones”. Be sure to purchase a control panel with which you can regulate the power of the air flow. If clogs occur in the filters, you can use the control panel to solve this problem.

Lighting

How to make a spray booth of excellent quality? Proper installation of lighting fixtures provides good conditions for comfortable work. It is advisable to install fluorescent lamps that improve visibility and have a long service life. Plus, they do not create glare or reflections, which is especially important when painting with mother-of-pearl.

The best lighting setting is 800-1000 lux. To do this, you need to install lamps on the ceiling and side walls. To improve visibility of the underside of the vehicle, long fluorescent lamps are required, located on the walls on either side of the work area. How to make a spray booth yourself in compliance with all requirements?

It is important to ensure maneuverability for the painter operator and unobstructed access to any area of the box. No permits or technical skills are required to build the camera. The main thing is to comply with the basic design parameters and not forget about safety.

Installation of heat generators that regulate the air temperature in the room and provide high-quality safe drying of the painted product must be carried out strictly according to the instructions or with the advice of a specialist. An economical option is a generator that runs on gas and waste oil. The operation of such equipment is simple.

Safety

How to make a camera that is not only comfortable to work in, but also safe? Only by observing the rules for operating devices and systems:

  • All heating elements must be protected with heat-resistant housings.
  • Devices powered by electricity must be grounded.
  • The insulation of the chamber must be made from non-flammable dense compounds.
  • Fans and lighting fixtures must be covered with dense explosion-proof material.
  • Correctly design the location of supply and exhaust ventilation.
  • The fan that draws air outside should be located near larger concentrations of dyes and solvents.

The production of paint booths is gradual and takes a lot of time, but the result is worth it.

Proper painting of a car can only be carried out in a box where there is no dust, normal humidity and no drafts. This could be a professional box or a simple do-it-yourself spray booth. Any painting processes, car body repairs and touch-up of some parts are carried out indoors with optimal factors. A DIY paint booth is quite a complex project. But if you only need to do a small amount of work, you can use simple and inexpensive technologies.

If you want to paint a car professionally, the spray booth must be of high quality, large enough and equipped with everything necessary for convenient work. There should be no unnecessary items here; the entire room should be made completely sealed and comfortable for performing all necessary work. This is the only way the car will be painted with high quality, and the applied layers of paintwork will not come off with the first precipitation or frost. It is necessary to understand in more detail the issue of creating such an object.

Improvised box for painting your car

If you decide to update the paintwork on your car or do body repairs yourself, you can prepare your garage and use it as a paint booth. To do this, you will need to remove everything unnecessary from the garage and watch several useful videos with instructions on creating optimal conditions. If the garage is not heated, it is better to choose mid-autumn or spring, when the temperature is quite high. It is worth considering the following requirements:

  • pay attention to the size - it is important that there is room around the car to move when painting;
  • Do-it-yourself exhaust hood in the paint booth is of great importance - ventilation must be active;

  • sometimes you will have to dry the air using ceramic or other types of electric heaters;
  • it is important to clean the walls, floor and ceiling from dust and all kinds of contaminants, and ensure that there is no condensation;
  • You should prepare everything in advance for normal movement around the garage with a spray bottle in your hands.

You will have to install a compressor and also acquire the required length of hoses. The car must fit completely; the garage door will have to be closed. A good solution would be to install a dust filter on the supply ventilation. It could even be a primitive device with a low price tag. As you can see, a DIY paint booth in the garage will require a lot of effort, but can save you quite a lot of money.

Organization of professional car painting booth

You can watch expert videos, study drawings, but still not understand how to build a paint booth with the necessary technical characteristics with your own hands. To paint a car, it is important to consider enough space around the car. Already at the stage of creating drawings, you will have to plan all the sizes and volumes, also taking into account the communications in the room. The following aspects will be important:

  1. Ventilation. This point often takes up to half of the total budget. Install high-quality industrial filters at the inlet and outlet, use several supply and exhaust channels.
  2. Interior finishing material. It should be a practical and smooth version of the material from which fresh paint can be easily washed off. Otherwise, you will have to constantly order chemical cleaning of the room.
  3. Climate control. This system must be able to control air temperature and humidity. For different types of car paint, you will need different environmental conditions.
  4. Auto drying mode after painting there is a significant increase in temperature for several hours, which also requires high tightness and thermal insulation of the building. Otherwise, the cost of a spray booth will be huge.

