Date palm: growing and care at home. Growing date palm from seed, care at home

Young plants - annually, adults every 3-4 years In spring and summer 20-25, in winter 15-18 In spring, summer 2-3 times a week, in winter - once every 7-14 days Every day during the hot season Bright diffused light

Lighting

The date palm prefers bright but diffused light. Optimal place for dates there will be southern, eastern or western windows.

On hot days summer days it is important to ensure that the plant does not get direct Sun rays, as they can cause burns on the leaves.

A large palm tree that does not fit on the windowsill is best placed on the floor in a well-lit room, near the window. The date can tolerate partial shade, but in this case its growth slows down.

In order for the crown of the plant to be beautiful and symmetrical, it is recommended to periodically rotate the palm tree around its axis.

During the warm period, when the night air temperature outside does not drop below 12 degrees, the date palm can be taken to the balcony, veranda or garden. It is better to place it in partial shade.

In spring and summer, the optimal temperature for the date palm will be 20-25 degrees. More heat acceptable when high humidity indoor air. In winter, it is recommended to lower the temperature to 15-18 degrees. However, it is better not to allow a drop below 14 degrees.

Palma loves Fresh air. Therefore, it is recommended to regularly ventilate the room in which it is located, but do not leave the flower in a draft.

It is important to ensure that the plant's roots are kept warm.

The Canary date is the most cold-resistant. It can winter at a temperature of 8-10 degrees, and mature plant can tolerate short-term temperature drops of up to 5 degrees.

The Robelena date prefers warmth. For him even in winter time the temperature should not fall below 16 degrees.

The root system of the date palm is very sensitive to cold. Therefore, the pot should be kept warm, especially in winter period. It is not recommended to place it on a cold window sill or marble floor.

IN warm time year, when the average daily temperature rises above 12 degrees, the plant can be taken out into the open air. Date will be comfortable on a balcony, loggia or in the garden under the protection of trees. It is important to choose a place without drafts and scorching sun.

Watering

In spring and summer, the date palm needs abundant watering 2-3 times a week. It is important to avoid both stagnation of water and drying out of the soil.

Stagnation of water is fraught with the appearance brown spots on the leaves and rotting of the root system.

Drying out the soil of the plant provokes drooping and yellowing of the leaves.. In winter, watering is reduced to once every 7-14 days, depending on air humidity: the higher the humidity, the less frequent the watering.

Before watering your date palm at home, you need to prepare the water.

It is better to use rain or melt water. As a last resort, tap water that has been left for several days will do. The temperature should be about 20 degrees.

Spraying

When spraying a date palm, it is important to cover the soil in the pot with film. so that excess water does not fall on the ground.

Since the date palm is a guest from the tropics, for it good growth it is necessary to maintain sufficient humidity environment. Regular spraying will help with this.

For spraying, soft, settled or filtered water and a fine-grained spray bottle are used.

Washing the leaves will prevent the appearance of dry leaf tips and some pests, and will also clean the plant of dust. To give the plant a more well-groomed appearance, beautiful view Sometimes it is recommended to wipe the leaves with a damp cloth or sponge.

The soil

The soil for a date palm should be well-permeable to air and moisture, and be loose and soft. It is very important to put a good drainage layer at the bottom of the pot. This will protect the plant from stagnant water.

You can buy ready-made substrate for palm trees in the store. Another way is to make the mixture yourself. In this case, you can choose one of the options:

  • Clay-turf, humus-leaf soil, peat, sand, rotted manure (2:2:1:1:1);
  • Humus, turf soil, peat, sand, compost (2:2:1:1:1);
  • Sod soil, peat, humus, perlite (2:2:2:1).

You can also add a little ash or crushed charcoal.

Fertilizer

From April to September, the date palm should be fed once every 2 weeks, in winter - once a month, or stop feeding altogether. For this purpose, special fertilizers for palm trees or complex fertilizers for decorative deciduous plants are suitable.

Dates respond well to fertilization with potassium nitrate. To prepare the fertilizer, dissolve a level teaspoon of saltpeter in a liter of water.

If there is a shortage nutrients in the soil, the decorative qualities of the date palm decrease, it begins to grow more slowly. Timely feeding will help correct the situation.

It is important to apply fertilizers only in diluted form and into moist soil (after watering). Otherwise, there is a risk of burning the roots of the flower.

Humidity

For date palms, air humidity should be at least 40%. In winter, the plant should be placed away from heating devices.

Periodically, date leaves should be wiped with a damp cloth.– this will both prevent the appearance of pests and add decorativeness. To increase air humidity, you can place containers of water near the plant.

Due to too dry air, the tips of the date palm's leaves begin to dry out.

