How to make drywall niches in the wall with your own hands? How drywall niches are assembled: simple instructions, plus a photo report How to properly drywall niche

How to assemble a plasterboard niche in the wall for curtains and under the TV. A detailed description of the stages of work on installing the structure in the wall.

A niche in the wall serves as a multifunctional department in the interior of the living space. How to make a drywall niche with your own hands? It's very simple. It takes a little effort, patience, and a modern design approach will serve its functionality for a long time.

This is what a backlit niche looks likeBack to index

Niches come in various sizes and non-standard shapes. It has a shallow depth for a picture or photo, or a deeper niche for a GKL TV. A niche in an apartment can be:

  • To divide a room into zones;

  • Installing a TV or music center;

  • Shelf for books or collection;

  • To put furniture;

  • For custom design.

You can make a drywall niche in any room of the living space. Will it be a hall or a bathroom. In each room, this niche will perform very important functions.

In residential premises, you can see decorative niches made of drywall. They are located in the living room, in the bedroom and above the window. Their direct function is the originality of the design approach, as well as the division of the room into zones. Vases are placed on the shelves made of plasterboard, paintings are hung on plasterboard walls. Basically, such niches are illuminated with spotlights.

A plasterboard niche that performs direct functions is mainly located in the bathroom for hygiene products; in the bedroom, a closet is made from such a niche.

It looks like a closet built into a niche

A drywall niche can increase the space, visually, of course. If the niche is made in horizontal design, the wall becomes wide. In the case of a vertical project, the wall increases upwards.

The room looks interesting interior, If top part the curtains are hidden and the backlight is installed. Most people are interested in the question: how to make a niche for drywall curtains? This is also done simply, a box for lighting is created in the plasterboard ceiling.

The appearance of a niche for curtains

How to make a niche under the eaves? This design has various sizes and forms. The easiest way is to make a box on the ceiling under the backlight near the window. Its walls will serve as a niche for curtains.

An interesting fact is that niches for drywall eaves can be done by hand.

If there is no opportunity or time, then how to make a niche in the drywall wall? Call a team of craftsmen and describe your desires and preferences. Masters will initially create sketches and drawings, which are corrected, and clarify the details of mounting the frame.

RULE! Before working on creating a niche, you need to decide what it is for.

Preparatory work

To get started preparatory work, you need to establish yourself with a niche design. It will be very good if you make a sketch of this component of the room.

  • After the sketch, you can proceed to the drawing.
  • To do this, you need to prepare the room (free up space to create a niche).
  • Make all measurements.

    TV niche dimensions

  • It is required to clarify how deep the niche will be (it depends on its functionality).
  • If the niche will be made for the installation of equipment, the depth should be made larger (for air ventilation and wire removal). Otherwise, the same TV may heat up and burn out.
  • A TV or other electrical equipment should not be “bulging” out of a niche. The facade of the technique is on the same level with the edges of the niche.
  • In the drawing, write the weight of the item installed on the niche shelf. If it's not a closet.
  • And you should also immediately decide on the wiring of wires under the drywall. This is especially true if there is a backlight.

Required material and tools

For the assigned work, the following materials and tools are needed:

  1. Profile: guide and rack.
  2. Small self-tapping screws.
  3. Screwdrivers - flat and curly.
  4. Drill.
  5. Dowel.
  6. Construction level and a simple pencil.
  7. Roulette.
  8. Plumb.
  9. Hacksaw.
  10. Build a knife with a set of blades.
  11. Pliers.
  12. Hammer.
  13. Scissors for cutting metal.
  14. Putty for drywall "Start", "Finish".
  15. Drywall.
  16. Glue for drywall.
  17. Dye.
  18. Needle roller.
  19. spatula.
  20. Everything you need for wiring (wires, terminals, lamps, switches and sockets in drywall).

RULE! Do not ignore the level and plumb, doing everything "by eye". This is fraught with unevenness, which cannot be called a design invention.

The main stages of work with step-by-step instructions

Initially, you should not only draw up a drawing and assemble everything you need, but also choose the material from which the niche will be made. It can be a tree or a metal profile. Wood has some disadvantages: with drops temperature regime it can shrink or swell, which will eventually lead to deformation of the structure.

Profile for drywall can be from different materials manufacturing. Aluminum is the best. It's easy to work with and cheap.

Drywall

There are three types of drywall in the construction markets: ceiling, wall, moisture resistant (green). Should you decide which one you need? It depends on the location of the niche. If a niche is planned from drywall in the bathroom, then you should choose a "green" GKL. Well, if to divide the room into zones, then you need to look at the thickness of the drywall sheet.

markup

This will require the previously created drawing. Write each number on the wall. Only if the drawing was made on a regular sheet, then on the wall it is necessary to measure the real data and draw lines on them.

Base

In order for the profile to fit snugly against the wall, alignment should be done base surface. This should not be done carefully and under the "ruler". The main thing is that when attaching the profile there are no distortions or large gaps.

Electric wires

If a backlit plasterboard niche is planned, then you need to think in advance how the wiring will go: under the baseboard or in the wall.

Installation of a frame from a metal profile

The principle of installation will consist of what niche should be. If a small-sized design is expected, then it will be better if the frame is assembled first, and then it is already attached.

If niche big size, then it is going step by step. On the wall, according to the markup, carrier profiles are attached. These fasteners play an important role in the design ( appearance and exposure under instruments or books).

Metal frame for TV niche

RULE! If the structure reaches the floor, then there are few wall profiles; the profile should also be fixed to the floor. This will give stability.

For a more accurate understanding of how the installation of the frame is done, you can watch the video.

Installing shelves and stiffeners

For the manufacture of a niche of a large size, strong and wide profiles are required.

When creating a frame for shelves, you need to make a frame of the desired size from the profile and attach it to the base. In order to bend the profile, the side part should be cut.

Attaching a profile to a host

If the frame is long in size, then it must be fixed with jumpers. They are installed at intervals of 400 mm. in the case of using 2 such frames, it is possible to make a hanging cabinet.

By attaching the frame to the floor with the help of profiles, a base is obtained for the production of a niche in the wall.

Attaching the frame to the floor for the base of the niche

In order to make an original curvilinear design, it is necessary to use a flexible profile and a regular one. Some profiles have some kind of "locks", which is very convenient when creating structures.

Drywall niche sheathing technology

Before starting drywall sheathing, you should protect yourself by wearing a face mask or goggles.

