Drywall - convenient and practical material for quick leveling and finishing of walls. But sometimes it is successfully used to create entire partitions. In this case, the wall immediately becomes dangerous for hanging heavy objects. Despite a lot of advantages, gypsum board sheets are still not ready to tolerate interference in their structure and can quickly collapse. But this does not mean that you can only hang a medal on a ribbon on a gypsum board wall. There are options for how to place heavy objects.

If you want to hang a heavy object on a drywall wall, you need to evaluate several factors. The very tolerability of gypsum boards to the weight of gravity will not say anything - there are a number of accompanying conditions. It is important to understand that a heavy object can be hung on a gypsum board wall only under the following conditions:

  • The drywall itself is of high quality;
  • The weight of the element that is planned to be hung does not exceed 15 kg (even despite assurances from sellers or forums that drywall can withstand 50 kg);
  • The plasterboard sheet is securely fixed to the base wall.

If the wall and drywall meet all these requirements, you can begin attaching the shelf. However, you need to take into account that ordinary nails GVL sheet won't stand it. Anchor bolts or a butterfly dowel with screws will come to the rescue.

Instructions for installing a heavy shelf on a wall with gypsum plasterboard

By exerting pressure with its weight on the gypsum fiber sheet, the shelf can gradually destroy the structure of the sheet. Therefore, installing a heavy shelf on drywall is not so simple. There are several ways to proceed. If a butterfly dowel is used, the algorithm of actions is as follows:

  • You need to mark the wall on how the future shelf will be fixed;
  • The holes are drilled with a drill, but you need to drill not only the drywall itself, but also the profile;

  • To fasten the shelf, a butterfly dowel is used - it is inserted into the resulting hole, and then a screw is screwed into it;
  • The screw does not need to be tightened too much.

Another option for attaching a heavy object to a gypsum board wall is to use anchor bolts. In this case, the shelf is not mounted on a “layer” of plasterboard, but with anchor bolts reaching directly to the wall of the room. In this case, you can hang the shelf directly on the anchor bolt, or equip it with a bracket.

In general, hanging a shelf on drywall is quite difficult, but the right approach to the point - perhaps. A competently carried out work process using the necessary and high-quality materials is the secret to the success of professionals.

Despite the fact that drywall is one of the most sought-after and popular materials, it is quite delicate, and some impacts can negatively affect its shape and integrity. Such impacts can safely include the installation of shelves - the larger and heavier they are, the greater the chance of getting a damaged plasterboard partition (large cracks may appear or the integrity of the entire structure may be compromised). This can significantly degrade the appearance of your room and the design of the apartment as a whole.

Drywall shelves - improving skills

Is it possible to hang shelves on drywall? It's possible, just be careful. According to novice builders, it is generally better not to hang anything on plasterboard walls and partitions - the “fragile” material will quickly break and become unusable. Professionals have a different opinion - with the help of simple manipulations you can significantly strengthen a plasterboard wall.

Now let’s try to figure out the most popular questions on this topic, but all we need from you is attention and good memory, in order to remember all professional techniques.

Hanging light shelves

Let's start with the fact that you can attach a shelf that is small in size and weight to drywall using special dowels. You will find such fasteners under the name umbrella dowel and butterfly dowel, which are created specifically for attaching various objects to drywall.

The question immediately arises, which ones to choose? In any hardware store a competent sales consultant will quickly help you decide on a purchase; for this you need to tell him the parameters and approximate weight an object attached to the drywall (shelf, cabinet, picture, etc.).

The principle of operation of such dowels is simple - when screwed into the wall, the dowel head begins to open, thereby forming an excellent stop and taking most of the load on itself. When purchasing, the main thing is to choose the right set - the screw should be slightly longer than the dowel (about 1-1.2 cm).

How to hang a shelf on a plasterboard wall? Let's try to consider the entire installation process in detail:

  • 2 holes are drilled in the wall (working surface), suitable for diameter dowels;
  • Dowels are inserted into the resulting holes and brackets (hooks) for the shelf are mounted on screws;
  • The shelf itself is hung.

