Installation of polyurethane beams on the ceiling. Ceiling false beams: what they are and how to install them. Textures and colors of decorative beams

Some design styles used for interior and exterior finishing buildings require use as decorative elements. To preserve forests for future generations and reduce costs Supplies such a decorative element was invented as polyurethane beams. Modern production technologies make it possible to produce amazingly accurate imitation natural logs and cuts of trees of various species.

Qualitative characteristics polyurethane false beams

Materials used for the production of decorative false beams, are practically safe and harmless to humans. Moreover, polyurethane, used for casting, shows higher technical and user characteristics than natural wood. For example, the moisture resistance coefficient is much higher than that of wood, and the weight is insignificant, so for installing beams on the ceiling no additional calculations or use of spacers are required to increase the strength of the ceiling structure. Richness of textures and colors under the tree allows you to arrange the interior in any color scheme and stylistic organicity.

Advantages of polyurethane beams

In addition to the above technical characteristics, should be added to the benefits wood-look polyurethane beams for the ceiling the following:

  • fabulous appearance;
  • durability;
  • do not absorb odors;
  • resistance to temperature and humidity fluctuations;
  • ability to hide construction defects and joints of interfloor ceilings;
  • can serve as the basis for creating original lamps;
  • environmental Safety;
  • installation is simple and possible using adhesive compositions or on self-tapping screws;
  • option to create a unique interior in the style of chalet, Provence, eco and ethno.

Manufacturers have taken care of expanding the range and offer polyurethane beam in several design options: classic, Slavic, retro and modern. Therefore, in addition to

Who wouldn't want to live in their own home!

Everyone dreams about this!

Well, there’s nothing you can do about it – the simple, unpretentious comfort of rural life attracts us.

Atmosphere village house unique!

But today you can create exactly the same atmosphere not only in a cottage, but in any city apartment.

It would seem that with the help of decorative ceiling beams change the design of the room?

But it’s very possible!

In the interior of the room any wooden elements associated with warmth and comfort.

There is quite a large number of finishing options and design techniques, which allow you to create an exceptionally comfortable atmosphere in your home using wooden elements (or wood-look elements).

One of these methods is decorative ceiling beams.

How can they be used?

What effect can be achieved with their help?

And how exactly do they do it?

In this article you will find all the answers!

Regardless of the specific purpose for which ceiling beams are installed, they will add incomparable charm to any room.

The colors of ceiling structures and their texture help create a certain mood in the room and set a unique style.

It is very important how the beams on the ceiling are located:

  1. If the ceiling elements are placed along the longest wall, then visually the room will look even more elongated.
  2. If you want to visually expand the room, then the boards should be placed across the ceiling.
  3. If they are placed crosswise, then there will be no visual change in the geometry of the room. However, the room will look more voluminous.
  4. If there is too much in the room high ceiling, then the wooden elements are strengthened on the walls below the ceiling. Such structures floating in the air visually reduce the height.
  5. Creating a separation space between parts of the same room using boards is as easy as shelling pears. One ceiling element located at the junction of such zones is enough. Usually lamps or other decorative elements are mounted in the beam.
  6. If you need to highlight a specific part of the room, then the bars can be installed on the ceiling only in its area. Ceiling elements look more original if they are placed in the form of a herringbone or lattice.
  7. To visually elevate a room low ceiling, should ceiling structures make it smoothly transition along the walls to the ceiling. In this case, it is not the boards themselves that are located on it, but a small part of them.

What are ceiling beams made of?

Of course, the ideal classic ceiling board is a solid wooden beam.

It has a huge number of advantages with two disadvantages:

  • heavy weight;
  • high price.

Therefore, only wealthy people use such structural elements.

And during the construction stage they are used to support floors.

And not only from the point of view of decoration.

Although some home owners also install purely decorative solid wooden blocks.

Because they are different:

  • naturalness;
  • environmental cleanliness;
  • spectacular appearance.

However, you should also be aware of the disadvantages.

Two of them have already been mentioned.

Another disadvantage is the difficulty of installation.

Primarily due to the weight of the material.

By the way, you should know that the moisture resistance of wood is very low.

It is spoiled by microorganisms, and it is susceptible to rotting.

An excellent alternative to natural wood beams are U-shaped polyurethane products.

