General operating principle and appearance of folding doors

Externally, accordion doors are lamellas of different widths, usually from 10–15 cm, which are connected to each other using hinges. IN assembled form they resemble blinds. Another main difference between them and swing doors is the presence of guides, usually upper, less often lower. Besides standard doors accordions with slats in the form of blinds, there are other models on the market that are no less popular. For example, accordion or “book” doors of 2 sections. Due to the smaller number of folding elements, this design is considered more reliable and less likely to jam, which is typical for cheap multi-section plastic accordions. Smooth sliding along the guides is ensured by movable slider rollers, and fixation of the canvas in the selected position is ensured by stopper flags.

Standard configurations consist of 3–4 sections, and can also be equipped with additional sections if it is necessary to expand the doorway. There is an opinion that accordion doors look cheap and do not fit well with the interior. The usual folding curtain doors made of plastic really look like this, but options made of wood, glass and aluminum, on the contrary, are presented in a wide range of models. IN construction stores can also be found combined options with stained glass windows, metal and wooden frames, all glass sliding structures. Here everything depends on your taste preferences, financial capabilities and the width of the doorway.

A little about door materials, their advantages and disadvantages

Let's start with analysis plastic structures.According to the principle of assembly and fastening to the wall, such structures are as follows:

  • assembled on one side and inserted into the guides;
  • disappear into the wall, the doors go into a niche plasterboard construction, which is pre-installed;
  • made in the form of a book, assembled from two canvases of the same size, which are moved apart in one movement.

When purchasing folding doors made from PVC panels, consider following features: The fastening between the panels is also made of plastic. Therefore, the fewer lamellas, the greater the strength and service life of the structure. PVC doors help to delimit space, but they are not capable of insulating a room from noise and cold. When installing such doors, you should strictly adhere to horizontal position and double-check the accuracy of the level several times. Otherwise, the misalignment will create increased load on the roller mechanism, stoppers and hinges, which will lead to rapid wear and failure.

Instead of sliding structures from plastic, experts recommend wooden analogues. To ensure that the sliding door is not heavy, soft wood, such as pine, is used for its manufacture. Sections of canvases are connected to each other not by soft hinged profiles, but by hinges of a hidden or open type. Instead of natural wood For the production of canvases, MDF panels with a blank facade or glass and metal inserts are used. In order not to worry about the shrinkage of solid wood panels, we recommend purchasing doors made from glued timber. If you want to fill the room with light and expand the space, you can use an accordion. They can be made entirely of glass or with metal and wood inserts.

If we put together the advantages of high-quality folding doors, we can highlight the following advantages:

  • visual expansion of space;
  • saving room space by moving the canvas across the opening;
  • lightness of doors due to design features;
  • ease of installation;
  • wide variety of models in design and price.

Among the disadvantages of such interior doors are the lack of proper heat and sound insulation, the fragility of multi-section and cheap plastic structures, and rapid failure with intensive use and careless handling.

Preparing the doorway for installation - what needs to be done at this stage?

Before installing the accordion door, quite often the old door frames are not dismantled. On the one hand, this simplifies the installation process and reduces the time for additional work. However old box was collected under old door with a different type of construction, it takes up a lot of the usable width of the opening, which is required for installing the guides. Therefore, we recommend dismantling the old door frame and also knocking down the layer old plaster down to the base (concrete, brick). Only after such preparation do we take measurements of the opening and purchase the desired model of a folding door.

In order not to increase or, on the contrary, reduce the opening, try to select models that are as close as possible to the size of your opening. We install doors at the final stage of repair, when Finishing work will be completely completed. Let's start assembling a new door frame without a threshold. We saw off the rack parts of the box with gaps of 3 mm at the top and 10 mm at the bottom. Upper part We saw off the posts at an angle of 45°. To ensure that the angle is smooth without distortion, use a miter saw. As a last resort, if you don’t have such a tool at hand, use a regular saw or grinder and a square. We saw off the lower part of the stand at a right angle. We perform similar operations with the second rack. If the design of your folding door involves hanging hinges on the door frame, for example, when installing wooden canvas like a book, we make it under card loops seats and attach one part of the hinges to the screws. Pre-drill holes for screws. This will prevent the wood from chipping and cracking. To connect the side parts of the box to each other, we use a crossbar, sawing it off on both sides at an angle of 45°. When calculating the length of the crossbar, we take into account the gaps between the door frame and the wall of 1 cm on each side.

