During the construction and insulation of buildings, it is important to ensure high-quality wind, steam and waterproofing. A membrane will provide reliable protection from the negative impact of environmental factors, which will extend the life of the insulation, preventing its premature destruction. Among other things, using this material it is possible to increase the thermal insulation properties, which will guarantee an extension of the life of the main parts of the building. A wind- and moisture-proof membrane can guarantee durability by retaining heat inside buildings.
“Izospan” is a vapor-permeable membrane that is actively used in construction to protect the thermal insulation layer, roofing, as well as walls and other structural elements that need to be protected from the influence of moisture and wind. A specialized film ensures the removal of water vapor from the thermal insulation. When laying material from the outside, it is necessary to use a technique that involves installing sheets under wall cladding and roofing. In the manufacturing process of the material, modern polymers are used, which have many advantages, including: environmental friendliness, ease of installation, high mechanical strength, long service life, and unsurpassed resistance to chemicals. The wind- and moisture-proof membrane makes the installation process easier for the craftsman; the material is characterized by high mechanical strength, which simplifies installation. It is not capable of releasing substances that would be harmful to the environment or human health. As practice shows, the material retains its performance qualities for a long time, which ensures a long service life. The membrane is quite resistant to the effects of other building mixtures.
The wind and waterproof membrane has a wide range of uses. This film can be used when insulating individual parts of the roof, as well as when arranging walls with external thermal insulation. The material is actively used to protect ventilated facades, as well as as a waterproofing layer in the construction of insulated roofs, the slope of which is more than 35 degrees. This wind and moisture protective membrane can be used for roofs that have different coatings, such as profiled sheets, tiles, metal tiles, and bitumen tiles.
If the membrane is part of the roof structure, then it is laid under the sheathing, and there should be a layer of thermal insulation underneath. This way there will be rafters underneath. The material is able to protect the structure from the wind, while the load-bearing elements will be reliably protected from the formation of condensation.
A wind- and moisture-proof membrane for walls is indispensable when constructing buildings with external insulation. At the same time, the material will protect the structure from the effects of precipitation and the external environment. When insulating walls, the membrane is lined under the sheathing on the outside of the insulating layer. Today, the described material is often used as a protective layer of thermal insulation during the construction of a ventilated facade. In this case, we can talk about multi-story buildings.
The high demand for the described wind protection has led to the need to manufacture these membranes of various types. Each of them has certain characteristics. For example, the wind and moisture protective membrane “Izospan A” is intended to protect floors, roofs and walls from the formation of condensation. The main feature of this film is the ability to evaporate moisture from the inner layer of the roof structure without harming the thermal insulation. On sale you can find “Izospan”, which belongs to the AM category. It is a two-layer material that protects the thermal insulation coating from moisture and weathering. “Izospan AS” is a three-layer material that protects thermal insulation from external atmospheric influences, which can also include moisture evaporation. “Izospan”, which is marked with the letter B, creates a protective barrier against internal fumes. But the Izospan S membrane is used for additional protection of uninsulated roofs. It can be used when arranging floor coverings in rooms where conditions are characterized by high humidity. “Izospan D” is a dense fabric made of polypropylene and covered with a waterproof film. The material is able to withstand high temperatures. Under the DM marking, a membrane is produced, supplemented with an anti-condensation layer, which makes it a universal vapor barrier. If you see “Izospan”, which is labeled FB, then you can use this material in the construction of saunas and baths. The layer will be able to reflect infrared radiation.
If you are thinking about the question of how to properly install a wind and moisture protective membrane, then the information presented below should help you. To carry out installation work, you will need the film itself, a stapler, adhesive tape, wooden slats, as well as a set of construction tools. Thermal insulation is installed on the treated surface, which is placed between the joists or in the sheathing. A membrane is placed on top of the insulation, with its smooth side facing down. Laying is carried out from top to bottom, horizontally. Installation work does not include sagging of the film; it must be stretched. The membrane is fastened using a stapler, and the distance between the fasteners should be approximately 40 centimeters. Adjacent sheets are laid with an overlap of 15 centimeters, and the joints should be taped. Wooden slats are attached to the joists on top of the film, which allows for a ventilation gap between the next layer and the membrane. Next, it is necessary to carry out finishing work.