These products differ:

  • attractive appearance;
  • relatively light weight;
  • high moisture resistance;
  • simple installation.

Since the board has U-shape, then not only wires, but even pipes can be hidden inside it.

On polyurethane beams, a surface imitating real wood is created.

If you have the desire and some skill, you can make ceiling structures yourself that will be practically indistinguishable from natural wooden beams.

The simplest bars can be made from polystyrene foam.

If you need products of large thickness, then the foam is simply glued together to the desired thickness.

Cutting foam is very easy.

All you need is a sharp knife.

This foam plastic decorative part is covered with a self-adhesive film having a “wood” texture on top.

To install such a product on the ceiling, liquid nails are used.

Drywall or light plywood is also often used to create a U-shaped ceiling beam.

The parts from which the box is assembled are cut out.

The surface of such a box is also covered with self-adhesive film.

On the ceiling, a frame is first constructed from wooden blocks or metal guides under plaster.

The decorative box is attached to such a frame.

Functional use

Today, such beams are used, as a rule, only as decorative decoration rooms.

It is for this reason that there are a large number of options for their placement.

Sometimes they are used as actual support for the floor.

But this happens less and less.

Therefore, in addition to its decorative function, the ceiling board is intended to hide defects in the ceiling and communications.

It is very convenient to carry out communications inside a hollow board.

If it is solid, then it is very convenient to attach to it lighting.

A chandelier, for example.

Installation and fixing to the ceiling

The easiest way to describe the installation of an all-wood beam.

Through holes should be drilled through the body of the block, and dowels should be installed on the ceiling.

Since the weight of the product is large, the dowels should be installed accordingly.

Then using self-tapping screws long length the block is fixed to the ceiling.

Holes from self-tapping screws are sealed in any convenient way.

You should know that no glue is used when installing such a product.

It won't help at this weight.

But on such a board you can easily place a chandelier or any other lamp.

Installing a decorative beam on the ceiling is easy.

No special knowledge is required here.

The most important thing is to follow the instructions, take your time and do everything carefully.

And, of course, you will need an assistant.

This will make the whole process go faster.

Required Tools

Tools are something without which nothing can be done.

You will need:

  • roulette;
  • breaker cord;
  • hacksaw;
  • drill;
  • screwdriver or screwdriver;
  • corner;
  • ruler;
  • pencil.

Installation is carried out in several stages:

  1. The finished U-shaped plank is laid on the floor in the same way as we will attach it to the ceiling. Now you should measure the distance between the side walls.
  2. At the starting wall, two strokes are applied to the ceiling at the distance that you obtained when measuring.
  3. Along the entire length of the installation of the bar, marking lines are drawn between the strokes using a corner and a ruler or a breaker cord.
  4. Attach to the ceiling along each line wooden structure from bars. This will be the load-bearing frame located inside the decorative beam. The board is “put on” such a frame. If its width is small and comparable to the width of one frame block, then not two, but one block is fixed to the ceiling.
  5. Determine the length of the board. To do this, use a tape measure to measure the distance between the opposite walls to which it will adjoin.
  6. If the length of the ceiling decor is greater than this distance, then it should be cut. To do this you will need hand saw with fine teeth on the blade or frame saw. First, use a carpenter's corner to mark a cutting line. If the length of the span is such that the length of the board, on the contrary, is not enough, then they take several products and join them on the ceiling.
  7. Several methods are used to decorate the junction of decorative ceiling elements. After the ends of the beams are adjusted to each other as accurately as possible, the joining seam is either sealed with special metal plates or using a wax pencil. You can also use a U-shaped wooden ring, rope or decorative belts.
  8. The ceiling beam is placed on a frame that is fixed to the ceiling. Now it should be secured on the sides with self-tapping screws. The screws are tightened so that the head is sunk a few millimeters into the body of the board. So that you can then mask the heads with wooden dowels or a wax pencil of the appropriate color. The dowels are driven into the holes over the screws, cut flush and tinted.
  9. On final stage the joints are closed using decorative overlays or painted over with a wax pencil.

If you have various engineering Communication, then they can be easily hidden inside such decor.

It is very comfortable.

There is no need to ditch anything.

Communications are invisible and reliably protected from mechanical damage.

If your decorative items made of polyurethane, their installation is performed slightly differently.