We assemble the finished parts of the door frame on flat surface. To connect, we drill holes for self-tapping screws diagonally in the upper part of the structure. We do this using a drill with a diameter of 2–2.5 mm. It is more convenient to drill holes for self-tapping screws with a countersink. This will allow the screws to penetrate deeper and fix in the box. From each end of the upper corners of the box we drill two diagonal holes for self-tapping screws. After preparing the holes, screw the screws into them.

We mount the prepared box in the doorway. We insert spacer bars and wedges 1 cm thick between the door frame and the wall. This will allow us to fix the position of the door frame and prevent it from slipping during fastening. Using dowel screws, we fix the position of the box in the opening. There should be at least 4-5 fasteners on each side. Seal the gaps between the door frame and the wall polyurethane foam, wait until it hardens. In the meantime, let's get acquainted with step by step instructions assembling the accordion doors specified by the manufacturer and carry out necessary work on assembly.

Basic instructions for assembling and installing accordion doors

After installing the door frame, we begin further work by preparing the main guide profile, which is included in the kit. To adjust it to the dimensions we need, we measure the width of the doorway, which was obtained after installing the door frame, and measure this distance on the profile, make a mark and cut off the excess with a miter box. We perform similar operations with the guides on the sides, if they are provided for in the installation of your door. After adjusting the guides to the dimensions of your opening, we first apply them without fastening, and see if we have measured everything accurately. Now we drill holes for the screws in the guides. The step between the fasteners should be 15–20 cm. Knowing the distance between the fasteners, we determine the total number of screws. We drill holes for them with a diameter of 3 mm.

The guides are installed. We move on to preparing the lamellas or sheets, depending on the design of your accordion. We measure the height of the opening and cut off the excess part of the strips. At the same time, do not forget to take into account the gap of 5–8 mm under the door, which is necessary for ventilation. When cutting the canvas or lamellas, carefully measure everything again, and also read in more detail the recommendations of the manufacturer of your accordion model. Remember, when closing the door, it should fully reach the opposite door without a gap.

Now let's move on to assembling the doors. Here again everything depends on the model and design you choose. Let's look at the two most common examples - classic lamellas made of plastic or MDF and an accordion like a book of two sections. Plastic strips are connected to each other using grooves, and from MDF - through a longitudinal axis, which passes through the eyes of each lamella. Book-type canvases of two or more sections are usually made of natural wood or MDF. They are connected to each other using loops. They can be either hidden or end-mounted. We have already talked in more detail about attaching hinges in step by step wizard class pro. Before fixing the hinges, the holes for the screws also need to be drilled.

We insert slider rollers into the guide profile and fix them. Hanging assembled door. We roll the canvas to the end and tighten all the fasteners, install the stoppers. We finally fix the side guides and screw the assembled sheet to the left or right edge of the profile. On the opposite side from the blind side we attach a handle and a lock to the canvas. Let's check the mechanism in action.

The final stage of work is the installation of platbands. As in the case of the box, we cut off the edges of the crossbar and the upper parts of the racks at 45°. You can attach platbands different ways. Most often, regular or liquid nails are used. The second option provides a more reliable fixation, but subsequently dismantling such platbands is quite problematic. As you can see, installing an accordion is not so difficult; the main thing is to adhere to the manufacturer’s recommendations and general rules.

We will install an accordion door and talk about how you can do it yourself and what problems may arise during the installation process.

After unpacking, before proceeding with assembling and installing the door, you must check the presence of all components and parts. Their number depends on the kit itself and on what size the door should be.

You also need to check the quality of the parts. They often have scratches and other damage that may occur during transportation. If you are satisfied with the quality, feel free to proceed with assembly and installation. We will consider the assembly of the door, the assembled dimensions of which should be 83 by 204 cm. We will also consider all the problems that may arise during installation.

