DIY electric auger snow blower. Do-it-yourself snowblower: step-by-step instructions. Operating principle of auger snow blower

Such garden equipment, designed for cleaning snow flows, is currently available on the market in a huge assortment. There are snow blowers designed to work with packed or compacted snow, and there are also options that are more suitable for cleaning freshly fallen snow. They can be used for ordinary household needs such as cleaning the roof, paths, and so on. But today, the snow blowers presented in stores have a high price, so it is better to make one yourself from materials that any summer resident can find in his garage.

The easiest way to have a beautiful front lawn

Of course you saw perfect lawn in the cinema, on the alley, and perhaps on the neighbor’s lawn. Those who have ever tried to grow a green area on their site will no doubt say that it is a huge amount of work. The lawn requires careful planting, care, fertilization, and watering. However, only inexperienced gardeners think this way; professionals have long known about the innovative product - liquid lawn AquaGrazz.

Let's look at the main types of snow blowers:

Electric snow blower

It is mainly used for work in small areas, for example, near the porch of a house. Such electric version cannot be used to clear large volumes of snow. They are best used for suburban areas, and their use should be limited. Garden equipment is easy to use, simple to operate, convenient to store, and its price is affordable. In addition, such garden equipment has a power source that does not work very effectively when there is ice or large snowdrifts.

Gasoline snow blowers

In many cases, gasoline snow blowers are something like self-propelled vehicles, that is, they can move on their own without outside help. They have good cross-country ability and a huge range of snowdrift emissions. Thanks to the wide bucket, the cleaning period is significantly reduced. They can be used to work with snow cover of any thickness. Such gardening equipment does not require any special physical effort when used. Gasoline self-propelled snow blowers can work over vast areas and with huge volumes of snow. The technology has various options to make it more comfortable for the operator. The noted advantages are offset by a higher price and huge dimensions.

Non-self-propelled snow blower

A non-self-propelled snow blower is best used for cleaning small areas covered with a thin layer of fallen snow. It is also used for daily cleaning of sidewalks, paved paths or flat roofs structures. They don't move on their own. You need to push the equipment a little, then it moves forward independently using the captured snow.

Homemade snow blower

Such garden equipment for cleaning snowdrifts has a small weight and dimensions, which makes it possible to use it in narrow areas. It has a rubber-coated auger, which allows it to work in areas where a delicate approach is needed. Garden equipment works quietly and has a low price.

Self-propelled snow blower

This model of garden equipment has wheels or tracks. The downside is the high price. The technology only has Gas engine.

The process of making a homemade snow blower

Before we start making such necessary equipment for the garden as a homemade snow blower, let’s find out which option is better to do in our case.

Affordable non-cleaner

A homemade snow blower can be:

  • screw;
  • rotary.

Of course, the screw version is more convenient, however, the second model is universal - it can be used on any type of surface and volume of work.

Let's look at how to make a homemade rotary snow blower.

The design of such garden equipment has a grip width of about 48 centimeters, which is quite effective for clearing large areas of garden paths from snowdrifts. At the same time, this snow blower is easy to operate.

The manufacturing process must begin with the preparation of the drawing; the work itself consists of the following stages:

  1. The auger body of the snow blower is made from roofing iron.
  2. For the sidewalls we take 10 mm strips of metal. For the frame, metal corners with dimensions of 48 by 48 mm are useful.
  3. You can make your own handle from half-inch pipes.
  4. The auger shaft can be made with your own hands from a 3/4 pipe. In the middle of the pipe, you make a through cut with your own hands, into which a metal plate with dimensions of 110 by 260 mm is inserted. While the shaft rotates, this blade will begin to throw away snow flows. The snow is directed to the blades by an auger made of conveyor belts. 4 rubber rings are attached to special plates.
  5. You can put the bearings on the pipes; if the inner part of the bearings is smaller than the size of the outer pipes, then the pipes can be turned a little. As shown in the drawings below, a homemade adapter is made for the bearings.
  6. In order to make a homemade auger, you can buy about a one and a half meter conveyor belt, about 10 mm thick, then cut 4 rings from it, with a diameter of about 26 centimeters. It can be cut using 2 screws, which we screw into the board using a jigsaw.

The screws will rotate in bearings that themselves move.

Universal snow blower

Please note: you need to choose a sealed bearing that should not be exposed to snow.

