It is known that it is through the windows that the room gives off almost 40% of the heat. And it’s not even a matter of drafts that seep through the cracks of loosely fitting wooden frames. The glass itself is a conductor of heat, as it transfers it from the inside into the street air with its entire surface. "Folk methods" of insulating windows

Many people believe that in order to keep the house cool through the window openings, it is enough to install plastic windows. When installing PVC windows, their openings are actually insulated with mineral wool and polyurethane foam. Many people do insulation plastic windows do it yourself - insulate with polystyrene foam internal slopes etc. The windows themselves are designed in such a way that they conduct heat to a lesser extent than windows with ordinary glasses. However, what to do if it is not possible to install a double-glazed window?

Wooden windows

Of course, dried out wooden frames should be replaced during repairs. And these may well be plastic windows. But don’t rush to replace high-quality wooden “joinery” just to make the house warmer! You can use a proven method, for example, sealing with foam rubber and sealing window cracks. There are other similar methods, although they all have several common disadvantages (windows cannot be opened in winter, and they need to be cleaned in spring), many still use them.

The fastest and easiest way to quickly and tightly seal window cracks is to fill them with molten paraffin. Heat the paraffin in hot (about 70 degrees) water, put it into a syringe without a needle and pour it into the cracks. There is no need to seal the cracks over paraffin; it does not crumble or fall out.

If you decide to putty your windows, keep in mind that the most handy tool For " window works"is not a construction spatula at all. The most convenient way to do this is with a metal shoe horn. Its semicircular shape allows you to smooth out the putty, remove excess and form an even, smoothed seam.

Warming "inserts":

  • One way to get rid of drafts is to insulate the windows using thick linen cord. Open the window sashes and lay the cord around its entire perimeter. For reliability, secure it with small nails or glue. When the window is closed, the gaps between the sashes will be tightly sealed. The cord can be used for more than one year.

Using a sharp knife or a heated soldering iron, cut the foam into strips slightly wider than the distance between the glass panes in the frame, and lay them along the entire perimeter of the window.   • In old houses where the distance between the frames is quite large, an old blanket is often placed inside. If the frames are located close to each other, place cotton wool, foam rubber, batting or padding polyester between them.

Pastes and putties

  • Old double wooden windows, the frames of which are connected with screws, can be insulated with a paste of chalk, flour wallpaper paste (2:1 ratio) and water or clay and sand (1:2 ratio). Open the doors and tightly fill the recesses along the glass with paste. External cracks are covered in the same way. When you open the window in the spring, the “putty” will fall off on its own.
  • Another recipe for insulating paste from the cold is gypsum-chalk paste (gypsum to chalk ratio 2:1), diluted until soft. On white frames it is almost invisible. You can remove smudges with plain water, and cleaning windows in the spring is just as easy as in the previous case.
  • In the past, when each family subscribed to several daily newspapers, soaked newsprint was often used to seal window frames. The dried paper paste reliably fills the slightest cracks inside and outside the window, and leaves no traces behind. Today, no one will specifically buy newspapers for insulation, however, one should not forget about such a simple and inexpensive way to combat drafts.

After caulking or caulking the external cracks, they are sealed with strips of paper, fabric or paper (painting) tape. It is not recommended to use transparent polyethylene tape - it insulates cracks well, but breaks easily and often falls off. It’s even easier to seal the window cracks with medical adhesive tape. It is not blown through, is not afraid of moisture, and after peeling off it leaves no marks. Paper or fabric strips are glued with starch paste or laundry soap.

Insulation using “Swedish technology”

One of the main disadvantages of the “old-fashioned” methods of preserving heat in the house is that windows sealed in this way cannot be opened until spring.

Work order

Before starting work, the window must be washed. Check how the doors open and close and whether the locks and hinges are jammed. Now remove the window from its hinges and take it to where you will be working on it. Window insulation is best done on the balcony or on staircase, because after work a lot of garbage remains. The doors are insulated both between each other and inside.