Preparing the opening

So, first of all, you need to prepare the opening. We will do this using additional strips.

Taking into account the size of the door and the thickness of the trim, we can easily calculate the size of the opening we need.

So, here are our calculations: 83 + 2 + 2 = 87 cm. Here 83 is the width of the accordion door itself, 2 is the thickness of two additional strips of 1 cm, then the next two is the 1 cm distance between the extension and the wall on each side for foaming. As a result, we get 87 cm - our opening should be 87 cm wide. After we have found out the dimensions, we begin preparing the opening. On the one hand, we need to remove all remnants of the plaster. We do this using a hammer drill.

Perhaps your opening will already be cleared. Accordingly, here you see an already cleaned opening:

This size is required for installation. We mark these 87 cm in the direction we want to expand, and draw a level line along the entire height.

Next, we proceed to expand the opening to the resulting size. It can be done different ways. For example, cut off part of the wall using a grinder or expand it using a hammer drill. We choose the last method, that is, expansion with a hammer drill, so that there is as little dust as possible during the work process - the apartment in which the installation took place was already residential. With this option, along the line that we drew, it is necessary to make through holes with a hammer drill using a drill.

We make holes along the entire length approximately every 3-4 cm and beat the brick away from these holes with a hammer drill using a spatula.

So, the opening for beautification is ready.

Assembling a structure from additional strips

Let's start assembling the structure from additional strips.

First, we cut off the uneven part of each extension.

We need the top bar to be 85 cm long, so, having cut it with a jigsaw, we measure 85 cm from the flat end and cut it too.

The size of the side strips can be found as follows. We take the height of the opening, in our case it is 207 cm, and subtract 2 cm from it - 1 cm for the thickness of the finishing and 1 cm for foaming. After all the cuts we begin to assemble the structure itself. To do this, measure 0.5 cm from each edge of the top trim, draw a line for convenience and drill 2 holes with a diameter of 3 mm at an arbitrary distance from each other at this distance.

After this, we lean the side panels against the top one so that the edge of the side goes along the cut of the top panel:

Next, holding the structure in this position, we drill the side strips through the finished holes and screw in self-tapping screws measuring approximately 3 by 50 mm. The result should be a U-shaped structure, ready for installation.

Let's try it on in the opening. If done correctly, it fits easily.

We make holes in the side strips:

They need to be drilled at the same distance from each other along the entire length and exactly in the middle along the width. In our case, the extensions were 15 cm, which means that the middle of the extension is 7.5 cm.

The length of the plank is 205 cm. We retreat 10 cm from the bottom and divide it into 5 parts. It turns out that the holes will go every 39 cm. The holes themselves may be different. It depends on what fasteners you use. For example, you can make holes of 3 mm and countersunk holes of 8.5 mm and secure them using a “hedgehog” dowel and a wood screw – a “hedgehog” dowel and a wood screw through the plank. You can simply use a dowel-nail, as in our case.

But in the case of a dowel-nail, it is necessary to make the hole narrower by 6 mm and countersunk by 10 mm.

When attaching the additional strip to the wall, do not forget that everything must be done exclusively according to the level.

(Figure 28)
Remember to check the level even after you have already secured the strip to make sure nothing has moved. When leveling, be sure to leave a distance for foaming between the finishing and the wall. To do this, you can use wooden blocks as a spacer.

Depending on the evenness of the wall, the resulting blocks will be different. After we have placed the structure in the opening, we can begin foaming.

Foaming is done from bottom to top on both sides.

Door assembly

While the foam hardens, we will begin assembling the door itself.

First of all, we saw off the side guide profile and the horizontal rail to the required length, which in principle is the same thing. The only difference is in the use of the sides. So we need to measure the horizontal rail to be 83 cm long, and the guide profile together with the rail connected to it is measured to be 205 cm, that is, along the length of the additional strip.

All this, of course, needs to be cut.

After that we put the panels together.

