Renew the kitchen facade from MDF with your own hands. How to change the facades on a kitchen set with your own hands? Self-adhesive film: just the facts

Any, even the highest quality and reliable kitchen furniture wears out over time and loses its attractiveness.

And in order to reduce the cost of a new kitchen set, owners have to think about how to update the furniture in the kitchen with their own hands.

In fact, this task is not at all as difficult as it might seem at first glance. If you have really high-quality kitchen furniture installed, then you can extend its “life” almost indefinitely.

Yes, you can cope with modern furniture models that are not designed to last for a long time - the main thing is not to give up and show a creative approach.

Updating kitchen furniture

Approaches to updating a headset

Restoring a kitchen set is a fairly multifaceted task.

Approaches to its implementation depend on many parameters:

  • What condition is the furniture in?
  • What damage is there on it?
  • What do we want to get as a result?
  • What means, materials, and most importantly, what skills do we have?

Without answers to these questions, there is no point in starting repairs.

  • The easiest way to restore kitchen furniture is from natural wood. In general, the better quality the kitchen set was originally, the easier it is to restore it.
  • The more damaged the furniture is, the more money will have to be invested in restoring it. In some cases - especially if we're talking about about inexpensive sets based on MDF or chipboard - it is more rational to simply replace the furniture, since the cost of repairs will be close to the price of a new kitchen.
  • It's often easier to make drastic changes appearance kitchen furniture than to return it to its original state. Therefore, even if it seems to you that the kitchen cabinet or countertop is damaged irrevocably, do not despair - show your imagination and make yourself a perfect new kitchen.

Decor instead of renovation

Before you start repairing kitchen furniture that has lost its original beauty, we advise you to think - maybe the repair can wait for now?

Indeed, today there are several ways to decorate kitchen furniture without radical alteration, while simply hiding the damage caused.

Therefore, if your kitchen set has lost its presentable appearance not as a result of wear and tear from old age, but simply due to pinpoint damage (scratches, chips, stains, etc.), you can use methods to disguise defects.

  • The first method is to use vinyl stickers. Modern industry offers a fairly wide selection of stickers made from adhesive-based polyvinyl chloride that is resistant to any impact. Such a sticker is simply applied to the damaged area on the kitchen facade or the back of a chair - and serves not only as a disguise, but also as an interior decoration.

Advice! It is necessary to carefully select stickers in appearance and color scheme so that they look like a natural addition to the kitchen design.

  • The second method is decoupage (pasting furniture with decorative napkins). A special decoupage glue is applied to the damaged area, a thin napkin is placed on top of it, and on top - after the glue has dried - a layer of transparent acrylic varnish is applied. Decoupage is one of the most popular methods of decorating furniture, and allows you to create a unique, unlike anything else interior.

You can see examples of kitchen furniture updated using decoupage technology in the photo in this article.

Both of these methods will not only hide minor damage, but also save time and money spent on repairs.

Well, if the damage to the furniture is serious enough, well, you’ll have to start a full-fledged repair.

Kitchen furniture repair

Restoring kitchen furniture using self-adhesive film

The easiest way to update kitchen furniture is to cover it with self-adhesive vinyl film.

Most often, kitchen facades are updated in this way, but other pieces of furniture can also be covered with film - the main thing is that they do not experience serious operational load.

Advice! To update furniture, choose high-quality film, since cheap varieties of this material peel off from the base very quickly.

Below are instructions for updating kitchen facades using film:

  • We remove handles, decorative trims and other fittings from kitchen furniture that may interfere with gluing. We measure the surfaces that we will cover with film - the façade, sides, shelves, etc.
  • We cut out the film according to the dimensions obtained - to make the work easier, you can use the centimeter grid applied on the back surface of the roll as a guide. In places where the film is folded, leave an allowance of about 20 mm.
  • Before gluing the film, prepare the surfaces by thoroughly washing them with a damp sponge and a degreaser. The better we clean the surface, the more securely the decorative film will be applied.

  • Then we proceed to the actual pasting. Having peeled off a few centimeters of the protective film, we apply the decorative film to the surface and begin to smooth it, gradually removing the protective layer. For smoothing, you can use a special plastic squeegee, or you can simply use your palm - whatever is convenient for you.
  • If there is a small bubble under the film, you can try to “drive” it to the edge, or you can pierce it or carefully cut it.

