It is common to think that heroes are a thing of the past. That the modern generation is not capable of self-sacrifice and does not even know what it means to give one’s life for the Motherland. Today, on Defender of the Fatherland Day, the editors decided to refute this myth and remember the names of those who have become heroes in our days.
Alexander Prokhorenko
A special forces officer, 25-year-old Lieutenant Prokhorenko, died in March near Palmyra while carrying out missions to direct Russian air strikes against ISIS militants. He was discovered by terrorists and, finding himself surrounded, did not want to surrender and drew fire on himself. He was awarded the title of Hero of Russia posthumously, and a street in Orenburg was named after him. Prokhorenko’s feat aroused admiration not only in Russia. Two French families donated awards, including the Legion of Honor.
Oleg Fedura
The head of the Main Directorate of the Ministry of Emergency Situations of Russia for the Primorsky Territory personally visited all the flooded cities and villages, led search and rescue operations, and helped evacuate people. On September 2, together with his brigade, he was heading to another village, where 400 houses were flooded and more than 1,000 people were waiting for help. Crossing the river, the KAMAZ, in which Fedura and 8 other people were, collapsed into the water. Oleg Fedura saved all the personnel, but then could not get out of the flooded car and died.
Konstantin Parikozha
A native of Tomsk, the 38-year-old pilot managed to land a plane with a burning engine, which was carrying 350 passengers, including many families with children and 20 crew members. The plane was flying from the Dominican Republic. During landing, his landing gear also caught fire. However, thanks to the skill of the pilot, the Boeing 777 was successfully landed and none of the passengers were injured. Parikozha received the Order of Courage from the hands of the President.

Young policeman Danil Maksudov hardly dreamed of glory when he led frozen people to rescuers through the snow and wind. This happened on the second of January 2016 on highway Orenburg - Ork. Then, due to a sudden snowstorm, hundreds of people were trapped in the snow. After the rescue operation, more than 10 people with hypothermia were hospitalized.
25-year-old Danil led people through the wind onto the highway, where rescuers were waiting for them (their equipment was unable to get through to the stuck cars). Maksudov gave the jacket to the frozen child and the mittens to the girl. He himself suffered frostbite on his hands and lost his fingers as a result.
Sergey Ganzha
A young resident of the village of Shipunovo, Sergei Ganzha, saved a drowning five-year-old girl in the summer of 2016 and was nominated for an award from the Russian Ministry of Emergency Situations. The incident occurred on August 26. A 17-year-old boy was returning home from fishing along the banks of the Klepechikha River. On the way, his attention was attracted by the cry of a boy calling for help. It turned out that his little sister was in trouble. The guy jumped into the water with a running start and began diving, trying to find the child in muddy water. The depth was at least six meters, and the strong current made the search much more difficult. After the fourth attempt, the guy was able to find the girl at the bottom and pulled her ashore. Sergei Ganzha began performing artificial respiration and chest compressions on the child. A few minutes later the child began to breathe. After this, the young man called an ambulance, and the victim was taken to the Shipunovo district hospital.

Native Altai Territory, the crew commander of the Su-24 bomber Oleg Peshkov flew a combat mission in Syria on November 24, 2015. The bomber was shot down by the Turkish military and fell on Syrian territory. The crew managed to eject. But Peshkov was killed during landing. He was posthumously awarded the title Hero of Russia. In the village of Koshikha, Altai Territory, a street is named after him.
On September 25, 2014, 40-year-old Colonel Serik Sultangabiev in the closed military town of Lesnoy in the Sverdlovsk region covered with his body a junior sergeant who had dropped a grenade. As a result, the sergeant was not injured, but the lieutenant colonel was seriously wounded.
On March 28, 2012, at a training ground near Belogorsk, the commander of the communications battalion, Major Sergei Solnechnikov, covered a ricocheting live grenade with himself. The major died, but at the cost of his life he saved many soldiers. He was awarded the title of Hero of Russia posthumously.