You can cut a drywall sheet with a construction knife, as well as an electric jigsaw. Each part must be applied to the frame so that it is not smaller or larger than the prescribed size.

In order to cut the drywall sheet into strips, you need to correctly measure the length and height. GKL is very easy to cut; for this, a drywall knife is drawn along the marked line and the sheet breaks with a slight blow.

Each part of drywall must be attached in accordance with the sketch. Caps of self-tapping screws or other fasteners should be pressed tightly against the sheet so that they do not “stick out” above the surface. But you should not overdo it either, the sheet may burst. If there is a small part, then the self-tapping screw is screwed in approximately in the middle so that the drywall does not break.

When lining a curved frame for a gypsum board arch, drywall needs to be bent in the desired radius. To do this, the edges of the sheet are notched, and after mounting they are puttied. There is also the option of bending the sheet into a semicircle with water. Here you should pass a spiked roller along the drywall part, then sprinkle it with water and leave it to dry in a special form. After 12 hours, the drywall sheet takes on the desired shape.

Bending drywall to the desired shape

If cracks have started during bending, they need to be puttied using a reinforced mesh.

Backlight

In the case of niche lighting, it is better to use an LED strip. Installing a lamp is a more time-consuming task:

  • It is required to make a hole in the niche, and this will be difficult to do with small recesses.
  • It is required to calculate the power going to each lamp.

This is what the backlight looks like in a nicheBack to index

Drywall niche finishing

First of all, you should putty the places where the fasteners occur. The surface must be level and no spots visible. The boundaries of drywall joints should be cut (chamfered) at an angle of 25 degrees, and then sealed with a sickle mesh, which is glued to glue or a thin layer of putty. It is well pressed in at the boundary, and the surface is brought to a perfectly flat surface. If you do not make cuts at the joints, then a bump will appear during puttying, and a lot of material and strength will be required to level it.

It is necessary to putty the places where the fasteners occur

Niche corners. In this case, a chamfer is made on drywall using a drywall planer. The chamfer angle is 45 degrees. After that, the chamfer must be sanded with a rasp.

As a result, everything is puttied with “Finish” and processed from small pebbles and stripes. After drying, you should walk with a primer in order to glue the wallpaper or paint the structure.

Niche decoration options

To make the niche individual and look beautiful, you can apply various materials for decoration: mirror, wallpaper, paint, fabric.

There are some decorating rules:

  • Tones should be light. If the tone is dark, it will visually reduce and darken the room.
  • Basically, a niche is made in the same tone as the wall. Less common, 2 shades darker than the main color.
  • If mirrors are inserted, they make the space larger.

A selection of photos of the design of a drywall niche in the wall

In this master class you will find detailed description the process of installing kitchen walls and ventilation according to finished design project. We will talk about the features of mounting a false wall with a niche using the “from the center” method and give detailed photos this work done by experienced professionals.

A drywall niche is a popular and spectacular interior element. It can have a different shape, but invariably emphasizes the taste of the owner of the house. We will tell and show you how to make it yourself.

If you don't have a professional design ready, create a drawing or sketch with dimensions. In this way, your thoughts and desires will take shape.

Please note that the niche parameters in this case are determined by the size of the tile with which the inside will be lined.

After transferring the marks to the wall plane, we begin to fix the guides. This key moment, since further dimensions will be postponed from them.

We create the main frame from the UD profile and check its corners - they must be strictly straight. You can use tiles to check.

Then we cut out and wind the plasterboard strips, which will limit the inner plane of the niche.

We install horizontal guides, which we connect with vertical racks. In this case, the frame is not built from a common plane, but from the center of the element (niche).

Again we check how the tile enters. If there is an error, it is better to eliminate it at this stage.

Attention! When trying on tiles, consider the thickness of the putty 2–3 mm.

Pay attention to the vertical strapping of the frame and rails. They are installed after the horizontal stripes.

Thus, fastening and tying the entire structure is much more reliable than if the entire frame was made separately.

We mark the horizontal guides for the vertical ribs (step 600 mm).

We install the ribs themselves along the lower guide, first on internal fastenings, and then we bring U-shaped suspensions under them.

View of the finished frame without the top row of vertical racks (done in the same way as the bottom one):

We sheathe the frame with drywall using standard technology.

Pay attention to how corners are cut in openings and niches (a convenient way). First, we wind the sheet as a whole.

Then cut it horizontally with a hacksaw.

And cut vertically with a knife. This method does not require marking and insures against mistakes when marking - the GKL is cut in place, and one of the niche planes serves as a guide.

Final view after installation of drywall:

It remains to prepare the plane for puttying. We embroider the corners with a plaster float and the joints with a knife.

Carefully checking the accuracy of the horizontals and verticals, we sew a perforated corner with a stapler.

The final view of the drywall niche:

If in your case there is a need to use a wall for hanging something, be sure to install reinforcements - double ribs. At the same time, U-shaped suspensions should be of a different class - more powerful. In the future, the niche can be given any 3D view using various methods finishes and decorations - tiles, wallpaper, curtains, artificial stone.

    • How to make a niche from GKL with your own hands?
  • How are wide niches made of drywall for a bed created?
  • How to use the tools when working with GKL?

Modern interiors are often done using drywall, which is becoming very common. This is due to the fact that such facing material has a low cost. Often, with the help of gypsum boards, they not only align the ceilings with the walls, but also create original drywall niches in the wall, which visually increase the space of the premises.

With the help of drywall, you can not only level the ceilings and floors, but also create original niches in the walls.

In some cases, sheets of finishing material allow you to expand usable space residential premises with a specific purpose, including bathrooms. This is possible with the use of sheets of waterproof drywall.

Niche tools and materials

Knowing how to make a drywall niche in the wall of a room, you should prepare the appropriate tools with materials, the list of which includes:

  1. Special safety goggles.
  2. Hacksaw.
  3. Building level.
  4. Side cutters.
  5. Roulette.
  6. Pliers.
  7. Metal scissors.
  8. Hammer.
  9. Knife with replaceable blade.
  10. Perforator.
  11. Putty.
  12. Fastener (dowel-nails).
  13. Screwdriver.
  14. Bulgarian.
  15. Drywall sheets.

Drywall installation tools

Any master, even a beginner, can make niches in a drywall wall. The design of the structure is preliminarily developed, and all dimensions are transferred to the drawing. The master must have an accurate idea not only of how to make a drywall niche, but also of how it will look in the interior of the room.