The sequence is as follows: we attach a narrow panel to the finishing panel. Here is the final and narrow panel:

After this comes the hinge profile:

We connect the panels, and here comes a small hinged profile, which continues to alternate with wide profiles:

Now comes the wide profile. Here are the finishing, narrow, articulated and wide profiles:

The launchpad completes this:

And at the end there is a guide connecting profile. This is how it is attached:

And this is what it all looks like:

Now you need to fasten everything together. For this purpose, we put a plug on the hinge profile and screw it with the short screw from the kit. It all happens like this:

The profile is put on here, wrapped, and this is how it looks in its finished form:

This procedure must be repeated with each profile, both from the lower and upper edges of the resulting canvas. Next come the videos.

We screw them to the finishing panel and to the middle of the upper end of each wide panel using long screws, exactly in the middle. This is what it looks like when completed:

Installation of a door in an opening

After this, we proceed to install the door into the opening. First we will prepare the horizontal rail.

You need to make four 3 mm holes in it and through them, leaning the rail against the intended mounting location, drill an additional strip.

After that, folding the door into an accordion, we put it on the rail, without fastening anything yet.

The door is hung:

Let's move on to the guide profiles. They also need to be drilled in four places with a 3 mm drill at equal distances from each other. It is very important. We make holes in the extensions in the same way.

This is what it looks like:

After this, we connect the canvas to the guide profile using a joining profile, which already sits on the canvas itself.

It is very flexible and attaches with a snap. Here it is already latched:

Installation of handles

For a complete picture, you need to install handles.

They are installed in holes already prepared by the factory and fastened to each other through the panel using ties:

These are the holes:

We put the handles on both sides and wrap them:

After this, you need to close the door and make a mark from the latch on the guide profile. Here is this guide profile, and from this latch, which is slightly visible from the side, we make marks with a pencil:

According to them, it will be necessary to screw the strike plate for the latch onto the profile and check its functionality.

Everything should snap into place.

Installation of platbands

The last thing to do is cash out. But before that you will have to cut off the frozen foam. A mark for cutting the casing must be made along the edge of the additional strip.

It is important here not to randomly mix up the angle of the cut. In the same way we cut the right bar:

It's better to start with side planks. You can saw them off using either a miter saw or a hacksaw with a miter box:

We attach the platband using finishing nails.

It is necessary to take into account: if the thickness of the additional strip is 1 cm, you need to drive the finishing nail 0.5 cm so that the nail goes exactly into the middle of the additional strip. In this way we nail the platbands to the additional strips.

It is more convenient to first attach the side trims and only then the top ones. This is what it should look like:

After we repeat the procedure on the reverse side, the installation of the accordion door, as well as the accompanying lining of the opening, will be completed. This is what the finished door looks like:

Unfortunately, our additional trim and trim are slightly different in color, because we couldn’t match the color. This is what the door looks like when completed:

You can see that the plaster is slightly damaged after expansion - it will need to be plastered. Don't pay attention to the visible curvature of the door - it's all about the lens. In fact, everything is done exactly, otherwise the door simply would not close.

The doorway is integral part any room, and every apartment owner wants to decorate it in his own way. In fact, there are a lot of design options; some prefer to install regular wooden doors, and some decorative or metal products. Nowadays in markets and stores you can often find beautiful models of doors called “accordion”. To install them, use special technology, requiring strict adherence to all rules and consistency, while fulfilling high-quality installation Accordion doors are not difficult if you have all the materials.

Accordion doors are installed in places where it is not possible to install a regular door, these can be wide doorways, closets, etc.

Such a product should not only be functional, but also fit perfectly into the interior of the room. As a rule, interior doors can be of different sizes, colors and textures, so choosing the right product will not be difficult.

For small apartments, they are considered a good option sliding doors compartment or accordion doors that can be installed in any room. The product is often installed in the living room, bedroom, kitchen or office. In addition, the plastic accordion door can be installed as a shower curtain. Following simple recommendations, installing an accordion door with your own hands will not be difficult.

What are the features?