Alexander Makarenko
On October 5, 2010, in the Moscow region, Lieutenant Colonel Alexander Makarenko shielded his subordinate from the explosion of a hand grenade. The soldier pulled the safety pin, but while swinging to throw, he dropped the grenade. The officer reacted instantly. He kicked the grenade away, pushed the soldier away and covered him with his body. As a result of the explosion, the lieutenant colonel received multiple shrapnel wounds and concussion. The officer underwent several operations. The soldier was not injured.

Alexander Belyaev and Alexander Golushchak
In March 2005, at the Zelenchuksky training ground, private Dmitriev dropped a grenade right under the feet of the soldiers and officers who were in the trench. Major Alexander Belyaev, who was nearby, managed to shout “grenade!”, threw the soldier out of the trench and covered him with himself. In March 2003, 45-year-old battalion commander Igor Yakunin died in the Kemerovo region. Private Denis Lobashev dropped the grenade with the ring already pulled out. The battalion commander managed to shield the young soldiers with his body. He died from his injuries a few days later.
On January 16, 2003, at the Kamyshinsky training ground in the Volgograd region, conscript soldier Daniil Bondarev dropped a grenade with the safety removed at his feet. The deputy commander of the unit, senior lieutenant Vitaly Popov, knocked the soldier down and covered him with himself during the explosion. The soldier was not injured. The officer survived miraculously and underwent serious operations. For his courage, the lieutenant was presented with a state award.

On the night of August 18-19, 1994, a detachment of Mujahideen tried to break through the outpost (Tajik border) and began shelling it. At a time when the main efforts of the border guards-paratroopers were concentrated on the right flank, the left flank of the main defense remained open, which created the threat of encirclement by the enemy. Having assessed the situation, Kozlov decided to cover the left flank of the defense. Having taken a convenient position, he conducted sniper fire at enemy firing points with virtually no cover, destroyed an RPG crew, two snipers, and suppressed a machine gun crew. By his actions, Private Oleg Kozlov prevented the enemy from breaking through to the left flank of the defense. By Decree of the President of the Russian Federation B.N. Yeltsin, Private Oleg Anatolyevich Kozlov was awarded the title of Hero of Russia. 
On January 1, 1995, during the assault on Grozny during the First Chechen War, units of the 131st brigade were surrounded in the area of the railway station. The units suffered heavy losses in manpower, lost almost all their armored vehicles and could not escape from the city on their own. The command assigned Captain Lelyukh's reconnaissance group the task of breaking through the encirclement as soon as possible and facilitating the brigade's exit from the city. Igor Lelyukh objected that without the support of armored vehicles by the forces of one reconnaissance group, the task was impossible, but the objections were rejected due to the catastrophic situation of the brigade and the lack of any other reserves. The reconnaissance group managed to break through the encirclement and approach the brigade's positions. But soon the reserves of the Dudayevites were brought up, and the decision was made to retreat. Igor Lelyukh was seriously wounded and remained to cover the retreat of the fighters. For 30 minutes he held off the militants with machine gun fire and grenades, after which he was wounded a second time and shot at point-blank range while unconscious. For courage and heroism shown in the performance of military duty, by decree of the President of the Russian Federation of December 7, 1995, Captain Lelyukh Igor Viktorovich was awarded the title of Hero of the Russian Federation (posthumously) 
On January 23, 1976, for the first time in world practice, a BMD-1 (combat tracked amphibious vehicle) was parachuted and soft-landed using a parachute-rocket system, also with two crew members on board - Major Alexander Vasilyevich Margelov and Lieutenant Colonel Leonid Ivanovich Shcherbakov. The landing was carried out at great risk to life, without personal means of rescue. Landing equipment with a crew on jet systems made it possible to bring airborne divisions into battle not in seven days, as before, but in 22 minutes. This became a serious trump card during cold war. For his feat, Alexander Margelov was awarded the Gold Star of Hero Soviet Union. Twenty years later, for the feat of the seventies, both were awarded the title of Hero of Russia. 