All this will allow you to make an accurate calculation of the required amount of material in order to purchase it at no extra cost. At the same time, the use of additional construction and finishing materials, For example:

  1. Clay.
  2. Colors.
  3. Construction mix of dry type.
  4. Electrical tool.
  5. Needle roller, etc.

The easiest option is to install one niche in a wall made of plasterboard, but you can mount two or more niches in one design. When planning the placement of a niche in the wall, the lining of the structure is moved a certain distance, which is equal to the size of its depth. The width of the entire structure may not be very large, for example, 15 cm. Installation of a drywall niche should begin when the wall is marked according to the diagram. Then a metal profile is installed, taking into account the entire perimeter of the future niche.

How to make a niche from GKL with your own hands?

Mounting scheme metal frame under drywall.

It is convenient to cut a metal profile using a grinder or metal scissors. It is important to set it up correctly. For this purpose, a tape measure is used building level. You can strengthen the profile with the help of mounting umbrellas (dowel-nails). Making a niche that is not very wide, you can use a guide profile (NP) or use a rack profile (SP).

Then proceed to the assembly of the frame. It is more convenient to set the guide profile from the floor of the room. All work is performed using a tape measure, which can be measured required size. Measurements are made from the surface of the base wall using a tape measure, taking into account the thickness of the plasterboard.

The traditional dimensions of drywall are 2500x1200x12.5 mm. When all the marks are made, they are connected by drawing special lines. It is required to transfer all marks for the ceiling NP (guide profile) using a plumb line. When assembling the frame, the rack profiles of the required size are installed vertically. The installation of the upper and lower guide profiles is also carried out.

The standard profile length is 3 m, so it should be cut. The height of the profile is measured separately, since it differs by 1-1.5 cm in different parts of the room. This is due to the presence of errors allowed during the construction of any premises. Using the level, you should ensure that the racks are located strictly vertically.

Scheme of a niche with hidden lighting.

Only after that, the frame elements are fixed with the help of dowel-nails. If necessary, the frame is assembled using only the guide profile. Making the transition to the floor from the wall, it is enough to make an incision with scissors to bend the profile at an angle of 90 degrees.

Having exposed the profile, it is fixed on the wall, after which vertical racks are installed with jumpers horizontally between them, taking into account the size of the niche.

Then you should install jumpers from the racks towards the wall. When arranging these niches over the entire surface of the wall, it is required to create a sufficiently reliable frame. Jumpers alone cannot do without additional profiles.

How are wide niches made of drywall for a bed created?

Before creating a drywall niche, a design should be developed so that the metal profile is combined with the gypsum plasterboard. For example, furniture walls are considered well known - slides that are multi-level. They can be made independently from drywall sheets.

The profile with the highest strength is selected. You can make niches of large sizes if you use a profile with a back width of 75 mm. For example, the German manufacturer Knauf makes reliable products using the thickest metal.

Scheme of the correct docking of drywall sheets.

To create a frame for shelves, you can use a piece of profile that is solid. To do this, a frame is bent from this material, having the shape of a rectangle, reinforced with dowel-nails to the wall. In the required place for bending, only the side of the profile can be incised. After that, the adjacent sidewalls are fastened using self-tapping screws or a cutter.

If the frame is long enough, it should be reinforced with cross jumpers, which are separated from each other at a distance of not more than 400 mm. Using two frames, you can make a frame for a wall cabinet if you fasten them with jumpers. By reinforcing the frames to the floor with the help of profiles, you can get a base for creating a niche in the wall. If these types of structures are combined, then you can make it yourself different kinds built-in furniture with niches with shelves.

For creating original designs a flexible profile is used, for example, manufactured by Flext. All its sections include two halves, shaped like the letter "L". They have special locks at the ends. As a result of installation, a profile of the required length is created, which makes it possible to manufacture a structure that has a closed or arbitrary shape. Combining the Flext profile and the usual type of profile, they are used to create a frame for walls made of gypsum boards with round or oval niches, etc.

How to use the tools when working with GKL?

Be sure to wear protective goggles before working with GKL. Cutting is carried out using a clerical knife and an electric jigsaw. You can grind and level the sheet with a hacksaw and planer.

It is better to cut the drywall into strips, the length of which is equal to the length of the sheet, together. Then note the required size with front side GKL, apply a profile to the marks to make an incision with a knife. It is enough to hit the back of the sheet with your hand so that it breaks at the place of the cut. Then a knife is passed through reverse side sheet.

The cut sheet is separate parts that have the appropriate dimensions. These parts are niche structural elements made strictly according to the drawing. Each joint should be treated with putty. After that, a thin layer is applied, pressing a special mesh into it to reinforce the structure. An additional layer of putty is applied on top, but paper tapes can also be used, they are lowered into the water and laid evenly so that there are no wrinkles.

All heads of self-tapping screws are puttied. When the whole structure is dry, apply finishing putty. To obtain a bent drywall arc, it should be sprayed with water and rolled with a spiked roller. When lining a niche, drywall is attached using special glue, cutting out pieces of plasterboard of the required shape.

Drywall niche- phenomenon in construction technologies fairly new, but won great popularity.

IN living room, for example, it not only serves as an element of decor, but has practical benefit, as it can replace cabinets and shelves for books, souvenirs and other things.

That is, by installing a drywall niche, you actually kill three birds with one stone: decorate apartment, save on furniture and hide possible defects and irregularities in the wall.

Such multifunctionality and makes this building structure so popular.

Drywall niche in the interior

Niche in the bedroom

Currently a very popular solution for design interiors of residential premises is the installation of drywall niches in bedroom.

Typically, such structures are Over the bed, but also occurs another variant, when a niche is made from the floor and a bed is inserted into it.

This interesting decorative element gives the room a special cosiness, especially if equipped with an additional backlight.

Note: to enhance the effect, you can install an aquarium in a niche, and then plants and fish will create a constantly changing picture. Such a design, among other things, will have a relaxing effect.

Niche for TV

With the advent flat TVs It was convenient to hang them directly on the wall. Some users are limited to this, others believe that the best option would be niche from plasterboard for TV.

This design will not only beautiful And stylish design walls around the "blue screen", but will also allow you to conveniently place next to it, related equipment - speakers, a DVD player, as well as a music center, CD and DVDs, books, etc.

