Linen. Cultivation and care in the garden. Flax seeds. Benefit and application. Decorative flax - cultivation

Can you tell me what linen looks like? Once, while walking with a child in the park, we caught the eye of a rather tall bush with blue flowers. A woman passing by said it was flax in bloom. I remember from school that the plant has flowers of a blue-blue hue, but I was confused by the fact that it was at the end of summer, and I always thought that flax was already fading by this time.

warm climate and fertile land our homeland create favorable conditions for growing on an industrial scale not only cereals, but also many other crops. Yes, in middle lane In Russia, you can often find entire fields that look like a giant blue cloud from afar. It blooms flax - one of the ancient plants, which is known for its oilseed and spring qualities. It is from flax stalks that a special fiber is obtained for the manufacture of natural fabric, and the seeds are the raw material for the production of flour and.

What does linen look like?

Grows it up annual plant rather large, but rare bush. The average height is 60 cm, but there are more high views"growth" up to 1.5 m. The central stem itself is straight and thin. The main mass of numerous small lanceolate leaves is located in its lower part, while at the top the shoot forms lateral branches. The leaves are painted light green and covered with a barely noticeable wax coating.

The fresh aerial part of the plant is poisonous and should not be used internally.

The root system of flax is taproot, the central root is thin, but not too long, painted in White color. In the upper part, the lateral branches are slightly larger, while at the bottom, the rod is overgrown with many small roots-threads.

How does flax bloom?

At the beginning of summer, unsightly-looking bushes are transformed when delicate flowers bloom on long peduncles. They are not too large, from 1.5 to 2.4 cm in diameter, are collected in thyroid brushes, consist of five wide petals with rounded edges.

The color of flax inflorescences depends on the particular variety. Most often, species with blue and blue flowers are grown, but there is also flax that blooms in white, pink and red-violet inflorescences.

Flax blooms for a long time and lasts all summer.

How does flax bear fruit?

In early autumn, fruits begin to ripen in place of the buds - small, up to 8 mm long, ball-shaped boxes with false partitions, inside which small seeds are formed. Seeds are usually no more than 10 pieces, and they themselves are flat and shiny, with sharp top, brownish color.

Flax is not only a useful crop widely used in textile industry. Perennial flax, as well as Narbonne and alpine species of this culture have highly decorative qualities and are successfully grown on household plots middle floor. Its blue, white or yellowish flowers are able to decorate any flower bed, and are also ideal for rock gardens.

What does a flax plant of different types look like

IN floral arrangement of the 25 species, only two are most often used: perennial and Narbonne. You will find a description of the flax plant of these species on this page.

Plants with erect strong thin stems, narrow opposite leaves and beautiful five-petalled flowers that open on sunny days.

Look at the photo - the flax plant has flowers of blue, white, yellow or red colors, all of them are collected in semi-umbrellas or brushes:

Perennial, or Siberian, up to 80 cm in height, stems glabrous, thin, twig-like, usually branched at the top. The leaves are small, linear, alternate, green or bluish.

As you can see in the photo, perennial flax flowers are pale blue or blue, 2 cm in diameter, collected in a loose corymbose panicle:

Sepals ovate, easily falling off. Capsule spherical, 8 mm in diameter, brown seeds, flat, 5 mm long. Flax perennial tolerates light shading, but grows better and blooms more abundantly in open places, well warmed by the sun.

Narbonne- a plant about 30 cm tall with thin graceful, slightly twisted shoots. It blooms in June-July with sky-blue flowers, 2.0-2.5 cm in diameter, collected in few-flowered inflorescences on the tops of leafy stems.

But alpine flax is also found. Taprooted plant 40 cm high. Plant grows from mid-April to October. Blossoms in May-June, seeds in June-July.

Below you can see what a flax plant of all these species looks like:

Growing perennial, Narbonne and Alpine flax

Flax is easily propagated by seeds. When sown in March in a greenhouse, they bloom in the same year, but can be sown immediately on permanent place autumn to winter or spring.

Flax grown from seeds blooms more abundantly and the plants are more viable than when dividing the bushes.

When growing perennial flax, as well as when growing other types of flax, 5 kg of compost or humus per 1 m2 is added to ordinary garden soil, if the earth is heavy, clayey, 1-2 buckets of sand are added. Wet soils are not suitable for flax.

Landing distance 15 x 20 cm. Best time planting seedlings end of May - beginning of June. Landings are weeded in a timely manner, watered only in dry times. Although each flower lives a little more than a day, in general, flowering is long - more than two months, from June to August.

Seeds of perennial, Narbonne and Alpine flax ripen in August-September in abundance. Easily propagated by self-sowing, in the spring seedlings can be transferred to new places.

Flax of all kinds is planted in rock gardens, on rocky areas among undersized ones.

Among flower growers, annual large-flowered flax is the most popular. And I have perennial flax growing on my plot.

I bought seeds of perennial flax of the Celestial Azure variety a few years ago either out of curiosity or out of necessity: I wanted to add a little blueness to my numerous flower beds. I chose the brightest places for planting, as I read that flax loves the sun. Digging up the soil in spring, I introduced about 3-4 kg of compost, 1 tbsp. a spoonful of potassium sulfate, superphosphate and Agricola fertilizer for flowering plants. She leveled the soil with a rake and shed it well. As soon as the earth warmed up to + 20 ° C, I made small holes, put a few seeds in each, covered it with garden soil and spilled it again with water. Two weeks later, the first shoots appeared.

