Emile Coué (French Émile Coué, February 26, 1857, Troyes - July 2, 1926, Nancy) was a French psychologist and pharmacist who developed a method of psychotherapy and personal growth based on self-hypnosis.

This method is based on a mantra-like regular repetition of simple phrases - such as, for example, this: “Every day I am getting better and better in every way.” Regularity of classes is an important condition treatment. After completing his studies in Paris, he opened a medical practice in Troyes, during which he discovered that the effectiveness of treatment is significantly influenced by the patient’s conviction in the healing properties of the medicine offered to him.

Coue believed that the main cause of any disease was the human imagination. Therefore, for recovery, he recommended daily repetition of formulas aimed at improving health. Coue argued that everyone who inspires himself: “I will achieve!” will definitely achieve. This and other formulas he proposed promoted the patient’s active participation in the psychotherapeutic process, although, of course, they could not completely replace medications.

Working as an apothecary in Troyes from 1882 to 1910, Coue quickly discovered what later became known as the placebo effect.

Coue noticed an increase in the effectiveness of the drug when its effectiveness was emphasized in the eyes of the patient. Such patients recovered much faster than those to whom he did not tell anything about the properties of the medicine. Thus began Coue's research into hypnosis and the power of imagination.

The first treatment method used by Coue was based on hypnosis. He discovered that a person could not be hypnotized against their will, and, more importantly, the effects of hypnosis diminished when the person returned to consciousness.

In 1910, he moved to Nancy and opened a psychotherapy clinic there, which he ran until his death.

In his work, he was guided by the views of I. Bernheim and P. Levy on the essence of suggestion.

He considered health disorders as a consequence of autosuggestion and incorrect imagination: this determines the features of his group passive-suggestive method, when patients are introduced into a hypnotic state in which they turn to each other with the words: “Day by day I am getting better and better.”

This method was heavily criticized by specialists, but was very popular among practitioners.

True joy is that joy that, even as it passes, leaves behind a pleasant memory and a good, joyful feeling. Stick to such joys and choose for yourself only those pleasures that do not later turn into a bad side - mental and physical torment. And then all life will gradually become joy.

Learn to see people around you who are even worse off than you are now. Learn to sympathize with them and instill in them faith and optimism. But don't humiliate them with pity. By feeling sorry for a person, you only strengthen him in his plight. It’s better to believe in him, that he will have the strength to get out of his misfortunes and illnesses. Learn to help such people to the best of your ability, but not to the detriment of yourself and your interests. When you help others without hurting yourself, you are also helping yourself.

Learn to behave as if everything is fine with you - no matter how things really are with you, what your health really is. What we think about ourselves is what we become - don't forget that! But don’t turn your behavior into window dressing, when you want to demonstrate to other people that everything is fine with you. Do this not for others, but for yourself, even alone. And very often behind these words we hide not our own inability to do this, but only our own reluctance and self-doubt. If it seems to you that something is beyond your strength, try not to think too much about whether you can do it or not, but rather try to start doing it without thinking. You will be surprised to discover that you can actually do a lot - much more than you thought. Do it, don’t say “I can’t”! And you will see what you can! By saying “I can’t,” we thus set a limit, a ceiling above which we cannot rise. And human possibilities are practically limitless. Just don't limit yourself. By starting to do “I can - I can’t” without thinking, we become stronger in spirit and body, as we expand our capabilities, master new horizons for ourselves, which makes us believe in ourselves and treat ourselves with respect.

Remember that neither success, nor defeat, nor illness, nor health arise from anywhere, they do not appear on their own. Man is created from what he did and what he thought about in the past. This is what our present is made of. And now, in the present, we are laying the seeds of our future. So the pharmacist accidentally discovered what was later called the “placebo effect.” He was able to prove the real power of self-hypnosis: a person was healed by the confidence that he would definitely get better.