In principle, with light shelves everything is quite simple - then it will become more complicated and interesting.

Attention! If you are new to the construction business, then exercise extreme care and caution when working - even such a seemingly simple task can cause a lot of headaches.

Hanging a heavy shelf

If you are unable to secure a heavy shelf (picture, cabinet, etc.) using the above-mentioned method, due to the fact that the heavy product simply crumbles the drywall, then there is another way. It involves fixing a shelf to plasterboard by mounting it to a metal frame using special fasteners.

How to hang a shelf on a plasterboard wall if it is heavy? The following list of works must be completed:

Installation sequence of the Butterfly dowel

  • Holes are drilled in measured places, not only through the drywall, but also through the profile;
  • The next step is to insert the butterfly dowel into the finished holes and tighten the screw with the fastener attached to it;
  • The screws should not be tightened too much - the main thing is that the wall can withstand not only the weight of the shelf, but also the pressure as a whole.

Hanging shelves - secrets of home craftsmen

Among the great variety of home craftsmen, there are real “nuggets” of the old school who are skeptical about new construction methods, preferring to trust own experience and skill.

And it cannot be said that they are doing it wrong - many installation methods have proven to be effective and quite convenient, with the help of which you can significantly improve and strengthen the plasterboard structure. Let's try to understand this “construction cocktail” and try to find the answer to the question - how to hang shelves on drywall with your own hands?

If in the room where you want to hang a shelf, the walls are lined with plasterboard, then the shelf can be fixed not to the plasterboard, but through it to the wall. Anchor bolts, which builders rarely use, but home craftsmen, on the contrary, often use, will help us with this.

Using anchor bolts, you can securely attach the shelf to the wall. With this method of fastening, you can safely forget about the fact that the shelf may someday come off. Surely this method of fastening from “nuggets” is worthy of respect.

How to do all this? Now let's look at:

  • First, you need to drill working holes in the places where the cabinet, shelf or other accessory will be attached;
  • The next step is to make deep holes in the load-bearing (monolithic wall);
  • Next, we insert the anchor into the holes made and clamp it;
  • What’s interesting is that the anchor bolts themselves can be used as fastenings, or additional brackets can be hung on them.

In addition to anchor bolts, many “self-taught inventors” use dowels. Using this fastener, you can safely hang a lamp, a shelf, or even a small hanger on a plasterboard wall.

But there is one significant “but” - to fasten even a light shelf, it is necessary that the drywall is simply glued to the wall, and not held on the frame. Otherwise, Driva will not reach the wall and will be useless.

Advice! When working with fasteners to plasterboard surface you should be extremely careful - incorrect markings or poorly selected dowels can take you back several stages of work, which in itself can result in a colossal loss of time.

As for the cost of this issue, it all depends on the method you chose - if you decide to hang a light shelf on two “butterflies”, then the price of the issue will be 40-50 rubles.

That, in principle, is all a novice owner needs to know. If you have any questions, photo and video instructions are presented to your attention on our website. Good luck!

After leveling the walls in the children's room, a beautiful plasterboard is created in the office. Smooth surface. At proper finishing a unique design appears on the wall. In the children's room, in the corner, you need to hang a shelf for toys, but at such a height that the baby himself can reach his favorite things. And in the office you just need a shelf for books that are constantly needed (a cookbook, everything about electricity, your favorite pet). In the bathroom, tiled, there is a need for a shelf for creams, scrubs, masks. In this case, the wall must withstand the weight and not collapse along with the furniture and things.

The shelf on the plasterboard wall must be firmly fixed

Attaching a shelf to a plasterboard surface is not a difficult process. You just need to calculate the weight of the shelf, the objects on it and choose the right fasteners. There are three options for attaching shelves that are worth considering in detail:

  • Glue - you can glue the shelf light weight, which will serve as a decorative element. This could be a shelf with a figurine of “Venus”, with a small beautiful picture;
  • Dowel-nails - the shelf can be made of lightweight material. You can put car and apartment keys on it, mobile phone and other light necessities;

    The adhesive for mounting the shelf on drywall must be transparent.

