We make angel eyes for a car ourselves. Step-by-step instructions: how to make DIY angel eyes headlights DIY square angel eyes

If you prepare well, then with your own hands it will not be difficult to repeat step by step the most popular tuning for the appearance of a car - angel eyes on any round headlights, fog and tail lights. Angel eyes are beautiful, spectacular luminous rings that are built into the front light optics of trucks and passenger cars. The angel eyes effect can make a car attractive, original, and memorable.

What it is

To understand the reason for the popularity of tuning optics of this format, you need to know the history of the phenomenon. In 2001, the German automaker BMW demonstrated a new approach to the designation of side lights. The BMW E39 5 Series featured an unusual headlight design in the form of luminous rings along the outer diameter of the reflector. The developers called this design “angel eyes”. Since then, designers and engineers have been tirelessly working on new options to make them shine brighter, more powerful, and more attractive.

Today, BMW specialists have developed xenon “angel eyes” that shine with bright white light.

Varieties of Angel Eyes

The popularity of this type of tuning is facilitated by the variety of types for self-installation. Each type has its pros and cons, each method of unique lighting has its fans and admirers. This section will talk about the possibility of making and installing some types yourself.

Video: Comparison of CCFL vs COB & Dual COB

The main differences between all types are:

  • in design features and installation method;
  • in the configuration and method of igniting light sources;
  • in size and given configuration of the outline shape.

The geometry of angel eyes always follows the contour of the headlight or taillight reflector. That is, the shape can be rectangular, oval, teardrop-shaped or other. All varieties can be grouped into several types:

Let's consider brief description each type.

Gas discharge CCFL

These are the most popular, practical, factory-made models - quite bright, with a uniform glow, consisting of a neon lamp with a cold cathode. But self-assembly kits are mostly made in China, lose in brightness in comparison with other types of glows. The set consists of a thin glass tube, the inside of which is coated with a glow-enhancing composition - a phosphor, a light diffuser and an aluminum foil substrate with a reflector. The tube is filled with a mixture of an inert gas with a small admixture of mercury vapor. This mixture begins to glow when a high voltage current passes through it. To convert standard 12 volt voltage into high voltage of 500 volts and above, a special device is used - an ignition unit. One block is enough to light the paired headlight angel eyes.

When the BMW concern installed this look on its cars, they created a real sensation. But it soon became clear that in terms of glow power, neon angel eyes were inferior to the standard side lighting of competitors, and engineers began to look for ways to increase the brightness of the luminous rings. Basically, the composition of the gases filling the tube changes. The advantages of neon round lamps: a uniform bright glow in the form of a circle, which is wider than the tube itself; cheapness; durability and operability of the design, the tube practically does not heat up when turned on for a long time. There are more disadvantages. Slight delay in flashing when turned on; difficulty in self-installation (they are placed inside the headlights, so you need to remove the glass), frequent burnout of the ignition unit. Still on sale ready-made kits tubes in the form of circles different sizes, and they are popular. Modern technologies instead of fragile glass complex composition To create a glowing gas, it was proposed to use optical fiber, which shines almost worse than a neon tube.

LED SMD

This view is the brightest of all existing types. The design is a dielectric base in the form of a ring - textolite is most often used. Many SMD crystal LEDs are mounted on this board using soldering at close range. This technology involves individually coating each diode with a phosphor. The glow turns out to be bright and discrete, that is, not continuous. Glow dots consists of a large number of simultaneously ignited and clearly visible miniature light sources. These models are directly connected to the vehicle's on-board network. No additional devices are required. This design is also installed inside the optics. Therefore, its main disadvantage is to repeatedly remove the glass and disassemble the headlight in order to eliminate the malfunction. If at least one of the diodes burns out or deteriorates, its functionality can only be restored by replacement. It is quite difficult to do this in artisanal conditions, but it is possible. When the diode goes out, a black gap appears in the glow of the angel's eye, which looks bad. Another problem is strong heating during operation. Therefore, you need to think about cooling. To do this, the board must be inserted into a case made of a material that dissipates heat well. For example, made of aluminum. The following advantages of diode angel eyes compared to gas-discharge lamps can be noted:

  • longer service life;
  • consume less energy;
  • high-quality diodes shine brighter and more intensely;
  • if all diodes are in good condition, the light is distributed evenly across the entire width of the ring;
  • are insensitive to fluctuations in atmospheric temperature outside, as they demonstrate stable operation in the temperature range from minus 40 to plus 100 degrees Celsius;
  • point glow, directional;
  • It is possible to use a light diffuser.