Note! If the film is glued unevenly, it must be peeled off immediately (with a sharp movement), since after a few hours this will be much more difficult to do.

You can’t re-stick the peeled off film - it still won’t stick strong enough.

This method is one of the simplest and most accessible, since the price of the film used is low.

But the appearance of a kitchen updated in this way will not be the most attractive - that’s why other renovation methods are often used.

Painting kitchen facades

A more radical way is to paint facades and other elements of kitchen furniture.

This restoration method makes it possible to completely transform the kitchen - therefore it can be recommended not only when repairing furniture, but also when changing the style of the room as a whole.

Painting is quite simple:

  • We remove the facades from their hinges and dismantle the fittings. We disassemble the remaining pieces of furniture intended for painting to facilitate the painting work.
  • We thoroughly wipe all painted parts with a damp sponge, removing dust and dirt, and then degrease them.
  • Place the prepared parts on a work surface previously covered with plastic wrap.

Advice! All work related to painting and varnishing kitchen furniture should be carried out outdoors or in a well-ventilated area.

  • Using a spray gun, apply a layer of primer to the furniture. Leave the primer to dry completely - this will take about an hour and a half.

  • When the primer has dried, we begin to apply the paint of the shade we have chosen (the painting procedure is shown in detail in the video). For painting, you can use a fairly wide brush, but it will be much easier and faster if we use a spray gun. Apply the paint in several thin layers, after each application, allowing time to dry.

In this way, in just a few hours you can have a completely new kitchen - one that fits perfectly into your new design!

Experts believe that an apartment needs updating at least once every five years. You can do it more often, it doesn’t cost less. The kitchen is the heart of the apartment; here, according to , the vital energy of the house is concentrated. It is important that everything here is in order, shiny and sparkling. Then the welfare of the owners is guaranteed. Believe it or not, everyone decides for themselves, but the kitchen needs updating more often than any other room.

Making a plan

An action plan is needed. You must clearly understand what result you want to get and what is needed for this. The plan will help avoid unnecessary costs of money, time and labor on your part.

It can take anywhere from a few hours to a few days to create a plan for your kitchen renovation. The more detailed it is developed, the easier the process of creating a new interior will be. Take your time, approach this issue responsibly.

If you have come to the conclusion that the kitchen needs changes, then there is something that doesn’t suit you. It is important to understand exactly what it is. Take a piece of paper, a pencil, stand in the middle, look around and write down. For clarity, format the entry in a table, then conclusions and a shopping list will be generated automatically. An example of what the table might look like is shown below. Naturally, you can add your own graphs and modify them as you see fit.

It is important to provide for all the little details immediately at the planning stage, then the result will exceed expectations.

Renovate your kitchen no less responsibly than renovate it

Furniture

Furniture is the first thing that catches your eye. Dilapidated, shabby, incorrectly matched to the overall interior, with broken fittings, it makes a depressing impression. What to do? Buying new tables, chairs, cabinets is expensive. But updating your kitchen with your own hands is very easy, just read the article to the end and use your imagination.

Dinner table

We determine what material the table is made of: solid wood, chipboard, MDF, glass. Based on this, we choose the update method.

General recommendation: loose parts need to be strengthened. Disassemble the table, check the accessories for serviceability, replace where necessary. Pay special attention to sliding mechanism. All cracks where water can get in must be treated.

Solid wood

Solid wood is the easiest to work with. The material is not capricious, durable, and easy to restore. It is enough to remove the top damaged layer of wood and paint it as you see fit: paint in the desired color, varnish, and recently this type of arts and crafts, decoupage, has become popular. An interesting “tablecloth” effect is achieved by painting the surface through the tulle. For all painting methods, the algorithm of actions is the same.