Since we will be gluing them, we must first prepare the surface of the ceiling.

If there is peeling plaster, it should be removed.

Irregularities should be filled with putty.

The surface must be cleaned of dust, dirt and grease.

Ideally, it should be treated with a solution of 10% ammonia, diluted with water one to one.

Installation is carried out in several stages:

  • a horizontal line should be drawn on the ceiling using a tapping cord;
  • using decorative timber, preliminary markings should be made on the ceiling;
  • Wooden dies should be secured along the marking line at a distance of 50 cm;
  • special glue for polyurethane should be applied to the end and longitudinal parts and to wooden dies;
  • the beam should be placed on the dies and pressed firmly to them; until the glue has completely dried, you should use supports (if you used self-tapping screws to attach the product to the dies, then the holes from them should be filled with putty and painted over);
  • now you should attach the consoles;
  • after the glue has dried completely, you should carefully cut off the excess and tint the joint with paint;
  • A decorative belt is used to decorate the seam.

About the price of decorative beams

Naturally, products made from natural wood are the most expensive.

A pine board costs 2,900 rubles.

Hollow beams made of wood, U- and L-shaped, will be more affordable.

For example, the cost of one linear meter of pine board with a cross-section of 100x150 mm is 1,280 rubles.

And exactly the same beam, but made of larch, already costs 1,920 rubles.

Pine beams with a cross-section of 200x150 mm cost an average of 1,825 rubles, and those made from polyurethane are naturally cheaper.

And they don't sell linear meters, but in pieces.

Standard length is 3 meters.

A beam with a section of 120x120 mm costs 1110 rubles.

On average, the price of a product, depending on the dimensions and finishing, is 1150 – 1300 rubles.

As you can see, a decorative ceiling beam is not such an expensive product.

Video about decorative beams on the ceiling:

It will be enough to use a false beam made of polyurethane or plasterboard.

The functionality is practically unaffected, but the appearance is exactly the same.

Competent installation and decoration of ceiling beams, features of installation of products from different materials, ways to finish old beams.

The content of the article:

Finishing ceiling surface beams looks stylish and respectable. This is a great way to emphasize the originality of the design and transform the room. Laying wooden beams on the ceiling is carried out during the construction of the house. However, such elements are heavy and expensive, therefore, for decoration, peculiar false beams made of different materials are most often attached.

Ceiling beam design styles

If you decide to finish the ceiling in this particular way, then you need to correctly combine the installed beam with other decorative elements. Moreover, if you have certain design skills, this detail can be used in almost any style.

Let's look at what style solutions can be used to decorate beams:

  • Classical. Beams made of wood or wood-imitating material, combined with furniture or parquet to match, are undoubtedly a classic. Contrasting dark wood on a pastel light background looks original. But carving and painting will add respectability to the traditional interior.
  • Victorian. Premises decorated in this style look aristocratic and luxurious. Therefore, the beams must be installed from expensive mahogany wood with an antique finish.
  • Modern. Beams in rooms with this design can be painted in bright colors, lighting can be installed inside and various stylistic ideas can be implemented.
  • High-tech and loft. Finishing the ceiling in such rooms with polyurethane beams with a texture that imitates metal will be very useful. Especially if the walls in the room are in the form of brickwork.
  • Provence. Ideally smooth, snow-white painted beams on the ceiling will be an excellent addition to the French, rural style.
  • Rustic. Rough wood finishing, emphasizing the natural structure of the material, is the best option.

Do-it-yourself technology for installing beams on the ceiling

Equipment for simulating beams on the ceiling consists of several stages. In order to carry out installation work quickly and efficiently, you need to decide on the type of model, correctly draw up a diagram taking into account the characteristics of the room and securely fasten it so that the structure is smooth and durable.