  • Remove and, if necessary, grind off any protruding layers of old paint. Typically, these drips prevent the sashes from fitting tightly to the window frame when opening and closing them, which is why it blows from the window.
  • Using a milling cutter, cut grooves of the required depth along the entire contour of the window frame. A tubular hollow seal-insulation, for example “Euro-Strip”, is inserted (rolled) into them. If the work is carried out by specialists called by you, they use the seal whose reliability they have tested in their practice.
  • After the window is insulated, it is installed on the hinges. After this, you need to check again how easily and tightly the window opens and closes and adjust its mechanisms. You may need to replace your window hardware.

"Magic Film"

Many people have heard about insulating plastic windows with film. Heat-saving film is also used to insulate wooden windows. You can do this yourself, since there is nothing complicated in working with film. To do this you will need double sided tape, stationery knife, scissors and an ordinary (non-construction) household hair dryer for compacting the film after gluing. Before installing it, you need to remove the handles from the window.

Windows with heat-saving film pasted

If the film inflates like a sail, there are drafts somewhere inside the frame. You will have to remove it, disassemble the frame, go over it outside and inside along the glass with transparent silicone sealant and repeat the gluing. Torn film can be easily repaired with ordinary stationery tape.

Heat-saving film increases the room temperature by 4-5 degrees and keeps it at a constant level for eight hours. This is one of the simplest, cheapest and effective ways allowing to insulate residential or production room. It is not for nothing that heat-saving film is sometimes called “third glass”.

Work order:

  • Separate the layers of film from each other. In the package it is usually folded in half, that is, if when folded its dimensions are: 3 x 1 m, then when glued it will be 2 x 3 m in size - 6 square meters. m. They disconnect it in the same way as opening ordinary plastic bags - by blowing strongly into its edge. You should not peel the film with a knife, so as not to damage it.
  • On a clean flat surface cut the film taking into account the gluing allowance (overlay on the mounting tape) of at least two centimeters on each side.
  • Apply double-sided mounting tape around the perimeter of the cleaned and degreased window frame.
  • Together with your partner, holding the film suspended, glue it to the tape. If the film wrinkles, it’s okay; later you can smooth it out with a hairdryer. The main thing is that it is attached to the frame around the entire perimeter.
  • In the spring, the film can be removed and a new one can be pasted in the fall. Double-sided tape leaves almost no traces, but if the frame still gets dirty, it can be easily cleaned with alcohol or a special compound (“Antisilicone”). However, if the room has an air conditioner, the insulating film does not need to be removed. In summer, it will help keep the room cool, not warm.

Insulation of slopes

The easiest way to insulate the slopes of windows with plastic or wooden frames is to use plasterboard or ready-made sandwich panels. Insulation with plasterboard panels is carried out as follows:

  1. Cut a groove no more than one centimeter deep around the perimeter of the window. This can be done with a knife, screwdriver or special tools.
  2. Cut the plates the right size from moisture-resistant plasterboard. You can take a regular one, but then you will have to cover it with a moisture-proof primer in several layers and dry it. After this, you can insert the workpieces into the grooves, starting from the side slopes (they will serve as support for the top).
  3. Fill the cavities between the wall and the plates with polyurethane foam, and apply masking tape. Support the upper slope wooden beam or other supports. Once the foam has hardened, both the tape and the supports can be removed. Prime the finished slope and paint or wallpaper it. The seams between the plasterboard slopes and the window frame are filled with acrylic sealant.

Laying insulation in the groove

Insulating slopes with sandwich panels is even easier. Attach a U-shaped profile around the entire perimeter window frame. Since sandwich panels are thicker than drywall, cutting grooves for them, as in the previous case, will not work.

Now cut the slopes of the required size from the sandwich panels and insert them into the fixed profile. The space between the panels and the wall is best filled mineral wool. After this, the mounting F-profile, into which the same sandwich panels or plasterboard plates are installed frontally.

Today, many methods of thermal insulation are known. The choice of one method depends on the type of window.

This time you will learn how to make ordinary wooden windows and modern double-glazed windows warmer. In addition, I will talk about how to insulate openings outside the house with your own hands using inexpensive polystyrene foam.