Cluster LED COB

The most uniform glow for angel eyes is provided by diodes mounted using SOV technology. The essence of this innovation is that very small diode crystals are glued with a special, complex adhesive to the dielectric base of a solid LED. They do not have ceramic housings or substrates, so there are much more of them per unit area compared to SMD technology. Accordingly, they are located at a much smaller distance from each other.

On top, all diodes are covered with a common layer of phosphor, which makes the glow uniform and rich, hiding the gaps between the diodes. The failure of even a few crystals will not be noticeable. This technology is very difficult to implement, since the diodes are glued to a layer of glue several microns in size. Moreover, the glue must be applied evenly and in several layers. So far, no one has reproduced this technology at home. This structure cannot be repaired and must be replaced entirely. Cluster types require a stabilizer that is built into their power supply circuit.

LED multicolor RGB

Those who like to play around with light should pay attention to three-color RGB SMD LEDs, designed in the form LED strip. Each socket contains three crystals of blue, green and red. Using a special light controller, you can mix colors in different proportions and get any color. Such models are controlled using a standard RGB controller included in the LED strip kit. In this remote remote control except permanent white, there is a program for controlling color changes according to a preset algorithm. By turning it on, you can enjoy the transfusion different colors, including flashing rings with changing brightness.

Comparison of types in the table

Let's summarize. The comparison results can be summarized in a table indicating the main indicators.

Why are owners of cars with such tuning fined?

Owners of cars in which such tuning is legally included in the vehicle package should not be afraid of claims from law enforcement agencies. Everything here is legal, correct, fair. But when self-installation need to be guided legal acts regulating the lighting of the front and rear of the car. In traffic rules, codes of offenses, government regulations and GOSTs regulating safety requirements for technical condition, angel eyes are not directly mentioned anywhere.

But there is a legal requirement according to which white lights can be used in front of the car (dimensions and headlight lighting), as well as orange color- turn lights. Eyes of other colors are not allowed and will result in a fine.

Therefore, there is no need to install yellow, red, green, purple and other colors in the headlights. We can advise all drivers CAUTION: you need to install angel eyes CORRECTLY, although even this advice does not guarantee problems when passing a technical inspection.

DIY angel eyes: how to make and install

You can install all types of models yourself. For this purpose, ready-made kits are sold in automotive stores. But you need to be careful not to buy a set with large quantity shortcomings. The main guideline is the price. It’s better not to buy cheap ones, because they won’t work for a long time. And to replace them you will have to disassemble the headlights again. It's long, cumbersome, nervous. It’s better to save some money and buy yourself good, expensive, durable ones.

Video: How to make angel lights with your own hands

The main reason why many beginners want to try their hand at making eyes on their own is the lack of money to replace standard expensive optics with optics with built-in angel eyes in the factory. For almost many car models, headlight assemblies with angel eyes can be purchased without any problems. If, of course, you have money. You can independently make only a simplified version of LEDs from transparent plastic or plexiglass. The most advanced car enthusiasts, after much persistence, will be able to make LED SMD eyes. But this is very time-consuming and unprofitable economic point vision, requires extensive knowledge in radio electronics and the ability to masterly handle a soldering iron.

Manufacturing from plexiglass

To make it yourself you need to stock up on:

  • round solid rods of plexiglass or plexiglass, which will act as an optical light guide. We can recommend using curtain leads from GARDINA;
  • for each workpiece two LEDs with a power of 3–5 W (complete with resistors), with a large front angle of light and good brightness;
  • wires;
  • a drill with a disk cutter or a hacksaw for metal;
  • thermotubes;
  • drill with a diameter of 5 mm;
  • nail polish;
  • construction hairdryer;
  • screwdriver, pliers;
  • superglue;
  • insulating tape;
  • sealant.

