Photo of folding picnic tables

From the selection of photos you can find out what options are available for folding tables for outdoor recreation.

We often go outdoors with my family. To comfortably spend time on a picnic, I made a compact folding table.

As a basis, I used a metal frame with legs from an old crib. According to its size, I cut out a tabletop from multilayer plywood with an allowance of 15 mm on the sides and fixed it with self-tapping screws on the frame. On the protruding edges of the table top, I fixed a frame from a plank with a section of 20x15 mm from below.

Important!
The size of the tabletop allowance must be selected based on the thickness of the available planks.

To make it comfortable to sit at the table, I increased the height of the legs. To do this, I cut the tubular racks in half, placed a bar of suitable diameter between each and scalded it on both sides (photo 1, item 1)

For the stability of the structure at the attachment point of each rack, welded stops with screws (photo 2), which fix the legs in the unfolded form. I lengthened the lower jumper of one of the supports by 10 mm, so that when the table was folded, the legs fit one into one. To do this, cut it in the middle, inserted a small rod and scalded it (photo 1, item 2)

On a note
Choose the length of the bars so that the folded leg does not protrude beyond the tabletop.

The tabletop was decorated with decoupage. Using PVA glue diluted 1:1 with water. glued newspaper clippings to the surface. After drying, I applied a layer of colorless varnish on wood. The frame of the table was painted with waterproof paint for metal.

Take note

The barbecue won't get cold

To keep the barbecue freshly cooked on the grill hot and juicy throughout the feast, my husband made a convenient heater.

From a metal bar with a section of 10x10 mm, I assembled two figured (ordinary can be used) tripod stands with rings according to the size of bowls from of stainless steel(acquired at a hardware store).

I installed both structures on top of each other and welded (I processed the welding points with a file). I primed the entire surface of the stand and covered it with gold spray paint in two layers.

During the rest, I put the finished kebab in the upper bowl, and put the coals in the lower one. The heat coming from them does not allow the meat to cool down throughout the entire rest time. If necessary, coals can be poured.

By the way
The height of each tripod is arbitrary and depends on the dimensions of the bowls or other containers used.

For outdoor recreation, lightweight things are needed that would be compactly folded for transportation and instantly brought to their original position. And the first piece of such furniture is a table where you can arrange cooked food and drinks. A compact product can be easily placed in the trunk to take with you to the country house, nature, etc.

The legs in this design play leading role. The correct calculation of the length and setting of the fasteners will ensure the convenience of folding the table into a compact position and stability during layout.

In addition, a table assembled by yourself is usually thought out to the smallest detail and has the design that you like best.

Necessary materials

To make the simplest version of the table, you will need:

  • thick plywood board 550 x 300 mm (1 pc.);
  • bars for legs 700 mm long (4 pcs.);
  • bars for crossbars 450 mm long (2 pcs.);
  • cross bars for fixing legs 500 mm long (4 pcs.);
  • sandpaper;
  • bolts;
  • nuts;
  • washers;
  • nails.

In the manufacture, you can give the product any shape of the countertop, but it is more convenient to use the traditional rectangular one.

With the help of the drawing, it will be easier to follow the intended project.

Required Tools

The future table is easy to assemble if you have all the necessary tools at hand:

  • hacksaw;
  • jigsaw;
  • screwdriver or screwdriver.

The legs are attached to the main canvas with the help of elements that are in any home.

Using a screwdriver, you can make a model much faster and without much effort.

Table top size self-manufacturing choose your own, designed for 2, 4 or 6 people.

How to make: step by step instructions

Before starting work, do detailed drawing a solid table and its parts, indicating the length, height, width. Try to make the parameters of the product proportionate. With the help of the drawing, it will be easier to follow the intended project.

In order to make a folding table for equipping a picnic area, you need to fit all the parts to size. Wooden blocks and plywood can be purchased at a specialized department of any hardware store.

The legs in this design play a major role.

At home, once again check the length and proportionality of the elements. Let the blanks be a little larger, the difference can be eliminated at home with a hacksaw and a jigsaw. After trimming, process all the details sandpaper. It is advisable to slightly round the corners of the countertop with a jigsaw.

  1. Connect the legs with crossbars at a distance of about 25-30 cm from each other using bolts or ordinary nails.
  2. Screw the crossbars to the back of the tabletop.
  3. Fix the finished legs in the form of frames crosswise with bolts and connect one at the top with the crossbars, leaving the second free.