  1. The auger drive can be attached to the walk-behind tractor using a chain or belt if you intend to use the engine from the walk-behind tractor on which the pulley is installed. All the necessary parts, such as belts, can be purchased at automobile stores. The purity of rotation of the augers at idle speed is about 780 rpm
  2. If ice gets into the auger part of the device, it will be necessary to make safety pins that are cut off when the augers jam. And when using belt drives, it will serve as additional fuses by slipping the belt.
  3. The width of the housing is about two centimeters larger than the screws, so that such screws do not touch the housing and, moreover, the space between the housings and the screws should be small.
  4. To move the engine from such garden equipment to another device in almost a couple of minutes without using any tools, the engine mount is made quick-release. In addition, when the snow blower engine is removed, you can simply clear the snow and put it in the shed without having to exert much effort, because the underlying mass in the snow blower is the weight of the engine.
  5. The bases for skis are wooden blocks. You need to attach plastic covers to them; electrical wiring boxes can be used as such material.

An important point: this is also the snow blower attachment of the trimmer. Trimmers protect it.

With the onset of winter, snow begins to fall. For many owners of private plots, clearing snow is a big problem. When working with a shovel, you can spend a lot of effort and time, and the result will still not be ideal.

To help people snow blowers were created(see how to choose). However, their price is often too high for people. Therefore, the question arises: how to make a snow blower with an electric motor with your own hands?

Design and principle of operation

Compact household snow blowers Available in petrol and electric. They differ from each other only in the way they are powered: the first ones run on gasoline, the second ones, respectively, on electricity. Read about electric snow blowers.

The essence of the work of a snow blower is as follows: using a specially rotating device, collect snow, and then, using an outlet chute, forcefully push it in a given direction to the required distance.

Based on this, snow removal machines divided into single-stage and two-stage. The former use only the force created by the auger to push out snow, rotating at high speed. The design of the latter includes a special rotor, which stands at the entrance of the outlet chute and, rotating, pushes out the snow.

This allows the auger to spin at a lower speed, which prevents rapid wear and tear. frequent breakdowns when hit by stones or other hard objects.

An auger is a device that crushes snow and “throws” it inside the snow blower.. It is located in the front of the machine, at the bottom and is closed at the top and sides with a bucket body so that the snow is directed directly into the snow blower. The screw is usually made of metal.

It represents a durable monolithic device, which looks like a larger version of a drill rig or screw thread. Rotating around its axis, it grinds the snow and feeds it inside the snow blower.

If the rotation speed is high (as in single-stage types), then a solid object entering the auger with high probability will cause it to break. Therefore, in such cars it is covered with rubber on top (sometimes it consists entirely of rubber).

This feature allows when in contact with hard ground the snow blower can move around a little on its own. In two-stage machines, the auger rotates at a lower speed, since it is not the one that throws the snow onto the long distances, and the rotor.

Such snow blowers can not only clear fresh snow, but also cope with compacted and frozen snowdrifts. The surface of a metal screw can be either smooth or serrated.

In addition, the snow blower has a motor, an outlet chute, which regulates the direction and range of snow throwing, wheels (sometimes tracks are used), handles for moving the snow blower by a person and, in the most complex models, a control panel.

More details about email. snow blower, watch the video below:

Step 2. Auger

The main working part of a snow blower is the auger. He consists of a drive shaft and “cutting” rings attached to it. The shaft is usually made from ¾ inch pipe. Its length should correspond to the length of the bucket. Trunnions are welded to its ends, which will later serve to install the shaft into bearings.

In the case of two-stage snow blowers, a metal plate (usually 12 cm by 27 cm) is attached to the center of the pipe. She transfers the snow into the discharge chute. On the sides of it, rings are attached to the pipe, which are usually made of a 10 mm thick conveyor belt.

They can also be cut from two-millimeter sheet steel.

Often they make four rings of a certain diameter. The diameter depends on the size of the bucket and shaft. The rings are sawn in half and bent into a spiral.

They are then welded to the shaft in the form of a continuous spiral. If the machine is auger-rotor, then to the sides from the central plate.

It turns out two solid spirals - to the right and left of the plate.
In two-stage electric snow blowers, the spiral must angle toward the center so that when the snow is raked, it falls onto the plate and then into the discharge chute.

