Danilo found out that his father-in-law is an evil sorcerer. He sentenced him to death, but Katerina, succumbing to the speeches of her old father, deceived her husband and released the criminal. Soon the sorcerer sends death to Danilo and his young son, and later kills his daughter, who has gone mad with grief. But evil could not go unpunished, and the old man is waiting for retribution for all deaths.
First of all, this is a work about the nature of human revenge, it was revenge that became the factor on which the whole plot of the story was strung. The author showed that not only intentionally inflicted evil is punishable, but also committed with a good purpose.

Katerina was hardly able to pacify both, and the fight stopped: the men shook hands in a sign of reconciliation.
The next morning, Katerina confesses that she dreamed that her father was engaged in witchcraft. As soon as it got dark, Danilo decided to visit the abandoned castle. The Cossack saw someone walking in the dark straight into the lair of the sorcerer. Deciding to follow him, Danilo climbs a tree. Through the window, he saw how in one of the rooms the old man turned into a sorcerer. The old man summoned the soul that fluttered out of the sleeping Katerina, and began to demand her love. But the soul opposed this, calling the father to repentance.
Danilo is stunned, and Katerina, who has learned about everything, renounces her father. Danilo put the sorcerer on chains and in a cage, he was expected to be executed for colluding with the Poles. But the magician managed to convince his daughter that if she let him go, he would go into the caves and start a righteous life, asking God for mercy. Katerina released her father, deceiving her husband for the first time in her life.
Danilo senses his approaching death and asks his wife to take care of their child. Indeed, the Poles soon ran up, began to burn houses and steal cattle. A battle begins in which Danila is mortally wounded. Katerina weeps over her husband's body. The sorcerer, who had a hand in the death of his son-in-law, floats to his ruins. He again tries to summon Katerina's soul, but instead of her he sees someone else's frightening face.
Katerina lives in Kyiv in the family of Yesaul Gorobets. The widow is frightened by dreams in which she is threatened to kill her son. Having calmed the frightened woman, everyone went to bed. At night, the son was found dead in the cradle. Katerina lost her mind: she danced madly, brandishing a dagger, and looked for her father to stab him.
Suddenly a stranger arrived, Danila's comrade. He found Katerina and began to talk with her about the deceased. During the conversation, Katerina suddenly became reasonable, it seemed that her mental illness had left her. The stranger said that Danila took from him a promise in the event of death to take Katerina under his care. The woman immediately recognized her father and rushed at him with a knife, but the old man snatched the dagger from her and killed his daughter.