October 6, 1996 at 11:25 a.m. as a result of deliberate criminal actions unknown person diesel locomotive TEM2-595 was set in motion; After making sure that the locomotive was picking up speed, the attacker jumped off. When the dispatcher raised the alarm, the distance between the trains was only two kilometers. There was no time to think. Alexander and his assistant stopped their train, uncoupled the locomotive and took the only the right decision: use the locomotive as a battering ram, drive towards the freight one and take the blow. This was the only way to save the passengers. The uncontrollable diesel locomotive was moving, as calculations showed, at a speed of 120 km/h. As a result of the collision, both locomotives cannot be restored. The driver and his assistant survived, having received minor injuries. The train passengers (more than 200 people) were not injured; a possible explosion of a nearby oil pipeline was prevented. For courage and heroism shown in an extreme situation to prevent a passenger train crash, he was awarded the title of Hero of the Russian Federation with the Golden Star medal. 
He took part in many search and rescue operations in Russia and abroad, participated in the operation to deliver humanitarian aid during the war in Bosnia, in the search for helicopter pilots who died during the Georgian-Abkhaz war in the area of the Kodori River, and evacuated the sick during the first Chechen war and wounded from Grozny, rescued exhibits of the local museum. He led a ski group during the exercises of the Russian Ministry of Emergency Situations at the North Pole. Andrei Rozhkov died on April 22, 1998 while diving into the waters of the Arctic Ocean while testing new rescue diving equipment. On June 30, 1998, for the courage and heroism shown during testing of new rescue diving equipment, by decree of the President of the Russian Federation, he was posthumously awarded the title of Hero of the Russian Federation. 
On August 31, 1999, during the cleansing of the village of Karamakhi (Dagestan), Irina Yanina, as part of an evacuation group, provided assistance to wounded soldiers. At the risk of her life she provided assistance to 15 wounded people. Three times she drove an armored personnel carrier directly to the line of fire, from where she took out another 28 wounded soldiers of the federal forces. During the fourth sortie, the enemy launched a counterattack and Yanina, having organized the loading of the wounded, covered the operation with machine gun fire. During the retreat, the armored personnel carrier was hit by two grenades, which resulted in strong fire. Irina Yanina helped the wounded get out of the burning car. Thanks to her, captain A.L. Krivtsov, privates S.V. Golnev and I.A. Lyadov were saved. Irina herself did not have time to leave the burning car. She left behind a son. 
In 1996-2002 it took place military service in the North Caucasus Military District. Alexey Galkin repeatedly participated in counter-terrorism operations, acting as part of a strictly classified reconnaissance group, and in the fall of 1999 he was captured by Basayev himself. It’s better not to remember what the officer suffered in captivity. Galkin himself told his friends what happened: he prayed to God that when shelling militant bases, his shell would hit the place of his imprisonment. However, fate decreed otherwise. The courageous intelligence officer, who went through all the circles of Chechen hell, managed to escape with weapons in his hands. After escaping from captivity, Basayev and Khattab, who was still alive, promised a million dollars for Galkin’s head. The GRU officer was a very strong trump card for them, and they really planned to take him to London for some political intrigue. In the fall of 2002, A.V. Galkin’s reconnaissance group, during a special operation, captured important documents that confirmed the involvement international terrorism to the activities of separatist gangs in Chechnya. 
On May 26, 1997 he was called up for military service. During all his years of service, he served in Chechnya and was awarded five commendations for conscientiously fulfilling his duty to the Fatherland on the Dagestan-Chechen border. After completing his military service, he remained to serve under a contract. He was the owner of a maroon beret. July 14, 2000 during military operation, covered a grenade thrown by militants with his body and thereby saved the life of the commander and several colleagues. He was posthumously awarded the title of Hero of Russia. 