Not always, even for specialized purposes, all these features are taken into account. Cars can also be painted in less modern and expensive conditions. At the same time, some elements can not be purchased from complex expensive devices, but can be done with your own hands. To create good equipment you will need to purchase really high-quality blueprints. The best option would be to schedule construction separately for your project.

Ventilation - the main aspects of air input and output

In a paint booth, one of the most important aspects is ventilation. This is an opportunity to introduce dried air into a room and bring it to the desired condition in terms of cleanliness. Ventilation in a paint booth can be done with high quality with your own hands. To do this, you will need to buy reliable materials and organize their high-quality installation. It is worth considering some specific points:

  • In such a facility for cars, it is important that there is no dust, so the ventilation holes should not be open;
  • You can do the installation yourself, but it is best to buy materials and objects that are ready-made and of high quality;
  • you should organize a type of ventilation in which you can regulate the inflow and outflow of air;
  • An excellent solution would be to install fans on all ventilation openings to control the process.

To create proper conditions in the paint booth in winter, it may be necessary to heat the air for the ventilation holes. This will help supply already heated and dried air into the room in winter or autumn. This way you can paint the car yourself and not have to pay for the services of expensive workshops. It is not always possible to do this at low cost, so the benefits first need to be calculated.

Let's sum it up

There are many tips on how to make a camera for painting a car with your own hands. You can read incredible tips online about painting a car just outdoors using a can of some secret paint application technology. But rest assured that only a properly prepared box will be a truly effective way to renew or apply paintwork. No other option will work as efficiently and effectively.

You can often create good conditions for painting with your own hands right in your garage. But it is not always possible to complete all tasks with truly high quality. Therefore, you need to remember that a professional spray booth is the best solution. It’s no wonder that large companies spend a lot of money on creating and maintaining equipment in excellent condition. The cost of a paint booth depends on what your goals are. Sometimes you can make do with the means at hand and not spend extra money. But most often the costs will be quite large.

Or furniture is a rather complex and responsible process, which is most often entrusted to specialists who have equipped cameras. However, it is quite possible to make such a device yourself, and you will not only save money, but also organize your own business. Before starting work, you need to familiarize yourself with the requirements that are important to comply with to achieve the best effect.

Preparatory work

Paint booths are made using a list of specific tools as well as materials. Among other things, it is important to find the room in which the equipment will be located. It could be a garage. Stock up on a heat fan, ventilation system and a heat gun. This list is mandatory. When expanding the list, you can add doors, fans, gates, lamps, control panels, etc. Everything will depend on desire and financial capabilities. The camera must be automated and have the ability to not only paint a car or other products, but also dry them. The functional components are supply ventilation, which is equipped with multi-level filters for cleaning. This should include a chamber for painting and further drying, a heat pump, a ventilation unit and automation. Ventilation equipment must operate on the exhaust principle and have an air filter.

Preparing the premises

Paint booths are manufactured taking into account the requirements for the premises. The walls must be fireproof, washable and as airtight as possible. There should not be any particular difficulties with the above points. Walls are most often made of steel and are well insulated. The two layers that will form the basis of the system must be filled with heat-saving safe materials. The floor also needs to be done taking into account certain rules, among them it is worth highlighting the design of this part of the room using several layers of lattice covering, which will ensure air removal. should form the basis of emergency and entrance doors that protect the car from dust and other contaminants coming from the street. This is why tightness is so important. The door should open easily, which will ensure the safety of the master.

Arrangement of the lighting system

Paint booths are manufactured taking into account the arrangement of suitable. Using fluorescent lamps, you can ensure the best visibility and the absence of glare, as well as unnecessary shadows. According to technological rules, illumination should be from 600 to 1000 lux. The most successful and effective option is to use fluorescent lamps, which are located on the side walls and under the ceiling. However, this approach involves some disadvantages; during painting, the master will not have visibility of the lower part of the car or product. In order to eliminate unnecessary glare and insufficient light, you need to place large oblong lamps along the wall. Paint booths are manufactured based on the requirements of free space, which will guarantee ease of use. You should not choose a room whose area is less than 4 x 6 meters. It is recommended to install the camera on a concrete base, but it is worth considering that this approach is very expensive. You can resort to an alternative solution, which involves using a metal frame as a base. It is necessary to place a valve, an exhaust system and a filter under the floor.

