A balance swing (other names: rocker, swing-pendulum, swing-scale) is a type of children's entertainment structure designed for two, or less often four, children to ride at the same time. Riding on such a swing promotes intensive socialization of children in the lungs. game form. In this article we will look at their main types and features. We will also conduct 4 master classes on how to make a swing balancer with your own hands:

  • From one log;
  • From two logs;
  • On metal frame with a wooden board;
  • On a spring.

The principle of operation of a swing balancer

The operating principle of the balancer swing is based on balancing or the overweight effect. In other words, they work just like classic lever scales. Regardless of the type, the design of the swing-balancer is made according to the same principle. Her key element- a long plank, the center of which rests and is attached to the base, support. At both ends of the bar there are seats with handles for children to hold on to.

Riding on this children's swing does not require any skills. Each seat can accommodate a child. Alternately pushing off the ground, one child rises up, while the second goes down. The movement of the swing occurs due to the children outweighing each other.

The main condition for the best swing is the ideal balance of the structure and approximately equal weight ratio of the children. Interestingly, there are no significant restrictions on the weight and number of riders. It all depends on the material used for the swing crossbar and its length. Even an adult with a child, or two or three children on each side, can ride on it.

Rules for safe operation

When using a children's swing, the balancer Special attention should be given safe operation, since their main passengers are children. We suggest that you familiarize yourself with the basic provisions on the requirements for the design and operation of a swing:

Follow these simple rules and use the scale swing correctly, then the process will turn into a fun and interesting game.

Types of swings balancer (by type of design)

At general concept designs exist the following types swing-balancer:

What material can be used to make a balancer?

Modern swing swings are made of three main materials, each of which has its own characteristics and advantages.

Let's look at them in more detail:

Balancer strength calculator

To carry out the simplest possible calculation of strength, you need to know two main parameters: the maximum angle of inclination and the rated load capacity for a purchased swing. If you make the swing yourself, then below there will be a recommendation on how to calculate the load capacity (however, we do not recommend completely trusting the data of such a calculation for a swing made by yourself).

Let's take two averaged indicators and calculate the strength for a swing swing as in the photo below. Using your initial data, you can calculate the strength for your swing thanks to our calculator.

So, the calculation logic. Let's assume that we have a maximum tilt angle of 35 degrees, and the total rated load capacity = 200 kg.

  1. 200kg * SIN35=114.8 ~ 115kg.
  2. 115 kg/2 = 57.5 kg.
  3. First test: 57.5*10=575 kg.
  4. Second test: 575*5=2875 kg.

The calculator looks like this. Choose values depending on your variables.

The implementation of such an attraction requires very little material. A spring from a car, a piece of plywood and several pieces water pipes- that's all that's required.

Assembly diagram- click to enlarge!

Spring in in this case taken from the rear suspension of a broken Renault master van. To attach the rocker, a standard support cup from the same car was used. Sections of water pipes 20 mm long are welded under the hollow part of the spring support cup. The topmost turn of the spiral is drawn into these three rings rotational movement and is fixed with bolts or welding.

The lower coil of the spring is welded to three steel brackets embedded in the concrete anchor of the base.

The rocking chair is made from inch water pipes. The “horse’s head” and the seat are cut out of multi-layer plywood 22 mm thick. If there is no thick plywood, you can glue thin plywood in several layers.

The “head” is inserted between two handle posts and secured with a U-shaped bracket through a plate with holes with a diameter of 9 mm.

The seat is bolted to a plate welded to the pipe and support cup. For this purpose, two holes with a diameter of 8 mm are provided in the seat and plate.

Please note that this attraction is intended for children, so please ensure that everyone
The rocking parts were well secured and the sharp edges were rounded.

Good afternoon You already have the main element for arranging a children's rocking chair. Such a spring is quite capable of supporting the weight of your child, while it will swing freely and not compress, thereby preventing injury to the rider.

All that remains is to prepare:

1. Metal pipe d=90 mm, length 700 mm;
2. Reinforcement d=20 mm, length 600 mm;
3. Flanges d=180 mm;
4. Sheet of moisture-resistant plywood 18 mm thick;
5. Clamps.

Because the prerequisite When arranging any children's swing, the safety of the child who will swing on it is important; special attention should be paid to the strength of fixing the base of the structure to the surface.

An anchor is made from a piece of metal pipe d=90mm, to the lower part of which reinforcing rods are welded. They are placed at the base of the pipe so that they form a cross. At the site where the swing is being installed, a hole is dug with a diameter corresponding to the dimensions of the anchor with a cross welded to it, and a depth of about 80-100 cm. An anchor is installed at the bottom of the hole, leveling it, and then it is filled cement mortar and leave until completely hardened for 2-3 days.

After the base has hardened, they begin to assemble the above-ground part of the structure. Flanges are welded to the upper end of the anchor, to which a boss d=90 mm is subsequently attached using M6 bolts. Flanges are necessary for a strong connection between the spring and the anchor. A spring is placed vertically on the boss, the upper end of which is also equipped with the same boss. Only after this the body of the rocking chair is installed. To increase the strength of the connection between the spring and the bosses, the welding points are additionally equipped with 30x4 mm clamps.

The body with the seat is attached to the rocking chair using M6 bolts and clamps, which are 50x6 mm strips cut from sheet metal. The body itself is easiest to make from moisture-resistant plywood. The shape of the body and seat depends only on the preferences of the master: it can be a fabulous little humpbacked horse, a fancy forest animal or a small boat.