  • It is important to note the significant space savings. Often you have to place furniture based on the location of doorways. It is unlikely that you will be able to place a closet, sofa or shelf nearby, since this will interfere with the opening of the door. As for the accordion, such problems do not arise.
  • The walls can be finished with any materials, since opened door will not damage the cladding with its handle.
  • Such doors are silent, they open smoothly, sliding along the guides.
  • Another important advantage is safety; children will not be able to pinch their finger, which cannot be said about conventional door designs. In addition, these doors open easily.
  • Reliable to use. Accordion doors may occasionally sag or warp. This only happens due to fluctuations in temperature and humidity. Perhaps many have noticed that in certain seasons of the year the sash opens or closes with difficulty, but this in no way applies to accordions.
  • Such products can be installed for any opening, even where regular door doesn't fit.

Equipment

Before installing the accordion door, you need to check the presence of all parts and fasteners.
So, the accordion door kit includes:

  • top rail in the form of an aluminum guide;
  • door panel;
  • 2 roller runners;
  • hinges for connecting panels;
  • adjusting key;
  • other elements and accessories for installation.

If doorway has a standard width of up to one meter, it is not necessary to install a bottom guide. In some cases, extensions and trims are not included in the kit, so they have to be purchased separately.

As a rule, doors are purchased with all necessary spare parts and fastenings. If the kit is of high quality and not cheap, then it will include spare hair for increasing the width of the door in the future.

In addition to the materials for installing the accordion door, you need to purchase preparation materials doorway. Any extensions and platbands with a thickness of at least 15 mm are suitable for these purposes.

You also need to prepare some tools, without which it is impossible to install such a door. So, you can’t do without an impact drill, a hammer drill, a tape measure, a plumb line and bubble level, construction angle, hacksaw, miter box, bars or wooden bowls, polyurethane foam.

Features of doorway preparation

There are options for mounting an accordion door inside the door frame, but in this way it will not be possible to significantly save the usable width of the opening. In such cases, it is recommended to completely remove the old door and frame, knocking down the mortar underneath to the base of the wall.

After such actions, you can take measurements of the formed opening and determine the amount of material. The need for additional expansion and reduction of the doorway is also determined.

The prepared extensions need to be cut to form a box without a threshold. IN in this case top bar will be fixed with the end to the upper edge of the vertical extensions with self-tapping screws.

To prevent damage to the material, you must first drill holes at the installation points of the self-tapping screws using a thin drill, and then screw them in.

After preparing the door frame, you can insert it into the doorway using blocks and other wooden backings as wedges. For better reliability, it is recommended to use bars of equal width. Using them, spacers are formed in the center and along the lower edge. This is necessary so that the extensions do not sag during installation. To fix the extensions to the base, long anchors are used, which are installed three on each side and two on top.

After tightening the anchors, you can proceed to the process of foaming the gap between the extensions and the wall. When the foam is completely dry, install the door itself.

Installation of an accordion door

You need to measure the height and width of the doorway before purchasing the door. This is the only way to know the required number of panels in a sash. The folding door must be installed by fixing the guide.

For standard opening The width of the guide rail can vary between 33-35 cm, while its height can be 33-39 mm. If the width of this opening is less than the length of the guide, then the last element must be cut using a hacksaw for metal.

The distance between the holes and the guide should be approximately 25-30 cm. Using these holes, it is fixed at the top of the opening. If necessary, you need to drill new ones.

When opening the sash from right to left, you need to put a latch on the right side, and the same will happen on the other side.

You need to insert the end panel axle into the latch and place the carriage slider in the rail. The guide is fixed to the upper area of the opening using self-tapping screws 20-30 mm long. After this, a metal axis is installed in the end sash at the top and bottom. To do this, you need to mark the position of the axes and drill holes for them, if there are none, and their depth should be less than the length of the axes.

It should be noted that the end of each axis will protrude slightly. The axes are fixed to the panel. As a general rule, the bottom and top axis should be aligned horizontally and vertically.

Under the axis located in the lower corner of the opening, you need to install a receiving plate, placing its position relative to the latch. At the upper end of the panel that was installed last, you need to drill holes where the slider will be attached. The accordion door panels must be placed side by side in the same way as they are intended to be connected with hinges. You need to be careful not to confuse the placement of the right and left panels. Next they move on to the stage of installing the door hinges. Using a pencil, you need to carefully place their location on the shutters, taking into account the required distance. It is recommended to place three hinges between the closest sashes, but not on the outer ones.