Ventilation system design

The spray booth must have a high-quality ventilation system, as it is one of the key factors. The system must be equipped with a filter, which will ensure air purification, eliminating the deposition of paint mist. Single-engine and dual-engine units are available for sale. The first type blows air from above, as a result the fog settles down and is discharged through a special hole. Two motors provide air injection and exhaustion. When a spray booth is made, it can also be equipped with an air filter. It is best to choose a two-phase variety; this model will be able to capture large contaminants and will also get rid of small particles. It is important to choose ventilation systems whose air flow speed is equal to the limit of 20 to 25 cm per second.

Choosing a dryer for a spray booth

If the drawings of which are presented in the article will be made, then it is important to provide it with drying. Heat generators that can be found on the modern market operate on waste oil, gas and fuel. Depending on the needs of the camera, you can choose a generator of different power; it can be equipped with an automatic timer and other functionality. They are most often used for drying painted cars and products. They are easy to use and provide the desired effect at a significant financial cost.

Arrangement of the internal space of the camera

It is worth completely eliminating the presence of all kinds of materials inside on which dust can accumulate. This includes furniture, carpets, fabric materials and soft corners. At the same time, the owner will be able to carry out cleaning quite simply, ensuring the normal condition of the interior space.

Choosing a color for the camera

When painting booths for furniture are made, the walls and ceiling are most often painted white. Experts recommend using powder paint for this. This approach will ensure correct color rendering and also facilitate the dyeing process. It is advisable to provide the cell with a utility room in which all kinds of items, equipment and inventory will be stored.

Dyeing equipment

If you are making a spray booth, the instructions presented in the article can be used by you to carry out this work. It is important to prepare your dyeing equipment. Spray guns that can operate at high and low pressure are suitable. The first type requires the use of a compressor that pumps air, creating pressure for painting.

As for low-pressure pneumatic devices, they operate on compressed air. On sale you can find both pneumatic and electric. Expensive equipment is a combination machine that combines the first and second types of devices. Such systems combine the best characteristics of airless and air methods. The spray booth, a photo of which is presented in the article, can be equipped with one or several of the above devices. Experts recommend using airless equipment, as it is the most optimal and efficient. At the same time, particles of varnish and paint will be sprayed from the gun under impressive pressure.

Conclusion

If you are creating a spray booth with a water curtain, you can use airless equipment, which ensures savings in materials consumed during the work. If we are talking about a powder chamber, then with its help it will be possible to save solvents. This equipment allows you to work with single-engine ventilation, guaranteeing high-quality coverage of the surface of the car body or any other product.

A painting chamber is a specially equipped room in which painting of cars and other metal, plastic or wooden products is carried out. A factory-made paint shop costs from 500 thousand rubles, while a paint booth made independently will cost you no more than 100 thousand.
You can even build a painting booth in a garage

This article provides instructions that you can follow to set up. We will look at chambers, underground floors, ventilation systems, lighting, drying and tell you what is necessary.

DIY paint job

The painting and drying chamber, as a rule, is a metal, or less often plasterboard, box, equipped inside an existing room. It makes sense to use a garage to convert it into a paint shop. If it is small in size, then the entire building is used - its internal walls are sheathed, and the ventilation equipment units are moved outside the garage. If the dimensions allow, the box is created in a separate part of the room.

WATCH VIDEO INSTRUCTIONS

The room for painting must have a sufficient amount of free space for work - the minimum size of boxes for painting cars is 4 * 6 m. A mini painting booth, designed to work with small surfaces - metal doors, car body elements, has dimensions within 3 * 3 m.

It is necessary to build a painting chamber from the foundation

Setting up a workshop with your own hands begins with the installation of load-bearing floors - walls, ceiling, floor and installation of entrance gates.

The ceilings are subject to a general requirement for tightness - it is unacceptable for air from the environment to enter the box, since the dust contained in it interferes with painting work - mechanical dirt that gets on the car body cancels out all the efforts of the painter.