If you decide to purchase Izospan, the price of this material should interest you. When it comes to marking with the letter A, then for 1 square meter of such material you will have to pay 22 rubles, while a roll contains 70 square meters. It is made of 100% polypropylene, and the dimensions of one roll are 1.6 x 43.75 meters. Some experts are concerned about the question of what the breaking load is. For this material, the mentioned characteristics are 139 and 190 N/5cm, respectively. Stability to ultraviolet rays is maintained for 4 months, but the water resistance is 330 mm. water Art. The operating temperature varies from -60 to +80 degrees. If you use this material for construction work, then you should also be interested in vapor permeability, which is 3500 grams per cubic meter during the day.
Izospan brand membrane is available for sale in a wide range; the price of this material may vary depending on the purpose. If you have material marked AM in front of you, then you will have to pay 31 rubles for 1 square meter. But the AS membrane is even more expensive, its price is 48 rubles. per square meter.
If you choose a wind and moisture protective membrane, the technical characteristics of which were presented above, then you can count on the fact that the material will protect the thermal insulation from exposure to dampness and moisture during operation. With its help you can retain heat and also save on heating costs.
Building a house is a responsible process, so every developer makes sure that construction technology is not violated. After all, the durability of the future home and its comfort depend on this.
Currently, many materials have appeared for the outer cladding of a house, making it possible to protect the main supporting structures from adverse atmospheric influences. Their appearance made it possible to insulate houses from the outside using slab or roll insulating materials based on mineral wool.
But, as you know, the worst enemy of any insulation is moisture penetrating into it, which significantly reduces the thermal insulation characteristics of the material. Therefore, the insulation needs to be protected, not only from possible atmospheric influences, but also from moisture penetrating from inside the house. For these needs, special roll materials are used - vapor and wind insulation.
The vapor barrier is mounted directly on the wall of the building, prior to the installation of thermal insulation. And the wind protection should be tightly adjacent to the surface of the insulation from the outside.
Wind protection is used when it is planned to install a ventilated façade using external insulation.
Do not think that only new buildings are insulated in this way. This option can also be used to insulate an old building if necessary.
Moreover, this method is successfully used for insulating not only frame and wooden houses - it is suitable for concrete and brick walls.
Windproof films are also used to protect floors, ceilings, and roofs. The only condition is to use them only on the “cold” side: directly under the roofing, subfloor or on the street side of the external walls.
The main condition for the functionality of wind protection is its correct installation. The technology itself is simple.
It would seem that using wind protection only has a positive effect. But its use has disadvantages that you also need to be aware of.
But there are also disadvantages, which mainly arise due to improper execution of work and errors in the design of a ventilated facade.
Despite criticism of windproof films and membranes, they are in demand among the population and the construction industry. Therefore, manufacturers tried to eliminate the shortcomings and released materials with new properties to the market.
Nowadays there are quite a lot of windproof materials on sale with low flammability and even completely non-flammable: non-flammable windproof membrane DELTA®-FAS NG; “Izospan AF”, “Izospan AF+” and others.
So if you want to improve the fire safety of your home, it is worth spending money on more expensive, but also more reliable materials.
A completely new product was Izoplat slabs, which are sheets of heat-insulating material with wind protection, sound insulation and insulation properties. They are made from softwood fibers without the use of any adhesive, so they are absolutely harmless.
Plates differ favorably from films in that they have stable geometric dimensions that do not change over time. Therefore, once correctly installed, they will serve for a long time: cold bridges do not form between them, they cannot be torn by the wind or destroyed by the touch of a sharp object. In this case, a slab with a thickness of 25 mm in terms of thermal insulation corresponds to a wooden wall with a thickness of 90 mm. The material is perfect for use in cold and humid climates.
When planning the construction of a frame house, where the comfort of living in it depends entirely on the insulation, it is worth making sure that it is reliably protected from any adverse influences that destroy its structure and reduce its thermal protection characteristics. Therefore, for wind protection, it is better to choose high-quality materials that are guaranteed to be worth the money spent.
Roof waterproofing is one of the main stages in the construction of buildings. At the same time, not only the operational properties of the roof, but also the general condition of the structure depend on the quality of the materials used, as well as the technology used. At the moment, the best protection and tightness of the structure is provided by innovative building materials - membranes.
The membrane is a film roofing material consisting of polymers, which can be based on thermoplastic olefins, synthetic rubber or plasticized polyvinyl chloride. However, it is impossible to name the exact components, since each manufacturer uses its own specific components. Fiberglass, modified bitumen, various plasticizers, etc. are added to the material.