Rules for drawing ceiling beams

The placement of beams on the ceiling can visually expand the space or make the room appear lower. Therefore, their installation scheme primarily depends on the effect you want to achieve.
  1. If the beams are placed along the length of the room, then it can be visually lengthened even more. Accordingly, to expand the space, the ceiling elements are placed crosswise.
  2. The cross-shaped fastening of the beams visually makes the space more voluminous.
  3. You can visually reduce the height of the room by fixing the beams below the ceiling.
  4. One beam with installed lamps or other decorative details can divide the room into zones.
  5. Placing several beams in one part of the room will visually highlight it. In this case, the elements do not have to be fastened parallel or crosswise. The Christmas tree arrangement looks interesting.
  6. You can visually increase the height of the room by fixing the structures to the wall and extending them onto the ceiling covering. In this case, it is not necessary to fix the entire beam on the ceiling, but only part of it.
The correct placement of ceiling elements will allow you to change the geometry of almost any room. Before drawing up the drawing, you must measure all the walls. Also include a communications supply diagram in the project.

Selection of materials for mounting beams on the ceiling

Variety of construction and finishing materials allows you to use for mounting beams:
  • Wood. It is environmentally friendly and looks respectable. Most often, preference is given to coniferous species (pine, larch, spruce, cedar). They are more practical and durable. Deciduous species (for example, oak) are used less frequently due to their high cost.
  • Drywall. Practical, relatively inexpensive, easy to process. It can be finished in almost any way.
  • Polyurethane. Modern material, characterized by high performance characteristics. It is available in a wide range of colors and textures, has a light weight and is moisture resistant.
Whatever material you choose for installing beams on the ceiling with your own hands, consider how harmoniously the products will fit into the overall design.

Beams from artificial materials There are also different types of profiles:

  • From chipboard or MDF. In this case, veneer elements in parts with straight joints are connected at angles of 90 or 45 degrees. Beams with rounded edges are made of veneered MDF or chipboard and connected with a profiled strip at the internal joint. Such models can be patinated and painted.
  • Made from durable wood slats. Oak, ash, pine, and larch are used for production. May have straight or rounded edges. Processed like regular wood.
  • From the array. In production, ordinary timber is used. The beam can be suspended or load-bearing. The cladding is carried out in the same way as with ordinary wood. These models will cost much more.

When selecting manufacturing materials, it is important to take into account the specifics of the room in which installation is planned. For installation in conditions high humidity, for example, polyurethane products are optimal.

Preparing to install ceiling beams

Before proceeding with the installation of beams on the ceiling, the coating should be prepared. This is a stage consisting of the following processes:
  1. We remove all the furniture from the room, remove lighting fixtures, mirrors, curtains, carpets, cornices.
  2. We clean the surface from the old finishing layer.
  3. We get rid of insecurely fixed elements.
  4. If necessary, remove the old wiring.
  5. We treat mold, mildew or rust stains with a special primer. You need to get rid of them, otherwise they will later appear on the new finish.
  6. We fill large cracks and crevices with cement-based putty.
  7. We prime the coating with an antiseptic composition.
  8. We level the surface with plaster (for unevenness of 5 cm) or starting putty (for unevenness of up to 5 cm).
  9. We prime the ceiling and cover it with fiberglass for reinforcement.
  10. Apply a layer finishing putty and wait for it to dry.
  11. We sand the roughness with fine-grained paper and impregnate it with an acrylate-based primer.

Features of fastening wooden beams to the ceiling

Ceiling elements made of natural wood are heavy, and therefore special attention must be paid to the reliability of their fixation. The beams themselves can be purchased ready-made or made from timber yourself. In the latter case, you should choose wood with a shrinkage of up to 12%, which has no damage or signs of rot. It is also important to treat the material with antiseptic compounds to protect it from moisture, mold, rodents and insects.

We perform the installation as follows:

  • We adjust the ends of the elements using a plane and sand them with fine-grained paper for the tightest possible fit.
  • We fix the bars to the side panels using self-tapping screws.
  • To fix the lower element with a drill, we drill holes in the bars in increments of 15-20 cm. They should be located at an angle of 90 degrees to the screws connecting the bar and the sidewall. The distance from each hole to the screw should be about 5 cm.
  • For reliability, we coat the wood with wood glue at the joints.
  • We connect all the parts with self-tapping screws, forming a U-shaped false beam.
  • We fix the bars on the ceiling in increments of 0.5 meters. The width of the bar must correspond internal size box emptiness.
  • We attach the beam to the bars using self-tapping screws, deepening the fastener heads inward.
  • We cover the recesses with putty to match the color of the wood.
  • We are finishing the ceiling element.

Please note that in order not to damage the ceiling finish, when painting the beam, you can paste over the joints with ceiling covering masking tape.

