Venice Lagoon- this is a large bay, separated from the Adriatic Sea by a long sandbar, which holds back the winds and waves, so there are many islands here, and they are not washed away by the waves. The word "lagoon" is related to the word "lago", Italian for "island". Thus, both in meaning and in essence, the Gulf of Venice is. bay with islands. The lagoon is connected to the Adriatic Sea by three straits:
Porto di Lido;
Porto di Malamocco;
Porto di Chioggia.

The area of the Venetian Lagoon is 550 km². Of these, 80% are wattles or salt marshes, approximately 11% are navigable areas of the sea or canals, only 8% are land, i.e. islands.
There are more than 100 islands in this lagoon, the largest is Venice. The area of the island city is 5.17 km2. In outline it resembles a fish. This can be seen in the photo below.
The tail of this “fish” leaves a long narrow island to the south Lido, it is on this island that the prestigious Venetian film festivals are held.

Some other islands of the Venice Lagoon:

25 km north of Venice there is a city on several islands Chioggia(Chioggia), second capital of the Venetian Lagoon. This is an ancient city with centuries-old history. The famous Venetian playwright Carlo Goldoni (Italian: Carlo Goldoni, February 25, 1707 - February 6, 1793) set the action of his famous play in this city.

San Clemente. These days it's a luxury hotel.
Poveglia - an island with an area of only 0.75 km², one of the most terrible and tragic places on the planet. During the Roman Empire and the Middle Ages, plague patients were taken here to die. In 1922, a psychiatric hospital was opened on the island, where cruel experiments were carried out on patients. Over the centuries, tiny Poveglia has become a huge mass grave for more than 160 thousand people. They say that at night on the island you can hear the groans of the ghosts of people who died here in agony.

Venice- a unique city, it is all crossed by canals along which all cargo is transported. The largest is the Grand Canal, curved in the shape of the letter "S". The streets in the city are narrow and pedestrian. Cars are not used in Venice. The houses here are built right on the water, many of the houses have access to the water, and inside there is room for boats.
Venice is rich in attractions. First of all, this is the brilliant St. Mark's Square with St. Mark's Cathedral, the Doge's Palace, the bell tower of St. Mark and the library of St. Brand.
Palazzo Grimani is a magnificent three-tier palace built according to the design of Michele Sanmicheli.

An excerpt characterizing the Venetian Lagoon

- But you’re wrong! – the little girl overheard my thoughts again. - Sometimes they actually end up here very good people, and they pay very dearly for their mistakes... I really feel sorry for them...
– Do you really think that our missing boy ended up here too?! He certainly didn’t have time to do anything that bad. Do you hope to find him here?.. Do you think this is possible?
– Be careful!!! – Stella suddenly screamed wildly.
I was flattened on the ground like big frog, and I just had time to feel as if a huge, terribly stinking thing had fallen on me. mountain... Something was puffing, slurping and snorting, emitting a disgusting smell of rot and rotten meat. My stomach almost turned out - it’s good that we “walked” here only as entities, without physical bodies. Otherwise, I would probably get into the most unpleasant troubles.....
- Get out! Well, get out!!! - the frightened girl squealed.
But, unfortunately, this was easier said than done... The fetid carcass fell on me with all the terrible weight of its huge body and was already, apparently, ready to feast on my fresh vitality... And as luck would have it, I just couldn’t free myself from it, and panic was already starting to squeak treacherously in my soul, compressed by fear...
- Come on! – Stella shouted again. Then she suddenly hit the monster with some bright ray and screamed again: “Run!!!”
I felt that it became a little easier, and with all my might I energetically pushed the carcass hanging over me. Stella ran around and fearlessly hit the already weakening horror from all sides. I somehow got out, gasping for air out of habit, and was truly horrified by what I saw!.. Right in front of me lay a huge spiky carcass, all covered with some kind of sharply stinking mucus, with a huge, curved horn on a wide, warty head .
- Let's run! – Stella screamed again. – He’s still alive!..
It was as if the wind had blown me away... I didn’t remember at all where I was blown... But, I must say, it was carried very quickly.
“Well, you’re running...,” the little girl squeezed out, out of breath, barely pronouncing the words.
- Oh, please forgive me! – I exclaimed, ashamed. “You screamed so much that I ran away in fright, wherever my eyes were looking...
- Well, it’s okay, next time we’ll be more careful. – Stella calmed down.
This statement made my eyes pop out of my head!..
– Will there be a “next” time??? “I asked cautiously, hoping for a “no.”
- Well, of course! They live here! – the brave girl “reassured” me in a friendly manner.
– What are we doing here then?..
- We are saving someone, have you forgotten? – Stella was sincerely surprised.
And apparently, from all this horror, our “rescue expedition” completely slipped my mind. But I immediately tried to pull myself together as quickly as possible, so as not to show Stella that I was really, really scared.
“Don’t think so, after the first time my braids stood on end all day!” – the little girl said more cheerfully.
I just wanted to kiss her! Somehow, seeing that I was ashamed of my weakness, she managed to make me feel good again immediately.
“Do you really think that little Leah’s dad and brother could be here?..,” I asked her again, surprised from the bottom of my heart.