In addition, this is the most modern type of coating, the prevalence of which is due not only to its excellent technological characteristics, but also to its long service life. Thanks to excellent adhesion, excellent waterproofing properties, resistance to moisture and high strength, the material can be widely used in individual construction.
Modern membranes are highly resistant to moisture, durable and able to withstand sudden temperature changes.
If a membrane is intended to be used for roof installation, then before carrying out work it is necessary to study the types of this material depending on its composition and purpose.
In the production of roofing membranes, several types of polymers and binding elements are used. The result is coatings with different properties, each of which has its own advantages and disadvantages.
The EPDM membrane is the first polymer material that has remained popular for half a century. It may be based on a rubber sheet or polymerized special components. To make the membrane stronger, a polyester-based reinforcing mesh is used. In turn, the ether fiber gives the membrane resistance to various mechanical influences. The advantages of such a membrane include:
The main disadvantage of EPDM membranes is the seams, which are connected to each other using glue, which makes the material less durable and reliable compared to products where joints are provided by welding.
The moisture-proof EPDM membrane is an inexpensive, durable coating that is laid in a joint with gluing of the joints of the sheets
In the 1990s, the TPO membrane was developed in the USA, which today is the most airtight material among all similar products. This membrane is produced based on olefins that are resistant to high temperatures. Then it is reinforced with fiberglass or polyester, but there are models without reinforcement. The combination of polypropylene with rubber gave the material the characteristics of plastic and rubber, which had the best effect on its compatibility with any other bitumen coatings. Among the main advantages of TPO membranes are the following:
The disadvantages of the membrane are low elasticity, especially when compared with EPDM and PVC materials, as well as the need for frequent repairs and timely maintenance.
TPO membranes have high levels of tightness and strength, but are often deformed and require periodic maintenance
PVC membranes are very popular due to their low price and ease of installation, but they are not compatible with all materials and are susceptible to exposure to chemically active substances
Flexible membranes can be used to create different layers of roofing pie on all types of roofing structures.
A vapor barrier membrane is a polymer film that is designed to protect the roofing pie from warm, humid air escaping from living spaces. Thanks to this material, the service life of any structure is extended. The vapor barrier membrane is made of polyethylene of different densities.
It contains antioxidants and other components that increase the technical and operational properties of the coating. The thickness of the material is generally from 0.5 to 3 mm. The material is effectively used for both internal and external roof installations.
Among the advantages of vapor barrier membranes are:
The disadvantages of the product include low resistance to mechanical damage. In other words, the material can be pierced, cut, etc.
The vapor barrier membrane provides a simple and inexpensive coating to protect roof insulation from becoming wet due to condensation of moist vapors escaping from living spaces.
The main argument in favor of using a “breathable” membrane is the absence of the need for a counter-lattice
The polymer membrane is a new material that is used for the construction of soft roofs. It is made from sufficiently elastic high-quality polyvinyl chloride, which ensures excellent reliability, quality of roofing, consistency of technological properties, as well as a long service life.
When laying a polymer membrane in one layer, a much more durable coating is obtained than when using several layers of rolled products. All seams are sealed with hot air using special equipment, which ensures a high level of water resistance for a long time.
Among the characteristics that distinguish a polymer membrane are:
Disadvantages of a polymer membrane:
The properties of the superdiffusion membrane resemble skin. It is able to protect not only the insulation, but also the internal parts of the building structure from external moisture, allowing the steam escaping from the under-roof space to pass out.
Similar membrane technologies are used in clothing. Down jackets and shoes prevent a person from getting wet and sweating, which means they remain warm and dry in any weather.
The product can be made from 2–4 layers of polypropylene, which gives the membrane increased strength while maintaining its ability to stretch and flexibility. The inner layer provides diffusion characteristics, and the outer layer provides wind, moisture and dust protection properties, as well as UV stabilization.
The superdiffusion membrane does not require gaps; it can be attached directly to the insulation. In addition, the material does not require a counter-lattice over the rafter system. All these properties greatly reduce the cost of insulating the building and installing the roof, allowing you to save space during the construction of the roof and walls.
The superdiffusion membrane can be laid directly on the insulation without creating a ventilation gap
The superdiffusion membrane has the following advantages:
Disadvantages of the superdiffusion membrane:
A superdiffusion membrane is not used if the roof is covered with metal tiles without the use of acrylic coating, seam metal material, or Euro slate. These materials can become very hot and form a lot of condensation during sudden temperature changes, which only an anti-condensation membrane can cope with.