Step 3. Ladle

To make the ladle itself, use roofing iron. It should cover the auger on three sides, but top part will protrude slightly forward.

The side parts can be made of plywood with a thickness of ten millimeters. Self-aligning bearings are installed in the side parts (for example: sealed bearings 205). A shaft with a screw is built into them.
Bearings must be reliably protected from snow and water.

The distance from the edges of the auger spiral and inner surface the ladle should be approximately 2 cm. The auger should not cling to the ladle. A hole is cut in the top of the bucket for the outlet chute. To make it, you can use a piece of ordinary sewer pipe diameters 15 cm.

However, the diameter can be larger. The main thing that it was larger than the width of the plate which throws snow. At the top, the pipe bends and sets the direction of snowfall.

Step 4. Frame

To make it easy to service or remove the engine, a special frame is made on which it will be installed. The frame base has U-shape and made from metal corners.

Then metal strips are welded to it to mount the motor and the bucket with the auger. Holes are drilled in the frame to install the handle and wheels.

Step 5. Wheels and skis

IN production models for moving a snow blower wheels are usually used, however in homemade version quite suitable skis. It should be made of metal and attached according to the principle of an ordinary sled, however, on minimum distance from the frame.

If you use wheels, then the protectors should have maximum grip and frost resistance.

Step 6. Handles

Handles are being manufactured made of ½ inch pipes and bolted to the frame. They should be comfortable for a person to move the snow blower.

Step 7. Rotor

In two-stage snow blowers, the auger design can use not a plate, but improved rotor. It has the shape of four fastened rectangular plates with an axis in the middle. It is desirable that the plates have rims along the edges in order to better “pick up” the snow.

The diameter of the rotor must correspond to the size of the bucket and not hit it.

Step 8. Engine

Can be used as a motor the simplest electric motors with a power of about 1 kW.
The engine must be insulated from snow and water. Otherwise, a short circuit will most likely occur.

The power cord must also be undamaged, and its length must provide the required distance between the power source and the snow blower.

Step 9. Connecting the motor and auger

The motor can be connected to the shaft in two ways: using a gearbox or belt feed. In the first case, the axis of rotation of the engine is located perpendicular to the shaft. Gearbox, connecting the motor axis and the shaft , causes the auger to rotate in the desired direction.

This design is more reliable and efficient, but is usually not dismountable and difficult to manufacture. The second case involves a parallel arrangement of the engine axis and shaft. They are connected to each other by a transmission belt. This design makes it easy to remove and install the engine, adjust belt tension.

Below are approximate drawings of the frame and bucket. Sizes can be adjusted individually.

Features of the package

In the simplest snowblower with an electric motor, made by yourself, The following configuration is used:

  • Electric motor.
  • Bucket with auger and outlet chute.
  • Frame with handles.
  • The wire.

However, as mentioned above, the screw can be made according to different principles. The supporting mechanism can be wheels or skis.

Engine – removable or non-removable. Despite this, the equipment of all homemade snow blowers is very similar, since optional equipment It’s almost impossible to do it yourself.

Fuses in the hay blower

  • Large solid objects getting into the auger is the main danger when using homemade snow blower. This entails not only breakage of the auger, but also jamming of the engine. In order to avoid engine breakdowns, special fuses are made.
  • Use safety bolts or bushings. With their help, the finished screw is attached to the rotating shaft. If the permissible load is exceeded, they simply break, but the engine remains operational.
  • The electric motor provides for a cable that will be exposed to the cold. Most regular cables are not designed to withstand extreme temperatures; they will freeze and perform poorly. For work in cold weather, wires of the types KG-KhL, PGVKV, SiHF-J, SiHF-O or their analogs are used.
  • The width of the bucket is adjusted depending on the width of the working surface. Most standard buckets may not be suitable for clearing very narrow paths, so dimensions must be provided in advance.
  • Single-stage snow blowers conveniently place the discharge chute on the top and side of the bucket so that the snow has less distance to travel. In this case, the auger spiral should be inclined at a slight angle in the direction where the chute is located.

So, making a snow blower with your own hands is quite easy. At the same time, the costs will be small, and the operating efficiency will exceed all expectations. Using an electric snow blower is much cheaper and easier than using a gas blower, but it is limited by the length of the lead cable. Read the instructions on how to make a gasoline snow blower with your own hands.