Thermal insulation of plastic double-glazed windows

High quality made plastic double glazed windows are equipped with special rubber seals, which, due to their tight fit to the frame, prevent the passage of air from outside to inside the room.

Seam sealing

Even after high-quality plastering of the slopes, a micro-gap remains. If this micro-gap is not sealed, it will cause cold air circulation and condensation. As a result, fungus may appear at the junction of the slopes and the frame.

To close the gap you will need the following materials and tools:

  • Sanitary silicone in a tube;
  • Mounting gun for working with sealant;
  • White Spirit;
  • Sharp knife
  • Awl;
  • Paper napkins.

Let's consider the listed stages in more detail:

  • Using the tip of an awl, we widen and level the gap along the entire frame;
  • Wet it paper napkin thinner and thoroughly wipe the joint between the slopes and the frame;
  • We prepare the tube for work, namely, we cut off the plastic tip with a knife, insert it into the gun and screw on the cone of the nozzle;

  • Fill the gap with sealant around the perimeter of the glass unit;

  • If necessary, level the seam and clean the adjacent surfaces from contamination.

Sanitary sealant is completely removed with white spirit within 20 minutes after application. After 20 minutes, the sealant will be very difficult to remove.

Now the most important thing you need to know when filling the gap between the slopes and the frame with sealant.

Typically silicone is applied as follows. A person stands near the window sill, places the tube with a cone to the gap at an angle of 45-60 degrees and guides the tube towards himself.

As a result, the sealant is squeezed out by the worm, and it has to be leveled and smoothed with a finger, after which the adjacent surfaces must be cleaned. Even if you remove the silicone deposits, a layer of several microns will still remain and after a couple of weeks a streak dirty with dust will be visible in this place.

To ensure that the silicone gets into the gap and nowhere else, we apply the cone of the tube at an angle of 45 degrees and move it forward, and not towards ourselves. As a result, the tip of the cone will straighten the seam itself and there will be virtually no contamination on the sides.

For insulation of conventional double-glazed windows or a balcony with panoramic windows Not just any silicone is suitable; in extreme cases, we use sanitary sealants that will not mold later.

Insulating glass with film

Plastic windows at home can be additionally insulated with heat-saving film. No, now I’m not talking about covering frames with tape, that’s of no use here, I mean shrink film, which can be used to create an additional air chamber between the glass and the room.

Did you know that the greatest heat loss is on modern double glazed windows Are they registered not in the frame area, but directly on the glass?

Manufacturers convince us that argon or other inert gases, which are less thermally conductive compared to air, are pumped between the two glasses. But the problem is that the gas layer works for 2-3 years, after which the space between the two glasses becomes airy.

Solving this problem is not difficult, I showed how to do it in the diagram.

Let's look at the stages listed in the diagram in more detail:

  • First, we remove dust and wash the inside of the glass unit from dirt;

The easiest way to clean the junction between the glass and the frame is to remove any accumulated dirt using a stiff toothbrush. Glass can be easily washed away from the most difficult stains by vodka applied from a spray bottle and subsequently collected with a special scraper.

  • After the washed surface has dried, we glue double-sided tape around the perimeter of the frame;
  • Next, trying not to stain it, we cut the thermal film according to the dimensions of the perimeter taped with tape;

  • Gradually remove the protective tape from the tape and glue the film;

  • The surface of the film will be wavy, but it doesn’t matter; we heat it as usual;

  • After the heated film has cooled, the surface will be perfectly smooth like glass.

The use of thermal film cannot be called innovative, since this technology was used back in Soviet times. Then ordinary polyethylene oilcloth with the help of a wooden glazing bead was stuffed onto the window from the outside for the winter.

And what did we get as a result? As a result of this installation, the room was darker than usual and about beautiful views out of the window could be forgotten until spring comes.

The use of special shrink film is completely free of such disadvantages. Again, if earlier with the onset of the warm season the oilcloth was removed from the frames, today this is not at all necessary, since the thermal film is absolutely transparent.