How to install plasterboard beams on the ceiling

The correct installation of a plasterboard structure on the ceiling, first of all, depends on the accuracy of the markings. That is why, using a level, tape measure and tapping cord, it is recommended to first mark the profile fastening lines and only then begin work.

Before making a beam on a gypsum board ceiling, we recommend that you read the installation instructions:

  1. We attach the guide profile using dowels along the marked lines.
  2. We make sections from the supporting profile that will be equal to the height of the beam.
  3. Insert the cut pieces into starting profile and fasten with self-tapping screws in increments of 10-15 cm.
  4. Along the bottom edge we connect all the segments with a guide profile.
  5. Using a jigsaw or a sharp drywall knife, we cut out parts from the sheets according to the dimensions of the beam.
  6. We attach the drywall to the profile with self-tapping screws.
  7. We cover the joints with sickle tape. We putty the gaps and deepening places of the fasteners.
  8. Apply a finishing layer of putty and, after complete drying, smooth out any roughness with fine-grained sanding paper.
  9. We prime the surface and finish the beam.
To install such a structure, it is better to use gypsum boards with a thickness of 9 mm.

Fixing polyurethane beams to the ceiling

The main advantage of installing polyurethane beams on the ceiling is the simplicity and efficiency of installation work. The design is lightweight, so to attach a polyurethane beam of standard length (3 meters) you only need three wedge bars.

In the process, we adhere to the following action plan:

  • We mark the beam fastening.
  • We drill a hole in the wedge-bar with a diameter 2 mm smaller than that used to fix the screw.
  • We screw the blanks to the ceiling in increments of up to one meter. If a joint of elements is planned, then a wedge must also be attached to it.
  • Processing special glue surfaces of the wedges and attach the beam.
  • For additional reliability, we secure the structure with self-tapping screws.

If you want to hide communications inside the beam, then you can make cutouts in the bars through which corrugated pipe wires are laid.

Ways to decorate old beams on the ceiling

Installing false beams does not take much time and does not require special skills. Anyone can handle installation work. But what to do if there are already old beams on the ceiling? They can be given an aesthetic appearance.

To do this, you need to use the following methods: painting (if necessary, preliminary putty and primer), installation of a polyurethane false beam on an old structure, decoration with ropes in nautical style, pasting mirror tiles. If there is a beam in the kitchen, then you can attach a special suspension (railing) to it and use it to store dishes, bags of herbs and kitchen utensils. Using the same methods, you can beat a concrete beam on the ceiling.

As for methods of completely masking ceiling elements, the most common are:

  1. Tension fabric. In order not to lose the ceiling height, you can make a two-level structure.
  2. Plasterboard ceiling. The sheets and frame should be attached to the ceiling, and not to the beam.
  3. Caisson structure. The most elegant and expensive option.
  4. Lining. The easiest way. Instead of lining, you can even use an ordinary edged board.

Please note that you can completely mask the beam only in high rooms, otherwise by hiding 15-20 cm of the height of the room, you can absolutely ruin the interior.

How to decorate beams on the ceiling - watch the video:

In the material, we examined the main methods of installing false beams on ceilings made of different materials. Acting according to the instructions and taking into account the recommendations, you will be able to perform installation work. And the tips provided on how to decorate a beam on the ceiling will help you transform the room and make this element not only decorative, but also functional.

Installing a decorative beam on the ceiling is relatively new design solution. It should immediately be noted that this can be a real load-bearing part of the building structure. In any case, the introduction of this element into the interior of the room, its proper decoration and processing will not only enliven the atmosphere, but also become a fresh design solution.

Ceiling beams in the interior

At first glance, a wooden beam indoors looks more natural in the room country house, the interior of which is decorated in a “rustic” style (country). However, when correct use this element will enliven the interior of both a living room in the fusion style and a completely high-tech office office.

At the same time, it is important not to make a mistake when choosing a combination of stylistic, color and functional solution this detail. Incorrect choice will lead to the fact that the beams on the ceiling will not turn out to be a successful decor, but an absurd protrusion on the ceiling of the room.

In addition, it may be necessary to close the ceiling beams if they do not fit into the overall stylistic decision. For this they can be used various designs, for example, installing a plasterboard false ceiling.