To make a seat, first make a pattern of the product on a sheet of paper, and then transfer it to the surface of plywood, and cut out parts along the intended contour using a jigsaw. All cut edges of the product must be thoroughly sanded so that the little rider does not get hurt during play.

To make supports for the rider’s legs and arms, M18 studs can be welded at the place where they are placed, and on top of them, pieces of rubber hose of the appropriate diameter can be placed. This will prevent the child's feet from slipping while rocking.

Having secured the seat to the spring, you can start decorating the swing: decorate the structure with plywood overlays and paint it to your taste. Since the rocking chair will always be under open air, all wooden and metal elements needs to be painted oil paint. When thinking about the design of a swing, do not forget to consult with your child. Better yet, give him the pleasure of doing a couple of finishing touches with a brush himself.

Children's swings provide great entertainment in summer period. In addition to playing, they develop the child’s sports skills and teach them to communicate with friends in a playful way. A good example This type of design is a swing balancer. The easiest way to do them is to do it yourself. All you have to do is walk around playgrounds and shops, draw a drawing you like, and you can get to work. Today we will look at the most common children's swing models, which you may also like.

Having carefully studied the structure of the swing, you can draw a drawing yourself and easily make a rocking chair with your own hands. The design of any design works according to the same principle. The movable base is made of a horizontal crossbar, fixed strictly in the center to the stand. For the convenience of children, both edges of the movable crossbar are equipped with seats with handrails. The swing is powered by two children sitting on the edges of the crossbar by outweighing each other while simultaneously pushing off the ground with their feet.

The main condition for optimal swinging of the swing is approximately the same weight ratio of the children. If you make a balance beam from durable material, then even parents with small children in their arms can ride on it. By increasing the length of the crossbar, you get two seats on both sides so that four people can swing at the same time. If you add a support spring on both sides under the crossbar from car shock absorber, rolling out for small children will be easier.

An example of a diagram for building a do-it-yourself balancer swing

To make a children's swing, any material is suitable: metal, wood or plastic. The most common structures in dachas are log structures. With a little imagination and skill, the seats can be designed in the shape of animals or cars.

The main requirement for the design is that the rocking chair must be perfectly polished and fixed so that the child does not get hurt. Children's swings are designed for a minimum age of 5 years.

Options for the simplest designs

First, let's look at the simplest swing designs that you can quickly make with your own hands. So, you arrived at the dacha, and the first thing you came across were logs and boards.

  1. Make a stand from a thick log about 50 cm long. The larger the diameter of the log, the higher the children's swing will swing. Lay the log horizontally, nailing it on both sides along a block with a cross-section of 50x50 mm. They will ensure the stability of the rack, eliminating the rolling of the log on the ground. Install a horizontal crossbar from a 2.5-3 m long board. To prevent it from moving when rocking, drill a hole in the center of the board and secure it to the stand with a metal pin. Nail two round wooden handles across the edges of the board so that children can hold on.

  2. The simplest rack design can be replaced by a stump from a cut tree. Cut a 40 mm wide groove in the center of the stump. Take a small piece of board with a thickness similar to the width of the groove you made. Hammer the board into the groove, securing it to the stump with nails. Parallel to the board, use an ax to trim the edges of the stump so that they do not interfere with the swinging crossbar reaching the ground. Fix two bars across the center of the board. They will act as stops, and the crossbar will not move while swinging. Design the seats and handles similarly to the previous design.
  3. If there is no thick log or stump, make a support post from two thin logs 1 m long. Bury them vertically in the ground at a distance equal to the width of the crossbar board. Stepping back 50 mm from the top of the logs, drill holes and hammer a metal rod or pipe with a diameter of 12-15 mm into them. It should look like a small horizontal bar. Make a balance beam from a board and place it on metal jumper. To prevent the board from moving, attach two stops made of bars in the center or secure it to the rod with an overhead clamp.

Collapsible swing model

Wood is a short-lived material. If you leave a wooden swing outside in winter, it will rot over time. And children won’t ride in the cold. Here you can use your ingenuity, develop drawings and make a collapsible swing with your own hands. They are easy to hide in a shed in winter, and in summer they are quite easy to move to any place:

We use timber to make a swing

To make a beautiful swing with your own hands from timber, it is advisable to have drawings on hand:

Rocking chair on a spring

A rocking chair on a spring will be an interesting entertainment for a child. This design uses a spring from a car shock absorber. Moreover, it can play an auxiliary role during repulsion or completely replace the central support. In order for the swing to function correctly, the spring requires a strong attachment to the ground and the balancer:

  1. Dig a hole 80 cm deep. Make the width according to the size of the metal frame.
  2. Weld the frame from reinforcement with a diameter of 10-12 mm. Weld a cross at the bottom, and a metal plate with anchor bolts at the top.
  3. Install the frame in the hole, fill it with concrete so that the anchor bolts remain on the surface.
  4. From two metal plates 10 mm thick, make two flanges with a diameter of 180 mm or take factory ones. Weld pipe sections 100 mm long to the flanges, equal to the inner diameter of the spring.
  5. Fix one flange to the foundation with anchor bolts. Attach the second one to the balancer according to the swing design.
  6. Place the spring on the flange pipes and weld them.

When the structure of the general mechanism on a spring is clear, develop a drawing and begin making the swing itself.