By the way, in summer there is additional air gap between the glass and the film will prevent heat from penetrating into the room.

Thermal film can be installed with equal success on both plastic double-glazed windows and wooden windows. True, in the latter case, the wooden frames will have to be pre-aligned and painted.

  • The sashes and frames are inspected for damage and dirt;
  • The surface is washed, and damage to the wood is eliminated using putty;

  • A special cutter is used to cut a groove around the perimeter of the sash;
  • Sawdust and shavings are blown out of the groove;

  • A special tubular seal is inserted into the groove and rolled with a pressure roller;
  • The gap at the junction of glass and wood is filled with silicone or acrylic;
  • The sashes are placed on the frame, after which assembled structure ready for use.

If the glass in the frames has cracks or small chips, they must be replaced immediately, otherwise the insulation will be of no use.

So now you know what Swedish technology is. The question is, how advisable is it to do the listed work yourself or still order window restoration from specialists?

It would seem that this is a question, because specialists will have to pay, while you can do everything with your own hands for free. But in reality this is not the case, since you will have to buy a router and a pressure roller. The price of such a tool is high and it is unprofitable to buy it to insulate windows just once.

External thermal insulation with polystyrene foam

You can insulate wooden windows with your own hands not only from the inside, but also from the outside. The method that I will now tell you about is the optimal solution for budget thermal insulation of a country house.

To perform thermal insulation you will need the following materials and tools:

  • Extruded polystyrene foam (material that does not absorb water and is almost impermeable to air);
  • Polyurethane foam;
  • Sharp mounting knife;
  • Ruler and marker.

What can be insulated with polystyrene foam? This method will allow you to seal old platbands or finish external slopes without the need for cementation. In addition, carefully executed cladding will certainly decorate the facade of your home.

The instructions for performing thermal insulation are as follows:

  • We measure the width of the slope;

We take into account that the width along the length of the slope on old windows can be different, so we use the largest value.

  • In accordance with the measurements, we cut pieces of polystyrene foam approximately 0.5 m long;

  • We apply polyurethane foam to the slope and attach a polystyrene foam blank;

  • We hold the piece of polystyrene foam for 1-2 minutes until the foam sets a little, and then glue the adjacent sections of the slope in this way;

  • After inner side the slope is pasted over, we carry out similar work on the platband.

Expanded polystyrene, which is shown in the photo report, has a high density and therefore can be used without additional finishing. However, if you decide to plaster your home, foam board trim can also be plastered over a paint grid.

  • the sashes are deformed and are not held tightly to the frame.
  1. Plastic windows

It is mistakenly believed that such windows are quite airtight and therefore do not need insulation. Unfortunately, after a few years the seal collapses, and insulation is indispensable.

There are other reasons why it is necessary to deal with plastic windows:

  • violation of window installation technology;
  • distortion of the window structure due to shrinkage of the house;
  • factory defect of window design;
  • mechanical damage to structural elements.

Types of insulating tapes

The widespread use of tapes for insulating windows is explained by a number of reasons:

  • no annual replacement required;
  • there is no dirt when pasting, since no water is used;
  • no traces of adhesive remain on the frame;
  • there is no diffusion of the adhesive layer with the frame paint.

But this method of insulation also has disadvantages:

  • after gluing, you cannot open the window sashes;
  • Poor-quality or poorly glued tape lags behind the frame in small areas.

IN construction stores They offer two types of tapes, which differ in the installation method.

  1. Pasting


Foam tape with adhesive base

This type of tape has a wide grip. Adhesive composition applied during manufacture (self-adhesive type) or during installation work.

To create self-adhesive tape, polyvinyl chloride, rubber and polyethylene foam (foam rubber) are used.

Due to the plasticity of these materials, the tape is easily compressed to the size of the gap. To ensure that the insulation does not stand out against the background of the window, dyes are added: black, brown, white.

Typically the packaging will indicate the size of the gap that the tape will cover. Popular options with sizes 3 - 7 mm.

The first to be used foam tapes. Their popularity is explained by a number of advantages:

  • high compression ratio;
  • the frame does not collapse in places of insulation;
  • low cost;
  • high protection efficiency.