In winter, you can increase the ambient humidity by placing a damp cloth on the battery. You can also place a pot with a palm tree in a tray filled with wet pebbles, sphagnum moss, and expanded clay. It is important that the bottom does not touch the water. Otherwise, there is a high probability of rotting of the root system.

If possible, it would be great to use a humidifier.

Diseases

Let's look at how to care for a date palm during illness.

Thrips, mealybugs, scale insects, and spider mites can affect the date palm. You can use several methods to combat them:

  • Wiping the stem and leaves with a cloth soaked in medical alcohol;
  • Treating palm trees with warm soapy water;
  • The use of an insecticide, for example, Actellica, Fitoverma, Pyrethrum.

The palm tree may also be affected by pink rot or brown spotting.. Prevention of these diseases is to follow the rules of plant care. For treatment, you should use a fungicide, for example, Topaz or Fitosporin.

About availability spider mite This may be indicated by yellowed leaves of the plant. Brown plaques appear on the leaves, which means a scale insect infection has occurred. The leaves turn brown inside and become whitish on the outside - evidence of thrips damage. Wilting of the crown and rapid drying of leaves may be a consequence of the appearance of mealybugs.

Problems

Sometimes the date palm loses decorative properties and healthy appearance due to improper care.

  • The palm tree may also stop growing due to a lack of nutrients in the soil or too high acidity of the soil (it should not be higher than 7.0 pH);
  • Leaves may begin to wither, fall and darken due to the fact that the plant is in a draft;

The main mistakes in caring for a date palm include waterlogging the soil or, conversely, insufficient watering, low environmental humidity, and the presence of drafts. By avoiding these mistakes and putting in a little effort to ensure your plant comfortable conditions, you can grow a beautiful and healthy palm tree!

Transfer

The date palm does not tolerate transplantation well. Therefore, date palm transplantation at home is carried out as needed - when the roots are clearly visible in the drainage holes.

The optimal time to transplant a date palm is March-April.. Young plants (up to four years of age), usually annually. Adults - once every 3-4 years. The older and bigger plant, the more difficult it is to transplant it. For such specimens, change them every six months upper layer soil.

Palm trees are transplanted using the transshipment method.. The procedure is carried out very carefully, since the plant has fragile roots.

If they are damaged, the date may die. Therefore, it is recommended to break the old pot rather than pull the plant out of it.

Before replanting a date palm at home, you need to choose the right pot.

For transplantation, you need a deep one, tapering downward, 3-5 cm larger in diameter than the previous one.

When replanting, it is important to place a good layer of expanded clay drainage at the bottom of the new pot, broken bricks, clay shards or pieces of foam. Then the plant, very carefully so as not to damage the roots, is transferred to a new pot, and the voids are filled up new soil and are slightly compacted.

Replanting should be carried out only when necessary, that is, when the roots begin to “climb out” from the drainage holes. This is explained by root system The date tree is very fragile, after transplantation it takes a long time to adapt, and if the roots are damaged, it may even die.

Growing date palm from seed

IN room conditions date palm with only seeds or, in other words, pits. To do this, you need to buy fresh, not dried out dates, eat delicious dried fruits, and prepare the pits for planting.

Selection and preparation of seeds for planting. In order to grow a date palm at home, you can buy seeds at a flower shop or buy regular store-bought dates that have not undergone heat treatment and use the seeds from them. In the latter case, it is important that the material for sowing is healthy, not damaged by insects or mold, and not dry. Otherwise, germination rate is greatly reduced.

It is recommended to prepare several seeds (5-10), since there is a high probability that not all of them will germinate, and some may die as seedlings.

To speed up the germination process, it is important to prepare the seeds for planting. To do this, they must be cleared of pulp and then placed in a container with warm water(40 degrees) for 2-3 days.

This procedure will help remove any remaining pulp, which will prevent the seeds from becoming moldy in the ground after planting. It is recommended to change the water every day. The seeds suitable for planting sink to the bottom of the container. After the specified time has passed, they are removed from the container and washed under running water.

Then, to speed up germination, it is recommended to slightly disturb the hard outer shell. To do this, you can rub the bone on sandpaper or gently scratch it with a sharp object. However, this should be done carefully so as not to damage the core.

You can speed up seed germination in another way: by placing the seeds for 2-3 minutes in water heated to 80 degrees.

Planting seeds. For successful cultivation To grow a date palm from a seed, you need to prepare a soil mixture consisting of equal parts of peat, sand and raw sawdust. The seeds are planted vertically, sprinkled with a 1-2 cm layer of soil.

To create a greenhouse effect, the container is covered with glass or polyethylene. The container is placed in a warm place (optimally 25-30 degrees). To do this, the container can be placed, for example, near warm pipe or batteries. Before seedlings appear, the light level does not matter.