In addition, a TV niche won't allow accidentally touch and roll an expensive device off the support.

Let's consider advantages of such niches over other options and disadvantages.
Advantages:

  1. Simple execution such a design in front of other species;
  2. Hiding wiring under parts of drywall;
  3. Safety for the TV and the inability to roll it off the bracket;
  4. Any drywall niche can be made configuration- both rectangular and arcuate;
  5. Under drywall, you can hide any wall defects;
  6. Without additional purchases, you get for your use set of shelves and lockers.

Flaws:

  1. At the time of buying other model TV, it may turn out that your niche does not fit sizes. That is, either it will be too big, or the TV simply will not fit into it. Therefore, when installing a niche, such a possible problem should be taken into account;
  2. At permutation furniture, in which your TV will also participate, you will have to take apart niche or use it for another purpose.

Niche for curtains

An excellent design solution is niche for curtains.

Agree that when installing a new double-glazed window, wallpapering and installation two-level ceilings, tires peeking out from under the curtains do not look very presentable.

by the most simple option there will be an opportunity for them hide.

A drywall niche will allow fully hide this shortcoming and significantly improve the design of your room.

This design will not only become a beautiful decoration, but also visually will increase ceiling height due to the fact that cornice for curtains will disappear from view.

Partition with niches

For zoning premises in apartments and private houses are used partition with niches.

Sometimes there is a desire somehow change the layout of the apartment, for example, to separate living room from the dining room or share children's room into two halves.

This task is excellent for partition with niches from drywall.

For one-room apartments, such a design will be a real way out, because with its help you can divide room on hall And bedroom.

boxes and shelves in such a partition can be usefully used to place books, souvenirs, vase with flowers or toys.

In addition, a partition with niches is significantly will improve the design your apartment, as it will give it a stylish and modern view.

Partition with plasterboard niches

Do-it-yourself drywall niche

If you think that build do-it-yourself drywall niche is an impossible task, then you are deeply mistaken. Such work really fulfill even non-professional, and now we will try to prove it.

To begin with, you must decide on size, location and design the created structure. Without this, you should not start, because correcting your own flaws later it will be very difficult.

You can even do a simple drawing for greater convenience in future work.

materials

For work you will need the following materials:

  • drywall;
  • profiles(rack and guide);
  • dowel(in our case, we need 6 by 80 and 6 by 60);
  • suspensions;
  • self-tapping screws.

markup

Having acquired the material, we proceed to markup. To do this, you need to draw the outline of your niche on the wall.

Then we carry out fixation profile along the line. In the event that the outlines of the structure have more than complex composition than a regular rectangle, the fastening of adjacent segments should occur by using additional strips.

Frame installation

First you need to screw the guide profile to the wall using self-tapping screws. It will be dorsal part of your framework.

Then you need to mount guides to the floor and, as necessary, to ceiling.

Your next step is to install main profile which is also needed fix using self-tapping screws.

After doing this, you need to check strength the resulting design.

If the framework fixed correctly and cannot be separated, then you can proceed to the next step.

Plasterboard sheathing

In order to built-in niches have acquired a complete look, you need sheathe your frame with drywall sheets.

Make this work like this:

  1. Cut out drywall details size calculated by you;
  2. Using self-tapping screws, fasten them to frame;
  3. For correct fixing with self-tapping screws, you need to make sure that their hats are a little buried in the sheets;
  4. When plating, we monitor evenness docking sheets, especially corners.

Finishing work

You need to know that a niche for a TV or for another purpose ends with the implementation putty works.

To do this, first with a spatula overwrite sutures, then apply reinforcing tape and we apply putty on it (you can learn more about how to properly putty walls from this article).

Then, after removing the reinforcing tape, clean up fine-grained seams sandpaper and apply again layer putties.

Waiting for complete drying of the last layer, we process the seam sandpaper again.

After processing the seams, we proceed to puttying the niche itself. To do this, use a large » class=»glossaryLink» target=»_blank»> spatula and special blend.

Note: instead of a special mixture, you can use a diluted universal putty.

The final stage will be painting niches in the color you want or wallpapering(For information on how to glue wallpaper on drywall, read here).

Niche with backlight

If you took care of the wiring before sheathing, then niche with lighting becomes a very feasible task. To do this, you need to set in advance cooked cutouts for fixtures by connecting them to a hidden niche wiring.

Niche with backlight

Often, instead of lighting fixtures, they use led strip. On drywall box they can be fixed with ordinary transparent adhesive tape.

How to make a drywall niche with your own hands, see video:

The decor of modern housing is not an easy task, it is often necessary to equip and decorate the space of the room enough big amount useful items, and at the same time not to lose vital space. Therefore, all the most expensive and important items get a residence permit on shelves or niches in a plasterboard wall.

For ordinary person who started a design version of the repair in the house, sheet drywall can be considered a gift of fate. The extreme simplicity of working with drywall walls with considerable possibilities for implementing the most interesting solutions design makes GKL the most popular material in the manufacture of plasterboard walls with niches.

Why are drywall niches so popular?

It so happened in the apartment samostroy that niches in plasterboard walls allow you to get advantages in the perception of the interior over furniture delights:

  • Get rid of hinged shelves on walls, whatnots or intricate coasters that greatly eat up the usable volume of the room;
  • Raise the most necessary things in life and pleasing to the eye on the walls, thereby giving them a new content, and updating the appearance by simply replacing some items in the niches with others;
  • Often, niches in plasterboard walls make it possible not to use heavy furniture cabinets or other similar home “architecture”, while successfully zoning the territory with architectural “highlights”.

For your information ! The use of walls with a variety of drywall niches will allow you to correctly distribute the usable space of the room, periodically change the decor and interior of the room for a short time and at low cost.

Such experiments can hardly even be called a redevelopment of an apartment or room. Moreover, an unusual building in the living room with a niche in the drywall wall can be the most impressive impression of the interior renovation or renovation.

What are drywall niches

For the most part, niches allow you to "drown" some of the objects or even a piece of room space into the walls, a simple technique and quite often used in one-room apartments.

Most often, decorative niches are made in a plasterboard wall. Stylish things, even antiques, are additionally purchased for such projects, and interior items are often rearranged.

A simple idea will help to successfully refresh the look of the walls or enhance the feeling of comfort in any corner of the apartment:

Advice ! The classics of the genre have long been arches, combined with plasterboard walls - partitions and emphatically utilitarian wall niches for everyday items.