Such tapes have negative qualities:

  • insufficient efficiency for large gaps;
  • short service life. Effective during one winter season;
  • in cheap models, the adhesive tape does not stick well;
  • low resistance to water.

Important!

It is more convenient to use self-adhesive tapes on foam rubber for insulation.

They stay on the window longer and regulate the degree of pressing of the sashes.

  1. Sealing

Tapes of this type have a hollow tubular shape, which is why heat is retained. The materials chosen are rubber and polyvinyl chloride.

On one side of the tape there is a groove hook or adhesive coating with paper protection.

It is believed that the groove is more resistant to mechanical stress.

The following qualities are considered advantages:

  • gaps up to 0.7 cm are blocked;
  • withstands any temperature changes;
  • It is possible to choose a color to match the color of the frame;
  • the use of the window is not limited;
  • affordable price.

But most of the disadvantages relate to adhesive tapes:

  • not suitable for all window designs;
  • when temperature changes, the adhesive layer is destroyed;
  • with frequent deformations, peeling occurs in the glued places;
  • The foam tape quickly gets wet and dust sticks to it. For this reason, frequent replacements are carried out.

Tubular seals are checked annually. If necessary, individual fragments are replaced.

As a rule, a tape is selected based on three indicators.

Main advantages:

  • low cost;
  • high elasticity, allowing you to close gaps of different sizes.

There are also disadvantages:

  • Due to the porous structure, moisture is quickly absorbed. The drying process takes a very long time;
  • low durability. With prolonged use, the material turns yellow and crumbles.

Unfortunately, such tapes are rarely used for window insulation, as they become more expensive window design up to 15 %.

Self-adhesive tapes are made on the basis of synthetic rubber and have all of its positive traits: elasticity and resistance to temperature fluctuations.

Due to their high elasticity, the tapes are very effective for small gaps. Good insulating qualities. Due to the presence of air in the structure, a thermal insulating environment is created.

Its use is limited to its ability to high temperature turn into a liquid toxic state.

However, only materials from the following brands are in demand:

  • Russia - Profitrast, Economy, Zubr.
  • Germany - KIMTEC, Deventer.
  • Poland - Sanok.

Domestic manufacturers, as a rule, work using European technologies and produce high-quality material no worse than foreign samples. At the same time, German and Polish ribbons, although more expensive, last longer.

Insulating tapes are sold retail and in coils from 6 to 10 meters.

Features of preparing windows for insulation

Preparing a window for insulation with tape is almost no different from preparation for other insulation materials. At the same time, there are some peculiarities.

  1. The frames are washed with soapy water and then dried. The tape requires a dry and grease-free surface.

How to get rid of heat-blowing drafts? How to insulate wooden windows if it blows from the cracks as if there were no windows at all? Of course, you can use the old fashioned method - plug the cracks with soaked newspaper and glue paper on top. But it won't bring much warmth. In addition, in the spring you will have to tear off this paper. And, quite possibly, along with the paint. Of course, if you still plan redecorating, nothing bad will happen. And if not? The frames will still have to be repainted so that they don’t feel embarrassed in front of the guests.

We use foam rubber

A more acceptable method is to fill the cracks with foam rubber (you can use cotton wool), and then glue them with strips of fabric. This is done as follows. Strips of fabric are cut five centimeters wide, moistened, wrung out, and then thoroughly lathered with soap. This method is good because the fabric does not turn yellow over the winter. And in the spring it can be removed very easily without catching the paint. Just wet it warm water.

Pour in paraffin

How else can you insulate wooden windows? Try this method. Take regular paraffin (in other words, a candle), melt it, and then use a syringe to inject it into the cracks. Within an hour, the paraffin will harden, creating an insurmountable barrier to drafts. True, you will have a hard time cleaning your windows in the spring. But believe me, it's worth it!

And the cord will do

An ordinary linen cord may well be suitable as insulation. If the draft comes only through the glass part of the window, replace the old glazing beads. This should help.