Advice! In order to load-bearing beam to hide from prying eyes, you can also use suspended ceilings, caissons, as well as various claddings made of edged boards or lining.

Using beams in various interior styles

Designers, when creating solutions for furnishing the interior of a room, think about how to decorate a room with beams on the ceiling. As mentioned above, most often this element is used as decor in design options with ethno-style motifs. However, using simple tips professional designers, decorative ceiling beams will become a harmonious part of the interior in other cases:

  • For classic interiors, designs in light or silver shades with a glossy surface are suitable. In some cases, carving or ornamental painting on this interior detail will give the entire room a special chic and luxury;
  • For interiors in the Art Nouveau style, you can use both light and dark colors in design. In this case, it is quite acceptable to highlight this design with contrasting and bright colors: red, bright blue or green;
  • "High-tech" is glass and metal. Therefore, a surface with an imitation of a metal coating would be especially appropriate here;
  • In the interior rustic style“aged wood” elements are often used. In this case, the surface texture can be given a rough “raw” look;
  • French interior requires the use of natural wood elements that are carefully processed. At the same time, they must be neat and without traces of rough finishing. Their surface can be whitened for this purpose.

Materials for making beams

Real load-bearing structures on the ceiling in houses are most often made of wood, but artificial beams on the ceiling made of various materials. The main ones are the following:

  • wood;
  • metal;
  • polymers;

Wooden beams

Wooden beams on the ceiling can be part of the ceiling, or they can also be decorative. Load-bearing elements made from oak or coniferous species, and soft wood species (ash, poplar, birch, aspen) are also suitable for the manufacture of decorative structures. By installing a beam on the ceiling, you can close external engineering communications (pipes, wires, cables, etc.) Hollow elements are used for this.

Metal beams

Metal structures are usually heavy and therefore require careful fastening. However, when using light metals (aluminum sheets, bent steel profiles, etc.), the mass of the beam will not be large. In addition to saving material and simplifying installation, cavities can be used for technical purposes (even placing ventilation ducts and pipelines for heating and water supply systems).

Steel beams

Plastic beams

Plastic decor is very convenient to use when decorating a room, because it is very light, cheap and easy to process. Polyurethane structures are resistant to moisture, they do not absorb odors and are easy to clean. Wide range of finishing options polyurethane products explains why it is so popular when used in interior solutions.

Decorative beams made of polyurethane

Decorative beam made of MDF

For the manufacture of prefabricated structures are used various options Chipboard and fibreboard. MDF is the most commonly used wood fiber board. medium density. On the outside, such a board is usually laminated with veneer or artificial coating, which imitates the texture and color of various types of wood.

Installation and finishing of wooden beams

If wooden beams are installed on the ceiling as a supporting structure for the ceiling, then only dry and high-quality lumber of rectangular or round shape without blue, rot, etc.

During installation, the ends of the structure are inserted into brick wall. It will be very difficult to change the supporting structure later, so it must be of high quality.

Fastening the ends of beams in brickwork

The ceiling on a wooden beam is installed immediately. Floorboards are processed (sanded and varnished) before they are installed on the supporting structure. The beam itself is processed after the ceiling is installed.

The surface of a wooden beam needs protection and additional finishing. For this, well-known methods are used: sanding, impregnation, tinting, impregnation, painting, etc.

Brushing the surface

One of effective ways processing of wooden beams is brushing - giving the surface of the material a pronounced texture and volume. To do this, you need a minimum of tools and equipment:

  • angle grinder (“grinder”);
  • electric drill;
  • special nozzles.

In addition, you will need metal, synthetic and sisal brushes. They are used sequentially for roughing and intermediate surface treatment, as well as for final polishing.

The sequence of work is as follows:

  • Remove with a wire brush upper layer wood In this case, soft fibers are selected to a greater depth;
  • Sanding is carried out with a synthetic brush;
  • Sesal brushes are used to polish the surface.
  • The treated surface is covered with stain and varnish.

This treatment imitates old wood.

Additionally, you can add wooden surface visibility of damage by bark beetles.

To do this you need an awl, an engraver and an engraving attachment. The “exits” of the woodworm are pricked with an awl, and the “paths” of the beetle are drawn on the surface with an engraver with an attachment.

Advice! Coniferous wood is best suited for brushing.