The soil should be watered regularly to keep it moist but not wet. Constant air humidity is the key to successful seed germination. To achieve this goal, you can put a small layer of sphagnum moss on the soil surface. The greenhouse should also be ventilated regularly.

The emergence of seedlings will have to wait a little. Sprouts appear from the seeds of fresh fruits within 1-2 months, from dry ones - even up to 6 months. If after six months the seedlings have not appeared, you should carefully check the condition of the seed to see if it has disappeared.

Seedling care. After sprouts appear from the soil, the container must be moved to a well-lit place, but without scorching sunlight. It is important to moisten young specimens regularly, but moderately, and also spray them with warm water.

When the sprouts reach a height of 10-14 cm, they can be planted in separate pots with a diameter of up to 15 cm. To prepare the soil mixture, you should take turf and leaf soil, sand, peat and humus in a ratio of 2:2:2:1:4. You can also add some crushed charcoal. It is important to lay a 2-3 cm layer of drainage at the bottom of the pot.

In the first years of life, the date palm will not be particularly attractive. Its first feathery leaves appear at 3-5 years of age.

The growth point of the plant is the top of the trunk, so formative pruning should not be carried out.

To make the crown symmetrical, young specimens should be rotated around its axis from time to time.

Description of the plant and species

The date palm is a member of the Arecaceae family. Its homeland is considered to be the tropics and subtropics of Asia, Africa and the Canary Islands.

Representatives of the genus are mainly trees, less often - shrubs. Some of them are relatively short, others are tall and spreading. IN natural conditions a date palm can reach a height of 25-30 meters, but in a room its height will not exceed 2-2.5 meters. At home, it needs a spacious room, since the diameter of the spreading leaves reaches 2 meters.

A distinctive feature of the date palm is its pinnately dissected leaves. Each plant usually has one trunk, at the end of which there is a spreading crown. The leaves are long, hard, dark green in color. The petioles are short and have spines at the base.

The date palm is a tree-like plant from tropical forests, which has been successfully grown at home for many years.

The date is unpretentious in care and fits organically into the interior of the room, adding exoticism and unusualness to it.

Even a beginner can grow this plant in his apartment if he listens to the advice of experts.

Growing rules

In order for this exotic plant has turned into a beautiful and spreading tree, you will have to be patient. And you can’t count on any fruits from it. In order for dates to appear on a tree, it must reach a height of at least 15 meters. In indoor conditions this is almost impossible. However, even without fruits, the palm tree will become wonderful decoration any interior.

Sprouting a seed

Like any other plant, a palm tree begins with a seed. There is no need to look for exotic seeds in the store.

You just need to buy a date and eat it, and leave the pit for planting. But before planting a seed in the ground, it needs to be germinated, otherwise it will either take a very long time to grow or will not germinate.

The rules for seed germination are as follows:

The seeds move into the ground after the first sharp shoots appear on them. They should be juicy and dense; only such seeds will give a healthy and strong tree.

Proper soil for planting

The optimal substrate for palm trees is a special soil, which is sold in flower shops. This is exactly what you need to purchase for transplanting sprouts. But it often happens that there is no opportunity to buy ready-made soil. In this case, you can do it yourself.

To prepare the substrate you will need:

  • turf;
  • peat;
  • sand.

All components are mixed together in equal parts. For greater looseness, you can add sawdust. Before planting, the container is filled with drainage, and the soil is laid on it.

Planting a sprout without errors

Flower growers' opinions on correct landing the bones vary greatly. Some people think that it is enough to place the seed vertically and lightly sprinkle it with soil. But the majority is inclined to believe that the seed should be laid with the sprouted seam up and sprinkled with earth.

The best option would be to plant several seeds in one pot. The germination and survival rate of exotics is quite low, so most of them will simply die. Germination can take up to 5 months, so the grower needs to be patient. The main thing is to cover the container with the seed with glass or polyethylene during this entire time. But periodically the soil should be moistened and given access to air.

Light during germination is not important for seeds, so they can be placed in a dark place with an air temperature of at least 20 degrees. You can moisten the soil with a spray bottle so that the seed does not wash out of the soil.

Caring for dates at home

It is not enough to plant a date pit and germinate it; you need to provide the plant with proper care so that it pleases the owner with its green leaves and exotic beauty. The tree reacts very sharply to any inaccuracies in care, which leads to drying out and dropping leaves.

Young sprouts quickly reach for the sun, so they should be fed generously water and replant as needed:

  • the pot becomes cramped;
  • its height is no longer sufficient for a palm tree.

A slowdown in growth usually occurs after the first leaf appears. It will not look like palm tree. The first leaf of the plant is narrow and oblong, with dark-colored transverse veins. But after some time they will turn into beautiful fans that flower growers value so much.