Filipov was an ace pilot of attack aircraft, repeatedly took part in the All-Russian military maneuvers “Aviadarts”, where in 2013 he took second place among attack aircraft. On February 3, 2018, while flying over the Idlib de-escalation zone (Syria) to monitor the ceasefire, the leading Russian Su-25SM attack aircraft in a pair, under the control of Major Filipov, near the city of Serakib was shot down by a shot from a MANPADS. The pilot tried to keep the plane in the air and reported that he was attacked by a missile, after which he ejected. On the ground, the pilot was surrounded by militants and died in the ensuing battle: while firing back from the attackers with a Stechkin pistol, he was seriously wounded, and then blew himself up with a grenade with the words “This is for the boys!” Almost every day in our lives there is a place for heroism. Most often they are committed by military personnel, rescuers, and police officers. To whom it is due due to duty. But they are not the only ones who risk their lives to save others.
You often hear grumbling about the topic: the people have become smaller, the people are completely different, there are no men left at all. Well, then everything, as the classic wrote: “yes, there were people in our time...” Since the time of Lermontov, little has changed: “You are not heroes...”, other accusations against these modern handsome young men in tapered trousers and young men in stylish jackets on shiny cars. Looking fashionable and even glamorous. And looking at them, one can really doubt: why should they become heroes? They have more perfumes and cosmetics than any beauty. And, unfortunately, we will be wrong in our doubts.
Why "Unfortunately? Yes, because we really want there to be no room for heroic deeds in our lives. Because heroic deeds often have to be performed by one, because of the negligence and carelessness of others.
From this, however, surprise and admiration modern heroes it doesn't get any smaller. Just as there are no fewer heroes themselves who are ready to sacrifice themselves for the sake of others. Here are the most striking examples of this.
1. A real colonel
This is the biggest story right now. In the Urals, the colonel covered with himself a grenade that a soldier accidentally dropped. This happened in military unit 3275 in the city of Lesnoy, Sverdlovsk region, during an exercise on September 25. The sergeant, apparently, was confused or lost in thought; there is even talk that the day before he played computer games all night and did not get enough sleep, so he did not hold the grenade with the pin pulled out. She rolled on the ground. The soldiers froze in horror. In general, you can imagine these terrible moments. Only the unit commander, 41-year-old Colonel Serik Sultangabiev, was not at a loss. Without hesitation for a second, he rushed to RGD-5. And the next moment there was an explosion.
Fortunately, none of the soldiers were injured. The colonel was urgently taken to the hospital, where medical teams operated on Serik Sultangabiev for 8 hours straight. As a result, the officer lost his left eye and two fingers on his right hand. The bulletproof vest saved his life.
Now Colonel Serik Sultangabiev has been presented with the Order of Courage. The documents necessary for this have already been sent to Moscow by the Ural command internal troops Ministry of Internal Affairs.
2. Solnechnikov’s feat
Of course, when talking today about Sultangabiev’s feat, he is immediately compared with the feat of another officer - Sergei Solnechnikov. Major from the city of Belogorsk Amur region. Became a Hero of Russia posthumously. He also covered a grenade that one of his soldiers dropped during a training exercise. An explosion occurred and the officer received numerous injuries. An hour and a half later, he died on the operating table of a military hospital. The wounds turned out to be incompatible with life. So the major, at the cost of his own life, saved hundreds of his subordinates. I did it without hesitation. Last August he would have turned only 34 years old. In honor of Major Sergei Solnechnikov, both in his hometown of Volzhsk and in Belogorsk, where he served, monuments are erected and streets are named in his honor.
3. Saved 300 people
Another hero, who was remembered at the end of September in his native Buryatia and talked about raising funds for the construction of a monument in his honor, has not yet received such an honor. Aldar Tsydenzhapov, sailor Pacific Fleet Russia, died in the fall of 2010 while serving on the destroyer Bystry. Aldar, at the cost of his life, prevented a major accident on a warship, saving the ship itself and 300 crew members from death. The 19-year-old guy received the title of Hero posthumously...