  1. Lay newspapers or plastic wrap on the floor. Walls and other furniture should also be covered to prevent stains.
  2. Thoroughly wipe the entire surface of the table damp cloth, let dry.
  3. Remove the old layer of varnish or paint and sand it. It is best to carry out the procedure with a grinding machine, to which you can attach a bag for collecting debris.
  4. We cover the joints, uneven areas, and cracks with putty and let them dry.
  5. Varnish (paint) must be applied to the table in clean room, otherwise dust particles will stick, creating unevenness.
  6. After applying the first layer of varnish and its complete drying, the surface is sanded again with fine-grained sandpaper. This can be done manually.
  7. Next, apply as many layers of stain as necessary to achieve the desired shade of wood. With each layer, the table surface will become darker and the color more saturated.
It is not advisable to glue a self-adhesive film onto the surface of a table made of solid wood - the pattern created by nature is perfect.

Remember that furniture in the kitchen is more often than any other subject to mechanical stress and comes into contact with water.

Be sure to treat the countertop with a water-repellent wood compound. It is preferable to cover a table made of solid wood with a tablecloth or napkins during use. Any careless handling of cutlery can lead to damage to the surface, dents, and scratches. Water that gets onto a damaged table surface will cause the wood to swell and damage the appearance of the furniture.

Chipboard, MDF, glass Furniture made from laminated chipboard and MDF is much cheaper than furniture made from solid wood. Restoring is more difficult: the price of consumables

The countertop cannot be restored. Water entering the crack will inevitably cause the chips to swell, and unsightly bumps will appear on the surface. Cover the damaged area with silicone or rub it with a regular wax candle and let it dry. Such measures will prevent water from entering. The defect itself can be hidden with the help of a beautiful tablecloth, suitable for the overall interior, combined with textiles already present in the kitchen.

Tabletop defects can also be hidden by covering the surface with self-adhesive film, pulling artificial leather. It is not practical to cover with ceramic decorative (mosaic) tiles. Expensive. During daily use, crumbs and food debris will clog between the seams.

If there is a folding mechanism, check it for serviceability of the fittings. Replace and lubricate damaged parts with machine oil.

Old chipboard dining table modern look will give new metal legs purchased at a furniture fittings store.

Cannot be restored. It makes sense to remove the damaged, scratched tabletop and buy a new one made of glass or chipboard.

Kitchen cabinets

The first thing to do is update . The algorithm of actions is the same as in the case of the table. We figure out what material the cabinet doors are made of, and based on this, we develop an action plan.

The kitchen will become harmonious if all the furniture is decorated in the same style, similar. The table and chairs should complement the set. For example, when decorating a table using decoupage technique, take care of the same facades.

A simpler but more expensive option is complete replacement facades to new ones. Remove the facades from their hinges and measure them. Find out where the nearest furniture production is located, place an order of the required size, configuration and color. Choose handles that match your style.

Self-adhesive film will come to the rescue if you are racking your brains about how to make your kitchen better, and you don’t want to run out of money.

The appearance of the furniture is important. However, the internal component is no less important when updating your kitchen yourself. The comfort of cooking depends on how well the cabinets are arranged, how well they are made, and how high-quality fittings are installed.

Inconvenient. Getting dishes or food from a far corner is a difficult task: pulling out everything that is blocking the desired item and then putting it back takes a lot of time and effort. Make life easier - re-equip the internal equipment of the cabinets, make them retractable. Buy high-quality guides with closers.

Closers will save you from popping noises and household injuries. The move will become smooth and silent. Cooking using such furniture is a pleasure.

Make a table, then the scope of work and the shopping list will become clearer.

Tabletop

The countertop plays a huge role in the appearance of the kitchen. If cracks, chips, scratches, or swelling appear, it must be replaced, otherwise the update will be incomplete. It is inconvenient to cook on a damaged countertop; food gets stuck in damaged areas, which leads to unsanitary conditions. Making a replacement is not as difficult as it seems at first glance.

  1. Measure old countertop.
  2. By calling furniture manufacturers in the city, you will choose where you can buy a tabletop at the cheapest price.
  3. The new work surface should ideally match the existing interior; think in advance what color it will be.
  4. Dismantle the old one, first turning off the gas and water supplies.
  5. If before the renovation the kitchen was ordinary Appliances, then now, taking advantage of the moment, purchase a built-in one.
  6. Cut out electric jigsaw holes for sink and hob.
  7. Treat the cuts with silicone. Under no circumstances should water get in here. Otherwise, in a year you will have to start replacing again.
  8. Install and secure the tabletop to the frames of the lower modules.
  9. Secure the metal strips at the ends.
  10. Install the equipment.

