  • with design changes.

At the next stage, the piece of furniture is decorated. IN in this case work is performed on prepared surfaces. 2. The old coating is removed.
  3. Individual sections or the entire surface of the product are puttyed, which is necessary when the table is old.
  4. Grinding. This is done using coarse, medium or fine grit sandpaper. It is selected taking into account the degree of roughness of the coating. For example, to eliminate significant defects, coarse-grain sandpaper is used. However, in any case, before moving on to the next stage, the structural elements of the kitchen table are processed with fine-grained sandpaper.

To obtain an even coating, coloring is performed several times. First, primary processing is carried out, then you need to let the first layer dry. If you plan to update your kitchen table yourself, you should consider popular decorating techniques. Most of them are carried out using paints and varnishes, but there are also those that are implemented using ceramics, tulle, etc.

Painting

For example, a painted kitchen table with a peeling finish is restored and varnished, which will preserve the natural wood grain. Painting will help hide minor defects and renew a product made of metal, plastic, or wood.

You need to choose a color. If the color scheme of the interior is bright, you should use muted tones, and vice versa, make an emphasis in the design, highlighting the kitchen table with bright colors. The pattern and coloring technique are selected individually. You can use alkyd enamel, water-based, oil paint. The choice is made taking into account the type of material. If you are deciding how to paint a product, you need to remember that all surfaces are covered in several layers. paints and varnishes can be sprayed from a can or applied with a roller or brush.

Decoupage

In this case, paper elements with different types of patterns are glued to the surface of the tabletop. Napkins are often used for this purpose. They buy special glue for decoupage; the decor will not last long if you do not apply varnish to the surface. It is also possible to use PVA glue. Sequencing:

  • the surface is degreased;
  • the tabletop is opened with an acrylic primer twice, each layer must dry well;
  • grinding;
  • coloring with a background shade;
  • the drawing is glued to the table, it is straightened in the direction from the center to the edges, it is better to leave the napkin to dry in natural conditions;
  • then applied acrylic lacquer, it is advisable to repeat the procedure 3-4 times, while you need to wait until the surface is completely dry.

Decoupage of a kitchen table can be done not only with the help of napkins - wallpaper and other paper-based materials are used for this purpose.

  3. They artificially create defects on the countertop: indentations from heavy objects, scratches, etc.
  4. The tabletop is covered with stain twice.
  5. To preserve the antique effect, tung oil should be applied immediately after treating the product with stain. It is better not to use varnish for this purpose, since a glossy finish does not help maintain the antique style. Tung oil should be thoroughly rubbed into the surface and left to dry overnight.
  6. At the last stage, the kitchen stack is treated with wax and polished.

You can use paint different shades to give the product an antique effect. The secret is to apply another layer; to create abrasions, use a sponge soaked in paint or a thin brush. The shade should be different from the background. A pattern is applied that imitates cracks or a pattern of peeling paint.

  • Pencil
  • Scissors
  • Napkins with drawings or special pictures for decoupage (in our version these are photographs)
  • Polyethylene file
  • Brushes of different thicknesses
  • PVA glue
  • Acrylic primer
  • Paints for furniture (in our version, acrylic white and black)
  • Stencil (but you can do without it)
  • Finish acrylic varnish

The table restoration process step by step

1. Now we can start designing coffee table. First we need to apply primer to the surface of the table. For this we use acrylic primer. It is needed so that the paint that will be applied in the future is more evenly distributed on our product.

We prime it carefully with a brush and wait about half an hour for the primer to dry.

3. Now take the drawing. In our version, this is a photograph. Dip the drawing in a bowl of water for 30 seconds.

It is very important not to overexpose the drawing, as the paper may be damaged. We take the photo out of the water and put it on a plastic file front side down.

4. Since our photo paper is thick, we carefully remove excess layers of paper so that the picture remains undamaged. Then use a brush to apply PVA glue to the photo.

5. Now carefully turn over the file with the photo stuck to it, place it on Right place on the countertop. Using the file, we smooth out the drawing so that it lies evenly. And only after that we remove the file.

6. Take white acrylic paint and, using a brush with stiff bristles, draw fields along the contour of the drawings. We try to hold the brush at one angle, as the bristles leave streaks. Then leave the table to dry for about 1 hour.

7. We decided to further decorate the corners of our table using a stencil. To do this, you need to attach the stencil to the corner of the tabletop and use a brush with acrylic paint black color walk on it. We hold the brush in a vertical position so that the paint does not flow under the stencil and is not smeared.

8. Now you can remove the stencil. Leave the table to dry for 1 hour.

9. And finally, after the paint has dried, you can apply a finishing acrylic varnish to fix the drawings. We also apply the varnish with a brush.

10. Finally, the restoration of the table is coming to an end. The table must be dry before it can be used. Dry in a well-ventilated area for 24 hours. After this time has expired, use it to your health!