  • Expansion dowels – each fastener is made to withstand a certain weight. Here you should study very carefully specifications dowels;
  • Mortgage – by using this option, a child can stand on the shelf and nothing will happen.
  • It is worth noting that gypsum board has one disadvantage despite all its advantages - fragility. You can bypass the minus surface different ways, which depend on two parameters:

    It is from these parameters that you need to start when performing work on installing shelves.

    Step-by-step instructions: how to hang a shelf on a plasterboard wall?

    This method is suitable for small shelves for photo frames. This is the easiest way and you can do it like this:

    After this, you can release the shelf, but you shouldn’t immediately load it even with photo frames. Let the glue set thoroughly and harden. Mostly this requires at least 7 hours.

    This method has the advantage that there is no dust or debris when mounting the item. No power tools required.

    Installation is quick, the main thing is to be careful that the glue is not all over the wall and the surface of the shelf. Once dry, there is a gloss that will shine when applied to stains.

    Fastening the shelf with dowel nails

    This method is applicable if the load on the shelf is small, but at the same time, fastening with glue is not suitable. Fasteners are selected based on the location of the structure:

    • The plasterboard wall has a wooden frame.
    • A gypsum board wall contains metal elements.
    • The surface was leveled with plasterboard using a frameless method.

    Depending on the weight of the shelf, applicable different types dowels

    Attention! The length of the fastener must be such as to pass through the shelf material, drywall, frame and be firmly fixed in it. For example, if the wall is made of one layer of plasterboard on metal frame, fasteners must be 35 mm long.

    Installation algorithm:

    After installation, the shelf can be used depending on its purpose.

    Mounting on expansion dowel

    This type of fastening is used if the shelf is heavy enough that ordinary screws will not support it. Special drop-down butterfly fasteners are easy to buy; they can be found in any hardware store. Hang heavy shelf on drywall using dowels will not be difficult.

    Installation technology:

    Advice! The screws are screwed in with a screwdriver, but not completely. The final screwing must be done with a Phillips screwdriver, with a little force.

    Each dowel is designed for a specific weight. This importance should not be overlooked. If the “butterfly” can withstand up to 15 kg, then KNAUF Hartmut - up to 55 kg. Price policy varies depending on the purpose of the dowel, its material of manufacture, as well as the manufacturer.

This article is about how to hang a shelf on a drywall wall. In it we will analyze several solutions of varying complexity: for light shelves and for massive wall furniture. So, let's go.

With all the undoubted advantages of gypsum board, it has several... let's say - features that make it difficult to install wall-mounted furniture:

  • Low strength with respect to bending deformation loads. The sheet simply breaks under any significant load, the vector of which is directed perpendicular to its axis;

  • A loose core in which self-tapping screws hold weakly and nails do not hold at all;
  • Weak adhesion of the core to the kraft paper shell, which precludes adhesive installation of planks under wall-mounted furniture.

Solutions

Despite all these difficulties, the problem has a solution - and not just one.

The video in this article will allow you to learn even more about how to hang a shelf on a drywall wall.

Drywall dowels

How to hang shelves on a plasterboard wall if they are light in weight and will not be loaded during operation? The type of fastener we need is called a gypsum board dowel.

You can find two varieties of it on sale:

Image Description

The snail dowel (also known as the Driva dowel) is not driven into a hole drilled in the gypsum core, but is screwed into it. By cutting a thread in a loose core, a plastic or light alloy dowel is held quite securely in it and can withstand a load of up to 2-3 kilograms.

When the screw is screwed in, the butterfly dowel folds and forms a support platform on the back side of the gypsum board, distributing the load over a large area. The fastener can withstand forces of up to 7-10 kgf.