There is an article on the site with more detailed instructions How to install a countertop with your own hands.

Chairs

It is better to update the chairs and table at the same time. This way you won’t have to clean up twice after carrying out dirty work and select an exact match of the color shade.

  1. Sand the frame. You will need both coarse sandpaper to start work and fine sandpaper to make the surface smoother.
  2. We prime cracks and potholes and let the primer dry.
  3. We coat it with varnish for painting, after the paint itself has dried. Any colour.
  4. Artists and creative personalities can apply a drawing or ornament.

When removing an old layer of paint or varnish, be sure to wear a respirator and goggles. The particles are so small that they will get into your lungs and eyes!

We reupholster the worn, stained seat with new fabric.

  1. Remove the old fabric.
  2. We change the foam. Cut according to the existing template.
  3. We cut the fabric with a margin of 10 cm around the entire perimeter.
  4. We put foam rubber on the base, cover it with fabric on top, fold it under the bottom, stretch it, and fix it with a furniture stapler or special nails.
  5. We fix the seat onto the frame that has dried after painting.

If you don’t want to do paint and varnish work, you can tie the chair with twine. To do this, we tightly wrap the back and seat around the surface with twine, which we immediately fix with glue.

Walls

When telling how to update a kitchen, you can't help but talk about the walls. Most often their lower part gets dirty. This situation is especially familiar to families with small children and pets. Children's fingerprints, traces of the process of learning to use a spoon, scratches - all this greatly spoils the appearance. To improve the situation, it is not at all necessary to re-paste the wallpaper in the entire kitchen. It is enough to replace the damaged part.

  1. Move furniture away from the wall.
  2. Remove the baseboards.
  3. Using a level and ruler, draw a straight horizontal line with a pencil.
  4. Draw along the line with a sharp stationery knife, separating the clean and damaged part of the wall.
  5. Wet the rag warm water, treat the area to be replaced so that the old wallpaper comes off.
  6. Fill any uneven walls.
  7. Treat with primer.
  8. Paste new wallpaper that matches the color and pattern. It is not at all necessary that the old and new parts completely coincide. The interior will become more interesting, more original if they become a little different.

If the wall in the kitchen is painted, then the damaged part can simply be repainted.

Floor

Updating the kitchen floor depends on the coating that is currently present. If it is tile, laminate or parquet, it is enough to remove the damaged part and replace it with a new one. Linoleum or carpet covering you will have to either change it completely or wash it very well.

Linoleum should not be washed with abrasive detergents, rubbed with powders or soda. This will lead to loss of brightness and scratches. Light stains can be washed off with a warm soapy solution. Treat more stubborn, greasy stains with a solution of water and white spirit.

Textile

How to update the kitchen if the furniture is in order, the floor and walls are like new, but you still want something new? Change textiles! The kitchen will change without much effort on your part.

For each season you can create your own interior. For winter, choose pastel textiles blue tones, for summer - green, autumn - yellow-orange. Textiles will also help create the mood for the New Year, birthday, and the eighth of March.

Textiles play an important role in the kitchen, but for proper use you need to know the rules:

  1. Do not overdo it. The kitchen should not look like grandma's chest, filled to the brim with rags. Know your limits. Napkins under every cup, plate, on windowsills, radiators - this is unnecessary.
  2. There is only one leading color in the kitchen - this is, most often, the color of the facades of the kitchen furniture. Textiles should highlight the furniture favorably; the color should not match. You are taking .
  3. Curtains, chair seats, towels, potholders, tablecloths - should not be the same color and texture, otherwise you will get a tasteless, uninteresting kitchen.

It is also important to follow safety precautions.

  1. If the stove is located close to a window, do not hang long curtains. A gust of wind can throw curtains onto a working hob.
  2. Potholders and towels should not be stored near stoves or heating electrical appliances.

Purity

Cleanliness is the most important condition for a beautiful and cozy kitchen. How to update your kitchen? Perhaps it just needs to be washed thoroughly... Dirty furniture fronts, stained windows, an untidy stove, stained towels - all this creates a feeling of discomfort.