Try to make the parameters of the product proportionate.

To make the table more stable, make the supports slightly beveled at the bottom and top.

The picnic table is made on frames that are easily folded or brought into the desired position during operation.

The height of the table can be made smaller or larger, depending on your preference. To do this, measure the length of the bars for the support frames of the appropriate length. Try to make sure that the aspect ratio of the countertop and

For the manufacture of structures from other materials, self-tapping screws may be needed.

The finished structure can be painted or coated with a double layer of varnish, transparent or woody to choose from.

The shape of the tabletop can be round, square or rectangular.

So that dishes and other accessories do not roll off the table when tilted, you can supplement the surface with bumpers. To do this, take thin, low bars and fix them on the countertop with nails.

Using a screwdriver, you can make a model much faster and without much effort.

The edges of the upper part can be embossed. Using a jigsaw will help you with this, then clean the edges with sandpaper.

Hence, there are many options for design and construction.

Like wood, you can make plastic construction or combined, where the supports will be made of light metal.

Before starting work, make a detailed drawing of the whole table and its parts, indicating the length, height, width.

To make a picnic set in uniform style, it is recommended to assemble several folding chairs to the table. These compact products will save a lot of space and will be convenient for transportation if you are going with a family or friendly company spend a day in nature. In the off-season, they can be put away in the pantry until next spring or summer.

VIDEO: Do-it-yourself plywood picnic table. Part 1.

Going out into the countryside with your family is always a holiday. There is nothing better than to take the children and leave the “kingdom of metal and concrete” for the forest or the river after a difficult working week. Picnic furniture is needed to organize a normal rest. Gone are the days when people were content with bedspreads, which were both a sunbed and a table. And sitting on the often cold ground is not a pleasant pleasure. Therefore, with frequent trips to nature, the presence of a set of furniture for a picnic is also necessary, as well as fishing rods. If in times of shortage it was problematic to find a deck chair or a table, now you can buy such products in any hardware store. However, sometimes their prices are quite high.

With a small set of tools, desire and simple materials, a picnic table can be completely made with your own hands. At the same time, unlike factory products, a table made by oneself can be made to fit the size of the trunk of your car. In this case, its transportation will be convenient. How to make a folding picnic table with your own hands - further.

Making a picnic table. Material selection

Used to make folding picnic tables various materials. Their choice depends on the requirements for the finished product.

  • First, it must be quite strong. With its small size, a picnic table must withstand heavy loads, which requires a reinforced structure.
  • Secondly, as befits a portable item, it should be light. Making a picnic table from a steel corner and a sheet, the weight of which will approach a centner, does not make any sense, no matter how strong it may be.

Most the best option for the design and manufacture of a folding table-bench with your own hands will be profiled steel pipe. With a relatively small weight, it is quite strong, which will allow the product to serve for a long time. Aluminum can be an alternative to steel. Now on sale there is a wide choice aluminum profiles from which you can make a table frame. In addition, products made of this metal are much lighter than steel. The downside of aluminum is that it high price and difficulty in processing. Structures from it are assembled only with the help of riveting or special spare parts; it is almost impossible to weld it at home.

Laminated chipboard is often used as a countertop. However, its use in open areas is not possible, since it requires special processing of the ends. In some cases, textolite is used for the production of countertops. It is more practical, but quite expensive.

Often for making simple tables wood is used at home. This option is easier to work with than steel or aluminum, but wood is not very practical for outdoor use and requires constant maintenance.

DIY folding picnic table with wooden frame

You can make such a table in two versions:

  • With solid top.
  • With folding table top.

The second option is more preferable in terms of saving space for transportation, however, in terms of structural strength, it is inferior to models with a solid worktop.

To make a table with a solid top, you will need:

  • A board with a thickness of 20 to 40 mm for the manufacture of a table frame. Before starting work, they must be processed with a planer and sanding paper.
  • Plywood up to 10 mm thick for the manufacture of countertops.
  • Self-tapping screws with anti-corrosion coating for fastening body parts and countertops.
  • Bolts, washers, nuts for fastening the movable legs.

