Ryazan regional universal science Library named after Gorky was opened in 1858. Then it was called the Ryazan Public Library. Initially, the library was located in the apartment of the merchant Solovyova. At that time, its collections included 609 books in 1275 volumes and 4300 periodicals.

Currently, the library is a major educational, cultural, scientific and methodological center. It works using modern information technologies. Its collections contain over 1 million copies of books. Every year the library serves more than 50 thousand people, and the total number of visits is 320 thousand. The library employs 158 people. In 2011, a new library building was built.

Reading in the library premises was free, unlike a “subscription”; the cost of the latter was 6 rubles per year, 4 rubles for six months and 1 ruble for a month. Griboedova 26/6 there is an Information and Educational Center named after. K. G. Paustovsky with departments: the department of subscription and the department of children's literature.