As you probably already understood, everything that was listed above are methods that have been proven for decades, which are passed on from mother to daughter, from father to son. Of course, they will help get rid of drafts and keep the house warm. However, this is, whatever one may say, the twenty-first century. This means that new technologies are appearing in all areas, and old ones are being modernized. And to the question: “How to insulate wooden windows?” New answers are already being found.

However, there is one very significant drawback. The pipe profile can only be glued at temperatures above minus ten degrees. In addition, gluing it is not so easy.

As for the material from which the pipe profile is made, it is environmentally friendly. These are foam rubber, polyurethane, polyethylene foam, polyvinyl chloride or rubber. The latter are both self-adhesive and those that need to be glued with glue. From this variety of pipe profiles, we advise you to purchase those made of polyvinyl chloride. They tolerate frost well, practically do not deform or break. But rubber ones are more durable.

What should you do first to save heat in your house or apartment when cold winds blow outside and the temperature begins to steadily slide down? The answer is simple; first of all, it is necessary to resolve the issue of how to insulate windows for the winter.

In fact, insulating windows with your own hands does not require special skills.

One of the cheapest and simple ways insulating windows (one might say the “old-fashioned” method) is sealing windows with strips of paper smeared with paste. It is advisable to caulk the window cracks first. technical wool or foam rubber. If there is nothing suitable at hand, then newspaper paper is torn into small pieces, soaked in water and the resulting mass is used to plug the cracks between the frames. For this work, use a sharp knife with a thin blade, a flat-edged screwdriver, or any other thin, sharp object, even a metal ruler.

Preparation of paste:

  • 2-3 tablespoons of flour or starch;
  • 0.5 cups cold water;
  • 1 cup boiling water

While stirring the flour (starch), gradually pour half a glass of cold water. After the formation of a homogeneous mass, pour in a glass of boiling water in a thin stream.
Don't forget to constantly stir the mixture. Make sure that the thickening paste does not form lumps so that the mass remains homogeneous. If the mixture does not thicken well, it can be heated on the stove (stirring constantly) until bubbles form on the surface of the mixture.
After this, cool the paste by placing the dishes with it in a bowl with cold water. The paste is stored in the refrigerator in a tightly sealed container. But do not forget that every day its adhesive qualities are deteriorating. From practice, the paste keeps well in the refrigerator for 4-5 days.

Warming process:

  • “insulation materials” (medical cotton wool, drying cords or thin foam rubber) are inserted into the frame slots (it is important that they fill the cavities completely);
  • take paper, measure out the required piece, spread it with paste;
  • the product is pressed against the frame, air bubbles are removed, the strip is ironed very carefully with a rag.

In spring, moisten strips of paper with warm water. After 5-10 minutes, the dried paste will swell and the paper can be easily removed. All you have to do is wipe damp cloth frames

Instead of paste you can use regular laundry soap. Moisten it in water and pass it over the paper several times, “rinse” it well. After that, glue it to the window.
The disadvantage of this method is that if the cracks allow a lot of air to pass through, the paper will not hold up for long. By sealing the cracks, the strips of paper will not fall off until spring. In the spring, wet the paper and it can be easily removed from the windows.

Instead of paper strips you can use stripes of light fabric. The technology is similar to the previous method and is as follows:

  • filling frame gaps with the selected material;
  • wetting the fabric with a soap solution for subsequent sealing;
  • gluing strips to insulated areas, removing air from under the fabric surface.

If you don’t want to bother with paste/soap solution, you can seal the windows special sticky paper (paper tape), which is freely sold in retail trade. But keep in mind that if you have old painted windows, removing the specified tape in the spring may leave paint from the windows on it.

Another way to insulate wooden painted windows. Seal all cracks with regular gypsum putty.. It is sold in hardware stores in the form of a white powder.
Dilute the powder with water until the thickness of softened plasticine. It is best to cover cracks by hand, without any tools. Wipe the affected areas with a damp cloth to remove excess putty. On windows painted with white paint, the places where the putty was applied are practically invisible.