Note: a butterfly dowel requires free space on the back side of the sheet, which means installing drywall on a frame or sheathing. For walls lined with plasterboard using adhesive installation, it is unsuitable.

Anchor Molly

How to fix shelves on a plasterboard wall if they are supposed to be used for storing books or souvenirs?

Using the so-called Molly anchor. The structure of the product will seem familiar to you: it strongly resembles a butterfly dowel. The only difference is that this type of fastener is all-metal and is designed for heavy loads.

When you tighten the anchor bolt, its shell opens and presses against the back of the gypsum board.

Note: the head of the fastener must be held with pliers, pliers or any other tool. The fact is that when the bolt is tightened, it can turn, crumbling the drywall around the attachment point.

Self-tapping screws in profile

Another way to secure a shelf or light hanging furniture is to use ordinary self-tapping screws, but screw them not into the plasterboard, but into the profiles of the frame or sheathing (see Installing a frame under drywall on a wall with your own hands). To find them, use a magnet.

The obvious drawback of the method is that the attachment points cannot be located in arbitrary places: the standard step between profiles when assembling the frame is 60 centimeters. It is related to the width of the gypsum board (120 cm): if the width is a multiple of the pitch of the sheathing or frame, the edges of the sheet will fall exactly on the center of the profiles.

Long anchors

This method involves fastening furniture not to a false gypsum plasterboard wall, but to a main wall hidden behind the sheathing, or with plasterboard mounted on glue. The anchors are driven into it through a hole in the trim and tightened.

The advantage of the method is the almost unlimited weight of wall-mounted furniture: for example, a high-strength anchor with a diameter of 10 mm, buried 40 mm into the wall, can withstand a shear load of up to 980 kgf. The disadvantage is that this method of fastening is not suitable for light plasterboard partitions.

Wooden mortgages

Wooden or plywood inserts are installed in the frame plasterboard wall at the installation stage. Here are some examples of installing mortgages.

Mortgages for kitchen cabinets Mortgages for bookshelves Embedment made of thick plywood for mounting a water heater on the bathroom wall

A few basic rules for installing mortgages with your own hands:

  1. They must have the maximum area. How larger area, the lower the specific load on the gypsum board;
  2. They should be pressed tightly against the drywall on the side where the hanging furniture is installed. The instructions are quite obvious: otherwise the lining of the frame will simply be pressed through;
  3. The mortgages must be securely fixed (best of all - glued to the back side of the gypsum board using liquid nails, silicone sealant or any universal glue).

Shelves and niches made of gypsum plasterboard

Finally, another solution to the problem is to make shelves and niches directly in the wall, using the same profiles and drywall. And here we will show the reader a few examples.

Frame plasterboard construction with built-in niches and shelves A niche for a TV and semicircular shelves at the stage of framing the frame If you use a flexible arched profile, plasterboard shelves on the wall can have an arbitrarily complex shape Combined solution: glass shelves in plasterboard niches

Conclusion

As you can see, there are many ways to attach wall-mounted furniture. Good luck!

Ten years ago, there were few places where you could find an apartment or house with plasterboard walls, but now it’s difficult to find housing without them. Redevelopment or construction of new partitions - gypsum plasterboard is best suited for this. Naturally, the question arises of how to hang anything on drywall, be it a cabinet or shelf, a TV, a picture or any other element. interior decoration. This is exactly what this article will be about.

What can drywall withstand?

If the wall is sheathed standard sheet The gypsum board is 12.5 mm thick, and the frame is standard with a rack installation step of 600 mm, then you can expect that the fastening at one point can withstand up to 50 kg of load. It is assumed that this is a constant load, without any permanent vibrations or deformations.

With multi-point fastening, the same 12.5 mm drywall can withstand up to 50 kg/m. sq. In reality, this means that you can hang a shelf on plasterboard or a wall cabinet with two mounts spaced a meter apart for a total load of up to 80 kg. The weight of the shelf itself and everything that can be placed on it is taken into account.