While the date palm is growing, care must be very careful. The plant is very light-loving, so you should place the pot with sprouts on the brightest window - south or south-east. In this case, the air temperature should not fall below 20 degrees. In winter, the window sill should be additionally insulated so that it does not cool the soil and does not damage the roots of the plant.

If several seeds have sprouted in one pot, you will have to transplant each plant into its own separate pot. To do this, you will need a special soil consisting of four parts humus, one part peat and two parts sand and earth.

The first transplant of sprouts is carried out after the plant reaches a length of 15 cm. It is necessary to pour drainage, which consists of expanded clay and crushed coal, onto the bottom of the pot. This will prevent the roots from rotting due to excessive watering.

On summer time It’s worth taking the palm tree out into the air. This will help the plant strengthen and avoid infection with many diseases. In order for the leaves on the palm tree to develop symmetrically, you need to turn the pot with the other side towards the light once a week.

Rules for watering plants

The plant must be watered so that the earthen ball does not dry out at any time of the year. In summer, the plant is watered 3 to 4 times a week with warm, softened water. The best option would be to use rainwater. But in winter, soil moisture can be reduced to 2 times a week.

The palm tree is a tropical plant, and therefore overwatering is harmful to it. Be sure to drain the water from the pan after watering so that the roots do not start to rot.

A must in summer spray and regularly wipe the leaves with a damp cloth. Once a month, the plant needs to be taken outside and arranged warm shower. The soil should be covered for the duration of the shower.

Fertilization and replanting

Caring for a date palm indoors requires the mandatory application of fertilizers to the soil. This should be done during the period of active growth - spring and autumn. Fertilizing is applied once every two weeks, but in winter it is necessary to reduce fertilizing to once a month.

Special palm fertilizers are ideal for the plant. But you can also use mineral fertilizers, which are diluted in water and used to spray the leaves. For foliar applications only, the fertilizer concentration should be halved.

The plant should be replanted in the spring. The ideal time for this procedure is April. Young plants need to be replanted annually. But after the palm tree is five years old, you can perform this procedure every two years. The palm tree itself will tell you that it’s time to change the pot: its roots will entangle not only the soil, but also the drainage.

The root system of the palm tree is very fragile, despite the fact that the roots are very thick. Replanting a plant is extremely stressful, so the procedure must be performed as carefully as possible. It would be optimal to keep the earthen lump intact.

The container for replanting should be chosen quite high. Moreover, each time its volume should be slightly larger than the previous one. A drainage is placed at the bottom of the pot, on top of which soil is poured to the middle of the pot. After this, the date roots with an intact earthen lump are carefully installed and sprinkled with earth.

Old plants are not replanted. Here a simple replacement of the top layer of soil will be sufficient. This will preserve the necessary nutrients in the soil.

Reproduction and pest control

Knowing how to care for a date palm, you can get beautiful plant in my house. It is important not only to know which fruit is ideal for seed germination, but also how to deal with pests on an adult plant.

If the plant was taken outside, it could acquire spider mites and scale insects. But even constant indoor conditions are not a guarantee that pests will not appear on the palm tree. In this case, the leaves of the plant will have to be treated with insecticides. Actellik is ideal for this. But the treatment should only be carried out outdoors.

As preventive measures A monthly warm shower with a soap solution added to the water is suitable.

Palm trees are most susceptible to diseases such as spotting and pink rot. In this case, the plant will have to be treated with fungicides. But they should not contain copper. Mancozeb and Ridomil are ideal.

Problems when caring for a palm tree

If a date appears in the house, care at home should be complete. Otherwise, the plant will quickly die. So, if the leaves of a palm tree begin to dry, then it does not have enough moisture. The plant should be sprayed more often.

But often owners flood the palm tree, believing that the plant, originally from the tropics, requires a lot of water. In this case, the plant will respond by turning the leaves black. The problem can be dealt with by reducing watering.

If you have a date palm in your apartment, caring for it at home may not be a problem if you maintain the room temperature and water the date in a timely manner. But if these requirements are violated, growth will stop. And when care is at the proper level, the palm tree pleases the grower with beautiful leaves and amazing growth.

Having a date palm at home is pleasant and prestigious, because it is exotic indoor plant will perfectly decorate any interior. It makes no difference what kind of plant you have; knowledge of how to care for a date palm will be useful to all owners of these indoor plants.

Even young bushes that do not yet have beautiful trunks are already proudly called palm trees, therefore good care will definitely make any unprepossessing sprout a real pride of the house if it is correct and constant.

Date palm at home

In the wild, the date palm grows in India and Africa; scientists know of 17 of its species. A tree lives among the hot sand for about 150 years, and during this time many new plants grow around it, growing from its seeds and roots. Is it really possible for a desert palm tree to grow in our apartments without specific care?