Venice Lagoon ( Laguna di Venezia) - a bay of the Adriatic Sea with an area of about 550 km².
80% of this area is occupied by salt marshes, 12% by deep water or channels, and only 8% by land (more than 100 islands)

Today we will visit Murano (1.17 km²), Burano (0.21 km²) and Lido (4 km²). We’ll also look at a few more islands from the outside.

If, while sailing on a vaporetto along the Venetian Lagoon, you look carefully around, you can notice a lot of interesting things.

For example this island. Island of the Dead San Michele. Why island of the dead? For a long time there was a monastery in this fortress, but in 1807, by order of Napoleon, a city cemetery was organized here. The island is divided into three parts: Catholic, Orthodox and Protestant cemeteries.

You can decide that Charon is transporting souls of the dead across the river Styx. But we are in Catholic Italy and this sculpture by the Moscow sculptor Grigry Frangular, author of the Arbat Okudzhava, bronze illustration " Divine Comedy"Dante.

You can also see these, very small, once inhabited, but now abandoned islands.

Islands. No many words are needed here. It is advisable to get to any of them in the morning (well, at least by 9 o’clock). Then you will find the amazing atmosphere of small Italian towns, amazing silence and enveloping tranquility.

O. San Giorgio (San Giorggio), This is a very small island, which is located directly opposite St. Mark's Square.

The Cathedral of San Giorgio Maggiore is located on the island. They say that the bell tower of this cathedral offers stunning views of Venice. Well... If you are in Venice, make sure of this for yourself and for me :)

O. Lido.
Lido di Venezia is the fourth largest island of the Venetian Lagoon.
The houses here are more modern, there are asphalt roads and motor transport.
Lido is the “home” of the Venice Film Festival and a beach holiday destination.
Let's go, look, relax!

The water is still cool and only a few dare to swim. This brave rescuer is basking in the sun in his jacket, but still very carefully watching what is happening on the water!

O. Murano.

This is perhaps the most famous island of the Venetian Lagoon. By decision of the city council back in 1291, all glass workshops were moved here in order to keep the secrets of the masters secret and to protect Venice from fires that could easily have started from the red-hot furnaces of glassblowers. The island is located just 3 kilometers from Piazza San Marco and is connected to it by Vaparetto routes No. 4.1 and 4.2.

A walk around the island will not take much time. Or rather, not like that. If you decide to walk around the entire island, you will probably spend the whole day here, but...
If you have one free day, take a walk and look, I’m sure observant people will find a lot of interesting things for themselves. If you don’t have this extra day, I think that spending a whole day in Murano is not too much good idea when planning a trip to Venice. I wouldn't call the island particularly outstanding. Yes, you can look at the work of the masters for about 20 minutes. Perhaps you can go to the glass museum, I didn’t go. Well, go through the unimaginable number of shops where they sell this very glass. If you are not ready to spend more than 100 euros on Murano glass, then buy what you like in the first large store and don’t waste your time. If you want to buy a truly exclusive item, then prepare at least 300 euros and I think that best option You won’t find anything like a store at a museum or factory. And again, don’t waste time going to all the stores.

And yet... There is no need for many words here! Let's go and have a look!

O. Burano.
I deliberately left it “for a snack”. This is my favorite island in the Venetian Lagoon!
It would be more correct to say that Burano is an island quarter of Venice. He gained worldwide fame thanks to his lace and colorful houses. They say that these houses began to be painted in different colors fishermen's wives so that when returning home their husbands could see their houses from afar.
Now the color of each house is strictly fixed and which house should be painted in what color is decided exclusively by the city council.

Let's go and enjoy!

This man collects garbage and takes it out on a cart like this to a boat waiting in certain places.

Carlo the parrot really likes to untie the laces on his owner's sneakers. The sneaker sits on its nose next to the cage and doesn’t fly away!

The girls probably feel like they’re in a fairy tale here!

Venetian Lagoon (Venice, Italy) - detailed description, location, reviews, photos and videos.

