OSB boards are quite often used for laying floors on joists, on concrete base, as well as on a dry screed. However, not everyone knows how to properly lay OSB and how thick they should be, as well as how justified such material is in a given situation. Which is better: OSB boards for flooring or other materials

To lay flooring or level the floor, you can use analogues of oriented strand board - plywood or tongue and groove boards. There are some differences between them.

As the width between the joists increases, the thickness of the slabs must also increase in order to properly distribute the load on the slab. For example, with a step of 60 cm, it is advisable to lay 22 mm thick OSB on logs.

Laying technology

There are several methods for laying OSB boards on the floor, it all depends on the type of base. Each method has both advantages and disadvantages. We will try to highlight the pros and cons of laying slabs.

Concrete screed

  1. First of all, the concrete screed needs to be thoroughly cleaned from dirt and dust. This step is dictated by the fact that the subsequent installation of OSB is done with glue, which should adhere well to the concrete.
  2. Priming the screed with a primer is also performed to improve the adhesion of the glue to the surface, which becomes dense after such treatment.
  3. Next, proceed to cutting the OSB sheets. When laying, leave gaps of 3-5 mm around the perimeter of the room and between the sheets. In this case, the sheets are laid staggered so that the four corners do not converge in one place.
  4. Now you can fix the sheets on the floor. The bottom layer is covered with rubber parquet adhesive, after which the OSB is additionally fixed to the floor using driven dowels.

Dry screed

The dry backfill on the exposed beacons must be carefully leveled, after which you can begin laying OSB boards. The first and second layers are placed with the seams offset relative to each other at a distance of at least 20 cm. Fixed in an oriented particle boards with wood screws 25 mm long, screwing them along the seams of the top layer every 15-20 cm.


Traditionally, plasterboard is laid on a dry screed, which is subsequently covered with laminate or parquet board. At the same time, the cost of drywall is significantly lower than OSB. It is advisable to use particle boards if they are planned to be covered with linoleum in the future.

In order for the self-tapping screws to fit flush with the slab, first narrow holes with a diameter of 3 mm are drilled under them, and then they are expanded at the top with a 10 mm drill. Thus, the cap will be completely hidden in the thickness of the slab.

On top of a wooden floor

Over time, a wooden floor can succumb to deformation, dry out and become brittle. In such cases, installation is done as follows:

  1. All protruding nails must be sunk into the board. This can be done with an iron bolt, the diameter of which matches the size of the nail head, and a hammer.
  2. All nicks and irregularities must be removed with a plane - manual or electric.
  3. OSB boards cut according to the markings should be placed on the floor so that the seams of adjacent rows are staggered.
  4. The OSB is fixed to the floor using 40 mm screws every 30 cm. In this case, the heads of the screws must be recessed into the thickness of the slab.
  5. The joints between the plates should be sanded at the final stage. It is most convenient to use a grinding machine, especially if you need to process a large area.

On the logs

Installation of OSB on logs is carried out as follows:

  1. First, the distance is calculated and the joists are laid evenly so that the joints of adjacent OSB boards were supported.
  2. Next, you should adjust the position of the joists so that any three of them are at the same level. To do this, linings are used, and for checking, a long rule is used.
  3. Installed logs must be securely fixed using screws on anchors or dowels. Only those logs that are made of dried wood and laid in a dry room are not secured.
  4. Laying OSB sheets is done in the same way as on a wooden floor, after which they are fixed with self-tapping screws every 30 cm.

Preparatory work before laying OSB on logs

How to attach OSB to joists


To lay OSB panels on the floor you will need the following: Building tools, such as a tape measure, a hammer, a water level, a jigsaw and a hammer drill. Also, for the installation process, prepare special fastening systems for woodworking and a nail puller.

Oriented strand boards with plain edges should be laid on the floor. It would be good if there were grooves on them that would help fasten the panels together. It is quite easy to install OSB floors yourself using the following instructions:

  1. We lay the slabs across the joists.
  2. The seams between the panels should be minimal and run clearly in the center of the joists. A distance of about two millimeters should be left between the OSB so that the floor does not deform over time and begin to creak.
  3. We leave a larger gap between the OSB board and the wall - 12 millimeters.
  4. We fix the panels to the beams using self-tapping screws or nails (ring, spiral).
  5. The step of fastening the slabs to the floor joists is 15-20 cm.
  6. We place the fasteners that hold the slab around the perimeter at a distance of about 1 centimeter from the edge. This is necessary so that it does not crack.
  7. The length of screws or nails should be 2.5 times greater than the thickness of the slab.
  8. The gaps formed between the walls and the rough floor covering must be filled using construction foam or mineral wool.
Thus, using OSB boards laid on logs, you can prepare a rough base for further laying parquet, tiles or carpet on it.