The technology for installing box walls is selected based on the size of the room:

  • When remodeling a small garage, the inner surface of its walls is sheathed with sheet metal with preliminary thermal insulation with mineral or basalt wool (50 mm thick);
  • When creating a “room within a room”, when setting up a mini paint booth with your own hands, a supporting frame of the required dimensions is welded from a metal profile, which is sheathed with sandwich panels made of two sheets of metal and insulation located between them.

The floor covering of the painting box acts as an element of room ventilation - it contains air ducts and floor filters. To place them, a “second” floor is required, on top of the existing floor. This is done in two ways:

  • A do-it-yourself mini paint shop is set up using a lattice platform raised above the floor to a height of 30 cm. The platform is welded from reinforcing rods with a diameter of 14-16 mm, the lattice pitch is 6 cm. A ladder is used to drive the car onto the platform.
  • Converting a garage into a paint shop involves creating deep trenches for laying air ducts around the perimeter of the existing floor. The depth of the trenches is 28-30 cm. After placing the filters and ventilation ducts, the trenches are covered with a reinforcement grid. The inner walls of the recesses are filled with concrete.

A do-it-yourself painting and drying booth is created using entrance gates of a double-leaf or three-leaf type. It is rational to use double-leaf structures if there is a separate door for personnel entry; if this is not available, choose a gate with 3 leaves, one of which will be used as a service door.

WATCH VIDEO INSTRUCTIONS

When installing the box ceiling, a hole is formed in the central part of the chamber for installing a ceiling air duct. Here you can purchase a ready-made plenum, or weld it yourself from galvanized sheet steel (the structure is insulated with mineral wool along the side and top contours). At the bottom, the ventilation duct is covered with a metal grille, which holds a ceiling fine filter in the air duct.

Air ventilation systems

The ventilation system is a mandatory attribute of the painting booth

The ventilation of the painting chamber is selected based on the size of the room. There are two types of air supply systems - single-engine (supply) and dual-engine (supply and exhaust):

  1. The do-it-yourself camera can be equipped with single-motor ventilation, which contains only an inflow fan that forces air into the box through the ceiling plenum. When supplied, the supply air flow deposits the paint mist generated during the painting process to the floor, where, due to the pressure difference, it is discharged through the air ducts of the floor covering;
  2. Double-engine ventilation technology consists of using two fans - one of which (connected to the ceiling plenum) pumps air into the box, the second (floor) - pumps out exhaust air to the outside.

The ventilation motor for the painting booth must have a performance that provides the required air exchange rate in the room. The standard value of air exchange per 1 m2 of box area is 800 m3/hour (for a room with an area of 4x7 m - 20-25 tons m3/hour). When using dual-motor ventilation, supply and exhaust fans with the same performance are always used.

The ventilation equipment for the painting booth is equipped with three types of filters:

  1. Coarse cleaning - installed on the air intake of the supply fan, cleans the supplied air from major mechanical contaminants;
  2. Fine cleaning - placed inside the ceiling plenum, cleans the supplied air from dust and small particles;
  3. Floor-standing - placed in exhaust air intakes, it cleans the exhaust air from toxic paint fumes and suspended particles settling on the fan blades.

It is dangerous to paint without a hood

In industrial conditions, paint booths with a water curtain are produced, in which the supplied air flow is passed through a cascade of water falling inside the walls, but when manufactured independently, this filtration technology is extremely difficult to implement.

Lighting equipment

Lighting in the paint shop is provided using LED or fluorescent lamps located between the walls of the box and the ceiling. The lamps are placed around the perimeter of the room with equal spacing from each other - on the longitudinal walls there are 4 lamps, on the transverse walls there are 2 lamps.

The lighting of the painting chamber is directional, the lamps are installed at an angle of 450 so that the light flux converges in the center of the box, at the location of the part to be painted. In order to protect the lamps from clouding due to paint mist, they are mounted in a block housing made of crystalline or plastic glass.