The anti-condensation membrane is a coating made of polypropylene material and waterproof coating. This combination of components contributes not only to the absorption of steam, but also to its removal beyond the boundaries of the roofing material. The membrane traps condensation that forms on the inside of the roof, protecting the supporting structure of the building. After installation, the pile retains condensate with a mass much larger than its own.
The main area of use of the anti-condensation membrane is pitched metal roofs (metal tiles). It is these coatings that need good protection from moisture. Due to violations of technology, the use of low-quality materials, as well as exposure to temperature changes, microscopic cracks may appear on the metal, which become centers of corrosion when water enters. The use of an anti-condensation membrane will eliminate such problems, since the absorbent layer of the material is able to quickly absorb not only condensation, but also steam.
The anti-condensation membrane protects against large amounts of moisture that forms on metal roofing coverings during the cold season
The anti-condensation membrane is not perforated and therefore is not a “breathable” material.
Advantages of the anti-condensation membrane:
The disadvantages of the material include the following factors:
It is necessary to select the optimal membrane based on the architectural and design features of the structure, as well as climatic conditions.
Today, the building materials market is replete with membranes from different manufacturers. However, the most famous products are from several companies.
The TechnoNikol membrane is a progressive innovative product with excellent waterproofing characteristics. Such materials provide excellent protection to the structure and differ from other analogues in a number of advantages:
The structure of the TechnoNikol membrane has three layers that bring safety and flexibility to the material.
The company's product line includes membranes from 1.2 to 2 mm thick.
The TechnoNikol membrane has high vapor and waterproofing characteristics and can be used on all types of roofs
The Rockwool membrane is a wind-, hydro- and vapor-permeable material that consists of two layers. The coating perfectly allows steam to pass through, which comes from inside the building, and protects the insulation from the negative effects of moisture. The membrane retains its tightness even in cases where the water pressure rises to 2 atmospheres and is maintained throughout the day.
It is used to protect the insulation, as well as the building structure, from the penetration of moisture and wind. Rockwool products are used in the construction of a variety of pitched roofs. The membrane is produced in rolls with an area of 70 m2 (length 43.75 m, width 1.6 m). Main advantages of the material:
And the affordable cost of Rockwool material makes its use even more enjoyable.
For vapor and waterproofing of the roof, you can use a Rockwool brand membrane
Decker roofing membrane is manufactured in Germany. It has excellent vapor permeability and density. It is used as waterproofing for the installation of cold attic spaces and insulated roofs.
The Decker membrane is a three-layer product made using modern ULTRASONIC layer molecular bonding technology. This technology gives excellent results, namely an increase in the thickness, strength and diffusion characteristics of the membrane.
The bottom layer of the membrane not only has anti-condensation properties, but also protects it from ruptures and all kinds of damage during installation. The warranty period is more than half a century. Decker brand products are marked with special markings that help with installation of the material, and the logo printed throughout the product guarantees originality and high quality for the consumer.
The high-quality Decker membrane has markings throughout the entire membrane, making installation much easier
“Tefond Plus” is a dense cellular membrane on which special locks and insulating seams are located. They make laying the material easier. Tefond Plus products are widely used because they can provide excellent roof protection using glued and bitumen waterproofing. The membrane is not destroyed by chemicals or large accumulations of water.
In addition, the material has high strength, so there is no risk of it breaking during installation. Such a membrane can perform the function of drainage, removing water into special wells. The wear resistance and strength of the Tefond Plus film increase the service life of the roof to 50 years. By using the material on horizontal planes, you can be sure that the load on the base will be distributed evenly, which means that the roof will be reliably protected from negative influences for a long time.
When using the Tefond Plus membrane, the service life of the roof increases to 50 years
The Logicroof membrane consists of 3 layers of film. At the same time, it contains a variety of stabilizing components and expensive high-class additives that minimize the threat of fire, which is confirmed by certificates and multiple tests of the material for fire safety. And thanks to the use of modern and unique technology, the surface of the material is covered with a layer containing an increased concentration of substances that protect against ultraviolet rays. The result is excellent resistance of the membrane to sunlight and a significant increase in service life.