Three hours of thorough cleaning will replace a month of repairs. A small but clean kitchen with inexpensive furnishings will be no worse than a huge apartment with Italian furniture.

Clean up your closets, throw out unnecessary things, wash, wash and starch the tablecloth - you will notice that it has become easier and freer to breathe.

For a domestic person, a kitchen is not only a place where food is prepared. This is a room for family lunches and dinners, a place to meet friends and family. All this means only one thing - the kitchen should not only be convenient for the housewife, but also attractive in appearance. Every decor matters, and even more so the kitchen set. When cracks and stains appear on it, or when it no longer matches the style of the kitchen and the tastes of the owners, many people think about buying a new set. But is it always advisable to spend money on something if you can improve the existing one? If the set is still strong and outdated in size and layout, then you can transform it with your own hands. Let's look at the most popular and effective ways to update your kitchen set.

Self-adhesive film This method of restoring a kitchen set has become truly popular, and all thanks to its numerous:

benefits

The downside is the low durability of the film, only 3-4 years, but the low cost and ease of replacement smooth out this drawback. The procedure for gluing kitchen facades is quite simple. Main,

  • choose a film of a suitable color, taking into account your preferences for the new one. It is not necessary to take material with imitation wood - you can take a plain, light-colored film, and then you will be able to make a small kitchen larger and make your dreams come true;
  • It is best to remove the kitchen facades - this will make the work easier. The fittings must be dismantled in any case;
  • measure the parameters of each removed facade;
  • the film must be glued to a clean, dry surface, i.e. facades must be carefully . This can be done with a soap solution or using dishwashing detergent. After this, you need to remove the remaining detergents and wipe the facades dry;
  • If the facades are seriously damaged, you will have to spend some time on repairs. The peeling edges at the ends must be glued. The holes must be sanded, then filled, sanded again and primed. If there are large potholes, then it is better to glue a patch of plywood or veneer in their place;
  • In accordance with the measurements taken, the film must be cut. Experienced craftsmen It is recommended to add 4-5 cm of allowance in places where the film will bend. If there is a large design on the film, then when cutting it is necessary to control that it is positioned correctly. It is better to cut with a stationery knife - this way the edge will be as smooth and neat as possible;
  • Take the first piece of film, start removing the protective layer of paper and apply the film with the adhesive side to the facade. Controlling the evenness, gradually peel off the protective layer and stick the film;
  • You can roll the film with a rubber roller or a plastic scraper. This removes any remaining air. It is necessary to smooth out from the center to the edges. If there are any air bubbles left, you can pierce them with a needle and roll the surface again with a roller;
  • If suddenly you notice that somewhere the film is glued crookedly, then within 5-6 hours the situation can be corrected. The film can be re-glued, but not more than 1-2 times, since then the glue will simply lose its properties;
  • when all the facades are pasted over, you can screw them back on;
  • You can use old fittings, or you can replace them with new ones, which fit better into the updated style.

If the shelves are dirty to such an extent that no detergent can remove them, then they can also be covered with film. The operating principle is still the same. The film can be chosen close to original color shelves.

Replacement of facades

Many people think that facades covered with film look somehow too modest. This is all, of course, a matter of taste and personal preference, but it is difficult to radically change the kitchen using vinyl film, because glass inserts or panels will not be added to the doors. To make serious changes to the kitchen interior, it is better to act radically and completely replace the facades. Yes, it will be more expensive than with film, but still much cheaper than buying a new headset. This method is perfect if the furniture frame is still quite strong and durable.

It will be easiest for the owners modular furniture , which was purchased relatively recently. Then you can buy facades of the required size and replace them yourself. But you’re not so lucky often, so you usually have to make custom-made facades. It is not at all necessary to change wooden doors to wooden ones, and chipboard to chipboard. Uniqueness this method restoration lies precisely in the fact that the appearance of the set can be dramatically changed using completely different materials.

Most cheap option– facades made of chipboard or plastic. MDF and wood will cost more. You can choose fittings and decorations, for example, use glass inserts, but all this will be reflected in the price. Handy craftsmen, of course, can make all the facades themselves. If you have woodworking skills, then why not? But much more contact the grove faster and faster specialized company , which will produce facades for your set.

