Designing a plasterboard fireplace

First of all, we determine the amount that can be allocated for the construction corner fireplace from plasterboard.

Before you start designing a drawing, it is advisable to make markings on the floor and walls that correspond to the position of the future fireplace and its actual dimensions. Then use a tape measure to measure each line and transfer them to paper. The fireplace portal can have both straight and curved lines. Drywall lends itself perfectly to bending.

In order to visually bring the false fireplace as close as possible to a real, wood-burning one, you should adhere to the proportions. The ratio of height to width is approximately two to three. The depth of the firebox (hearth) is taken in proportion to its height, approximately one to two or two to three.

When making calculations, it is necessary to take into account the thickness of the plasterboard sheets. The best option– 9 or 12.5 mm.

On checkered sheets we build a front view and a top view (if necessary, a side view). We note the overall dimensions and dimensions of each element. At the same time, we indicate on the drawing the position of the frame (guides, jumpers, etc.).

Ideally, to check the correctness of the calculation, a mock-up of the fireplace is built from cardboard. Thus, it becomes possible to correct defects, change the shape of the fireplace parts, or even move it to another corner of the room.

Assembling the frame of a false fireplace

For the frame we will need guide profiles and rack profiles. Both are made from galvanized steel. The guide profiles are shaped like the letter “p” and are distinguished by corrugated walls (to increase rigidity). Rack profiles have a special strip in the center, which is necessary for ease of installation and centering of screws and dowels.

  • — First of all, we check the accuracy of the markings on the floor and walls (using a plumb line and a building level).
  • — Then we cut out pieces of profiles of the required length with metal scissors. If there are parts with a radius, the metal profile must be cut (every centimeter) and carefully bent.
  • — We first lay out the profiles, then screw them to the floor with self-tapping screws. To attach the rack profiles to the wall, we use dowel nails. The distance between screws (similarly, dowel-nails) should not exceed one meter.
  • — To strengthen the structure, wooden slats made of coniferous wood are often used. This is useful in rooms with low humidity.
  • — Jumpers (to increase the strength of the structure) are cut from rack profiles and secured with self-tapping screws.

Important! When assembling the frame, it is necessary to pour a concrete pad. The height is taken from 20 to 30 cm, and the length and width are calculated based on the dimensions of the base of the fireplace, adding 20-30 cm to this value on each side. This is necessary when there is not enough flat surface floor and for additional protection from fire.

Preparing gypsum boards for covering a corner fireplace

For cutting drywall We take a knife (an ordinary stationery knife or one specially designed for gypsum board sheets), a rule (for example, a flat board or a meter ruler) and cut the cardboard layer on one side. Then we turn the sheet over and cut the cardboard layer on the other side, respectively. To break off the drywall, lightly press on it. If there are any unevenness, we remove them with a roughing plane.

For cutting parts with a radius use a hacksaw or jigsaw. After cutting, we clean out the irregularities.

If you need to cut it perfectly round hole, then it is best to use a jigsaw with special attachments, an electric drill with a crown attachment, or a circular saw (circular drill).

What to do if necessary bend a sheet of drywall? To do this, measure and cut a piece of drywall of the size specified in the drawing, lay front side down and make many shallow holes with an awl. An alternative to an awl is a spiked roller. We soak the gypsum board with water so as not to wet the bottom layer of cardboard. When the layer of gypsum is sufficiently wet, bend the sheet and fix it. After the moisture has evaporated, the drywall will finally take its desired shape.

We line the firebox with heat-resistant materials. To do this, we lay a layer of mineral wool and fasten the metal plates with self-tapping screws. Be sure to apply heat-resistant varnish or paint to the panels.

If you plan to place a mirror on the back panel of the firebox, then it is better to protect it with a layer of heat-resistant glass (for a small fireplace, glass from the oven door will do).

The prepared plasterboard parts are fastened to the frame using gypsum-metal screws, screwing them in every 20-25 cm (it is better to use a screwdriver).

The self-tapping screws are slightly “recessed” into the plasterboard, about 1 mm, to subsequently ensure ease of puttying.

Each self-tapping screw must fasten a sheet of drywall and a metal profile and extend into the profile by at least 1 cm.

Putty process

Putty is applied to achieve a perfectly smooth surface.

To begin with, they are bred primer and apply it to the drywall with a soft roller. The primer provides the best adhesion of materials. It can be applied before each layer of putty.

We cut out the mantelpiece from a solid, fairly wide board and fasten it with screws to the wall and to the frame of the false fireplace. If the board is artificially aged, it will add a special charm to the fireplace. The final stage is applying paint or stain to the surface of the mantelpiece.

The side elements must be fixed so that they do not extend beyond the boundaries of the first profile, that is, the walls are located between it.
  2. Wall profiles are screwed onto the base wall using previously applied markings. After this, the elements are removed and dowels are inserted into the resulting holes.
  3. “Udashki” are mounted on ready-made fasteners. When working with wall elements, the side ones are initially attached, and then those that will run parallel to the floor surface.

To ensure that the entire structure is level, each attached profile must be double-checked with a tape measure and a level.

To make a fireplace from plasterboard, you need to mark the sheets of material themselves. To do this, checking the existing frame, blanks are cut out. Recently, electric fireplaces have become increasingly popular among designers, since such a fireplace is easy to install, has many finishing options, and looks no worse than a real one (and maybe even better). If you decide to install an electric fireplace in your home, then in this master class I will tell you how to assemble a plasterboard niche for an electric fireplace with your own hands.

I needed to assemble and come up with a design for a corner fireplace. I drew a drawing (diagram) of the assembly on a sheet of paper to accurately follow the dimensions. I used ordinary ones as a frame. metal profiles for drywall and drywall with screws and dowels. She began to assemble the entire structure from the floor and gradually rose to the ceiling. The chimney was attached at the very end. Assembling the corner fireplace took me 2 days. The photo shows how the fireplace appeared step by step in the corner.

When the box for the decorative plasterboard fireplace was ready, I ordered glossy black marble countertops from a furniture workshop, installed them in place and secured them with self-tapping screws and metal corners. Glossy surface The countertops simply perfectly reflect the stone, which is clearly visible in the subsequent photos.

Next came the more interesting part - covering the plasterboard to give the false fireplace a natural look. It was decided to use molded elements made of plaster: a console and a mini pilaster. The pilaster was pulled out of plaster, and the console was cast using a silicone mold. Also for decorative purposes artificial fireplace, using silicone molds, I cast plaster moldings with a pattern. I attached them to putty under all the tabletops, both small and large. Just like the crown, I attached the molding near the ceiling.

I chose artificial gypsum stone - wild stone - as the main material for cladding. I laid it as usual on gypsum putty with grouting. Wild stone is laid a little differently than other types artificial stone, since all the elements are different and gather around the smallest brick.

When all the finishing work on the decorative fireplace was completed, I started painting it. First I colored it acrylic paint“antique gold” all the moldings (or rather the design on them), then the pilaster and console. To emphasize the ornament on the console, the pattern was treated with bitumen patina, and then the excess was wiped off from the tops of the pattern with white spirit. It turned out like aged gold. I did not apply patina to all the moldings - I was afraid that in this case the moldings would look dirty, so I stopped only at the console drawing.

To give the fireplace a sparkling whiteness, I covered the entire stone with white interior paint. After drying, I treated the stone with clear acrylic varnish with a wet stone effect so that the stone could be wiped clean from dust.

As you can see, imitation of a corner fireplace is possible from regular drywall. This material is easy to work with, it is lightweight, easy to cut and attach.