When installing the light in the spray booth, observe the following requirements:

  • The lighting standard for medium-sized paint boxes (4*7 m) is 1-1.5 thousand lux;
  • Color rendering index - 85 (the shade of the emitted light corresponds to high-brightness natural sunlight);
  • Light dispersion is uniform throughout the entire perimeter of the box, without shadow areas (if necessary, additional horizontal blocks of lamps are installed on the walls of the chamber, raised 40-50 cm from the floor);
  • Flicker is not allowed.

It is rational to use light-emitting diode (LED) lamps as lighting devices. Among their advantages are the color rendering index, which is natural for the spectral sensitivity of human vision, which has a positive effect on the quality of painting work, low energy consumption and high efficiency compared to other types of lamps.

Dyeing equipment

Overalls and a respirator will protect you from chemical paint components

To carry out painting work on a car, you will need to purchase a set of painting equipment. A kit that includes everything for a paint shop will cost you $300-$1,000, depending on the functional level of the units. The list of necessary equipment also includes auxiliary devices.

Compressors, based on their design features, are classified into piston and screw:

  • Piston compressors are distinguished by their compact dimensions, wear resistance and low cost, but they have poor productivity and require regular maintenance (replacement of seals, valves, etc.).
  • Screw compressors are more expensive - it makes sense to choose them if you plan to paint cars professionally; such units are suitable for carrying out a larger volume of work - they are productive and not prone to overheating.

When equipping your workshop with your own hands, choose a compressor with a power of 2.5 kW, with an operating pressure within 10 MPa and a capacity of 300 to 500 l/min. In addition to the compressor, a filter unit and moisture from the supplied air is purchased.

It is rational to buy spray guns (spray guns) with replaceable nozzles, since to work with different nozzles of different sizes:

  • Application of primers - nozzle 1.5-1.7 mm;
  • Application of varnish and acrylic paints - 1.4-1.5 mm;
  • Binder application (when painting with mother-of-pearl and metallic) - 1.3 mm.

Choose reliable painting tools

You will also need:

  • Sanding machine - for matting the surface of the body before painting;
  • Polishing machine - for finishing the applied paint coating.

Don’t forget to purchase a paint mask, since applying varnishes and paints is accompanied by toxic fumes from the solvent added to them.

Drying equipment

The drying chamber can be equipped with your own hands in two ways - using infrared or convection drying. The latter option is more labor-intensive, but as a result it ensures uniform drying of the applied coating by blowing hot air onto the painted surface.

To achieve a similar result with infrared drying, in which it is not the air in the paint box that is heated, but the surface of the painted part itself, you need to use several separate heating elements located around the perimeter of the box.

The convection system consists of a heat exchanger (a metal container into which a supply fan blows air) and a burner running on diesel fuel or gas, which heats the flow passing through the heat exchanger.

The burner power is selected based on the productivity of the chamber's supply ventilation:

  • For fans with a capacity of 18 thousand m3/hour, 175 kW burners are used;
  • For fans with a capacity of 24 thousand m3/hour - 240 kW.

Infrared drying is the priority choice for self-equipped painting booths. To create this system, it makes sense to use portable heating elements, which eliminates the need to install them in the walls of the box. Infrared lamp for within 10-50 thousand rubles, you will need them in the amount of 4-6 pieces. (with full body paint). In order to save money, a do-it-yourself infrared lamp can be created on the basis of household IR heaters UFO and their analogues.

Having set up a paint booth, you can do everything for the car with your own hands - repaint cars, do partial painting of the body, wheels, which in the future will bring considerable monetary profit.

Car painting is carried out in specially designed boxes. The operation of painting equipment is ensured by the installation of a system of filters, heat exchangers and exhaust hoods, which maintain the required air temperature and sufficient air circulation in the work space. The operating principle of such a device is based on the organization of supply and exhaust ventilation in the work area and consists of the following work cycles:

  • The first is cleaning the street air from dust and exhaust air from paint and varnish residues (after cleaning, it is again supplied to the box);
  • The second is painting the car (purified air from the environment comes inside and heats up to 20-40 degrees, and after painting it is thrown outside);
  • The third is drying the car (the air from the working space is cleaned, heated to 60-80 degrees and again supplied to the box).