Placing a beam on the ceiling other than a functional one load-bearing function It also plays a decorative role in interior design. Right choice The material, design, and decoration of this decorative element will give the room special comfort and style. In addition, the use of beams allows you to rationally emphasize the geometry of the room and hide various communications.

In this video you can learn how to properly install decorative beams on the ceiling.

Once upon a time, ceiling beams were a necessary architectural element in the tradition of many peoples. The construction of spacious buildings could not have been done without them. village houses, domes of temples, theater vaults and long covered galleries. Today, ceiling beams in the interior are rather a decorative element that reflects a certain style. Often they are multifunctional and practical, but in order for false beams to become a highlight of the design, it is important to follow the recommendations of experts.

Wooden and metal jumpers- part of a roof, ceiling or roof structure of complex shape. It is impossible to build an attic, large terrace or extension without them. In this case, they carry an important functional load.

The main task when decorating a house with ceiling beams is to give the rough logs the most “lived-in” appearance. It is important that the atmosphere of the living room, hallway or recreation area with flights of stairs looks homely and hospitable.

Modern decorative ceiling beams in the interior look like wood, although they are made from composite and polymer materials. Most often they are hollow inside, and this good opportunity hide wiring and pipelines, secure lamps or brackets for suspended structures. In this case, they carry more of a practical load than a functional one, and false wood in the interior is very relevant today.

Wooden lintels can be adjacent to the ceiling, form a separate lattice, or be a support for connecting inclined planes, as in the photo of the ceiling with beams of the original design.

Interior styles where beam structures are most appropriate

Today it is customary to build houses with an aesthetic connection to a certain style, so that they look like an old “family estate”, and not like a new unfurnished building.

The most popular are buildings in the spirit of Provence, where the floors are made of light wood or covered with whitewash. In a Provence style kitchen, it is appropriate to decorate with garlands of garlic and onions, suspended from the beams with dry bouquets of lavender and spicy spices.

The natural color of dark wood is used in the style of a mountain chalet from the Swiss Alps. This style is especially relevant in buildings mansard type with a lived-in attic space. And although the ceilings here are the basis of the roof, they are used for insulation and decoration in all possible ways.

The Japanese style was initially focused on collapsible houses, since the elements often destroyed the buildings of the poor and rich islanders of the easternmost ridge. Beam floors it was easy to construct and dismantle after the tsunami and earthquake. This style has taken root all over the world, and decorative ceiling beams remain an indispensable attribute of a recognizable minimalist interior, where a tribute to Japanese culture is noticeable.

IN classic interior Only well-treated wood is used, carved, varnished or painted. Neat beams on the ceiling in classic or traditional interior look light and elegant. The color of the wood should match the shade of the furniture and joinery.

Another classic version– ceiling beams and floors made of the same material against the background of white walls. A similar solution is often practiced in imitation of retro or country style.

Beam structures are widely used in high-tech style - as a basis for original lighting kitchen or living room.

A unique design can be created in the decor to suit any historical style, if the use of decorative beams on the ceiling is structurally justified.

Please note: The owners of some buildings try to hide the structural beam base with suspended or suspended ceilings. This is impractical, since you will have to give up a significant part of the ceiling height. It is better to think about their decor, even upholstering them with fabric between the painted wooden beams in the bedroom or finding another option.

Imitation of wooden beams

Natural wood today is an expensive pleasure, and massive structures made of natural material very heavy. They create additional load on the foundation and walls; there are problems with installation and delivery due to their impressive weight. In addition, high humidity can cause them to “lead.”

Manufacturers of building materials have offered a convenient budget alternative made from polymer materials. The design of false beams, which are hollow inside, is not inferior to products made from natural wood, which have to stand for several months to reduce humidity.

Advantages of polymer decorative beams on the ceiling:

  • moisture resistance;
  • fire resistance;
  • attractive price;
  • relatively light weight;
  • large selection of textures and shades.

In terms of strength and some other indicators, decorative beams are even superior to wood. They have undeniable advantage– the ability to imitate any type of wood with a natural texture of various shades. For example, wenge-colored false wood in the interior, in harmony with eco-veneer doors, furniture and laminate flooring of the same luxurious chocolate color with a reddish tint.