Diameter of angel eyes for headlights different brands cars are not the same. For example, for the domestic Lada Priora it is necessary to make two pairs of eyes with a diameter of 106 and 115 mm. And for Lada Kalina you only need one pair with a diameter of 116–118 mm. You need to choose some round dishes for this size. required diameter: mug, jar or other container. Step by step order manufacturing is as follows:

The main advantage of making your own angel eyes is the low cost and ease of production. But the brightness will not be enough, and such headlights will only stand out well in the dark. There are acceptable ways to increase brightness:

  • install more powerful and brighter LEDs;
  • glue the foil along the back side of the circle;
  • clean front side with cuts using sandpaper to create a matte surface.

Installation in headlights

This moment is quite difficult, nervous, and responsible. Installation requires removing the glass from each headlight. Most glasses are installed with rubber sealant, which needs to be made soft. In this state it is easily removed. A hair dryer will help soften it. The situation will be worse with a headlight in which the glass is fixed using heat-resistant sealant. This seal will need to be cut and removed in sections. Do-it-yourself inserts are placed along the contour of the reflector. The mounting location is degreased, and then the finished circle is glued to the prepared surface. The glass in the headlight is reinserted and filled with rubber sealant.

The inserted and secured parts must be connected to the vehicle’s on-board network. Options could be:

  • inclusion instead of dimensions;
  • switching on simultaneously with dimensions;
  • switching on simultaneously with DRLs (daytime running lights).

Making from LED strip

Angel eyes made of plexiglass with two diodes cannot serve as a light source, but only serve a decorative role. But models on a strip with LEDs can even be used instead of DRLs, they are so clearly visible during the day.

Important note: you need to pay attention to the markings of the tape, where special places for cutting are indicated

In this case, the sequence of step-by-step instructions is as follows:

  1. Cut circles of the required diameter from plexiglass 4–5 mm thick, which will become the basis for attaching the diode strip and at the same time will serve as light diffusers.
  2. Make notches or cuts on the front side with a hacksaw up to 1 mm deep in the metal.
  3. Cut blanks from Oracal 850 scattering film in the shape of plexiglass circles.
  4. Glue the film circle onto the front side of the plexiglass circle.
  5. Solder soft wires to the terminals of the diode strip of different colors.
  6. Pin diode strip white with the largest number LEDs per 1 linear meter on reverse side circle at a distance of 3 to 5 mm from the surface of the plexiglass.
  7. Make a ring of the same size from thin plexiglass and sand the surface with fine sandpaper.
  8. Place this ring on the front side of the thick ring.
  9. Wrap the ends of the rings with black electrical tape.
  10. Test the brightness of the glow of the manufactured rings from a direct current source.

Installation in car headlights is carried out similarly to the points for installing homemade plexiglass angel eyes.

External tuning of a car is for lovers of exotics. Angel eyes are also exotic. It’s one thing when you buy this novelty with a new car, and it is a standard attachment to the car. And it’s a completely different matter when you risk disassembling a sealed, adjusted headlight that produces normal light. When you can violate all the characteristics. A loosely sealed headlight will fog up, give poor light, and cause oxidation of the contacts. You need to think very carefully so that you don’t regret wasted time, money and bad mood. And vice versa. If you are a fan of improving your car, a fan of doing everything with your own hands, and understand all the subtleties of making and installing angel eyes on your car - you have respect and respect from the first group of drivers.

Angel eyes are installed for various reasons: some drivers want to make the car tuned and modern, others want to indicate the dimensions of the car and make it more recognizable. Whatever your reasons, we will help you figure out how to install angel eyes on your car.

How to install angel eyes?

Have you been wondering for a long time about how to connect angel eyes and install them in the optics of your car? We invite you to review this short installation guide.

  • Regular/standard,
  • "Gentle."

Connecting angel eyes, method No. 1

  1. You disassemble the optics and run the wires into the engine compartment. This can be done using the upper technological slots.
  2. Once the wires have passed through, you need to look under the hood of the car. There, find the two-pin connector for the sidelight.
  3. When you find them, you need to disconnect them.
  4. Next, find the wire that is responsible for the “+” dimensions.