  • Robelena (Phoenix Roebelenii) with a very beautiful dense crown no higher than 1.5-2 meters.
  • Canary (Phoenix Canariensis) – height up to 2 meters, feathery trunks, hard straight and narrow leaves.
  • Finger (Phoenix Dactylifera) is the most common form, not very beautiful, but growing relatively quickly. The disadvantage of this plant is that its trunk will gradually become bare over time.

Growing dates at home requires a lot of dedication and time, but it can be a great hobby for many years. Many people try to grow date palms from, this is an excellent solution for anyone who does not have the opportunity to purchase an adult seedling, which is relatively expensive.

How to care for a date palm

The date tree will not delight you with its beauty for the first five years; decorative value will appear only after 5-7 years. Don’t expect that, having grown a date from a seed, you will be able to have an excellent decor for your home in just a couple of years.

To decorate your home with an adult indoor date palm, caring for it throughout the years has several important points:

  • It must be constantly turned towards the sun so that the sun's rays reach all the leaves. Without light, the leaves stretch, develop unevenly and become brittle.
  • The plant is very afraid of drafts. When ventilating your home in the autumn-winter period, you need to protect it from cold air currents.
  • When watering, water should not stagnate at the roots, so good drainage is required condition. For irrigation, use settled, soft water without chlorine at a temperature of approximately 20°C.
  • The leaves need to be sprayed daily, as the tree needs moist air. Once a week the plant will even need real shower, but during the procedure, the earthen lump in the pot must be carefully covered with film.
  • The leaves should also be regularly wiped with damp sponges so that they are not attacked by pests and simply to ensure that the palm tree has a well-groomed appearance.
  • Under no circumstances should you cut or break off the top of a palm tree. Trimming the top of the stem can result in the death of the plant.
  • Mineral and organic fertilizers apply twice a month in the warm season and once a month in the winter. Complex preparations for palm trees or decorative foliage indoor plants are suitable. They are entered only in wet soil, in diluted form.

Date palm – replanting, transshipment

The plant often begins to hurt after transplantation. It bears it very hard if everything is done in the traditional way. How to replant a date palm, is it necessary to do it at all?

A young date palm (up to 4-5 years old) is replanted annually, and an adult plant - after 2-3 years. This is done in the spring. Every six months it is recommended to remove the top soil layer and fill the vacant space with new soil.

Replanting is required only when the roots no longer fit in the pot and are clearly visible through the drainage holes, so each replanting (more precisely, transferring) is done into a pot 3-4 cm larger in diameter. To do this, the bush is carefully transferred into a new container, and the voids are filled with soil.

Experts in caring for date palms at home have noticed: the larger the pot becomes, the more intense plant starts to grow. But you should not take containers that are too large, as the tree’s growth may stop in them.

For transplantation, store bought ones are taken soil mixtures“For palm trees” or the soil is prepared independently based on:

  • 2 parts light clay-turf;
  • 2 parts humus-leaf;
  • 1 part peat;
  • 1 part rotted manure;
  • 1 part sand;
  • some charcoal.

The soil should be loose, soft, permeable to air and moisture. A good drainage layer should be placed at the bottom of the pot to prevent water stagnation as much as possible. The pot should be chosen not wide, but high, so that long roots fit well.

Date palm diseases

It would seem that the indoor date palm is receiving care, but its appearance is not the same. high level– it dries, the leaves turn yellow, darken, and curl. What could be the problem?

Let's look at what date palm diseases can occur due to poor care:

  • If the leaves become completely dark, almost brown, the trunk becomes soft, and a putrid smell is felt, then this indicates waterlogged soil. After such signs appear, watering stops and you need to wait until the soil dries.
  • It is necessary to examine the condition of the root system; to do this, the plant is removed from the container in which it grows. If all the roots are soft, watery, dark, then they have already died and such a palm tree cannot be saved. If there are living roots, then they must be carefully protected from dead ones by cutting them off and sprinkling crushed coal on the cut areas.
  • If only the tips of the leaves turn brown, this happens as a result of lack of watering, dry air or winter drafts, sudden temperature changes. Brown leaves below are not scary - these are age-related changes. The darkened leaves have died off, so they should be cut off with a sharp knife; they cannot be restored.
  • If a date palm turns yellow, it means that it is watered either with hard water or does not receive enough moisture and nutrients. From insufficient watering the leaves droop down, and this defect cannot be corrected. You can lift them by tying them to a support.
  • A pale appearance indicates too much light or red spider mite infestation. To protect the tree from bright sunlight, you need to slightly shade the plant.
  • If a date palm dries out, the leaves fall off, darken, curl, and brown plaques appear on their surface - the plant dies from pests.