Having weighed all the pros and cons, we can say that for clearing snow from medium-sized areas, it is very convenient and at the same time cheap to have your own snow blower.

If you are the owner personal plot, then in winter period You will certainly be faced with the question: how to clear it of snow drifts. Of course, if you have the time and energy, this can always be done by picking up a shovel, but what if the area is quite large? In this case, you cannot do without expensive snow removal equipment. Moreover, not many people know that if the budget is limited, it is not so difficult to build a snow blower with your own hands.

Classification of snow blowers by type of transmission

Based on the type of transmission, snow blowers are divided into two types:

  • Self-propelled. It is somewhat reminiscent of a small tractor, which moves either on wheels or on tracks, and has special technical equipment. The engine of such a device drives not only this very equipment, but also the wheels, so it must be quite powerful - 10 hp or more. A self-propelled snow removal device is most often used to clear large areas. Its cost reaches the level of the cost of a used car, and manufacturing such equipment at home will also be very expensive.

  • Manual. Such a device is much less powerful, the engine is 2.5-5 hp, driving only the working parts, and it can only move with the help of a person. It is also quite expensive, but at the same time it is much simpler than the option described above. It is precisely such a device that is better, easier and cheaper to make yourself.

Any manual snow blower consists of a wheeled frame with control handles, an engine, a fuel tank, a snow-catching bucket equipped with skis and a pipe through which snow is thrown, and a working tool. It must be remembered that the main driving force You will be using the device yourself, so the snow blower platform must combine strength and lightness.

Classification of snow blowers by type of working tools

Snow blowers can also have different types working tools and be either single-stage or two-stage:

  • Single-stage snow blowers receive and discard snow through a rotating auger tool, which is shaped like the shaft of a meat grinder. The edges of this tool can be smooth to remove loose snow, or jagged to remove snow covered with ice.
  • In addition to augers, two-stage snow blowers have a rotor with blades. It is fixed on the drive shaft so that the blades are slightly ahead of the augers. This addition to the design makes it much easier for the snow bucket to enter packed or icy snow. Rotor blades are available in plastic and metal.

For self-made Both types of snow removal devices are perfect. Everyone should make a choice in favor of one of them, based on the specific requirements for snow removal equipment.

The scourge of a manual snow blower is large objects that fall into the bucket, such as stones. They can easily damage the engine. Therefore, the drive shaft of the device must be equipped with bolts and bushings that, under heavy load, will simply break, leaving the engine intact.

Snow removal devices can be powered or fuel-powered:

  • An electric snow blower is used to remove snow drifts close to the house and from the power source. Such a device is economical, but can only move as far as the power cord allows.
  • Gasoline snow blowers are more maneuverable due to their operation on fuel, but they are much more expensive to purchase and use.

Everyone decides for themselves which device to choose for self-production. If you decide to prefer an electric snow blower, then keep in mind that a regular cord in the cold can become brittle and deteriorate, so you should purchase a special one that is frost-resistant.

Instructions for making a homemade snow blower

Carefully study the snow blower drawing below:

  • Frame making:
    • in order to make a frame you will need a metal corner 50x50 mm, according to the drawing;
    • metal strips made of U-shaped profile. A quick-release platform will be fixed on them, but on which the engine should be located;
    • handles for controlling the device are bolted to the frame. They are made from ½ inch pipe;
  • Engine:
    • to ensure the operation of a homemade snow blower, a gasoline engine from a 6.5 hp walk-behind tractor is quite suitable;
    • it is better to mount it on a quickly removable platform in order to facilitate future repairs and maintenance;

  • Snow grab bucket, auger tool, guides (skis):
    • the bucket is made of iron for the roof, and its sides are made of plywood;
    • bucket width - 0.5 m;
    • for dumping snow mass, a piece of plastic sewer pipe with a diameter of 16 cm is suitable;
    • ¾ inch pipe was used to make the drive shaft;
    • a 12x27 cm metal plate is mounted in the middle of the shaft, and screws are attached to it. They, in turn, are made into conveyor belts 1 cm thick;
    • drive shaft makes rotational movements in self-aligning bearings, protective cover for which it is made from a support from the cardan of a Zhiguli car;
    • skis are made of bars with plastic linings;
    • The transmission belt connects the shaft to the engine.