After performing these operations, you need to determine the further type of connection:

  • with side lights,
  • installation of angel eyes to replace the dimensions.
Connecting angel eyes to dimensions Angel eyes to replace side lights
Connect the “+” eye wire to the “male” terminal (the second part of the two-plug block) First, turn off the “native” dimensions of the car
Pre-clean small area wires In a two-pin block, you need to remove the male terminal (separate the wire from the block and thereby disconnect the dimensions)
We connect by soldering or twisting together You need to connect the “+” from the angel eyes to the “male” terminal and connect them.
Insulate pole connection points All connections must be insulated to avoid short circuits
The angel eyes terminal “-” is connected to the car body. The “-” terminal of the angel eyes is allocated for connection to the car body
In order to make the connection, you need to expose a small section of the wire and make a loop at the end and attach it to the body of the machine Same steps as in the first connection option

How to fix angel eyes, method No. 2

This connection method is not called “gentle” for nothing. The name comes from the fact that the eyes will automatically turn off when the high beam headlights are turned on. If you are going to use then this type connections will have a beneficial effect on the process of use, as they will maximize the life of the lighting devices. There are two reasons for this at the same time.

The first is that the temperature of the diodes will be lower when used separately. The second is saving the life of diodes when they are turned off when necessary. When headlights and peepholes operate simultaneously, the latter practically do not stand out against the general background, which means they are useless in in this case.

  • 1. We pass the wires into the engine compartment.
  • 2. Next, after tightening the wires, we look for the pads and disconnect them.
  • 3. In this case, the wire yellow color should be responsible for the “+” dimensions. To connect the AG you need a relay.
  • 4. We fix the relay in the car near the headlights. One relay goes to the right “mudguard”, the other to the left.
  • 5. The yellow wire (“+” size) must be removed from the first part of the two-plug block. Next, connect the “mother” terminal to terminal “87” of the relay.
  • 6. The “+” wires of the AG must be connected to the “30/51” terminal.
  • 7. Connect ground to terminal “86” (complete the connection with the car and its body).
  • 8. We are looking for a relay for the low/high beam (“mud flaps” of the car).
  • 9. Branches are made from both relays to terminal “86”. It is best to make branches with a “mother” terminal.
  • 10. Next, we solder diodes D1 and D2 to both branches. It is important to observe the polarity of the diodes; it can be checked with a tester.
  • 11. Now you can connect the diodes to terminal “85” and the relay.
  • 12. We do the same with the second side.

When turning off the high beam peephole, you can also use an additional brightness control. With it, you can adjust the brightness of the angel eyes when glowing.

Probably every motorist dreams. In this case, the side lights will become similar to those found in the headlights. modern model BMW. You can make absolutely the same spectacular lights with your own hands, fortunately our man has ingenuity and desire. Armed with wire cutters, a metal saw, pliers and other common tools, you can quickly organize everything.

In order to make “angel eyes” with your own hands, you need to find a plexiglass rod and cut four blanks from it. LEDs are attached to them and cuts are cut every 5 mm. Homemade “eyes” are installed instead of standard side lights.

Side lights from BMW

What are "angel eyes"? It turns out that this is just another hobby from, which has not left a single motorist in the world indifferent. But you shouldn’t sell your favorite “six” just because of the unique and original lights and save up for a BMW. How do you think?

You can do it differently. Take the side lights of this manufacturer as a sample and try to build something similar yourself.

It is worth immediately noting that, no matter how beautifully and effectively these components are made, they are not welcomed by the traffic police and can arouse “unhealthy” interest among the latter. But still, if you decide to go for it and become the owner of a car with such “angel eyes”, you should preferably have a car with round front optics. For example, a VAZ 2106 or a VAZ 21213 has such optics. In addition, it could be any foreign car model, for example, the same BMW, only an older version.