Laying OSB panels on a concrete screed


The procedure for installing OSB boards on a concrete floor is preceded by preparatory stage. Debris and dust must be removed from the base. For the glue to adhere well, the surface must be clean. Cover the base with primer. It will help the glue to better adhere to the panels, and will also prevent the screed from “dusting” during operation.
  • We lay the panels on the floor surface. If necessary, I trim the OSB using a jigsaw or saw.
  • Next, apply glue to the inside of the slab. To ensure that the product is evenly distributed over the surface, use a notched spatula.
  • We glue the particle boards onto the concrete base. Additionally, they can be secured using driven dowels, which should be placed every half a meter.
  • Between each slab we leave an expansion joint two millimeters thick.
  • The gap between the walls in the room and the wooden boards is no more than 13 mm. These seams are necessary to ensure that during operation of the coating, swelling does not form due to temperature and humidity changes.
  • The last stage of installing OSB boards on the floor is cleaning the panels from debris. We also seal all the resulting seams using polyurethane foam. It dries in three to four hours. Remove excess foam from the coating with a sharp knife.

Decorative finishing of floors made of OSB boards


After the installation of OSB boards on the floor is completely completed, you can begin finishing the floor covering. If you plan to leave such a floor as the main one, then, as an option, the surface can be completely covered with varnish or paint, and skirting boards can be installed around the perimeter.

No additional preparation of OSB for painting is necessary. You just need to clean the floor from dust and cover it with a couple of layers of varnish or paint. This can be done either with a roller or with a spray. Hard to reach places should be painted with a brush.

There are panels that cost more, but they are already available with a glossy sheen. Finishing such a covering will be very simple: you just need to decorate the perimeter of the room with a plinth - and that’s it, the floor is ready for use.

If you are laying on top of slabs rolled materials, for example, carpet or linoleum, then make sure that all joints between OSB panels are flush with the entire surface and do not stick out anywhere. Any small irregularities can be removed using sanding paper. The expansion gaps must be filled with elastic sealant.

There is no need to prepare panels for laying laminate over OSB. Small irregularities at the joints will be leveled out by the substrate.

According to the degree of moisture resistance, there are four types of OSV slabs. For the installation of floors, OSB 2 is used, which is intended for the installation of load-bearing structures in conditions of normal humidity, and OSB 3, which is applicable in conditions of high humidity. The second type is suitable for arranging the base of the floor along joists for further flooring of parquet and laminate. Selecting the required OSB board thickness


To ensure that the base of the floor, made with OSB slabs on logs with your own hands, is in no way inferior in strength to the screed, you should correctly select the thickness of the sheets and correlate them with the pitch of the logs. Compressed chip material is stronger solid wood, so the ratio in this case is somewhat different.

For flooring, sheets with a thickness of 9 mm or more can be used. With this size of the slab, the pitch between the load-bearing bars should not exceed 25 cm. A thickness of 16 mm corresponds to a log pitch of 35-40 cm. A sheet 22 mm thick will not bend at a distance between the bars of up to 60 cm. The peculiarity of the flooring of the slabs is that at the places where they are joined, the logs must be wide enough to securely fasten both joining elements. Therefore, it is desirable that the width of the upper side of the joist be at least 4 cm (preferably 5-6 cm). You should also take into account that you will need to secure additional fragments of timber (perpendicular to the logs) in the places where the slabs are longitudinally joined. A timber made from any second or third grade coniferous wood is quite suitable as a lag. Humidity should not exceed 20%. If the logs are in conditions high humidity, it is advisable to choose a block of larch or aspen. Before installing load-bearing wooden beams, they should be treated with antibacterial and moisture-repellent impregnations, which will significantly extend their service life.