Painting cars in a spray booth has several advantages. Thus, the tightness of the device prevents the entry of dust from the street, and objects that collect dust are absent from the work area. In addition, the design of the unit prevents unwanted air flows carrying dust and drafts from entering its space. Internal surfaces can be cleaned without much difficulty and no special equipment is required. You can place car painting equipment almost anywhere, for example, in a garage or basement. And in the absence of funds to purchase a painting booth, as well as in other situations, you can build a painting box yourself.

Having looked at sites dedicated to car painting, you can come across many interesting ideas and recommendations on how to make a paint booth with your own hands: photos of the main stages of the process, articles describing the sequence of work, ways to equip a room in a garage from scrap materials at minimal cost. A homemade device is constructed from a wooden frame or an aluminum profile frame covered with plastic, polyethylene and other materials. Equipment for organizing the camera must be purchased in specialized stores, having previously calculated the required parameters of devices and instruments. Equipment you will need is a fan, filters, lamps or luminaires, heating elements, etc.

There are several ways to understand how to build a paint booth with your own hands - video instructions posted on specialized websites, recommendations from craftsmen who independently built such a booth in the garage, etc.

Any painting booth consists of a working room, an air intake, an air outlet, filters, heating elements and a control panel for the main operating modes. In general, to build such a chamber, you must do the following:

  1. Choosing a room for its equipment;
  2. Choice of base;
  3. Wall decoration;
  4. Side and top lighting device;
  5. Organization of the ventilation system;
  6. Installation of floor and filter elements;
  7. Security.

A garage or other non-residential (maybe unheated) room can be used as a room. The base for installing the camera can be metal or concrete. Concrete - provides convenient entry of a car into the room, since it is located on the same level with the floor of the surrounding space. This ensures stable and complete air exchange in the room. The metal base is a finished product that is installed indoors. In this case, the floor level of the chamber will be located approximately 30-50 centimeters higher than the floor level of the surrounding rooms. To drive a car inside, you will need to additionally build a bridge.

The metal base for the spray booth provides such advantages of its operation as stable air exchange and tightness. It is recommended to cover the walls of the work area with plastic lining, which is durable, can withstand temperatures up to +50 degrees, does not burn and does not emit toxic substances.

Paint booth lighting

The lighting in the spray booth must be good. It is believed that the level of illumination in the working area of the room should be at least 600 lux, but usually illumination of 1-2 thousand lux is provided. Using only ceiling lamps is not sufficient, since the sides and other surfaces of the car will be poorly illuminated. To create sufficient illumination in the working area, it is recommended to install ceiling lamps and additional light sources on the walls of the chamber.

The following are used as light sources:

  • Fluorescent lamps;
  • LED lights.

Fluorescent lamps provide good illumination without glare and provide excellent color rendition. In addition, they are environmentally friendly, economical and vibration resistant. LED lamps have been used more frequently lately. And this is not hampered by the rather high cost (compared to fluorescent lamps), since their advantages are significant.

These include lower energy consumption (three times), safety, bright and even light without glare, durability and reliability of operation. In addition to arranging ceiling (or top) and side lighting in the spray booth, additional lighting may be required in some areas. To do this, it is convenient to use rotating lamps with a long stem. The most effective lighting scheme for a paint booth is the installation of long lamps arranged in a checkerboard pattern.

Filter system and ventilation

One of the most serious problems of a paint booth is the release of large amounts of solvent vapor and the accumulation of mist from fine paint particles. This has a negative impact on human health (respiratory organs, skin) and on the quality of surface painting. It is necessary to eliminate the described negative impacts, for which purpose a properly designed and organized ventilation and filter system is provided in the room.

Ventilation in the painting booth should be general supply and exhaust. The system also includes local hoods installed in areas such as paint baths, tables or stands. When calculating the performance of devices used in the ventilation system - fans, hoods, air ducts - it is necessary to take into account the air exchange capacity of the chamber (the amount of air passing in the room per hour).

Air exchange is usually carried out using air-suction and air-injection fans with different performance and power. The system can be configured as dual-engine or single-engine. The choice of design type depends on how much air circulation is required to ensure normal operation of the chamber. Its ventilation operates in several modes:

  • Purification of street air and its circulation in the working area before painting;
  • Air intake from the street, its filtration and heating to a temperature of +20-+30 degrees, as well as removal of paint mist through holes in the floor after painting;
  • Drying mode, in which the air from the chamber is filtered and heated to +60 degrees, after which it is fed back into the work area.