Getting ready

Before, you need to arm yourself with tools and necessary material. As mentioned above, you must have wire cutters, pliers, a metal cutter, a file, a drill and a drill bit. the right size, soldering iron or hair dryer. Also important is a special transparent rod made of plexiglass or plastic that would withstand high temperature. Where can I find it? Auto-tuning experts advise looking for such a rod in stores that specialize in selling curtains and blinds. In addition, do not forget to take care of the presence of a large flat container for a plastic rod, a round can, electrical tape, one-volt LEDs (there should be 8 of them), 220 Ohm resistors and wires with connectors.

All of the above materials and tools will not be difficult to find and prepare. It is important to remember that the wells in the headlights come in different diameters, which means that our “angel eyes” must also be of different circumferences.

For the rod you will have to choose the desired length, although a piece of thin hose will also work as a measurement (we use it to trace the circumference of the car headlight). We cut the rod to the required length and heat it in the prepared container with a soldering iron or hair dryer until it becomes soft. If the rod is made of plexiglass, then place it in a container with hot water so that it becomes soft.

Now you need to take the pliers and remove the workpiece. We wrap the preparation around a coffee can or something else and wait until it cools down (photo below).

If you don’t find a jar, you can use a plate instead. In this case it will look like this:

To make small angel eyes, you need to wrap a rod around a jar lid. The smaller the workpiece, the more difficult it is to work with. Be careful not to burn your fingers.

Now we are working on the blank, from which, after cooling on the jar, we get a ring. You should drill a kind of niche at the ends of each workpiece where the LED will be installed. You need to drill very carefully, preferably at a low speed of rotation of the drill, since the walls of the twig are very thin.

In the video - do-it-yourself “angel eyes”:

Next, along its outer side you will need to cut out a couple of dozen lines with a hacksaw or drill, but no deeper than a third of the circumference. This is done so that the light from our “angel eyes” turns out to be radiant.

Now we need to fix the diodes. You can do this as you like, but you should take into account the high coefficient of thermal expansion of the plexiglass rod. This means that the “eyes” need to leave a little free space in a niche. We take and solder resistors to the legs of the LEDs. Two diodes must be prepared.

This is what we end up with:

We go further and solder the LEDs to the side lamp, remembering that you need to solder to the “plus”. Under no circumstances should the polarity be reversed. And all connections must be insulated with tape specially designed for this purpose. Then check how everything works.

Now it's time to dismantle the headlight glasses. Unfortunately, there is no way without this. We then take it out and be sure to plug the holes. We install the prepared diodes on top so that they are less conspicuous.

In conclusion, I would like to note that this is a responsible matter. Supplementing a car with homemade parts is, of course, good, but you need to do it very carefully so as not to confuse anything, and this is especially true for elements and parts related to electricity.

To better understand how to make “angel eyes” on your car’s headlights with your own hands, we recommend watching this video:

We hope that the article will help you and everything will work out for you!

Are you concerned about the question of how to do headlight tuning on your car yourself? One of the most popular ways to add individuality to car optics is to make your own angel eyes. On the roads you can often see cars with headlights surrounded by luminous rings. These are the so-called “angel eyes”, a famous invention of BMW designers. Original angel eyes are made from four ring-shaped neon tubes that are placed inside the headlight.

The mechanism also includes an ignition unit. Angel eyes installed in car optics give a bright, beautiful glow. The eyes can be used as DRL daytime running lights or as markers. In addition, they can be installed on any car and in any headlights. They can be of different diameters and sizes and have many different glow colors. Thanks to them, your car will become more stylish and even more noticeable on the road.

Naturally, you can buy ready-made headlights with angel eyes and not bother with self-production and installation. But in other way, self-creation beautiful tuning of headlights is also not difficult - it’s simple and quick way decorate your car. Alternatively, such eyes can be made for almost any car, for example cars of the family VAZ or Priora. Believe me, making angel eyes with your own hands is not that difficult!

How to make LED angel eyes with your own hands

Dimensions for headlights can be easily made from transparent plastic sticks. The rings will be secured using conventional sealant. LEDs can be used as elements that will glow. LED angel eyes are easy to make at home. One ring requires two LEDs. In addition, resistors will come into play - 2 KOhm. Shape the plastic stick into a ring.