Pest control - scale insects, mealybugs or spider mites - is standard for all indoor plants. You need to wash the leaves with a solution of laundry soap and spray with garlic extract. If severe damage is observed, a solution of Actellik (insecticide) is used wide range action) – 1-2 ml per liter of water.

Today you learned what a date palm can be like at home, how to care for it, how to replant it correctly and what diseases can harm your pet. Don't stop there, let your first experience in growing exotic plants help you create a real greenhouse. Winter Garden home is a dream that many people fail to realize, but you can definitely do it! Good luck!

Or Phoenix, or Date (lat. Phoenix)- a genus of plants in the Palm family, which includes about 20 species native to Africa and Eurasia. This plant has been known to mankind for more than two thousand years, the first mentions of it date back to the sixth century BC - even then the date palm was grown in Mesopotamia, on the territory of modern Iraq. The date palm belongs to the cirrus species of palm trees, like howea or coconut, and in nature sometimes reaches thirty meters in height. The fruits of the date palm are a widely known and beloved delicacy for which the plant is grown on an industrial scale. In addition, date palm sap is used to produce sugar. However, the indoor date palm has long become popular, and interest in it has especially increased since it became known that it is quite possible to grow it from a date seed. But before you grow a date palm at home, you should study its growing conditions in nature.

Domestic date palm - growing conditions

In nature, the date palm plant is a tree or squat shrub with feathery leaves - the main decorative advantage of the plant. A date palm at home can only grow up to two meters, and even in this case, a date palm indoor plant requires significant space, so an adult plant is placed in rooms where there is almost no furniture. But if a date palm is grown from a seed, at home you can always find a place for a small pot, because such a tree will grow for a very long time, and then, lo and behold, living conditions will change for the better, and there will be enough space in the apartment for a date palm. In the end, an adult large plant can be placed in the office. The date palm blooms with panicles of yellow flowers. But don’t expect to eat dates from your palm tree: the tree begins to bloom, and, consequently, bear fruit only when it reaches a height of fifteen meters, which is impossible at home.

Date palm from seed

How to grow a date palm from a seed

Before planting a date palm, you need to prepare yourself for planting. date pits, which to be safe, it is better to plant several at once, and prepare the soil for planting. The pits are suitable from fresh, candied or dried dates - the main thing is that the fruits are not subjected to heat treatment. In order for the seeds to sprout faster, it is better to slightly break their shell by rubbing sandpaper, and in order to obtain the soil necessary for seed germination, you need to mix raw sawdust, sand and peat in equal parts. The seeds are placed vertically in the soil and sprinkled on top with a layer of the same substrate 1 cm thick, then the pot or container is placed in a warm place where the temperature is above 20 ºC, or even better - 25-30 ºC, and kept, making sure that the soil was warm all the time, moist, but not wet. To do this, it is best to keep it near heat sources, laying sphagnum moss on the surface of the substrate. Don’t expect quick results: a seed can sit in the ground and swell for three or six months before it sprouts.

When the sprouts hatch, move the container to bright light, protecting the seedlings from direct rays, regularly moisten the soil and spray the seedlings with warm water, and when they grow to 10-15 cm, plant the seedlings in personal pots with a diameter of 15 cm in soil consisting of four parts humus, one part of peat soil with the addition of two parts each of sand, turf and leaf soil. Also throw a couple of handfuls of charcoal into the mixture and mix everything thoroughly before planting. Don't forget to put a layer of drainage material at the bottom of the pot.

A date palm grown from seed at home can produce leaves only in the third or even fifth year of life. The growing point of the date palm is at the top of the trunk, so you cannot cut it or in any way try to shape the crown of the tree. Make sure that new arrow the leaf was turned from light to shade, and from time to time turn the pot around its axis so that the crown of the tree is formed evenly.

Date palm care at home

How to care for a date palm

Caring for your home date palm is very simple. It should be kept in a bright, sunny place in a well-ventilated area. The temperature in summer can be any, and in winter it should be no higher than 18 ºC and no lower than 12 ºC.

In hot weather, date palm leaves can dry out at the ends, so it is advisable to spray them several times a day or wipe them with a damp sponge, and once a week, organize a shower for the plant, covering the top layer of soil from moisture getting into it.

In spring and summer, feed your palm weekly with organic and mineral fertilizers, in the fall, fertilize half as often - once every two weeks; in the winter, if necessary, it is enough to apply complex fertilizers once a month.

Watering a date palm

Growing a date palm requires regular, balanced watering of the plant with settled, soft water. What does balanced watering mean? This means that you need to moisten the soil so that the plant has enough water, but nothing more. To prevent excess moisture from stagnating in the roots of the plant, do not forget to put a thick layer of drainage in the pot when replanting.