All of the listed spare parts for a snow blower must either be purchased on the market, or searched in a garage or workshop, if you have one.

A snow blower assembled according to these instructions is very cheap compared to a purchased one. It is easy to care for, easy to maintain and repair. Very convenient solution is a quick release motor. It is much easier to clean it from contaminants from adhering snow than a permanently installed one. Even with large drifts, this device remains reliable and works smoothly and efficiently.

IN last years, winter pleases us with a large abundance of snow. If for those who love sledding and skiing this is a special joy, then for owners of dachas and private households snowfalls remind them of snow removal. One option to simplify and speed up monotonous work is to purchase a personal snow blower.

Not everyone can afford to spend several tens of thousands of rubles on purchasing a branded snow blower, which will be in demand 5-7 times throughout the winter. You can make a snow blower for a walk-behind tractor with your own hands. To do this, use a walk-behind tractor engine. It can be purchased separately or removed from equipment not used in winter. If the design of the snow blower uses an electric motor with air cooled, it is necessary to provide for the installation of snow protection for the air intake. Because when working there will be a lot of snow in the air.

How to make a snow blower for a walk-behind tractor with your own hands (drawings)

To make it easier to handle the snow blower, the working width of this design is 50 cm. Suitable size for cleaning garden paths in winter. In order for the snow blower to be driven into a garage or shed through the door, the overall width must be 60-65 cm.

To make the body of the snow blower auger, roofing iron was used. The sides are made of plywood (10 mm). Metal corners (50x50) were used in the manufacture of the frame. The handle was made from a half-inch pipe. The auger shaft is made of pipe (3/4″). A through cut was made in the middle of the pipe to install a metal plate (120x270 mm). When the shaft rotates, this plate will begin to throw away the snow.

The snow will move towards the plate thanks to a double-threaded auger made from a conveyor belt. There are also four rubber rings attached to the special plates.

Bearings are placed on the pipe. If the bearing's inner diameter is smaller than the outer diameter of the pipe, then the pipe needs to be ground a little. The drawing shows that adapters are used for the bearings.

To make the auger you will need 1.5 m of conveyor belt. The desired thickness is 10 mm. You need to cut out 4 rings from it, the diameter of which should be 28 cm. To do this, you can use two screws screwed into the board and rotate the tape in a circle. Or use a jigsaw.

To rotate the auger, you must use self-aligning sealed bearings 205. The bearings must be sealed to prevent snow from entering.

If the design includes an engine from a walk-behind tractor with an installed pulley, then the auger will be driven using a belt or chain. The pulleys, belts and bearings needed for this are purchased at car dealerships. At idle, the auger rotation speed reaches 800 rpm.

To prevent ice from getting into the auger, a safety pin is provided. When the auger jams, it will be cut off. If a belt drive is used, the pin will be an additional safety device, allowing the belt to slip.

Auger width 2 cm smaller size housings. This is done so that the gap between the auger and the housing is small, and also to avoid the auger touching the housing. The design of the snow blower provides the ability to switch the engine to another equipment in just a couple of minutes.

For this purpose, the engine mount is made quick-release, which eliminates the need to use a tool when rearranging. The process of clearing snow from a snow blower will be much easier if you remove the engine. Because the main weight of a snow blower is the weight of the engine.

Description and design of a snow blower for a walk-behind tractor

The base of the skis is made of wooden blocks to which plastic pads are attached. IN in this case electrical wiring boxes were used.

The main part of the rotary chute, which throws snow, is a piece plastic pipe, with a diameter of 160 mm. The chute that throws out the snow is attached to this pipe. The width of the auger blade should be less than the diameter of the chute, due to which snow will be thrown out.

Metal corners 50x50 mm are used to make the frame. Transverse corners 25x25 mm are welded to them. They are equipped with a quick-release engine platform. The transverse corners and the handle are fastened with M8 bolts on the longitudinal corners of the frame.

In this case, we used the same operating principle of a snow blower. He doesn't really need wheels, just to move around the barn. Therefore, instead of wheels, skis are installed, which allow the snow blower to be tilted forward to clear snow from the paths. If tilted backwards, the snow can be thrown away in stages in case of light snow cover. In the future, it can be upgraded to a self-propelled snow blower with one wide track, without much modification.

After painting, the finished snow blower will look branded.