Mounting the TV on a special holder involves mounting at 3-4 points, but at the same time they are located close to each other, so the total load still does not exceed 50-60 kg. Taking into account the load when turning and positioning the TV, the weight of the entire structure should not exceed 40 kg.

To secure indoor unit air conditioner, you cannot do without preliminary strengthening of the frame under the plasterboard, otherwise you must first secure the frame base in which the fastenings distribute the load into at least two square meters, and then attach the block to it. All this is explained by the presence of vibration during operation of the air conditioner.

What to fasten with what, what kind of hardware is used

For drywall, special fastenings have been developed taking into account the thickness of the material. Under no circumstances should you use ordinary dowels or chops, which would push the material in the hole. Let's first look at an example of how to hang a cabinet on drywall. It most often has two fastenings at the edges top edge in the form of ears that cling to a pin in the wall or are screwed with a bolt or self-tapping screw with a press washer.

Two types of fastening can be used:

  • Molly metal dowel;

  • Plastic dowel TNF*W “Butterfly”.

They have a wide edge outside, or a puck. WITH reverse side, which is inserted into a hole in the wall, there is an expanding part; when a bolt or screw is screwed in, the outermost part of the dowel is pressed against the sheet and bends the consoles to the sides. The result is tight contact around the hole.

The force on the fulcrum should be directed strictly downward; any lateral directions will contribute to the destruction of the plaster and weakening of the fastening. Before hanging the boxes on drywall, you should check that the fastenings will in no way touch the communications laid in the wall. Because even though the dowels themselves may not ultimately reach, for example, the corrugation in which the power cables are laid, when drilling holes it is quite possible to damage them.

The procedure is simple:

  1. At the required mounting height, a horizontal line is marked strictly level.
  2. The positions of the attachment points are marked.
  3. Two holes are drilled for the corresponding dowels.
  4. A dowel is inserted and a self-tapping screw with a hook at the end is screwed into it or a clamping bolt is tightened. Finally, screw the fastener all the way in so that the hook points upward.
  5. The cabinet is hung on the brackets.

What is important to remember when performing work? Firstly, the line for installing the fasteners will be higher than the level of the upper border of the cabinet. Secondly, since the eyelet itself, by which the cabinet is hung, is often pear-shaped, you should measure along the top of this hole. Before hanging the cabinet on drywall, you should check the fastenings so that they do not wobble and sit firmly in place, and the hooks do not turn.

As reinforcement, you can install a 1-1.5 cm thick strip along the bottom border of the cabinet, secured to the drywall with two or three dowels with self-tapping screws.

Installation of decorative shelves, paintings, light lamps

For these purposes, using dowels with a butterfly end does not make sense, but you cannot use a simple self-tapping screw either. In the first case, the fasteners will be too massive, in the second, unreliable. If the self-tapping screw is only screwed into plaster, it will quickly become loose, destroying the material. Even if it hits the profile, sooner or later the fastener will begin to reach.

You should use a special dowel for drywall. It has the shape of a truncated cone and wide-profile threads with a large pitch. The diameter is often up to one centimeter. These dowels are called DRIVA or snail dowels. There may be dowels with or without a drill at the end, metal or nylon.

For drywall, DRIVA nylon dowels with a drill at the end and a length equal to the thickness of the drywall sheets on the wall, no more and no less, are best suited. They have a cross-shaped groove at the end for easy tightening using a Phillips screwdriver.

Work order:

  1. The locations of the fastenings are marked at the central points.
  2. Using a screwdriver and a cue ball with a cross-head bit, screw in the dowel until it stops.
  3. A shelf or other element that needs to be secured is leaned against and a self-tapping screw with a press washer is screwed in.

It all comes down to using only special fasteners for drywall, which are not more expensive than usual, but provide reliable fastening and do not create preconditions for cracking and destruction of the gypsum inside the material. You can hang almost anything on drywall, as long as you take into account its strength and follow simple instructions.