4. A ship in honor of a hero
And in the Irkutsk region, at the end of September, a ship named after the hero-rescuer: “Vitaly Tikhonov” was launched. The completely restored ship was named in honor of the tragically deceased deputy head of the Baikal search and rescue team. Vitaly Vladimirovich died during training camps. He spent 25 years rescuing people, participated in more than 500 search operations, and saved more than 200 people. It was not possible to save him...
These feats can hardly be forgotten. Although people, it would seem, died while serving, which in general itself is associated with all sorts of risks. But even in Everyday life We are lucky to have heroes.
5. Hollywood is taking a break
The other day, the head of the Russian Ministry of Internal Affairs for the Kaluga Region, Sergei Bachurin, presented traffic police inspector Evgeniy Vorobyov with a valuable gift and thanked his mother Valentina Semyonovna.

Agree, such scenes can only be seen in Hollywood action films, and all the stunts are performed by well-trained stuntmen. Meanwhile, this was done by a simple traffic police officer.
6. In honor of a fellow countryman and a real Cossack
These days, people in the Volgograd region are remembering their heroic fellow countryman. At the end of September, a monument to the Cossack Ruslan Kazakov was erected on the Nagolny farm, Kotelnikovsky district, Volgograd region. He himself voluntarily went to Simferopol to ensure order during the referendum on the status of Crimea, to ensure order there.
Kazakov served as part of a local Cossack self-defense unit. On March 18, he was patrolling the territory of a military unit. At that moment, his young colleague, an 18-year-old guy, was shot in the leg by a sniper. Seeing that the younger comrade had fallen, Ruslan Kazakov rushed to him and covered him with his body. And he was immediately killed by the next shot. Posthumously Ruslan Kazakov was awarded the Order of Courage. A monument was erected in his honor in his homeland.
7. Hero-traffic cop
A traffic police officer from Saratov, risking his life, blocked the path of an out-of-control truck.
Police lieutenant, traffic police regiment inspector for Saratov Daniil Sultanov stood at the intersection. The prohibitory traffic light came on. And suddenly Daniil saw an out-of-control truck rushing down the road, hitting cars and unable to stop on its own. Then Daniel blocked his way with his car and thus stopped the speeding truck, which was sweeping away everything in its path. Daniel was able to save a dozen lives. The traffic police inspector himself escaped with a concussion.
In total, 12 cars and 4 people were injured in the accident. The incident could have ended terrible tragedy, if not for the feat of Daniil Sultanov.
No one in the country keeps special statistics, but if there were, it would probably become clear how many people, thanks to heroes, continue to live. Someone was rescued from a fire, someone was pulled out of a pond. These people always come to help themselves, they are not called, they are not asked for it. And not only in our country. Recently in Saratov, father and son Osherov, both named Sergei, and Alexander Dubrovin were awarded. While on vacation in Israel, three residents of Saratov saved a drowning mother and child and a woman. For which they were awarded medals. If not for them, mother and son would have died.
These are our contemporaries. And no matter how much psychologists tell us that sacrificing oneself for the sake of others is not right. That you need to live solely for your own sake, there are those for whom this rule is simply unacceptable. And they, without hesitation, cover the other...

Zhenya Tabakov
Most young hero Russia. A Real Man who was only 7 years old. The only seven-year-old recipient of the Order of Courage. Unfortunately, posthumously.
The tragedy took place on the evening of November 28, 2008. Zhenya and his twelve-year-old older sister Yana were alone at home. An unknown man rang the doorbell and introduced himself as a postman who allegedly brought a registered letter.