The air in the room is distributed with a uniform flow, and during the painting process, paint on the floor is prevented due to the construction of a lattice floor with filter elements on which paint particles and solvent vapors settle. Additionally, the ventilation system must have valves to regulate the air supply. It is recommended to install two-stage filters. They are located on the ceiling of the workroom and in the floor, and their area must be sufficient.

A simple and economical do-it-yourself paint booth, in terms of the complexity of the work performed, is built as follows. First, you need to select a room for its equipment and prepare the tools and materials necessary for the work: boards for the frame, plastic film for covering it, a measuring tape and marker, a stationery blade and tape, a wood saw and hammer, a scraper and nails of different sizes.

Next, you can draw a drawing and mark the boards using a tape measure and marker. Then the boards are cut with a saw according to the markings. From the resulting wooden blanks it is necessary to make four boards along the width of the chamber (180 cm) and four boards along the depth of the chamber (150 cm long). After this, twenty centimeters each need to be cut from four boards 220 cm long for the slats (chamber height).

Next, the frame of the paint booth is constructed from the prepared boards. The base is made of two boards 150 cm long and two boards 180 cm long. Then you need to install four vertical boards 200 cm long and build a ceiling on top of the vertical boards of the same design as the base. Thus, we have the frame of a homemade camera, which needs to be sheathed.

A more functional paint booth, in which you can obtain high-quality car painting, can be organized in the garage. To do this, the walls of the garage must be lined with plastic lining, LED lamps installed on the walls and ceiling. Next, an air intake, a heat gun, and additional heating elements should be installed under the ceiling.

Using air ducts, air is distributed from the heat gun to 6–8 heating elements (heating elements) located around the perimeter. The next stage of work is raising the floor and installing a grille, under which you can place floor filters, a fan-based hood and a heat generator (heating elements or burner). After this, it is necessary to make an entrance gate to the working area of the box. It is better to make the ventilation system external. To ensure the safety of homemade equipment, it is recommended to consider the following:

  1. Lighting devices, ventilation devices and other equipment of the spray booth must be explosion-proof;
  2. Heating elements must have a protective thermostat, and all electrical appliances must be grounded;
  3. The insulation for walls should be non-flammable (for example, mineral wool);
  4. It is recommended to install local exhaust devices in areas of increased accumulation of vapors and particles of paint and varnish materials;
  5. The ventilation system must be designed so that the so-called. "dead zones".

Experts recommend taking into account some important points when equipping your own spray booth. Thus, the walls of the working cabin must be made of non-combustible materials - metal corrugated sheets, plastic lining and mineral wool as a thermal insulation material. Typically, profiled steel sheets painted with fire-resistant paints are used to make boxes. The walls are sandwich panels with insulation inside. It is necessary to provide not only exit doors, but also additional sealed doors made of fire-resistant material and simply opening from the inside.

It is recommended to make the floor of the box lattice. It is also possible to install only two rows of gratings. The main condition for installing the floor of a painting booth is to ensure sufficient air circulation and exhaust when performing basic work. It is recommended to organize the lighting so that no glare or shadows are formed in the room and the illumination is at least 600 lux. To do this, you can use fluorescent lamps or LED lamps installed on the ceiling, on walls and in places where additional equipment is installed.

When installing your own painting equipment, it is recommended to pay special attention to ventilation, since for proper operation of the device and high-quality painting of products, it is necessary to constantly update the air in the workroom and its downward flow, which prevents paint mist from settling on the surfaces to be painted. Various types of fans are used in the ventilation system. Screw fans are economical and have good performance, but their use is acceptable when the length of the ventilation ducts is short.

Centrifugal fans create static pressure in the room, so it is necessary to use a suction and discharge fan inside. When they operate simultaneously, proper air exchange in the working space is ensured: the suction fan pulls air contaminated with paints and varnishes from the chamber, and the discharge fan takes air from the street and supplies it to the working space of the chamber.

So, you can make a paint booth for a car yourself. To do this, you will need a small garage in which a metal or concrete base is made, LED or fluorescent lamps, filters, fans and heat exchangers are installed to provide the working conditions required for high-quality painting.