An example of the work of specialists from the Kitchen Repair company

Coloring

The method is quite simple, but requires careful surface preparation. The main advantage of the method is Possibility to paint the facade in any color. If you want to make your kitchen bolder, you can choose a bright shade, such as blue, green or orange. A win-win color is white, as well as many light shades, incl. beige, gray, cream, etc. Imagine in advance what the kitchen will look like and get creative.

At the same time as painting the facades, they can be slightly transformed using moldings, special strips that are glued to the surface and give it an interesting relief.

The sequence of actions is as follows:

  • remove the facades from the furniture, dismantle the fittings and glass. Those elements that are difficult to remove can be sealed with masking tape;
  • old varnish or using a sander. If PVC film was used as decoration, then it is better to use. The temperature will melt the film and make it easier to remove. It is better to work in a respirator so that fine particles façade and the pungent odor of PVC did not enter the respiratory tract;
  • if there is serious damage, they must be filled with putty and then sanded;
  • the surface is rubbed, then dust is removed and degreasing is carried out;
  • if you plan to use moldings, then they are attached at this stage. You can choose smooth or textured planks; there are products that imitate stucco. It is better to sand the planks in advance, then they are cut into pieces of the required sizes. Often moldings are attached along the contour of the doors, or they are formed into a pattern closer to the center. Usually a connection at an angle of 45 degrees is used. After you have made sure that the figure is laid out evenly, the elements are glued, you can use glue to wooden products. It is allowed to use nails without heads;
  • MDF, chipboard and wood absorb moisture well, so it is better to pre-coat them. The one designed for woodwork will do. It is better to apply two layers;
  • Now you can start painting. It is better to use auto enamel. The first is cheaper, the second is better in terms of moisture resistance and resistance to mechanical damage. Can be used. The paint is applied in 2-3 layers depending on the required color saturation. To guarantee, some craftsmen cover the facades with a layer of transparent varnish;
  • when the paint dries, remove it masking tape, the fittings are returned to their place, and the facades themselves are hung on hinges.

If coloring seems too banal to you, then use glisal, translucent glossy paint. It is applied in exactly the same way as acrylic paint, but while the coating dries, you can create an interesting texture on the surface. Using a sponge, bag or other available items, you can make a geometric design or an ornate pattern. If anything happens, part of the drawing can be removed with a roller. The result is an unusual result that will appeal to lovers of ethno-style.

Varnish coating

Option will do only for facades made of solid wood. Varnish allows you to reliably protect the wood and at the same time does not hide its chic natural look. When it comes to furniture, nitrocellulose, alkyd-urea, polyurethane, epoxy and polyester are used. It is important that the varnish protects the wood from moisture and elevated temperatures. The varnishes have a not very pleasant smell, so it is better to carry out all work outside. If this is not possible, then it is better to take the material water based, it has almost no smell.

It is very important to decide in advance with gloss level. The varnish can be glossy, which will add visual volume to the set, or it can be matte, which will emphasize the wood pattern. The degree of gloss is indicated on the packaging as a percentage of reflected light: glossy varnish will reflect up to 90% of light, matte - only 10%, there are many intermediate options. Which is better depends only on your preferences.

The operating procedure is as follows:

  • remove the facades, dismantle the fittings, if necessary, seal some parts with masking tape;
  • remove the old layer of varnish, you can use sandpaper. Dust is best removed with a vacuum cleaner. After finishing the work, wipe the surface with a damp cloth, then allow it to dry thoroughly;
  • apply primer varnish;
  • The varnish is applied using a brush or roller; it is better that each new layer is slightly thinner than the previous one;
  • Some types of varnish need to be worked only outdoors;
  • drying speed varies for different varnishes, the average is indicated on the packaging;
  • After drying, the tape is removed and the fittings are returned to their place.

To create aging effect, you can apply stain in several layers.

Updating hardware

We have all heard repeatedly about the enormous influence of little things, but many, however, refuse to believe the truth of this statement. Designers, without any doubt, convince us that sometimes changing handles to kitchen set can transform your kitchen space. More often, however, replacement of fittings is carried out along with updating or replacing facades.