Replanting a date palm

Young plants that have not reached the age of five are replanted annually, those that are older - only if necessary, because the date palm does not like to be disturbed. When replanting, you need to act as carefully as possible so as not to damage the root of the date palm, so it is best to use the method of transferring the plant from an old pot to a new one. The pot for the date palm should be deep because its roots are long, and each subsequent pot should be 3-4 cm in diameter larger than the previous one. Before replanting your date palm, do not forget about the drainage layer. If the old pot for the palm tree still fits, but you are worried that the soil has already lost the qualities necessary for the plant, carefully remove the top layer of the old substrate and replace it with fresh one. This needs to be done once every six months.

Date palm propagation

At home, the date palm reproduces only by seeds - in other words, by seeds.

Pests and diseases of date palm

Insect pests

Most often, if maintenance conditions are violated, the date palm suffers from spider mites, mealybugs and scale insects. The best way pest control - correct mistakes in care. It is best to remove insects and traces of their activity that destroy the plant. mechanically, rubbing date palm leaves with soap and vodka solution (15 g liquid soap, any dishwashing detergent or dilute a teaspoon of grated solid soap dissolved in warm water in a liter of warm water and add two tablespoons of vodka to the solution). If the number does not pass, after a week the treatment of the leaves must be repeated, just do not forget to protect the soil in the pot from getting soap into it. In case of severe pest infestation, you will have to resort to treating date palm leaves with insecticides, and the best of them is actellik.

Among the diseases of the date palm, spotting and disfiguring sheet plate, and pink rot, which affects not only the leaves, but sometimes the stem, and causes them to rot. Fortunately, only weak and sick plants are susceptible to infection by these diseases, so the key to the health of your date palm is to follow the rules of caring for it. If trouble happens and the plant gets sick, treat the palm tree twice with a fungicide containing mancozeb and methyl thiophanate, observing a week interval between sessions.

Date palm dries out

Sometimes the leaves of a date palm dry out from the tips, and this is clear evidence that the air humidity in the room where the plant is located is too low, with a normal level of 50%. This is not so much, and there are more than enough ways to increase air humidity to the required value, so do not be lazy to spray and wash the leaves, otherwise the palm tree will lose its decorative effect, and it will be a great pity for wasted time and effort. Remember that the date palm dries out only if the owner is careless.

Date palm turns yellow

If you have not changed your attitude towards palm tree care in time and have not resolved the issue of supplying the plant with moisture at all levels, the next signal of a violation water balance after the dry ends - yellowing leaves of the date palm. This means that you not only spray the leaves of the plant irregularly, but also forget to water it, allowing the earthen lump in the pot to dry out. If you don't have enough time to care for the plant, maybe it would be better to give your date palm to someone who has the time to take care of it?

Date palm leaves darken

When the soil in a potted date palm is chronically waterlogged, the plant's leaves gradually darken from green to brown, the trunk becomes soft, and the plant smells rotten. As soon as you notice this, stop watering the palm tree, remove it from the pot and inspect the roots: if they become dark, soft and watery, the plant has already died, but if there are still living roots among the rotten roots, then it makes sense to cut off the dead roots, sprinkling the sections with crushed charcoal, and transplant the date palm into fresh soil.

This decorative tree, like the date palm (photo presented in the article below) pleases the eye with its long feathery leaves and looks great in any room.

As an exotic crop, it adapts perfectly to indoor conditions. We’ll talk about all the intricacies of planting and caring for a home beauty in our article.

Growing conditions

The date palm does not grow fast. Likes bright sunny color, however, on hot days it is necessary to create shade for it.

For uniform growth, it is useful to turn the date on each side towards the light so that the tops of the leaves point deep into the room. Natural views They are accustomed to dry conditions, but it is still worth controlling the temperature in the room.

The crop grows especially actively in spring and summer, when it needs moderate air temperatures ranging from 20 to 25°C. In winter, the plant is able to grow normally at a cool temperature of 16–18 °C.

It is important to know: the plant does not like “walking air” around the room, and it is unwise to place containers with date palms on a cold surface.

The indoor palm tree prefers moist soil; complete drying out of the soil will negatively affect its growth. The date leaves will fall and this situation will not be restored.

Overmoistening the soil, especially when the temperature in the room is cool, can cause illness. It is important to consider the water temperature and monitor the frequency of watering.

It is necessary to control the composition and temperature of the water - the best option there will be soft water no higher than 20 °C.

Domestic exotic plants are in great need of spring and summer feeding; a liquid solution for large ornamental crops or bird droppings would be suitable, but not more than once every 10 days.

How to grow from seed

For growing from seed, only seeds collected from ripe fruit are suitable.