All types of Logicroof membranes have common advantages:
Thanks to these numerous properties, the Logicroof membrane can be used in any facility, including even power plants. The manufacturer offers the following types of membranes:
In addition, when talking about the production of Logicroof membranes, it is impossible not to remember extrusion. This production method provides for the absence of voids in the products, high homogeneity of the composition, as well as excellent flexibility and elasticity characteristics. One of the main points that directly affects the cost and quality of the material is the use of the best European raw materials, which undergo strict control. This is why using Logicroof membranes makes financial sense.
The Logicroof membrane is made from the best European raw materials and has unique characteristics of strength, elasticity and fire safety
Necessary materials and tools for installing the membrane:
Sequence of work on laying the roofing membrane:
First, a layer of geotextile fabric is stretched, then insulation boards are installed, and a membrane is spread on top
Despite the fact that roofing membrane is a fairly expensive material, it justifies its high cost by its aesthetic appeal, durability and reliability.
Roll vapor-waterproofing systems are widely used in the construction of buildings. For example, let’s consider the system of a domestic manufacturer of materials under the Izospan brand.
Izospan is precisely a system of materials, the complex use of various grades of which solves all problems with hydro- and vapor barrier of floors, roofs and walls that arise during the construction of buildings and structures.
Each individual roll of material of any brand of the Izospan system has detailed instructions for use and clear installation diagrams.
The materials of the Izospan system have a price one and a half to two times lower than that of imported analogues (Tyvek, Yutafol).
Technical characteristics of membranes and films used in building structures for water vapor barrier and wind protection.
Vapor-permeable membranes are used to protect against condensation, wind, drops of moisture, snow (blown under the roof or sheathing) in roof structures, ceilings and walls.
The membrane does not allow moisture from the external environment to penetrate into the building structure. At the same time, the membrane is permeable to water vapor, which allows moisture to be removed from membrane-protected structures.
Paro about fixed membranes They are always installed on the outer side of the insulation, external to the heated room.
Izospan A and Izospan A with OZD - is a microperforated polypropylene film, one side of which has a water-repellent smooth surface.
The inner side has a rough anti-condensation structure, designed to retain condensate with subsequent evaporation of its droplets in the air flow. The water resistance of the material is maintained provided that the film does not touch any other surfaces.
Izospan A is used in roofs with roof slope angles greater than 35°. When installing a roof using an Izospan A membrane, it is necessary to provide a ventilated gap on both sides of the membrane. The stretched film should not touch other surfaces.
The need to create additional ventilation ducts, which increases the cost of the design, is a disadvantage of this material. During installation in roof structures, the film does not protect the underlying surfaces from precipitation.
Izospan A with OZD is isospan A with fire retardant additives. Used to cover mineral wool insulation of walls with ventilated facades as a vapor-permeable wind barrier. Installation of the material is carried out directly on the insulation, without a gap. With this installation, the water resistance of the film sharply decreases, which in this case is quite acceptable.
Izospan A is produced in rolls with a width of 1.4 or 1.6 m, in a roll of 35 or 70 m2. The price of a roll of Izospan A 70m2 is 1500 rubles. A roll of Izospan A with OZD costs 1,700 rubles. (approximately as of September 2012)
Izospan AM And Izospan AS— diffusion three-layer vapor-permeable membranes.
The Izospan AM (AS) membrane protects roofing or facade structures not only from atmospheric moisture and condensation, but also from wind. The Izospan AM (AS) membrane has better water resistance characteristics than Izospan A.
Among the most important advantages of diffusion membranes of this type is the possibility of laying them directly on top of the heat-insulating layer, without a ventilation gap between the membrane and this layer. Creating such a gap, as is known, requires additional time, money and materials, and the presence of a diffusion membrane eliminates this need. This makes it possible to reduce the cost of the entire structure, as well as simplify and speed up its installation.
Installation of the Izospan AM (AS) material can be carried out in any weather on wall and roof structures of various types - such as pitched roofs and attics, frame walls, walls with external thermal insulation and ventilated facade systems. At the same time, the diffusion membrane is not an independent roofing material and its use for the manufacture of temporary roofing is prohibited.
The diffusion membrane Izospan AM (AS) functions normally at temperatures from -60 to +80 degrees and can serve for 50 years or more without losing its functional qualities.
The width of the Izospan AM material is 1.6 m, per roll 35 or 70 m2. The price of a 70m2 roll is 2000 rubles. (approximately as of September 2012)
The width of the Izospan AS material is 1.6 m, 70 m2 per roll. The price of a roll is 3000 rubles. (approximately as of September 2012)