This can be done easily with the help of some round object.

For example, a jar, its size is selected depending on the size of the ring that will need to be obtained in the end. To give the stick the shape of a ring, it needs to be heated; this can be done in the oven or using a regular hair dryer. After the plastic stick is heated, it must be screwed onto the jar. This should be done very neat. As a result, we will get four rings. If the rings come out uneven, and the ends do not want to be located opposite each other, then you need to heat the ring again and make it completely even.

Next we need LEDs. Let's measure their length and diameter, and drill holes in both ends of the ring tube to their size. The legs of the diodes should be shortened so that their length is no more than 5 mm from the semiconductor body. Next, you should solder the “legs” from the diodes to each other. The minus must be soldered to the minus, the plus to the plus. The leg with the plus sign is located in a wider thickening. The next step is to solder the wires to the legs. It is recommended to take colored ones so that you can easily determine their polarity later.

Further at a distance of 10-15 cm cut off the wire, then you need to solder the ballast resistor to the wire. Solder the wire to the second “leg” of the resistor. Use clear nail polish to secure the diodes. One drop of varnish is enough to drip onto each end. Then we leave the varnish and wait until it dries. The varnish is needed in order to completely fix the diodes; it will fill all the pores, ensuring absolute contact between the plastic stick and the diode. With absolute contact, the light will spread much more evenly.

Some of the most popular car lamps when replacing burnt ones are. Read our article about the possibility of replacing such lamps with LED lamps with a longer service life.

Eyelash effect

Many, making your own angel eyes, want to give them beautiful effect eyelashes To do this, you need to make notches along the entire length of the ring. The notches are made at a distance of 1 centimeter from each other. The depth of the notch should be about 0.5 cm.

Installation of angel eyes

All that remains is to place the angel eyes in the headlight. We disassemble it and remove the glass. Installation of angel eyes - a big problem, because you need to disassemble the headlight without damage. Final assembly must be carried out especially carefully. Using cotton swabs, remove accumulated debris from the surface of the reflector.

In the process of making angel eyes with your own hands, you should not touch the surface of the reflector; you cannot use chemical compounds to treat it, otherwise the surface of the reflective layer may be damaged. You need to apply sealant to the glass and then install the ring. We install the ring so that the LEDs are located at the top. We lay the wires in the hollow of the headlight.

The notches on the ring should point outward and not toward the lamp. Let's apply silicone between the glass and the headlight. Carefully close all pores. The sealant dries for half an hour. After it dries, you need to turn on the headlights and evaluate the result. Let's connect power to the angel eyes. Place the headlights in place, attach the wires to the headlight wiring harness, and carefully hide them under the hood. We disconnect the plug of the wires from the markers and turn signals. We will connect the so-called “Dads” of the dimensions and turn signals to each other and connect them to the “Mother” of the turn signals. The “mother” of the dimensions will be freed, and we will connect the “plus” from the peepholes to it. We will place our “minus” under the mounts for the turn signals.

The moment has come when, when we turn on the dimensions, we will see angel eyes that we made with our own hands. Now you know how to make angel eyes yourself.

Bi-xenon lenses with angel eyes

Experts and car enthusiasts have long known that the benefits of xenon light are best manifested when there are lenses on the car. In addition, the car enthusiast and his car are guaranteed comfortable and safe driving with bi-xenon lenses.

Such lenses will help avoid dazzling oncoming cars and ensure the formation of the correct beam of light.

Bi-xenon lenses with angel eyes look the most impressive, stylish and modern. These lenses are suitable for all types of car lamp sockets. Installation in a regular base is provided and there is no need to cut the reflector. Often, installation requires just removing the outer glass of the headlight and placing the lens there.

Angel Eyes today

Angel eyes are an element of car tuning that never ceases to please car enthusiasts. If body kits, interior tuning, spoilers in various configurations can become boring and “boring” over time, then alternative optics are a pleasant exception. In the early 2000s, the first cars with this tuning element just began to appear on the roads, and very soon angel eyes began to have more and more fans. The reasons are clear. After all, this is not just a beautiful accessory, they are also an excellent means of ensuring traffic safety.