It happens that the kitchen set itself is perfectly preserved, but the handles from constant interaction with them have become peeling, tarnished, or even deformed in places. Remove the old fittings and head to a specialized store, where they offer a lot of the most different pens. The main thing is that the size matches and you don’t have to drill new holes.

If the old handles fit perfectly into the style of the kitchen, then you can find new ones that are as similar to them as possible. If you want something fresh, or if the kitchen façade has become completely unrecognizable after some simple manipulations, then choose handles in a new style. The range of manufacturers includes handles in modern and classic styles, smooth chrome-plated and antique carved. There are handles with imitation leaves and animals, and some with inlaid glass and stones. There are wooden, plastic and metal, transparent and colored - everyone can choose the right one.

Maybe, the hinges and mechanisms of the sliding shelves need to be replaced. Before going to the store, these elements should be dismantled and taken with you as a sample. New loops are selected to match the size of the previous ones. It happens that the existing holes become very loose, and it is impossible to attach new hinges to them. Then they will have to be puttied with a composition for acrylic base match the color of the facade, sand it, varnish or paint it, and only then drill new holes and install purchased hinges. Old roller mechanisms can be replaced with ball ones. All these actions give a huge result - using the headset becomes more pleasant and comfortable.

Glass replacement

As a rule, it is enough to simply wash glass inserts in facades well to return them to their original ideal appearance. But what if you want something new? You can replace existing ones clear glass to matte or colored, then the kitchen will noticeably change. True, the glass will have to be made to order, and not everyone can handle the replacement itself.

More a budget option- buy . With its help, you can give the glass the desired shade without depriving them of transparency. It will help create a matte effect or imitate the most. Anyone who knows how to use a tape measure or measuring tape, scissors and is able to carefully apply the film can definitely cope with gluing the film.

There is also an old, ancient method that involves applying a mixture of chalk powder and silicate glue to the glass. This material is applied to the glass in two layers, after which they become matte.

Decoupage of kitchen facades

Decoupage is a great way to update your kitchen set and give it a touch of style. After the transformation, the facades will look as if talented artists painted them for you, but you will know that you made all this beauty with your own hands. You can put absolutely any design on cabinets and shelves, but usually they choose something related to plant and kitchen themes: images of fruits and vegetables, coffee, jars of spices and cereals, flowers, etc. Decoupage will help decorate facades with ornaments in the style of Gzhel or Petrikov painting. The main thing is to find a suitable drawing - no one limits your imagination.

Everyone can cope with the restoration of facades on their own:

  • remove all doors, remove fittings;
  • If the surface of the headset is perfectly flat and smooth, then you only need to wash it well to get rid of stains of grease and dirt. If there are defects, it is better to sand the surface. First use fine-grained sandpaper, and then coarse-grained sandpaper. If you have at your disposal Sander, then it will greatly simplify the process. If there are cracks, depressions, or pits, it is better to fill them with putty. When it dries, the treated areas are sanded again. After this, the facades can be primed, but many skip this stage;
  • The decoupage technique is suitable not only for wood, chipboard and MDF - it can also be used to decorate plastic and glass facades. Preparing them for decoration is very simple - just get rid of all the dirt and grease;
  • The easiest way is to use three-layer napkins for decoupage. Think in advance about which part of the façade the drawing will be located. Don't use images that are too small. Different cabinets can be decorated with pictures in the same style. The image can be glued to regular PVA glue;
  • now all that remains is to open the façade acrylic varnish, it is better to use 3-4 layers, each applied after the previous one has completely dried. The easiest way to work is with a narrow brush with long bristles;
  • All that remains is to return the fittings and install the facades.

If this is not your first work using the decoupage technique, then you can use not only special napkins. Experienced craftsmen know that fragments of wallpaper with a suitable pattern, and even maple for a kitchen table, will do, not to mention that the image you like can be printed on a printer.

Decoration with ceramic tiles

After renovation, almost everyone has leftover tiles. You don’t need a lot of material for this method, so even the purchase won’t break your budget. Naturally, not all facades are tiled. Fragment with beautiful design can be glued in the center. This can be one tile or four smaller tiles laid out in a square or diamond shape. You can lay out the contours of the cabinets with small tiles. Often such decoration is used to decorate the lower or upper edge of the set. The image on the tile must match general style kitchens.