We divide the space in the room into personal and joint

Using a drywall wall with a niche is almost the only affordable way to create comfortable conditions for work if there is a teenager in the house. The feeling of individualism and the desire to have the boundaries of your inviolable territory can be supported by a small drywall construction, while you do not have to partition off an apartment or room with a wall of many furniture or wooden screens, curtains or doors.

But such options will require knowledge of the basics of home construction of plasterboard walls, otherwise niches and openwork racks will make the structure weak and fragile.

We emphasize the recreation area

In addition to walls with niches and windows that allow a child or an elderly person to allocate his living space, a similar technique is used to isolate the recreation area and its holy of holies - sleeping places, an aquarium or a TV. In the latter case, drywall niches in the walls are generally out of competition due to the wide distribution of flat plasma or liquid crystal models.

For your information! An interesting feature of drywall niches and walls is their relative facelessness.

An empty structure has nothing of its own until objects or things appear in it. Further, the drywall product turns into a frame or wrapper, skillfully emphasizing the style and character of the main subject.

A furniture stand or cabinet already has its own style and design, often with modern TV looks archaic or bad taste.

How to make a niche in a drywall wall

For a high level of decor, ideal Smooth surface walls and the correct direction of lighting or additional lighting. It is not difficult if you try to take into account all the requirements for building a niche in a drywall wall.

Working with drywall in the manufacture of walls, partitions, arches or niches does not require exorbitant qualifications of the worker, only accuracy and an accurate understanding of the goal are needed.

If the plane is decorative drywall wall or its elements is provided by factory-made flat planes of the material, then in matters of lighting direction you have to break your head. Often, to ensure the desired effect, it is necessary to use two types of lighting. Applying sunlight or monochrome light under warm or cold color rooms can be achieved visual magnification the space of the room during the day and the opposite effect in the evening or night hour.

Niche - TV stand

The reasons for the popularity of drywall niches for the TV were mentioned above, consider the most popular option for making a large decorative structure for a widescreen TV.

How to properly position a niche for a TV

All that needs to be done for future comfortable viewing of programs at any time of the day is to take into account the recommendations of TV manufacturers and the wishes of family members:

  • The design of the niche must be securely fastened to the wall with support on the floor, the main support shelf is calculated and reinforced based on a double margin of safety;
  • In the niche itself there should be plasterboard side walls racks that shade the TV screen from direct sunlight or bright lights;
  • Drywall conducts sound perfectly, which means that in order not to interfere with the rest of the family, it is necessary to use soundproofing from mineral wool or polystyrene, we also place external speakers or speakers in niches with sound insulation.

We assemble and fix the niche frame

We assemble the main frame of the niche-portal from a galvanized profile on a prepared wall and a wall sheathed with plasterboard. Under a niche, it is better to choose a 15 mm GKL sheet, since the dimensions individual elements niches are large enough and are calculated on the weight of the TV up to 10kg in weight.

According to the markup, we sew the main supporting structures of the profile onto the wall and ceiling.

Arches and roundings of the wall can be made of flexible metal inserts, or cuts can be made on the profile of one of the shelves. This will allow you to bend the profile along the required arc. You will have to sew rounded elements with the help of small pieces of drywall sheet.

The most difficult part will be to cut and precisely install the symmetrical rounded posts so that they exactly match the curvature of the left and right sides of the structure. After mounting the vertical racks, we attach the frame of the main shelf and auxiliary drywall niches to the wall for speakers and small items.

We lay soundproofing in the cavity of the walls and sew it up outer surface thin-walled 8 mm sheet.

Puttying and finishing the surface of drywall

Finishing work, as a rule, is no different from standard work with drywall products, but in places where large gaps have formed between sheets of drywall, it is better to use a perforated plastic or aluminum corner to reinforce the putty layer.

We clean the wall in two stages with the removal of the rough layer and polishing in the final version with a fine mesh. After finishing machining We prime the wall with a double layer for painting in the most suitable color.

Drywall is one of the most rewarding materials for design. It is quite easy to handle, and also has a wide range of applications. With the help of GKL, repairs become easier, faster, and the result is more effective. Builders use it to design the ceiling, including several tiers.

Designers design various niches, frames, dividing partitions. Depending on the field of application, the material is divided by thickness into: wall, ceiling, arched.

Types of drywall niches

Drywall niches are relevant and appropriate in any interior style. They can carry several functions:

  • decorative, bearing only aesthetic pleasure;
  • functional, for example, hiding wires from equipment, intended for books, etc.;
  • technical, necessary to ensure an unhindered approach to something.

The design can be different in shape:

  • vertical;
  • horizontal;
  • complex geometric shape;
  • wavy.

Depending on the desired effect, a certain niche configuration is used. For example, to achieve a visual lengthening of the wall, objects, horizontal, narrow niches are used; with low ceilings, vertical ones are designed.

Design Ideas

A drywall niche is an interior detail that is appropriate everywhere: they add relief, depth to the room, serve as additional storage space or a bundle in the general geometric construction lines.

Below are just a few of the design ideas most commonly used by decorators.

A dull and monotonous wall, devoid of furniture, looks dull. fresh decision can become a recessed space to accommodate a plasma or a framed mirror.

Often they make a number of small 3D decors from plasterboard, about 5-7 cm deep, wide construction profile and insert photos, candles, vases,.

Niche instead of furniture

Drywall is so comfortable and durable with the right load distribution that sometimes designers use it instead of furniture.

  • Solution in the form shelves for placing books, household items, equipment often found in interiors. At the same time, different planes are painted in contrasting colors to enhance the effect, some parts are covered with glass.
  • Dressing rooms in the hallways also look modern and beautiful from GKL. Shelves withstand heavy loads while giving additional aesthetic pleasure and ease of use.
  • Location arches around the sofa or portals for a fireplace - beautiful and functional. Sheets of different thicknesses are used for different planes + there are standard sizes carrier profile. Therefore, the minimum depth is the sum of the profile width + sheet thickness + finish.
  • Creation mini dressing room in the bedroom. An interesting design move is the construction of a niche in the middle of the room, which is then closed by a compartment door that goes into the wall. This place is equipped for storing things, like a pantry and so on.
  • Niche under the battery

    Drywall is used to create the depth of the window, ennoble the radiator, as if sinking it visually into the wall.