Horizontal placement of low, middle or upper level elements is provided. This pattern should be the same on all sashes. The slightest displacement should not be allowed, since distortions and subsequently cracks may appear on the panels.

Having marked the placement of each hinge with the same distance, both horizontally and vertically, you need to secure three hinges on one sash. They need to be inserted into back side. Adjacent panels must be connected in such a way that the distance between the mini panels is approximately 3 mm.

To install the handle on last panel you need to drill out the groove. It is installed on the outer panel near the loop connection. In addition, you need to drill a groove for the lock between the panels.

After this, you can hang the assembled sashes on the mounts. The structure rises and is inserted into metal axles, namely landing plates. Now you need to connect the carriage axis to the plate of the last sash. For these purposes, you need to use a key to adjust the position and movement of the door itself. The shutter is adjusted by tightening or loosening the nut on the end or carriage axle.

If the doorway is more than one meter, then more upper runners are needed to cover it. You will also need a support to adjust the door travel in the lower area of the opening. You cannot do without a bottom rail into which the wheels of the carriage mounted on one or two panels will be wound. The guide needs to be recessed into the floor or hidden under the threshold. It should be noted that dirt often accumulates in the channel, which is not completely cleaned out.

What could be the disadvantages of an accordion door?

Despite the important advantages of such door design, there are some disadvantages associated with using large quantity bearings and hinges, which can reduce the reliability of the door. If you buy an inexpensive product, then much attention should be paid to the choice of accessories. The service life of the door will depend on its quality.

Disadvantages also include poor sound and heat insulation. Closing the door tightly is very difficult to achieve. If you buy it to create silence in the room, then this is not a very suitable option.

It is better to install such doors in rooms with a small area. They effectively save useful space.

If you are limited in space when planning the interior of your home, you will probably be interested in learning how to install an accordion door with your own hands. Such interior partitions They are cheaper than the compartment version, but at the same time they also save space. In addition, if you understand the design details, you can do all the work yourself, without the help of specialists.

For self-installation accordion doors need to understand all the details

Design Features

Before you decide to install an accordion door with your own hands, you need to take a closer look at the features of its design. It is radically different from the usual swing door, but at the same time it is somewhat similar to sliding interior compartment type ones. Distinctive feature accordions - its canvas consists of several parts and folds when the door is closed.

Main components of the design:

  • thrust tires;
  • guide bar;
  • canvas plates;
  • guide slide;
  • corner sliders;
  • lock plate;
  • clips;
  • motion detector;
  • elastic connecting elements;
  • decorative overlays on adhesive tape;
  • pen.

IN homemade products the lamellas are connected by hinges.

Advantages and disadvantages

What are the benefits of such interior doors? We can highlight the following advantages of the accordion-type design:

  • does not visually burden the space;
  • wide range of models and variety of materials used;
  • allows you to save space, since no space is required to swing the door open; it moves along the opening along sliding system with sliders;
  • lightness of design due to the use of thin plates of lightweight materials;
  • simple installation - since it is quite easy to assemble the accordion door and install it, you can do all the work yourself.

However, in addition to the obvious advantages, accordion-type doors also have several disadvantages. Firstly, they do not provide proper heat and sound insulation. Secondly, at its core it is a rather flimsy design. If handled roughly and poorly installed, its parts can quickly fail. Moreover, not everyone likes this type of appearance opening. Therefore, before buying a door, weigh the pros and cons.

Preparing for installation

Before installing the accordion door, it is necessary to carry out a series of preparatory work. First you need to completely prepare the doorway. Remove the old interior doors along with the frame. Level the slopes and plaster them. Since installing an accordion door involves attaching a guide and support strips, you need to level it and make the surface as flat as possible.

Before you make a door or go to the store to buy it, you need to take measurements from the opening. Be sure to measure its width and height.

