COUGAR peripherals are well known in Russian market with its excellent combination of functionality, quality and cost. We have already tested mice, keyboards and mouse pads more than once, but there were no headphones. For the first time, headphones under the COUGAR brand were featured at the Computex exhibition, and later they were also featured at the Russian IGROMIR exhibition. Now we have the opportunity to explore the capabilities of the COUGAR Immersa headset first in Russia. The model turned out to be interesting, both in appearance and functionality.

We have already seen a similar design with a wire headband from several manufacturers. Are there any similarities? If there is, it is only distant; any headphones can just as easily be called similar.

The first thing that catches your eye is the very impressive size of the Cougar Immersa. The headset is really large and looks massive, mostly due to the size of the earcups and the double-headband design. Looking ahead, I’ll say that it weighs less than it seems at first glance. The color scheme is familiar to Cougar: black and orange:
The headset is made of plastic and metal. Most of the cup is matte practical plastic, A decorative mesh metal. There are Cougar logos on the outside of the ear cups, and there is an orange border around the outer cylinder where the headband attaches. The cup itself is attached movably and takes the desired position depending on the shape and size of the user’s head. On the left earpiece there is a microphone that hides inside when not needed:

Cougar Immersa looks impressive and aggressive, it’s immediately clear that this is a gaming headset, the design is very interesting, the materials used are practical, no glossy surfaces. The only thing that alarmed me was a slight crack in the design of how the cups are attached to the headband.
I repeat, despite its large dimensions, the headset turned out to be relatively light: the company does not indicate exact data, but it seemed to me that it was a little more than 300 g, you can leave it on for hours without your head and neck getting tired. Overseas sites showed a weight of 350 g without cable, so I almost guessed right. It’s difficult to judge what will happen in the summer heat, but now my ears don’t sweat even after several hours of playing without removing the headset, the ear pads are very comfortable, my ears fit completely inside. Sound insulation is also excellent:
I already wrote about the cable, it is convenient and of high quality. The remote control on it is large in size, the controls include a microphone switch and a volume wheel, everything is simple and convenient. The adapter did not reach us, but the cable is similar, and the conductor itself is short, about 10 cm, which is quite logical when the length of the main cable is 2 meters. The headset does not require any additional software, just plug and play, the headset is compatible with desktops, laptops, mobile devices and the latest generation game consoles (with the exception of the first batches of Xbox One with older gamepads that require an adapter).
The sound in gaming headsets is usually tuned accordingly for maximum impact in games and movies. Cougar Immersa sounds exactly like this: the frequency response has a noticeable V-shape, low frequencies They are somewhat raised, there are also enough high ones, but the middle is a little low. As a result, the headset sounds great in games, all special effects, explosions, the hum of engines sound massive, dense and lively, just like all sorts of rustles and steps, which is also very important in games, especially for FPS and action games. The headset performed well in Star Wars: Battlefront, DOOM, Sleeping Dogs, Shadow Warrior 2, CS:GO, Mass Effect: Andromeda, The Division, GTAV, Watch Dogs, For Honor, Deus Ex: Mankind Divided, Dark Souls 3, Witcher 3 and my favorite in terms of sound design, Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice. For music, Cougar Immersa is not the best choice, uneven frequency response and some excess of lows are felt. Although this is a matter of taste: for some, it may well be suitable for some hip-hop, electronics and other simple genres. On the other hand, the headset has a very humane price tag of 1600 UAH and in this range competitors, Razer for example, sound worse, there is a greater excess of low frequencies. As for the microphone, it copes with its task without problems, the interlocutors heard me clearly, although they noted a slight lack of low frequencies. In the case of gaming headsets, this is not so important; it’s not really about singing songs to your teammate.
The Cougar Immersa headset belongs to the budget segment, I do not take into account those that have spawned in Lately Chinese with eye-catching designs and hard-to-pronounce names, but only well-known and popular manufacturers of gaming peripherals. The price tag is 1600 UAH and in this price segment the model looks very interesting: it is very comfortable, has excellent sound insulation, good sound in games and movies, is suitable for any sources and is easy to connect. Yes, it is not particularly suitable for listening to music, but it copes with its direct responsibilities without problems.