The word “lagoon” was originally used to refer to one specific place - Laguna di Venezia, and only later was it extended to any bays cut off from the sea by reefs or sand spits. And one more condition - the water area must be beautiful. However, until the 6th century AD. e. The Venetian lagoon was a huge salt marsh with islands overgrown with reeds. Its beauty is the result of the activities of people who fled here from the Hun invasion, drained the soil and made it suitable for habitation.

Origin of the lagoon

7000 years ago the glaciers melted, the water rose and flooded the shores of the future Adriatic Sea. The sand carried by the flow of the Brenta, Deze and Sila rivers formed a barrier, broken by only three narrow channels: Lido, Malamocca and Chioggia. Inside the enclosed space there are about 100 islands, washed by the tides every 12 hours.

Venetian archipelago

The historical center of Venice is located in an area riddled with hundreds of natural and man-made canals that act as city streets. The largest is the Grand Canal, beautiful palaces and cathedrals have been erected along its banks, and most of the attractions of the “Princess of the Adriatic” are concentrated in the surrounding area.

Nearby large islands have already become part of Greater Venice, but each is interesting in its own way. Murano is the kingdom of glassblowers, the secrets of their craft were protected as state secret, mirrors and lenses were worth their weight in gold. Burano was inhabited by lower-ranking artisans - lacemakers, tailors, glovers, shoemakers, the products of their hands are famous to this day highest quality. Between them stretches across the fairway of Sant'Erasmo, the largest island of the lagoon, a Venetian vegetable garden supplying its population with fresh vegetables and fruits.

There are many islands scattered in the Venice Lagoon - tiny, abandoned, flaunting the ruins of fishermen's houses or hospitals - with screaming, broken, dark windows and walls corroded by wind, water and salt. There are also larger islands, but most of them are in poor condition, just waiting for their fate to improve. You could probably talk about the lagoon and its islands for a long time and in several parts, which could tire an uninterested person. Therefore, today a few words about the most interesting (in my opinion) pieces of land protruding from the Venetian waters and swamps.

Murano and Torcello won't be here today. I already wrote about the mysterious one, since then its fate has changed - it was decided to build a luxury hotel in spite of eerie legends and traditions, which will invariably attract crowds of people wishing to the island, and millions of euros will flow into the treasury. Today we are talking about those islands where almost no one gets to, but their past, unlike the present, is of keen interest.

Santa Maria della Grazie. It rises near San Giorgio Maggiore - the active tourist center of Venice. Here was a real pilgrimage center, competently organized, conveniently planned and distinguished by the precision of its work. Among the employees there were people who knew different languages so that guest pilgrims do not have problems with explanation and understanding. The center brought Her Serene Highness good fees, and the pilgrims departing for the Holy Land were happy and satisfied, easily parting with money for the assistance provided in accommodation.
Over time, a monastery grew up on La Grazia, the main shrine of which was the sculpture of the Virgin Mary, made, according to legend, by the Apostle Paul himself. Then Napoleon came and turned the holy monastery into a gunpowder warehouse. One day, an accidentally lit match caused everything to fly up into the air, leaving a pile of stones instead of a monumental temple. There was nothing left on the long-suffering island, and a few years later an infectious diseases hospital was opened here, which ended the glorious and religious history of La Grazia with its unhealthy atmosphere.

San Clemente. This island is not so far from San Marco, but this did not prevent it from always being in the shadows and obscurity. Once upon a time there was a monastery on it, and its main church until recently was safe and sound - in it and utility rooms They set up a madhouse.
An interesting story also happened during the Second World War. Two Venetians, called up for military service, escaped from army authorities and hid in a dilapidated boat repair shop on San Clemente. Friends and parents periodically brought necessary things and food, which helped the children live on the island for several years and remain undetected until the very end of the war. And then return to the city to their families and live happily ever after, perhaps even with slight remorse :)

San Sevrolo. Few Venetian islands escaped the fate of hospitals, insane asylums, infirmaries or prisons. San Servolo is no exception either. In the 18th century, it opened its doors to the insane, but not the simple ones - but the very noble and rich. Patients came here only at the direction of the Council of Ten, which could quietly get rid of noble, but unwanted people of high position. Shelley called San Servolo the most famous madhouse on earth, the existence of which was interrupted by Napoleon Bonaparte.
The Benedictine monks are also associated with the island, who founded their monastery here, in which one also took place historical event. The Emperor of the Western Roman Empire, Otto III, arrived there incognito to collect information about the growing power of the Venetian Republic, and at the same time to be curious. Of course, he had political motives, and big picture he undoubtedly wanted to have about Venice. So, carefully wrapped in black, Doge Piero Orseolo II himself met him in the monastery and gave him all the information Otto needed, which surprised the emperor.