Work order:

  1. The first step is to make the frame of the table. For this, 2 pairs of boards are cut out (1160 mm and 400 mm, respectively). They are connected with 8 self-tapping screws - 2 for each connection. A small through hole is made in the upper part with a diameter slightly smaller than the diameter of the self-tapping screw. This is done so that when twisting the latter does not split the board.
  2. Then, leg supports are installed in each corner. They will allow the legs to unfold at a certain angle. The length of the thrust bar is 170 mm. Their ends are sawn at an angle of 15 °. The bars are attached to long boards with self-tapping screws.
  3. For the manufacture of legs, boards with a length of 730 mm are taken, the ends of which are sawn off at an angle of 15 °. Thanks to this, the table with inclined legs will stand evenly. The second end of the part should be in the form of a radius. This will allow them to fold easily. In order for a pair of legs to have identical radii, they are folded together and cut out according to the template with an electric jigsaw. After the end of the procedure, the parts are processed with sandpaper.
  4. In order for the legs on one side and the other to not interfere with each other during chipping, gaskets made of wooden beam. In this case, the distance between the legs in each pair will be different. The support column on this side is already attached to the gasket.
  5. The next step is to connect the legs in pairs with a piece of timber. This will allow them to have the same position when open and additional strength.
  6. The last step is to install the legs on workplace and bolted on. In order for the leg to go easily, washers are installed between it and the clamping nut. After completion of work, it is necessary to check the mechanism of the table in action. If the legs cling to each other, they are corrected.
  7. When the base of the table is ready, a sheet of plywood is screwed to it. This is done with self-tapping screws. After that, the entire table is opened with drying oil, and painted. You can just cover the stain and varnish.
  8. In order to make a folding wooden table, it is necessary to make two identical tabletops with a frame made of wooden beams. They will be connected using furniture hinges.
  9. To each of the halves, in the same way as in the case of a table with a solid top, folding legs are mounted. Ultimately, such a table resembles a suitcase. For ease of transportation, a handle is attached to it. So that when worn, it does not open spontaneously, special hooks are attached to it.

Do-it-yourself folding table for giving with a metal frame

To implement the following project, you will need:

  • Profiled pipe 20x20 mm in size with a wall thickness of 1.5 mm.
  • Two pieces of laminated chipboard measuring 600x600 mm.
  • M6 bolts, nuts and washers, metal hinges.
  • Bulgarian with cutting and cleaning wheels, drill, several clamps.
  • Paint, brush, primer.

Before starting work, it is better to make drawings of a picnic table. In this case, you can more accurately calculate the need for materials.

The dimensions of the do-it-yourself folding table of a standard design are 600x1200 mm. It is under these parameters that the blanks given below are calculated.

Production begins with the preparation and cutting of pipes to cut lengths. To weld one half you will need:

  • 1 piece -600 mm.
  • 4 pieces - 560 mm each.
  • 6 pieces of 40 mm.
  • 1 piece - 470 mm.
  • 2 pieces of 460 mm.

Further work order:

  1. After cutting, the parts must be cleaned with a grinder. The complexity of welding depends on the evenness of the cut line.
  2. Assembly and tacking of parts can be done directly on the chipboard. From short term exposure high temperature from welding it will not receive any damage. But the final welding is best done on concrete or metal.
  3. To begin with, 2 segments of 580 mm and one segment of 600 mm are laid out. They are tacked in the form of the letter P. It is imperative to monitor the straightness of the angle in the joints. Then, in the corners of the part along the side sections, one piece of pipe 40 mm long is welded. The same ones are welded on the side at the ends of the side segments.
  4. Further, in the middle of the side sections, clamps 40 mm long are welded.
  5. Thus, the preparation of the body of one of the halves of the folding table will be ready. The welded structure must be the same size as the countertop. Now you need to weld the folding leg. Inside the frame part, 2 pieces of 560 mm are laid, which are connected by a jumper 470 mm long.
  6. When the frame and leg are ready, you can weld all the joints and clean the seams with a grinder.
  7. Through holes are drilled at the junction of the legs and the frame. Bolts are threaded through them and secured with nuts. The bolt must be at least 70 mm long. Since their rotation is not provided for by the design, the head can be welded. After that, you should check how easily the leg extends.
  8. Then, at a distance of 160 mm from the first hole, a second one is drilled. It will be used to install reinforcing elements. On their installation, the assembly of the first console is over. In the same order, the second console is assembled, which is a mirror image of the first.
  9. When the consoles are ready, one piece of pipe 460 mm long is welded to each of them, which are connected using steel loops.
  10. Welded seams are cleaned, and the metal structure is primed and then painted. After the paint has dried, you can install the countertop. It is placed on the console and attached with clamps. Then holes are drilled around the perimeter with a drill, and the countertop is attached using self-tapping screws. The table is ready.