Conventional optics, especially high beams, although visible on the roads from afar, blind oncoming cars, often creating serious discomfort. This alternative optics copes 100% with all the assigned tasks, but does not cause any discomfort to other drivers. There is another advantage of angel eyes - this low electricity consumption. All this and, of course, aesthetic characteristics generate huge demand among consumers for this type of tuning.

Angel eyes (luminous rings) - as one of the car tuning options, were first demonstrated by the German concern BMW in 2001. The know-how immediately gained worldwide popularity, which has not declined to this day, and owners of other car brands began to seriously think about how to assemble angel eyes with their own hands. Fortunately, with the development of bright white LEDs, they have a real opportunity to tune headlights even at home. Of course, it is unlikely that it will be possible to surpass the result of German engineers from BMW, but every car enthusiast can make something similar.

3 assembly options

It’s not difficult to make angel eyes for your favorite car with your own hands. In addition, you can find on the Internet a large number of technical solutions of varying complexity. We will dwell on some of them in more detail.

To implement the first project you will need:

  • white LEDs 5 mm – 2 pcs.;
  • resistor type MLT-330 Ohm-0.25 W – 1 pc.;
  • connecting wires;
  • a transparent rod made of plastic or plexiglass with a diameter of 8–10 mm;
  • as well as auxiliary materials and tools: glass jar, drill, hair dryer, soldering iron.

First, you need to make recesses for the LEDs at both ends of the rod. To do this, it is wrapped in cloth or polyethylene (so as not to be scratched) and clamped in a yew. Using a drill, holes are drilled with a diameter of 6 mm and a depth of up to 10 mm.
Now the rod needs to be shaped into a ring. To do this, you will need a can, going around which you will get a ring with a diameter equal to the internal diameter of the headlight. The rod is heated over a hair dryer, and while it is plastic, it is bent around the can.
The next stage is the installation of light-emitting diodes. To do this, wires of such length are soldered to their terminals that it is enough to lead them outside the headlight. A resistor is soldered onto one of the wires, after which the circuit is assembled so that it turns out electrical circuit of series-connected LEDs and a resistor. Then the LEDs are inserted into the holes of the workpiece and fixed with superglue.
On final stage Shallow notches are made every 1 cm along the entire length of the rod. This will slightly improve the optical properties homemade design.
But it is fair to note that this type of angel eyes is decorative option and they will not be able to perform the function due to insufficient brightness of the glow.

The second option for assembling luminous rings is no less original and is based on the use of LED strip. To implement it you will need:

  • white LED strip type SMD 3528 double density without silicone coating (30-40 cm per headlight);
  • connecting wires;
  • transparent silicone;
  • silver nail polish;
  • Super glue.

This wonderful property LED strip's flexibility allows you to easily make a ring of any diameter out of it. Therefore, the first step is to measure the internal diameter of the headlight and cut a piece of tape to the appropriate length. After this, at one end of the segment you need to clean the contact pads and solder wires to them for subsequent connection to +12 V.

At the second stage, the prepared segment is placed with the LEDs up on flat surface, take transparent silicone and, slowly pressing on the tube ( mounting gun), squeeze out a strip of gel along the entire length of the tape. As a result, the tape is coated with an even layer of silicone, after which it is left to dry completely. In the resulting workpiece, the transparent sealant acts as a light guide, uniformly dispersing the light emitted by the LEDs. If the workpiece is rolled into a ring (with the sealant inward) and turned on in complete darkness, you will be able to observe the effect of a glowing neon tube. So that after installing the tape inside the headlight, the emitted light does not illuminate the surface of the reflector, but is directed outward, you need to paint over inner side silicone light guide with silver varnish. In this case, the varnish will play the role of a reflector.

The third and easiest way to solve this is to buy ready-made rings on AliExpress. Fortunately for those who do not want to assemble angel eyes with their own hands, the Chinese market offers a choice of lamp and LED models for different car brands. In this case, it is better to pay attention to time-tested CCFL rings. They continue to be more reliable than their LED counterparts.
It is also worth noting that cheap angel eyes from AliExpress are characterized by low quality installed LEDs, which overheat when working simultaneously with headlights and, as a result, lose brightness during the first year of operation.