In the spring, such windows open easily, but most of the putty falls off. Residues are easily removed.
Throughout the entire cold period, windows covered with putty do not allow cold air to pass through at all and retain heat well.

Another method worth mentioning is Filling window cracks with paraffin. To do this, ordinary candle paraffin was heated in a water bath at a temperature of approximately 65-70 degrees and then this paraffin was poured into the cracks using a similarly heated syringe.

For high-quality and long-term insulation of wooden windows, use silicone sealant. In this case, it is advisable to purchase a lever syringe. A container of sealant is inserted into a lever syringe and by pressing the lever, the required portion of silicone is squeezed out. It is better to use a transparent sealant; if it accidentally gets on the windows, it will be little noticeable.

Warming process:

  • To do this, first remove the frame from its hinges and lay it on a flat surface.
  • Using a sharp knife or a flat screwdriver, remove the glazing beads from the entire perimeter of the frame: lift the wooden glazing beads that hold the glass (as if slightly “tearing it off”), then remove the bottom, side and finally the top beads.
  • After removing the bead, the glass is removed from the frame. It is better to carry out this procedure with cloth gloves to avoid cuts.
  • Clean the glass mounting areas from dirt and dust and apply silicone there with a lever syringe. It is better to take transparent silicone, it will not be so noticeable if it gets on glass.
  • Place the glass in place and secure it with glazing beads. The frame is hung in place.
  • It should be noted that beads often break during removal, so make sure you have spare beads. They are sold in construction supermarkets or in “wooden” markets.

Advice: In parallel with this method of insulation, you can immediately repair the frames (since the frames are removed: o). Take off old paint, fill cracks and knots, cover up cracks. At the same time, you can change the fittings by installing more modern and reliable locks and latches. All this will also affect the thermal insulation of the apartment.

Efficient and inexpensive way window insulation is use of adhesive polyurethane seals with a tubular profile. This method is great if cold air enters the apartment through the gaps between the frames. True, this method is rather a repair and insulation of windows, as they say, “in one bottle,” since it will not be possible to do without additional work.

The insulation is attached to one side of the window frame - along the perimeter of the transom. When closing, the frame will bend the seal at an angle, and thus block the flow of cold air into the gap. Remember, the products adhere well to the base at a temperature of at least ten degrees. So don't delay thermal insulation on the back burner. The sooner you do it, the better.

It is important to position the seal in such a way that the frame bends it and does not slide over it. Otherwise, such insulation will be of little use.
Before gluing the seal, the surface of the frame must first be prepared - remove peeling paint, clean the frames from dust and dirt.
If necessary, the surface of the frames can be sanded with fine sanding sandpaper, degrease with acetone or solvent.

You can glue in one row or, if the width of the frame allows, in several, parallel to each other. If you chose a seal with an adhesive surface, it is better to nail it along the edges with small nails for greater fixation.

The undeniable advantage of tubular profiles is the ability to open or close the doors at any convenient time. Thanks to this, ventilation of rooms during the cold season ceases to be a problem.

Tubular-type profiles have a durability of five to six years.

And finally, let's look at another way to insulate windows - insulation of windows with film. You can use regular plastic film. It is attached to the outside of the window, and if the windows are located at a height, then from the inside.

The entire window is covered with film, securing it along the outer edge of the frame. The film must be evenly stretched, otherwise the wind will tear it in places of weakness.
Choose frost-resistant film, ask the seller about it in advance. Usually the frost-resistant film has a yellowish tint.

The film is secured with push pins through some kind of lining (you can use fabric tape, or cut pieces from a thicker film) to avoid tearing the film over time at the attachment points.

If you have an industrial stapler, it will make your task of attaching the film easier. It is also necessary to place a pad under the staples.

A relative innovation is the use of heat-saving films. They let light into the room, but do not “let it out” infrared radiation, thus retaining heat. Such a film has two sides, one with a metallic sheen and conducts current, the other does not. When gluing film to glass, you must make sure that it “looks” at the street metal side- that's the whole point.

It should be glued overlapping onto the frames and secured with tape. If you stick it carefully, its presence will not even be visible.