How to make a floor base from an OSB board with your own hands


OSB sheets can be laid on logs installed on the ground floor and as interfloor partitions in private houses. This material is also used in apartments when load-bearing wooden beams are installed on rough screed or floor slabs. The only differences will be in the method of installing the logs. From the point of view of installing a floor with your own hands, you can consider the simplest option, when the beams are installed with a certain step on a concrete or cement-sand screed.

To work you will need the tools listed below:

  • jigsaw;
  • hammer drill with 6 mm drill;
  • screwdriver;
  • water level or laser level (over a large area), or spirit level at least 1.5 m long with small areas premises;
  • roulette;
  • marker or pencil;
  • hammer.

  • black self-tapping wood screws (length of self-tapping screws - slab thickness plus 25 mm);

The work begins with the installation of logs. They are installed in parallel. Their pitch should be calculated so that the distance corresponds to the thickness of the slabs and width (so that adjacent sheets fit well together on one joist). The bars closest to the wall should be located at a distance of about 20 cm from it. In places where the slabs are longitudinally joined, additional transverse sections of bars are installed. When attaching the joists to the screed or slabs, their horizontalness is regulated by linings made of wood chips.

Insulation is laid between the load-bearing bars. You can use polystyrene (foam plastic, penoplex) or mineral wool as it. The latter should be protected from moisture from the side of the rough screed, for which a vapor barrier membrane is used.

OSB sheets are laid over the prepared beam frame and secured to the joists with self-tapping screws. First you need to install entire slabs, and then use a jigsaw to cut out the missing fragments, having previously marked the material. OSB should not be laid close to the wall, but leaving small gaps of about 1 cm, which are necessary to allow thermal expansion of the material. The resulting cracks are filled with polyurethane foam for sealing.

Selecting OSB boards for installation

Let's find out how to choose slabs and other types of coatings. First of all, you should pay attention to the country of origin. The best material is considered to be produced in Europe and North America, where environmental safety requirements are met and new technologies are used. Next, you should choose the right degree of strength of the slab. Experts agree that products with the OSB index 3 are optimal for residential premises - durable, reliable, and moisture-resistant. It is also necessary to take into account the thickness - if you want to lay OSB on wooden joists, the recommended material thickness is from 15 to 25 millimeters.

Preparing tools for work

Before laying OSB on an old wooden floor or concrete screed, you will need to stock up on the following tools:

  • hammer;
  • jigsaw;
  • tape measure;
  • hammer drill;
  • screwdriver;
  • level gauge;
  • dowels and wood screws.

You also need to make sure that you have the necessary supplies on hand:

  • OSB boards;
  • baseboards;
  • insulation material (foam plastic, penoplex, mineral wool and so on.);
  • wooden blocks;
  • polyurethane foam;
  • dry glue mixture for insulation;
  • floor varnish.

Now you can begin work on laying the flooring.

Work order

To properly lay the material on a wooden or concrete base, you need to know how to perform each stage of the work. Our step-by-step instructions will help you with this:

  1. If the concrete screed is smooth, without obvious defects, installation is carried out directly on it. Use one layer of slabs, stick to next sequence actions:
    • clean the floor surface as much as possible from debris and dust;
    • cover the concrete screed with a primer for better adhesion of the glue to the base;
    • Apply special parquet adhesive to the OSB sheet using a notched trowel;
    • the tiles are laid on the floor and pressed;
    • between the mounted slabs, leave expansion joints of at least 3 mm, since under the influence of moisture the material can change size;
    • Drill holes in the corners of each OSB sheet with a puncher;
    • using dowels and self-tapping screws, secure the slabs to the concrete surface;
    • fill expansion joints with polyurethane foam;
    • The OSB floor is almost ready. All that remains is to let it dry for 4 hours, then you can cut off the excess foam, clear the surface of debris - and you can begin installing the finishing coating.
  2. In the case when you need to lay OSB sheets on wooden floors, the work must be performed in the following sequence:
    • clean the surface as much as possible from debris;
    • inspect the old boards; if there are nails, push them deep into the floorboards. If necessary, treat the floor surface with a planer;
    • Place the slabs pre-cut with a hacksaw or jigsaw on the surface, not forgetting the need to leave 3 millimeters gaps between them;
    • to secure OSB sheets, use self-tapping screws 4 centimeters long, keeping an interval between them of 20–30 centimeters;
    • recess the heads of the screws inside the slabs;
    • Carefully sand the joints between the sheets with a sanding machine.