This design, although not distinguished by its lightness, however, due to the reinforcing elements and the steel console, this table can withstand up to 50 kg of weight.

Do-it-yourself folding table scheme: photo

Now for complete set I decided to make a tourist simple table - a folding bed. Such a table when folded looks like a small plywood suitcase. The table design project includes the manufacture of a plywood tabletop. This material is strong enough specific gravity it is quite acceptable for use as the main material for this type of portable furniture. The plywood suitcase is easy to carry and takes up little space in the trunk of a car.

For its manufacture, he prepared tools and purchased the necessary materials.

Tool

Since the furniture assembly scheme is based on plywood and wooden beam materials, an appropriate tool was needed:

  • drill;
  • jigsaw;
  • screwdriver;
  • wrench by 6 mm;
  • chisel;
  • level;
  • tape measure, square, ruler, pencil.

materials

I bought materials according to the list I compiled:

  • plywood sheet 140 x 70 x 1 cm;
  • timber 800 x 4 x 4 cm - 1 pc.;
  • plastic handle - 1 pc.;
  • suitcase locks - 2 pcs.;
  • fasteners screw-screw 100 x 6 mm with a grip for a wrench - 4 pcs.;
  • wing nut ø 6 mm - 4 pcs.;
  • furniture hinges - 2 pcs.;
  • screws 30 mm - 30 pcs.

I decided to make camping furniture from two folding tabletops measuring 70 x 70 cm each. The height of the legs was determined by 60 cm, so that they fit freely inside the suitcase. At the same time, such a height of the legs should provide a comfortable position for a person sitting at a table on an ordinary chair.

After the preparation for assembling a homemade camping table with his own hands was completed, he proceeded to step by step paragraphs of this manual.

Step by step instructions on how to make a tourist table

  1. A sheet of plywood was cut with an electric jigsaw into two parts measuring 70 x 70 cm.
  2. The beam was cut into pieces for the stretcher: 70 cm - 4 pcs., 620 - pcs., And for legs 600 mm - 4 pcs.
  3. From the pieces of timber 70 cm and 62 cm I assembled 2 subframes, connecting them with screws at the junctions.
  4. I laid plywood on top of the frames.
  5. I fixed the plywood sheets with screws around the perimeter of the frames with a screwdriver.
  6. With a chisel, I made recesses of 2 mm in size for furniture hinges in the back side of the adjoining frames to each other.
  7. The hinges were placed in the recesses and secured with screws.
  1. In the corners of the frames, I made 4 through holes ø 6 mm with a drill.
  2. I screwed 4 screws-screws into the upper ends of the legs with a wrench.
  3. On one side of the side of the frame, I fixed a plastic handle with screws.
  4. In places where the tabletops meet, I attached suitcase locks to the frames with screws.
  5. The screws-screws of the legs were inserted with threaded ends into the corner holes of the frames.
  6. With outside the threaded ends of the fasteners were secured with wing nuts.
  7. I put the table on its legs and checked the levelness of the tabletops with a level.
  8. Then he removed the legs, laid them inside the tabletops of folding furniture.
  9. He folded the countertops, closed the locks. The table took a stowed position.

To once again make sure that the furniture for tourism was assembled correctly, I assembled it again and checked all the fasteners. Here's what happened in the end.

Cost of materials

At the end of the work, I calculated the cost of materials in order to manufacture folding furniture:

  • plywood sheet 140 x 70 x 0.9 cm = 150 rubles;
  • timber 800 x 4 x 4 cm = 8 m x 110 rubles. = 880 rubles;
  • plastic handle - 1 pc. = 15 rubles;
  • suitcase locks - 2 pcs. = 20 rubles;
  • fasteners screw-screw 100 x 8 mm with a grip for a wrench - 4 pcs. = 20 rubles;
  • wing nut ø 8 mm - 4 pcs. x 2 rub. = 8 rubles;
  • furniture hinges - 2 pcs. - 10 rubles;
  • screws 30 mm - 30 pcs. in stock.

Total: 1103 rubles.

Labor costs

I spent 1 hour on cutting a plywood sheet and cutting a beam with an electric jigsaw. The assembly of the table took 2 hours. Total DIY time extendable table was spent in the amount of 3 hours. During the work, he used a respirator and goggles.

For those who have little experience in assembling furniture, it will be useful to watch the corresponding video, and then get to work. Such furniture will be indispensable for a tourist going on a hike for a picnic in nature.