He flees to the holy places of Kyiv and kills an old man there who refused to pray for him. Wherever the sorcerer goes, his path lies to the Carpathian mountains. The rider suddenly opens his eyes. He is laughing. The sorcerer dies instantly. He sees already dead that all the dead from Galich, the Carpathians and Kyiv stretched out their bony hands to him. The horseman threw them a sorcerer, and they sunk their teeth into him.
Gogol Nikolai Vasilievich ends the story with an old song. It tells about King Stepan, who fought with the Turks, as well as about the Cossack brothers Ivan and Peter. Ivan caught the Turkish pasha and shared the king's reward with his brother. Andrei Bely, a symbolist poet, at the beginning of the 20th century put forward the thesis that Katerina's father and the sorcerer are not identical. This became the starting point for subsequent observations on the poetics of this story. This story arose, like other works of Gogol from "Evenings", at the intersection of two traditions: national-Ukrainian and Western-romantic (mainly German). The author in it mixed with elements of modern narration the features folk tradition. In line with romanticism is found in the work of the author's personal attitude to what is happening.
At the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, the Symbolists discovered autobiography, which Gogol's works from "Evenings" and, in particular, "Terrible Revenge" have. V. V. A Cossack, Danilo Burulbash, with his young wife Katerina and a one-year-old son, come to the wedding of the son of Yesaul Gorobets. The celebration took place quite normally, but as soon as the father brought out the icons to bless the newlyweds, one of the guests suddenly turned into a monster and fled, frightened by the images.
After this incident, Katerina's father, who went missing many years ago, suddenly appears. Katerina begins to be tormented by nightmares that the sorcerer who escaped from the wedding is her father. In dreams, he asks his daughter to abandon her husband and love him. With his strange behavior, the father only confirms her fears: he does not eat or drink anything, except for some kind of liquid from a bottle that he carries with him. Because of this, the Cossacks also begin to suspect something is amiss.
At this time, ominous phenomena occur: at night, the dead began to rise from the graves in the old cemetery, the howl of which spoke of terrible torment.
There was a quarrel between Danil and the father-in-law, which led to a fight, but Katerina managed to reconcile her husband with her father. But Danilo still did not trust the strange father-in-law and decided to follow him. And not in vain. One night, the Cossack noticed that in an abandoned castle, which everyone was wary of, a light came on in one of the windows. He went to the castle and saw through the window how the sorcerer, turning into a monster, summoned Katerina's soul and demanded that she fall in love with him. But the soul was adamant.
Danilo grabbed his father-in-law and imprisoned him behind bars, reinforced by the prayers of the priest so that any witchcraft in this dungeon was powerless. However, the sorcerer, having played on his daughter's feelings and promising that he would be tonsured a monk, persuaded her to let him out. Danilo has no idea who freed the prisoner, and Katerina is experiencing strong feelings because of her act.
In the meantime, news came of the attack of the Poles on the farm. Danilo, overwhelmed by a premonition of imminent death, went into battle, ordering his wife to take care of her son.
Intuition did not deceive the Cossack. On the battlefield, Danilo suddenly noticed his father-in-law in the ranks of the enemy. Deciding to deal with the sorcerer, Danilo rushed to him, but the sorcerer killed his son-in-law with an accurate shot.
Katerina, having received news of her husband's death, began to have nightmares again. In her dreams, her father appeared to her demanding to become his wife. Unable to cope with grief from the loss of her husband and son, Katerina lost her mind: she loosened her braids, sang and danced half-naked in the middle of the street. Soon she secretly fled from the captain home, to the farm.
After some time, a man arrived at the farm. He said that he fought side by side with Danila and was his best friend. The man also said that Danilo, before his death, expressed his last will: he asked a friend to take his widow as his wife.
Then Katerina realized that this Cossack was not a friend of her late husband at all. She recognized the hated sorcerer and rushed at him with a knife. But he snatched the weapon from his daughter's hands and stabbed her, after which he fled from the farm.

When Ivan appeared before God after death, he asked for a terrible fate for Peter and his descendants: none of them would be happy, and the last of his brother's kind would become such a monster that the world had not seen. After death, his flesh will be gnawed by the ancestors for all eternity. Arriving at the farm, Danilo quarrels with his father-in-law, when he asks the young people in rude terms why they returned home so late. The quarrel reaches a boiling point, both Cossacks draw their sabers and a fight breaks out between them from minute to minute. Only thanks to the persuasion of Katerina, it is possible to prevent the duel.
The next day, the young Cossack is surprised by the behavior of his father-in-law at the table, he does not eat dumplings and pork. In the evening, Burulbash sees how in a dilapidated castle, standing on the other side of the river, a light comes on in one of the rooms. Tormented by curiosity, the young Cossack goes with a friend to find out what happened in the castle. They notice how the father-in-law is heading in the same direction.
Climbing a tree, he sees Danilo wonderful picture how the father-in-law turns into a sorcerer, which was recently seen at the wedding of acquaintances. With the help of a spell, he summons the spirit of Katerina, and he accuses the sorcerer of killing his mother. Shocked by what is happening, Burulbash hurries to his house to tell his wife about what happened, but it turns out that she saw it all in a dream at night. Danilo, making sure that his father-in-law is hanging around with evil spirits, orders him to be thrown into the basement, and the inevitable execution awaits the sorcerer.
The next day, kind-hearted Katerina, succumbing to her father's persuasion, releases him from prison and immediately faints herself from surging dizziness.

The sorcerer, noticing all this, in horror saddles his horse and rides to the Kyiv monk, persuading him to forgive his sins. The schemnik refuses, and then the murderer in impotent rage kills him. Driven by an irresistible force, the sorcerer's horse carries his master back to the Carpathian mountains.