Leafing through catalogs from manufacturers, it is easy to notice that there are different decorative beams for ceilings:

  • with the effect of varnishing and painting;
  • with cracks and imitation of aging;
  • smooth (polished) and “rough” processing.

In such products, everything is thought out for ease of fastening, and natural wood is difficult to install in a hidden way. U-shaped false beams – The best way hide communications in a bathhouse or sauna, in residential premises in loft, country style or in classic-type buildings.

L-shaped pseudo-beams are also produced, which are laid along the perimeter of the ceiling, the goal is the same - to hide pipes and wires, and imperfections in the articulation of surfaces. You can also build a rectangular imitation with your own hands to hide defects in the joints of floor slabs in an apartment.

False plasterboard beams are covered with film materials that imitate wood. This design is visually no different from the original, as in the photo.

Natural wood is preferred in houses made from natural environmentally friendly pure materials. The fact is that when everything in the house is made of wood, it reacts equally to temperature changes or changes in humidity levels - it “breathes”. If some of the structures are made from building materials that are not as ductile as natural wood, additional load will be created, especially during primary shrinkage or during minor seismic factors.

Color selection

Wood with high decorative qualities is considered to be the most in demand for interior decoration:

  • rosewood (wenge);
  • nut;
  • cherry;
  • ebony;
  • oak (bleached and stained);
  • ash;

When imitation wood cuts are used in synthetic analogues, the natural shade can be enhanced or “whitened”.

The color of the wooden beams on the ceiling in the interior is selected to match the overall design concept.

Corridor design in white

A good example in the photo is the design in a white country house.

Advice. When choosing a color, keep in mind that dark wood looks heavier, white wood looks almost weightless.

Colored ceilings should be in harmony with the main tone in the interior. Contrasting designs seem to “break up” the space; this is good for spacious rooms with high ceilings.

If the interior design turns out to be expensive, but a little nondescript and faceless, you can transfer all the attention to the upper plane, which will become the “highlight” of the decor, as in the photo.

Decor and aesthetics of ceiling structures

There is no point in hiding well-processed wood under the ceilings; it is better to add it to the interior with beams greater value in the design concept:

  1. Jumpers between columns or pilasters perfectly hold ceiling structures. To level out the shortcomings old building, it is better to reorganize the room using zoning techniques. Decorative beams at the top will help break up a large room into a kitchen block, dining area and reception area, as in the photo.
  2. In a room with a pyramidal or domed ceiling, decorative structures will help achieve the effect of “ open sky"if the background is light blue.
  3. A stretched glossy canvas behind the ceilings will add depth to the space.
  4. Beam structures with different patterns will help you create an inimitable interior - herringbone, checkered, triangles, hexagons.
  5. The floors will serve as the basis for reliable fastening of suspended structures:

  1. It is easy to hide defects in the articulation of surfaces behind the ceiling decor. Complex design with lintels will hide a leaking ceiling that could not be repaired in the usual way.
  2. A low ceiling in the kitchen can be effectively enhanced with the help of ceiling beams, a bar counter, hanging modules and other elements for placing dishes and kitchen utensils. It will look natural, like it once did in village houses.
  3. The interior of the attic looks most organic, where the lintels carry a decorative load. When the room is spacious, the periodicity of wooden beams gives a certain orderliness and meaning. It’s better when all the wooden decor is the same shade.
  4. A simple ceiling design with beams in a country house always looks very practical. This is a mass additional features storage and placement of kitchen utensils and small items. Various brooms and bundles, bags and bundles, hooks and nails were traditionally hung around the perimeter for temporary and permanent storage of anything.
  5. Decorative beam structures in the bedroom are not appropriate in every style. But canopies and other textile decor have long been attached to them. Look extravagant and sophisticated mirrored ceilings with black varnished logs in the sleeping area.
  6. Beam lintels are also used to decorate a mini-pool, a spacious bathroom or bathroom. In this case, false beams made of polymer materials that imitate wood are recommended. They are not afraid of high humidity, but it is convenient to hide pipes and electrical wiring behind false wood in the interior. If desired, the internal grooves can be made sealed.
  7. In a teenager's room, the interior with wooden beams can be advantageously decorated diode strip or garlands. Older students love artificial lighting and twinkling lights. Similar decor can become a source of special pride; teenagers willingly show off the original furnishings to their friends.