Please note: the accordion door may have different quantities plates If you like a particular model, but it is too wide for your opening, you can simply not install one of its plates.

If you are installing accordion doors yourself, you will need the following tools:

  • screwdriver;
  • roulette;
  • hacksaw;
  • lubricant (usually included in the kit).

How can you do everything on your own to avoid mistakes? The work is carried out in several stages: assembling plates, frames and hanging the door.

Before installation, it is necessary to secure the roller guide at the top of the doorway

How to assemble an accordion door

The accordion door can be purchased ready-made in disassembled form. In this case, the product must be accompanied by assembly and installation instructions. Alternative option- do it yourself. This will allow you to realize any idea. You can use the following materials:

  • plastic;
  • laminate;
  • glass;

Of course, a wide range and various price categories allow you to take a simpler path and purchase already ready product. In this case, you can save money by doing the assembly and installation yourself.

MDF is often used to make accordion doors.

Accordion doors: instructions for assembly and installation of plates:

  1. Measure the height of the doorway. If necessary, trim all vertical parts of the structure. Check the widths.
  2. Glue decorative trims to the trimmed bottom of the door.
  3. Next, attach the guide slide to the lock plate using screws.
  4. Install the corner sliders along the edge of the plates.
  5. Connect the plates so that they pass through the connecting elements. Secure the latter with screws.

Once you have managed to assemble the accordion door, you can proceed to the next stage of installation.

The rollers are attached to the top of the door leaf sequentially through one panel

Installation

Do-it-yourself installation of an accordion door begins with determining the position of the motion limiter. To do this, you need to completely fold the product, measure its width and drill a hole in the guide at the appropriate distance. The next step is installing the box. It consists of an upper guide and side rails.

A properly installed accordion door looks very presentable

Accordion interior doors: how to install with your own hands, step-by-step instructions:

  1. Place the top rail against the wall in the opening and mark its position.
  2. Then, at a distance corresponding to the center of the strip, make marks for the installation clips. They are necessary to assemble the box.
  3. Drill the required number of holes. At the edges you need to place one clip with a distance of 1 cm from the wall, and after 5-7 cm - another one. Then increase the step to 15-16 cm. Keep a straight line.
  4. Next, the side clips are installed. Near the thrust bar, the distance between the fastening elements is maintained in increments of 30-40 cm.
  5. On the side of the locking plate, smaller clips are attached at a distance of 70 and 100 cm.
  6. In order to install the door into the opening, insert the sliders into the groove of the guide, lubricating them in advance to ensure easy movement of the plates.
  7. Install the guide onto the clips.
  8. Attach the edge of the door to the side clips.
  9. Also install the lock plate in the opening using a similar method.

According to the principle of layout, the accordion door is similar to its accordion item of the same name. The canvases, one after another, smoothly fold or straighten like accordion bellows. They help save room space because when they open, they reduce their size by two to three times, remaining in the opening. There is, of course, an inconvenience if the doorway is narrow, and even the panels reduce its width. But in general, this is compensated by the ability to reduce the presence of the facade in small room.

The accordion door looks aesthetically pleasing in any design.

Today, the accordion door has become relevant not only as an economical option, but also as an individual designer decor. The accordion layout system is used for shower cabins, protecting the premises from water; for cabinets that are installed in narrow rooms; for dressing rooms, hiding them behind exquisite decor. Accordion doors can divide space like interior partitions, folding along the entire length and completely opening the room, if necessary.

Factories produce different models of accordion doors based on the internal filling of the leaves. These can be MDF panels, plastic, fabric, mirror, glass, or less often wood. Solid wood is a heavy material, even when perfectly dried. The fittings may simply not withstand heavy fabrics. If solid wood is used in the production of accordions, it is with a reinforced system for running the blade on rails or using veneer on a thin base.

The design features of accordion doors are not varied. These are rectangular canvases different sizes. Width starts from 100 mm and more. The smallest opening that will allow you to install an accordion door should not be narrower than 600 mm. The rest is a matter of imagination and the width of the opening.

It is necessary to choose high-quality structures that have a reliable foundation. The frame of the panels must be rigid so that it does not fall apart under accidental force.