Installation of angel eyes

After making or purchasing a set of glowing eyes, they need to be installed in the headlights. The installation process itself does not depend on the make of the car and on what kind of eyes are available: homemade LED or purchased CCFL tubes. The main thing is to be able to carefully disassemble and reassemble the headlights. To carry out the work you will need:

  • construction hair dryer;
  • transparent two-component glue;
  • a set of screwdrivers and other tools.

The first step is to dismantle the headlights. Any general rules in this case, no, since each machine has design features and requires an individual approach. After dismantling, you should carefully inspect the headlight for the presence of latches at the junction of the two parts. Then it is placed on the table and for several minutes the seam area around the entire perimeter is heated with a hairdryer to warm up the sealant there. Only after this they start unpacking. It is better to do this work together, when one person holds the body and heats the seam with a hairdryer, and the second person gradually divides it into two parts.

You need to wear gloves when working with a disassembled headlight to avoid leaving fingerprints on the reflector.

Having separated the inner mask with the reflector from the glass, you can begin installing the first luminous eye. To do this, apply it to the mask and determine the location of the wires. Apply glue to the degreased surface of the ring, press it against the reflector and leave until completely dry. Glue the second ring in the same way. The headlight is assembled in the reverse order, heating the seam with a hairdryer and pressing the glass tightly against the body.

note that this instruction is general and only suitable for certain types of headlights. Therefore, in each specific case it is necessary to take into account design features car.

Connecting Angel Eyes

Angel eyes are additional device vehicle (vehicle) lighting and inherently fall within the requirements for daytime running lights (DRL). In accordance with clause 6.19.7 of GOST R 41.48-2004, running lights must turn on when the engine starts and turn off when it stops. In addition, turning on the headlights should lead to the DRLs turning off, so connecting the angel eyes must be done in accordance with a certain one. It follows that the connection of angel eyes according to all the rules can be realized through a five-pin relay or through the DRL control unit.

To implement the first option, you will need female terminals (4 pcs.) and a 5-pin relay, the connection diagram of which is shown in the figure.
As can be seen from the diagram, the negative wire from the angel eyes is connected to the car body, and the positive terminal is soldered and connected to contact No. 30 of the relay. Then, under the hood, they find a wire connecting the side lights to the switch and run another wire with a terminal parallel to it, putting it on contact No. 85. Another long wire will run from the “Ignition + 12V” terminal block to contact No. 87a. The last one to connect contact No. 86 to the car body. During the connection process, all terminals, including unused terminal No. 87, are insulated using heat shrink tubing.

If an ignition unit (current stabilizer with LED rings) is supplied complete with CCFL rings, then it should be connected between the 30th pin of the relay and the eyes. In general, any LED DRLs must be operated together with a current or voltage stabilizer (for LED strips) to avoid the influence of voltage surges in the 12 V on-board network.

The second option involves connecting angel eyes through a DRL control unit (DRL controller), which can be purchased at any auto store. In this case, assembly is carried out in accordance with the diagram given in the instructions for the product. The use of industrially produced DRL control units is the best option for connecting angel eyes, as it is easy to assemble, provides overload protection and guarantees long-term, safe operation.

A couple of important points

A car is a vehicle technical condition which must comply with certain standards and norms. This means that any change in design requires prior technical expertise. If you follow the letter of the law, then the car owner must contact a specialized organization with an application “to make changes to the vehicle’s light signaling device.” The expert will conduct an examination and give an opinion on the vehicle’s compliance with the requirements of the Technical Regulations. A simple procedure at first glance has one significant drawback: the minimum cost of services is 5 thousand rubles.

Not wanting to pay such a sum, many drivers continue to tune their car themselves, thereby violating Art. 12.5 Code of Administrative Offences. According to the article, every driver who independently installs angel eyes risks receiving a warning or a fine of 500 rubles. An exception is the installation of lamps emitting red light in front of the car, for which a penalty is imposed in the form of deprivation of rights for a period of 4 to 6 months.