    Ceiling

    Such designs often hide the mechanisms of the cornices, create a multi-tiered top and hide the LED backlight. The curtain seems to fall out of nowhere, and hidden lamps give romanticism and some mystery to the room.

    Zoning

    • Entire ones are built from drywall. Even half, semi-arched fenced off work zone from the bedroom will allow you to get cozy workplace or just a corner for inspiration. When demolishing the original walls and erecting new ones according to the project, the redevelopment should be recorded in the relevant state bodies.
    • Zoning is important to carry out in nurseries, when there are several children, and there is only one room. Psychologically, each person needs to have his own personal corner.
    • Separation in a studio apartment. Niches in small apartments- the rescue. able to unobtrusively separate the sleeping place-sofa from the kitchen. So, for example, in design development, kitchen furniture is hidden behind a plasterboard bar counter.
    • Types of structures

      The basic principle of building niches is first installation U-shaped profile the required circuit. And then fasteners on top of drywall sheets. The thickness of the latter differs by 12.5 mm, 9.5 mm and 6.5 mm. Based on the foregoing, there are three main design options:

  1. Classical. That is, the formation of a frame, and then a cast-off of its material.
  2. For decorative niches 5 cm deep, the columns do not use a metal profile, but are fixed with a double plasterboard of the required dimensions on top of each other. The ends are putty.
  3. Arched variant. The arc is made by analogy with the classic way with a little adjustment. Cuts are made on the profile and bent in an arc, a sheet of cardboard plastically repeats the rounded contour.

Many people think about how to make a drywall niche on their own. In fact, it is not difficult at all, the main thing is to stick to the plan. Step-by-step instructions will help you get to your goal - a beautiful and neat drywall niche that can decorate any design.

Niche drawing (sketch version)

Information for sketch development:

  • the depth of the niche in the living room (for installing a TV) is equal to its thickness plus the space that the wires will take, electrical sockets. The screen must be flush with the edge of the opening. The same applies to other electrical equipment - only its frontal part should be visible;
  • leave gaps on the sides and top of the niche. Your hands must be free to pass into them, otherwise you simply will not be able to install the technique. The gaps, moreover, will help to avoid overheating of electrical equipment;
  • if the drywall niche is not floor-mounted, but built into the wall, then when laying the profiles of its bearing plane (lower part of the niche), you need to take into account the load that it will perceive. It is one thing if there is a vase in the niche, and another if there is an aquarium with water;
  • immediately determine where the electrical wiring will go - you will have to connect to it if you:
    • plan niche lighting;
    • are going to install TV, audio in the opening.

The sketch will give you a visual idea of how a drywall niche should look like, it will help you calculate the right amount of material. The photo shows an approximate sketch of a rather complex niche, inside of which drywall shelves are made.

Installation of a crate (frame) from a metal profile

To install the crate with your own hands you will need:

  • guide profile ud;
  • rack profile cd;
  • self-tapping screws ("fleas");
  • screwdriver;
  • drill;
  • dowel;
  • building level, pencil;
  • roulette, plumb.

Drywall and profile tools

The main rule of the finisher: if you don’t want alterations, use the building level. We expose the rear plane of the frame according to the sketch dimensions and fasten the guide profile to the floor, walls and ceiling with dowels. We insert and fasten the vertical profile cd into this “frame” in increments of 50 - 60 cm. If the wall is bumpy, then the ud profile is attached to U-shaped suspensions. At the junction of the rack and guide profile, the metal is fastened with “fleas”.

The front plane of the frame. Set aside from the already mounted back plane of the frame a distance equal to the depth of the niche. We draw a line along which the front plane of the frame will pass. We collect the front frame.

Plasterboard niche marking should be carried out in accordance with the horizontal level

Strengthening both flat frame horizontal jumpers from the ud profile. We cut it into equal pieces and insert them between the vertical profiles. We fasten the intersections with two self-tapping screws. Do not forget, in the place where you decide to make a niche, the profiles should form "windows".

We make the frame a three-dimensional structure. We connect the front and back planes of the frame with jumpers (ud profile). Pay attention to the photo. In places where the frame forms a niche, the profile is placed two at a time, and it is deployed in shelves from each other. This gives the structure additional rigidity.

When assembling the frame, it is necessary to control each stage of work with a level, since the slightest discrepancy at the beginning of work can eventually ruin the entire structure

Electrical connection

Planning to do your own lighting? Start now, before the frame is covered with drywall.

Decide on the type of lighting:

  • spot halogen lamps, if the opening is illuminated by several "halogens", then it is better to arrange them with the same step, the size of which depends on the power of the lamp. The connection of wires when connecting spotlights occurs using terminal blocks. From one end, stripped wires of the lamp are inserted into this device, and from the other, an electrical wiring cable;
  • The LED strip practically does not heat up, it is economical, but it is quite expensive. It is connected via a power supply, which most often has to be purchased separately. Be careful when connecting - mix up "+" and "-" and the tape will burn. The LED itself is attached to a sticky layer applied to one of its sides;
  • if the drywall niche will be illuminated by an overhead lamp, then in the frame it is necessary to provide embedded profiles to which the lamp frame will be attached.

Electrical cables are hidden in corrugated hoses (according to the requirements of the PUE). To attach the corrugation to the wall or ceiling, you will need clips (fasteners) and dowels.

Cutting and sheathing the frame with drywall

The easiest of the stages, for those who do everything with their own hands, but it is on it that novice masters make mistakes. Cutting will require all your accuracy and scrupulousness. Make a mistake in transferring dimensions, and the drywall sheet may go to waste. For work you will need: tape measure, drywall knife, rail, pencil. Then everything is simple:

  • put the sheet on the table and mark the outline of the future part;
  • cut: do not put a lot of effort - cut the paper, and the plaster will break easily. Cut through the paper on the other side. Separate the detail.

Drywall cutting options. 1 - planer for drywall; 2 - drywall knife; 3 - hacksaw for drywall; 4 - jigsaw

In order to sheathe the frame, you will need: a screwdriver and self-tapping screws 25 - 40 mm long. The fastening step with self-tapping screws is taken at least 250 mm, and in the niche area - at least 150 mm. We retreat from the edge of the sheet about 1 - 2 cm. When sheathing the frame, make sure that the edge of the part lies on the profile - if you leave it to “sag”, then a crack will definitely appear in this place.