Accessories for accordion doors can be purchased at any specialized department.

The fittings are always sold as a set; they can only vary in the number of panels depending on the width of the opening. The accordion package always includes an upper guide and a roller system. For massive structures, a bottom rail is also used so that the product does not sag under heavy load. The lower part is usually recessed into the floor and does not interfere with the movement of users.

Minimal gaps are needed only at the top and bottom of the canvas for ease of movement of the accordion along the rails.

  1. After dismantling the old set and preparing the opening, we take measurements of the height and width. The store sells an accordion door in a set of the number of panels corresponding to the width of the future structure. But you will have to adjust the height of the panels and the length of the guide according to the location. Sometimes an accordion covers a space with a width more than a meter. Then a double-leaf accordion can be chosen, i.e. the doors will open right/left at the same time so that the structure is not heavy.
  2. Before you start installing the accordion door with your own hands, decide in which direction you need to open the facade.
  3. Options for installing top fittings.
  4. You can install the guide using self-tapping screws by first drilling holes in in the right places, installing dowels under the fasteners.
  5. We measure the width of the opening, cut off the required length if the profile is larger than necessary.
  6. Install the strip to the top surface of the opening. If there are no holes, make them yourself using a drill and a drill bit of the required diameter.
  7. We install the vertical profiles in the same way, sawing off the height if necessary.
  8. The second method of installing horizontal and vertical profiles with your own hands is distinguished by the presence of clip-locks that allow you to snap the bar into place using a mallet.
  9. Drill holes in the wall, install the bottom part of the clip. Attach the other half of the lock to the profile.

  1. We take measurements of the height of the opening.
  2. We measure the required length on the canvas, making allowances for the depth of the profile, leaving a gap from the floor.
  3. We cut off the excess, repeating the procedure with all panels.
  4. Let's move on to connecting the panels to each other. For this purpose, special hinges are provided that allow the door to fold and open again. Depending on the weight of the panels and the permissible load, two or three connecting loops can be installed on the surfaces.
  5. Lay out the canvases in the desired sequence on the floor. They should fit tightly against each other so that no gaps appear in the hung position.
  6. Check the compatibility of the panels along the top and bottom lines.
  7. We drill holes for fastening with a loop. Sometimes the hinges are replaced by an end and vertical profile, which allows you to combine the elements of an accordion door with your own hands in a matter of minutes. You just need to follow the recommendations in the printed instructions.
  8. The accordion door kit includes metal mount, into which all the canvases are inserted one after another, forming a single plane.
  9. A roller or several rollers are placed at the end of the profile under the facade, allowing the entire canvas to move without problems.
  10. When assembling the accordion in single design, pay attention to the location of the edge panels. The lock part will contain a lock and a handle. The edge panel will fit into a vertical profile installed on the wall of the opening.
  11. Having assembled a single canvas, we proceed to the stage of hanging the accordion on the guide profile at the top of the opening.
  12. Sometimes it is difficult to insert the rollers and stoppers into the guide due to the close proximity of the jamb. Then there is an option to install the guide profile only on the middle screw, so that it becomes possible to move it to the side to insert the fasteners into the groove.
  13. We return the profile to its place.
  14. We check the operation of the accordion door. Movement should be light and silent.

Installing handle and lock

The handle should be slightly offset from the edge of the accordion door, because the panel fits into the vertical profile, tightly adjacent to the wall. Close installed handle may prevent the accordion door from sealing tightly.
  2. Once again we check that the blade runs smoothly and that there are no cracks or distortions.
  3. When choosing interior door an accordion with a system of upper and lower profiles included, it is necessary to secure the lower rail before installing the canvas.
  4. It is usually recessed into the floor in the threshold area. The length corresponds to the width of the opening.
  5. When installing, the bottom set of wheels is wound up first and then connected to the top rail.
  6. Floors must be perfectly level. If there are unevenness or slopes, it is necessary to level the surface to avoid failure of the accordion door.
  7. After completing the DIY accordion door installation, take care of decorative trims around the interior portal on both sides.