Seedlings grew "by leaps and bounds", and very soon I was thinning them out. When thinning the seedlings, she left a distance of 20 cm between them. The extra seedlings were planted in a tighter group so that the bushes did not lean to the side. Flax perennial prefers moist soil, so I watered the plants regularly. Once, in the early summer morning, making the usual round of my flower kingdom, I noticed with joy that my lenok had blossomed. It was a wonderful sight: beautiful blue flowers, collected in forked inflorescences, warmed sunbeams and caressed by the warm breeze, swayed slightly, as if greeting me. It seemed as if the sky itself had descended to earth to draw rapturous attention to itself.

Now flax grows everywhere with me, because it reproduces well by dividing the bush. Perennial flax also propagates by self-sowing. It happens that the place that the sprouted seed has chosen is prepared for completely different plants, and then I boldly transplant lenok. He tolerates the transplant very well. And almost no maintenance. It is not even necessary to tie it up, although it grows up to 60 cm in height. The main thing is that the soil is fertile, watering regularly, and after flowering, do not forget to remove the inflorescences. In autumn I cut it off completely, I don’t cover it with anything, because flax is a cold-resistant plant. But still every year it becomes more and more. So far, this does not really bother me, because there are plenty of people who want to have a piece of heaven on the site. And I am happy to share the grown-up self-seeding with all relatives, friends and just acquaintances. Subscribe to our youtube video channel

Among flower growers, the annual is very popular. flax large-flowered, and it grows on my site flax perennial. There are a lot of varieties of such flax. There are among them linen with red, blue and even yellow flowers. I like blue linen, it is very similar to fiber flax, from which, by the way, they make linseed oil and linen fabric.

The decorative form of flax has albeit thin, but, nevertheless, strong erect stems, narrow leaves and amazing heavenly blue flowers in five petals, which open before lunch and only on a bright sunny day.

The petals fall off so quickly that a blue carpet soon forms under the plant. But every day more and more flowers bloom, so continuous flowering lasts from May to July.

Flax perennial - landing

I bought seeds of perennial flax of the variety "Sky Blue" a few years ago just out of curiosity: I wanted to add a little blueness to my many flower beds. I chose the brightest places for planting, because I read that flax loves the sun.

Digging up the soil in spring, I introduced about 3-4 kg of compost, 1 tbsp. a spoonful of potassium sulfate, superphosphate and Agricola fertilizer (for flowering plants). I leveled the ground with a rake and spilled it well. As soon as the soil warmed up to 20 ° C, I made small holes, put a few seeds in each, covered it with garden soil and spilled it again with water. Two weeks later, the first shoots appeared. Seedlings grew by leaps and bounds, and very soon I was thinning them out. She left a distance of 20 cm between the seedlings. The extra seedlings were planted in a tighter group so that the bushes did not lean to the side.

Perennial flax: care

Flax perennial prefers moist soil, so I watered the plants regularly. And one early summer morning, making the usual round of her flower kingdom, I was happy to notice that my flax had blossomed. It was a wonderful sight: beautiful blue flowers, collected in forked inflorescences, warmed by the sun's rays and caressed by a warm breeze, swayed slightly, as if welcoming me. It seemed as if the sky itself had descended to earth to draw rapturous attention to itself.

Now flax grows everywhere with me, because it reproduces well by dividing the bush.

Perennial flax also propagates by self-sowing. It happens that the place that the sprouted seed has chosen is prepared for completely different plants, and then I boldly transplant flax. He tolerates the transplant perfectly, and there is practically no care for him. It is not even necessary to tie it up, although it grows up to 60 cm in height.

The main thing is that the soil is fertile, watering regularly, and after flowering, do not forget to remove the inflorescences. In autumn, I cut the plants completely, I don’t cover them with anything, because flax is a cold-resistant crop. But still every year it becomes more and more. So far, this does not really bother me, because there are plenty of people who want to have a piece of heaven on the site.

And I am happy to share the grown self-seeding with all relatives, friends and neighbors.

On a note:

If the summer is not too dry, flax can be watered about once a week. In autumn, the plant does not need watering at all, it should dry naturally. It is enough just to cut flower shoots. Fertilizing is very important for flax, you can use liquid forms, enriching the soil with them when watering. The total number of nutritional procedures is 2-3 times during the season. Mandatory requirement is weeding, because weeds do not have the best effect on flax cultivation.

Pests, such as the flax flea, are also dangerous. Folk methods control is not always effective, but chemicals successfully cope with the problem. Unfortunately, charming linen is not very durable, however, this does not prevent him from remaining a favorite in modern flower beds. perennial species quite moisture-loving, but tolerate cold well. Flax in ornamental gardening is beautifully combined with other annuals in group compositions, rock gardens, flower walls, and mixed borders. » Perfect Choice for decorating Moorish lawns with cornflowers, daisies, marigolds and meadow clover.

On thin leafy stems, brightly colored cup-shaped or saucer-shaped flowers bloom. individual flowers short-lived and may not open in cloudy or damp weather, but new flowers bloom daily, and the bright color of the flax lasts for many weeks. The leaves are usually narrow, rarely more than 3 cm long. Different types flax can be annual, biennial, perennial or short-lived dwarf shrubs. Flax is often used in borders, and low plants are ideal for rocky gardens.

Although flax is hardy, some species growing among rocks do not like prolonged frosty weather or excessive winter moisture. Most types of flax prefer alkaline soil, but can grow on any of its types.