Sheet end processing

There are many places in the niches where drywall sheets meet at right angles. From the ends of such sheets, you need to chamfer at an angle of 45 °. An edge planer for drywall will speed up this stage of work by an order of magnitude. After the edge has been cut, some builders still grind the bevels with a rough planer or hand rasp.

The edges of the sheets that are joined end-to-end are machined at an angle of 25°. Why is this necessary, when filling a niche, a tubercle is formed at the junction of the raw edge. To level it later, you will have to apply a thicker layer of finishing putty. This is hard work if you do everything yourself, so the ends of the sheets are chamfered.

Processing the end face of drywall with a peeling planer

Primer and putty

The order is as follows:

  • we prime all joints of the niche;
  • we cover the joints with a starting putty with a consistency of sour cream. We mark the joint lightly with a spatula and put a reinforcing fiberglass tape on top of the putty. "We smear" it into the mixture. Do not forget to seal the caps of the self-tapping screws, which are especially numerous in the niche area;
  • the second layer of the starting layer of putty is applied the next day. After drying, the joints are cleaned;
  • the finishing putty mixture is applied.

To make the drywall niche look neat, the internal and outside corners it must be closed with a perforated corner. He “sits down” on a thick starting layer. The excess is removed with a spatula. The photo shows an already installed corner, covered with a reinforcing mesh.

The corners of drywall structures are subject to possible damage, therefore, a perforated corner is used to protect them.

Niche decor

To decorate a niche in a plasterboard wall, you can use any decorating coating - paint, mirrors, wallpaper, beautiful fabrics. There are a few simple tips which will be useful to you.

  • give preference light colors- dark openings on light walls will look like holes in cheese. Most often, drywall niches are painted in the same color as the walls, or 1-2 tones darker. Only if the recess is well lit can rich, dark tones be allowed;
  • mirror finish of the opening visually expands its space;
  • color scheme niches within the room should be the same.

Kitchen

Kitchen openings, first of all, carry a functional load, and only then serve as an interior decoration. Microwave, refrigerator, sometimes a washing machine - the kitchen is literally stuffed with appliances, and different in size. But if you hide all this equipment in drywall niches and leave only the facades visible, then the room will acquire a clear geometry - without protrusions and voids. What about pots, jugs, cups, glasses? We will make several shelves-niches along the length of the kitchen with our own hands, and all these utensils will fit perfectly there. An example of this is the photo below.

Living room

Most often, niches are made in the living room to install a TV panel, video and audio equipment in them. The photo shows that it design solution hides a wiring harness under the drywall, which spoils the interior of the living room so much. Mount sockets behind the equipment, in the rear wall of the opening. A full-fledged drywall bookcase does not work out, but a dozen or other favorite books, a do-it-yourself niche-shelf will stand up perfectly.

It happens that drywall niches are equipped for the installation of aquariums. But! It is better not to install large aquariums in them. No matter how well you strengthen the supporting plane of the opening, under the weight of a large aquarium, the profile may bend and the sheet may crack. By the way, do not forget to leave a place above the aquarium for its maintenance and cover it with a decorative panel.

Bedroom

In the bedroom, they almost always make an opening at the head of the bed. Here they hang pictures, panels, glue photo wallpapers or just light them up. But, do not forget that this is decorative, not general lighting - do not put powerful lamps in the recess. If the opening is deep, arrange its space in the form of niche shelves. There will be a place for your knitting, a book or a mobile phone.

In small decorative plasterboard niches, in the bedroom or living room, you can put flowers, vases, souvenirs. The photo shows how original the collection of small paintings looks in the illuminated openings.

Designer "chips"

Design approaches include:

  • a vertical niche from floor to ceiling will not make your ceilings high, but it will create the right impression;
  • horizontal openings visually lengthen the walls;
  • drywall niches are never framed;
  • the smaller the depth of the opening, the smaller should be the objects that are located here;
  • The photo below shows one of design techniques. Such a color scheme visually deepens the niche of the living room, making it voluminous.

We hope that our instructions on how to make a niche with your own hands will help you in the difficult task of installing drywall structures.

Steel drywall niches integral part interior. They are used as a shelf, TV stand or music center. They can perform decorative functions, divide the room into zones. They help to rationally use the space, if they are used to place furnishings. For their manufacture, a minimum of tools, several sheets of drywall, material for the frame and sheathing will be required. With the right color scheme, taking into account the design style, the niche will harmoniously fit into the overall design and become the highlight of the situation.

Types of drywall niches - functional purpose

IN modern interiors often use niches in the wall. They differ in shape, size, functional purpose. The material for them is drywall. Due to its lightness, ease of processing, you can embody the original design ideas.

The niche can be used:

  • for installation of household appliances and equipment;
  • for dividing a room into zones;
  • as a shelf for books;
  • as a design element;
  • as built-in furniture.

You can build them in any room where they will perform their intended functions. Often equipped in living rooms, halls, bedrooms. They install a TV or music centers, use shelves for books and various trifles. With the help of structures, a room is divided into zones. They look original if they are illuminated with LED strip, spotlights or candles.

In the bathroom, a drywall niche serves as furniture for storing hygiene products and bath accessories; in the bedroom, a closet is made of it. In the kitchen, you can put it away household appliances and other equipment. This will make the room more inviting.

With the help of recesses, you can visually change the space. The horizontal arrangement of niches makes the wall wide, the vertical one adds height. A hidden cornice for curtains in a plasterboard box on the ceiling and illuminated with LEDs will make the room unique. Designs give various shapes, sizes, select the color of the finish under color scheme premises.

Preparatory work

Having decided on the functional purpose of the niche, they begin to choose a place and create drawings. Perform measurements, taking into account the volume and installation of the frame: width, height, depth, distance from the corner and floor level. To reduce waste, the design should take into account the dimensions of the sheets to be purchased.

The drawing reflects the position of the niche on the wall, all dimensions are applied. It would be useful to make an additional plan, indicating the equipment to be installed, taking into account its dimensions. Compartments should be larger than the equipment being inserted to provide adequate ventilation and wiring. Before rear wall distance not less than 10 cm.

If the shelf is intended to be divided into zones, you need to draw the layout of the room and indicate its location relative to the rest of the furniture, walls and corners. According to measurements, the required amount of material is calculated.

Material selection

At each stage of creating a niche, certain resources and tools will be required. To apply the markup, you need to prepare a ruler, marker or pencil, tape measure, building level. The frame structure can be made of wood or metal profiles.