Date kernels must be whole and not dried out, because in the end you may not grow the desired tree. Before planting the seeds, they need to be immersed in warm water to separate the seed from the pulp (this can take from 24 hours to 2 days).

Planting of seeds is carried out in ready-made synthetic soil or in soil with peat.

Note: The soil should not be dry, but moist.

Until the sprouts appear, you need to carefully care for the date, do not forget to regularly water and ventilate the room. Once the sprouts have sprouted, it is useful to monitor the amount of moisture in the growing container, because any condensation that forms must be removed.

The first shoots should appear in 10-14 days, then the seeds can be planted in pots and transferred to a sunny place. If two weeks have passed and no sprouts have appeared, the seeds may have dried out and will need a little more time to germinate.

How to care at home

It makes no difference whether an exotic palm tree is grown from a seed or brought from flower shop, you need to find a place with moderate sunlight for it.

The date palm is big home plant, so it should feel comfortable in its flower pot. The culture does not tolerate transplantation well.

Young trees under 5 years old should be replanted no more than once a year, and after 5 years - once every few years.

Keep in mind: In order for the crop to continue to grow well, you need to change the top layer of soil with fresh soil once every six months.

When the time for transplantation comes, you can tell by the protruding roots from the drainage holes. The new pot is taken a little larger, 3-4 cm in diameter. Since the ornamental tree has long root shoots, preference should be given to tall containers.

The transplantation process must be careful. The focal plant is carefully transferred to a new pot and additional soil is added. The soil used is mostly loose and soft, so that water and fertilizer quickly penetrate to the roots. The plant does not like stagnation of liquids at the roots; to avoid this problem, a drainage layer is formed at the bottom of the pot.

Diseases and pests

Often an exotic plant succumbs to disease if it is not properly cared for. As a result of waterlogged soil, dark leaves will appear on it, and the trunk will become soft, and perhaps a putrid odor will be felt.

If these signs occur, you need to take the following actions: stop watering and pull the crops out flower pot. If the roots darken and become soft, nothing can be done. If there are living roots, it is recommended to cut off those that have rotted and treat the cut areas with crushed coal.

When the soil becomes completely dry, the tips of the leaves become dark in color. However, if the lower leaves Brown, then this is considered normal. Bright green color the crop may change to pale, the cause may be excess light or the appearance of red spider mites. If pests are not noticed, you should put the date in a dark place.

Take note: when a date succumbs to pest attacks, it begins to dry out, the leaves become dark, curl, and eventually fall off.

There are two ways to fight scale insects, mealybugs: wash the leaves with water and laundry soap or garlic extract. If traditional methods did not help, you can resort to diluting 1-2 ml of the substance per 1 liter of water.

Difficulties of content

Caring for it at home is not as difficult as it might seem at first glance, the main thing is to water it moderately and periodically ventilate the room. However, warning signs may appear:

If you notice that the leaves have begun to dry, it means that the tree is in a room with low humidity levels. It is easy to increase the humidity - wash the date leaves or spray it with water. Lack of sufficient moisture will lead to the next stage - yellowing leaves.

It is important not to forget to water the focal plant so that it continues to delight with its height and decorativeness.

If the room temperature drops below 16°C, the crop may stop growing. Under such conditions, the roots of the flower are not able to absorb nutrients.

Interesting to know: The date will not bear fruit in indoor conditions, because for productivity it needs to overcome the 30-meter mark.

In addition, the tree may lean to one side, as evidenced by a deficiency of certain microelements. Also, the cause of stunted growth can be caused by poisoning, where there are no microelements - manganese and iron. It is necessary to monitor the acidity of the soil; pH should not be lower than 7.

When growing a home palm tree, you want it to be healthy and grow faster, so you need to adhere to the main rule - the watering regime. There are several recommendations that should not be neglected:

  • The earth clod should not be allowed to dry out completely, especially during the summer period, otherwise the roots will quickly begin to die or dry out in the sun.
  • Decorative culture is adapted to high temperature conditions, but you shouldn’t water it during lighting, because water that gets on the leaves will cause them to burn out in the sun. Watering should be done in the evening or early in the morning.
  • During the summer period, it is not necessary to loosen the soil, but when there is less watering, it is advisable to do this plastic devices so as not to harm the roots.
  • If the leaves begin to turn black and the petioles turn yellow, it means that water has stagnated at the roots. It is necessary to let the plant dry, no more than 5 days.

Advice: organic compounds must be applied at intervals of 3 months.

If you wish, it is not difficult to grow an exotic beauty from a seed yourself. Suitable seeds can even be found in store-bought dates. And then, execute simple recommendations by the appearance of sprouts and watch how the exotic plant grows and develops.