Now you know how to update a coffee table with your own hands, the photos presented above demonstrate what a masterpiece you can create yourself. Don't throw away old furniture, give outdated items the opportunity to please you for a while longer, give them a second life!

Video: restoration of a bedside table using decoupage method

Today, buying a new coffee table is expensive. Especially when it comes to a coffee table, which should not only be functional, but also elegant and beautiful. Therefore, experts are developing more and more ways to restore a table with their own hands.

Before restoring the table, you need to clean its surface from old paint and repair all cracks and chips.

There are a lot of methods. They are conventionally divided into different types tables according to their purpose. But with the same success, you can apply to the coffee table the methods that are usually used to decorate kitchen or dressing tables. As practice shows, it looks very original.

Surface preparation

Before we start reviewing individual methods decoration, it is advisable to study how to prepare the surface. After all, this step is the same for all tables, regardless of which restoration method you choose in the future.

First you need to remove the old coating. It is risky to use solvents as they can damage the wood fiber. This is especially true for valuable antique pieces of furniture. In this case, it would be best to use coarse sandpaper and a sander.

As for the legs, if they are carved, you need to carefully sand them with special pieces of sandpaper for hard to reach places. It is strictly forbidden to remove the old coating with screwdrivers, chisels and knives. These tools can ruin the coating.

To level the surface of the table, it is necessary to cover it with a layer of primer.

If the legs are still quite problematic to clean due to their shallow relief, then you can use a thin wire tangle. And if this does not help, then you can use a little solvent. You just need to work with it very carefully, wrap a bandage around the match and dip it in the solvent.

When all the old coating has been removed, all cracks and flaws need to be well sealed. To do this you need to use wood putty. But first, the entire table is covered with a primer, which will protect the wood from damage and will subsequently provide better adhesion to the putty and finishing material. When the primer is absorbed, you can work with putty.

A small spatula is used for this work. Putty can be used either ordinary white or special colored - everything will depend on how you plan to restore the table further. After the putty has dried, sand everything again with light sandpaper and re-coat with a thin layer of primer.

The table is ready.

Let's consider two main options for restoring a coffee table with your own hands.

They are considered the easiest for beginners and not so expensive in terms of money, which is especially important in conditions of limited resources.

Restoring a table with paint and varnish

The first option is to cover the surface with paint or varnish. So, the paint must first be stirred well. Then take a soft brush and slowly apply paint along the grain of the wood. Note that it is painted over first top part, after which you should gradually go down. This is very important to observe, since otherwise it will simply be impossible to avoid non-decorative smudges.

The paint must be applied in two thin layers so that the putty does not shrink and is not visible under the paint. When you apply the paint, wait until it dries, then cover the table in the same way as described above, but with a transparent varnish. If you want to see a sparkling gloss, then the varnish is applied in two or even three layers. If you want a more natural matte surface, one layer will be enough.

Restoring a table with your own hands is possible not only with paint, but also with varnish, as well as special solutions that give a silver, gold or bronze tint. And it looks very elegant, especially on antique tables.

Restoration with mosaics

The second option is to cover the table top with mosaics. Mosaic is now being released different types. For a coffee table that will be located in the living room classic style, you can choose a mosaic with some kind of ancient or city landscape. If you want to place the table in the bedroom, you can choose calmer romantic patterns such as flowers, hearts, angels or cute birds and animals.

So, first the table is covered with a base, which will be the paint of the selected color. It is important to choose a shade that contrasts with the future mosaic - either very dark or very light. Due to this, the pattern will look brighter and more natural.

After the paint has dried (and this is at least 2 days), you need to mix PVA glue or special tile adhesive for mosaics well. After this, you immediately need to press the mosaic strictly according to the instructions so that the drawing turns out correctly. To be more sure, you can coat with reverse side mosaic, only the layer of glue in this case should be very thin.

About a day after the mosaic has set, you need to grout it. For this purpose it is used special remedy in the form of a powder or paste that matches the pattern. You can also use a contrasting color grout, which in some cases looks good.

Before grouting, experts recommend masking tape seal the edges of the tiles so that they do not get too dirty. The grouting itself is done either using a small spatula or a sponge. It all depends on which product you choose. After finishing the work, wait for the grout to dry, remove the tape from the mosaic and use a cloth to remove any accidentally deposited residue on the mosaic.

The legs in such a table can simply be painted or varnished, since the mosaic will no longer be inappropriate here. The color of the legs is selected according to your taste. But it’s best if it differs favorably from the main picture. You can simply coat them with a tint varnish that will highlight the naturalness of the wood.

So, two methods of restoring a coffee table are considered. Of course, there are many more options: this includes decoupage techniques, wallpapering, and decorating with oilcloth. But the methods described above are basic. Once you learn how to do them, everything else will be easier.