From a practical point of view, it is better not to use wood. Over time, it dries out, absorbs moisture, and temperature changes adversely affect it. Such a frame will lead, since drywall is a fragile material, a niche from it will not last long.

Strong and durable will be the design of the metal profile. It is better to use aluminum, it is lighter in weight, easier to process and cheaper in price. You need to purchase guides, bearing profiles, suspensions. For their fastening you will need a drill, self-tapping screws and dowels. For cutting, prepare scissors for metal.

Sheathing is done with moisture-resistant plasterboard sheets. The thickness depends on the purpose of the shelves and the future load. If heavy objects are not placed on them, then it is enough to take an arched plasterboard. It is thinner than the ceiling and wall, and, accordingly, its cost is lower.

To work with drywall, you will need special glue, a sharp knife (you can use a clerical knife), a spatula, sickle, starting and finishing putties, a roller, and paint.

Installation of a drywall niche - step by step instructions

Work begins with surface preparation. Careful alignment is not required for it, everything will be closed by the structure. Roughness should be assessed for the reliability of fastening. A profile is applied to the wall and see how tightly it fits to it. If necessary, you will have to perform at least a slight alignment in order to avoid warping the frame.

The work depends on the size and shape of the defects. Bulges are easy to bring down with a hammer and chisel, cover the place with a solution. Sometimes it is more convenient to align profiles during installation by installing wedges, linings and other devices.

Next, you need to conduct wiring, if you plan to bring the electrical network. The main part of the cables is passed under the baseboards, the rest is masked under the box. All of them are closed in corrugated hoses, which are fixed to the base with the help of special clips.

The next step is marking. A drawing with real dimensions is transferred to the prepared wall surface. The marking grid is applied using a building level and suspension so that the structure is even horizontally and vertically. A niche is mounted along the drawn lines.

Metal profile assembly

There are two frame options:

  • if the future structure is small, then it is easier to assemble the structure first and then fix it on the wall;
  • with impressive dimensions, installation is carried out directly on the wall.

Manufacturing process frame structure with your own hands, you can imagine the following step-by-step instructions:

  1. 1. First of all, guides are fixed, they form the basis of the future design. The correct installation is controlled using the building level.
  2. 2. Focusing on the markup, a carrier profile is attached to the wall, forming back frame. Check the corners to make sure they are straight.
  3. 3. Next, GKL strips are cut out and attached to the assembled frame. They limit the inner plane of the niche.
  4. 4. The next step is to install vertical racks and horizontal guides. Work begins from the center of the structure, moving to the edges. Vertical strapping is performed after fixing the horizontal strips, this makes the frame stronger and more reliable.
  5. 5. Fix the guides on the floor and, if necessary, on the ceiling.
  6. 6. At the next stage, the outer frame is assembled, similarly to the inner one, by attaching rack profiles.
  7. 7. Horizontal jumpers are installed between the rear and front crates, reinforcing the structure. The appearance of the niche, the depth of the shelves and the ability to withstand the weight of the installed equipment depend on the correctness of their fastening.
  8. 8. Having finished the fastening work, check the structure for separation. If it is securely fixed, proceed to the stage of finishing with plasterboard sheets.

To create a frame for shelves, a frame is first made from profiles the right sizes. Then it is attached to the wall. If the shelves are too long, jumpers are used for fastening, which are installed in 40 cm increments. Having attached the frame to the floor and ceiling, wardrobes are installed. For curved structures, a flexible profile is taken or cuts are made on the sides of the usual one. Some planks are equipped with special locks, which makes it easier to assemble the frame.

GKL sheathing technology

Before starting work, you need to pre-cut the parts according to the dimensions in the drawing. During cutting, you should protect yourself from harmful dust from drywall by wearing goggles and a mask.

The sheets are easy to cut. To do this, first cut the cardboard with a construction knife to the gypsum layer, then bend the canvas and make a cut on the other side. You can use an electric jigsaw. Technological holes are cut out on the blanks for wiring, mounting sockets and switches.

When the parts are cut out, each must be attached to the installation site in order to fit, if necessary. Next, large strips of drywall are screwed with screws to the frame in increments of 25 cm, making sure that the caps are deep and do not stick out above the surface. Too much immersion in the sheet is not worth it, as it may burst. Sheathing a niche, the distance between the fasteners is 15 cm. 2 cm recede from the edge. The edge must be on the profile, otherwise it can be damaged.

Sometimes strict geometric shapes do not always fit harmoniously into the interior. It is necessary to create niches in the form of arches, semi-ovals, ovals and other curly configurations. The top of the drywall construction is curved, the bottom is left flat to perform functional loads.

Used to make molds design drywall 6-6.5 cm thick. Inside it is reinforced metal mesh, which allows the material to be bent with a small radius. If it is necessary to bend the usual GKL, the sheets are cut, and after fixing they are puttied. Another option is to bend them in a semicircle with moisture. To do this, first, the parts are passed over the surface with a spiked roller, then sprayed with water and left to dry in a special form. After 12 hours, the GCR will take the desired configuration.

Beauty guidance - putty, seam sealing and finishing

First, putty places for attaching sheets. The surface is leveled so that it is not visible where the screws are screwed. Since the cutting was done manually, the edges are uneven, so the borders of the joints are cut at an angle of 25 degrees, making a chamfer.

If cuts are not made at the joints of the sheets, after applying the putty, a bump is formed, which is subsequently difficult to level.

The seams resulting from the joining of the sheets are filled with putty mortar and leveled. Then a serpentine tape is glued to the glue or putty, it is pressed well, the surface becomes perfectly flat. The corners in the niche are processed with a planer, making a chamfer of 45 degrees. After that, they are polished with a rasp. In conclusion, the entire surface is rubbed with an abrasive mesh and a finishing putty is applied. When it dries, carry out the last polishing.

Niche design options

After puttying, a primer layer is applied to increase adhesion and ensure a strong adhesion of the finish to drywall. To decorate and give a niche individuality, various materials are used: paint, wallpaper, mirrors, fabric.

Light colors should be selected, dark ones visually reduce the size of the room. Drywall construction make either the same shade as the wall, or a little darker. Inserted mirrors increase the space.

Exist different variants decoration:

  • Spot lighting. Lamps are mounted at the top or bottom.
  • Diode lighting. LED strips are used. If you combine them with an audio system, you get a kind of light music.
  • The back part is trimmed with photo wallpapers, decorative stone, cloth, dye.