Yana did not suspect anything was wrong and allowed him to come in. Entering the apartment and closing the door behind him, the “postman” took out a knife instead of a letter and, grabbing Yana, began to demand that the children give him all the money and valuables. Having received an answer from the children that they did not know where the money was, the criminal demanded that Zhenya look for it, and he dragged Yana into the bathroom, where he began to tear off her clothes. Seeing how he was tearing off his sister’s clothes, Zhenya grabbed kitchen knife and in desperation thrust it into the criminal's lower back. Howling in pain, he loosened his grip, and the girl managed to run out of the apartment for help. In a rage, the would-be rapist, tearing the knife out of himself, began to thrust it into the child (eight puncture wounds incompatible with life were counted on Zhenya’s body), after which he fled. However, the wound inflicted by Zhenya, leaving a trail of blood behind, did not allow him to escape the pursuit.
By Decree of the President of the Russian Federation of January 20, 2009. For the courage and dedication shown in the performance of civic duty, Evgeniy Evgenievich Tabakov was posthumously awarded the Order of Courage. The order was received by Zhenya’s mother Galina Petrovna.
On September 1, 2013, a monument to Zhenya Tabakov was unveiled in the school yard - a boy driving a kite away from a dove.
Danil Sadykov
A 12-year-old teenager, a resident of the city of Naberezhnye Chelny, died while saving a 9-year-old schoolboy. The tragedy occurred on May 5, 2012 on Entuziastov Boulevard. At about two o'clock in the afternoon, 9-year-old Andrei Churbanov decided to get plastic bottle, fell into the fountain. Suddenly he was electrocuted, the boy lost consciousness and fell into the water.
Everyone shouted “help,” but only Danil, who was passing by on a bicycle at that moment, jumped into the water. Danil Sadykov pulled the victim onto the side, but he himself received a severe electric shock. He died before the ambulance arrived.
Thanks to the selfless act of one child, another child survived.
Danil Sadykov was awarded the Order of Courage. Posthumously. For the courage and dedication shown in saving a person in extreme conditions. The award was presented by the Chairman of the Investigative Committee of the Russian Federation. Instead of his son, the boy’s father, Aidar Sadykov, received it.
Maxim Konov and Georgy Suchkov
IN Nizhny Novgorod region two third-graders saved a woman who had fallen into an ice hole. When she was already saying goodbye to life, two boys passed by the pond, returning from school. A 55-year-old resident of the village of Mukhtolova, Ardatovsky district, went to the pond to draw water from the Epiphany ice hole. The ice hole was already covered with an edge of ice, the woman slipped and lost her balance. Wearing heavy winter clothes, she found herself in ice water. Having caught on the edge of the ice, the unfortunate woman began to call for help.
Fortunately, at that moment two friends Maxim and Georgy were passing by the pond, returning from school. Having noticed the woman, they, without wasting a second, rushed to help. Having reached the ice hole, the boys took the woman by both hands and pulled her onto the strong ice. The guys walked her home, not forgetting to grab a bucket and sled. Arriving doctors examined the woman, provided assistance, and she did not require hospitalization.
Of course, such a shock did not pass without a trace, but the woman never tires of thanking the guys for staying alive. She gave soccer balls and cell phones to her rescuers.
Vanya Makarov
Vanya Makarov from Ivdel is now eight years old. A year ago, he saved his classmate from the river, who fell through the ice. Looking at this little boy- slightly taller more than a meter and weighing only 22 kilograms - it’s hard to imagine how he alone could pull the girl out of the water. Vanya grew up in an orphanage with his sister. But two years ago he ended up in the family of Nadezhda Novikova (and the woman already had four children of her own). In the future, Vanya plans to go to cadet school and then become a rescuer.
Kobychev Maxim
A fire broke out in a private residential building in the village of Zelveno, Amur Region, late in the evening. Neighbors discovered the fire very late when thick smoke poured out of the windows of the burning house. Having reported the fire, residents began to extinguish the flames by dousing it with water. By that time, things and the walls of the building were burning in the rooms. Among those who came running to help was 14-year-old Maxim Kobychev.