The operating principle is as follows:

Decoration with rattan inserts

The principle is the same as with ceramic tiles. Rattan inserts will look appropriate with ethno- and eco-style. Rattan copes well with moisture, which is why it is well suited for the kitchen. It can be used to replace glass inserts along with large-scale restoration of facades. Rattan inserts can be glued on top of blind cabinets. The variety of weaves and the presence of several shades will allow you to choose suitable option inserts.

Working with rattan is easy:

Use of chintz

Fabric decor is rarely used, so this is your chance to make your kitchen unique. You will need a piece of fabric with a suitable pattern, and then everything is simple:

What else is used to update kitchen facades?

The imagination of home craftsmen knows no bounds, and people's ingenuity has generated a lot of interesting, non-trivial ideas on how else to refine an old kitchen facade. The following materials are used for this:

How to update your kitchen countertop?

Renewing the facades and leaving the countertops unattended means not finishing what you started. – the most vulnerable place of a kitchen set, because its surface is constantly exposed to drops of water and fat, mechanical stress, and high temperature. Chipboard countertops, as a rule, are the first to suffer, and while the façade looks even more or less normal, the work surface leaves much to be desired.

What can you do yourself to update? kitchen countertop? There are several options:

If the countertop is still in good condition, but there are only one or two noticeable flaws (for example, burn marks or places from a knife blow), you can carry out local repairs. The defective area is carefully processed with a milling cutter to end up with a quarry-type depression. It is filled with wood putty to match the color of the tabletop, the material is added in portions, compacted well, and the excess is removed with a knife. The treated area is sanded, polished and painted. If you can accurately replicate the color or pattern of the countertop, then the repair area will be invisible. When everything is really bad with the countertop, it’s better to have it done complete replacement by turning to professionals.

By combining the methods described above, you can transform your kitchen set with your own hands in such a way that all guests will think that you bought new furniture. If you combine this transformation with cosmetic renovations in the kitchen, the result will be absolutely impressive.

It may seem that pens are an insignificant element and are not even worth talking about. But designers have a completely different opinion on this matter. They argue that it is small details that play a rather large role in the overall image - they give the furniture a finished look and emphasize the style. If the kitchen set is generally well preserved and not cracked, but the handles have become dull and peeling, then the kitchen interior will look sloppy.

That is why urgently replace your old pens with new ones! Now you can find a huge variety of different options: these are modern staples of various colors, wooden, or transparent plastic.

Do you want to make your kitchen brighter? Buy colored pens; they will certainly add a fresh touch to the interior of the room. Experiment not only with the material, but also with the form. Now there is a huge selection of different handles for furniture facades, for example, in the shape of animals or plants, which your child will simply be delighted with.

Range door handles so diverse that it can satisfy the needs of any, even the most demanding buyer.

When going to the store to buy new fittings for kitchen cabinets, be sure to take an old handle as a sample, otherwise you may make a mistake with the size and end up having to make new holes in the doors, which is just a waste of time.

Decorative inserts

Another one interesting idea How to update a kitchen set with your own hands - sticker decorative inserts on the facade of cabinets (including doors). You can use a variety of materials for this - leftovers ceramic tiles, For example.

To do this you will need the following materials and tools:

  • ceramic tiles (you can take leftovers for this purpose and even buy scrap at a bargain price);
  • tile adhesive;
  • overhead strips.

No special skills required. You should not abandon this method for the reason that you have never had to lay tiles before. Believe me, everything is much simpler than it seems. First you need to unscrew the cabinet doors and remove the fittings. Wash them thoroughly and let dry. It wouldn’t hurt to treat particularly heavily soiled areas with some alcohol-containing solution. If you want to radically update the facades, then you should first paint them. Dissolve tile adhesive. Lubricate the surface of the facade. And start gluing the tiles according to the previously created sketch.

To add aesthetics to the facade, make a frame of decorative or plastic strips. Glue them also with glue, but choose a universal one, such that it can easily fit on both surfaces and does not leave marks.

By the way, the inserts can be made not only of ceramic, but also of rattan fabric - they are most suitable for kitchens whose interior is designed for eco-style or some type of country style.

That's all - finishing of the facades of the kitchen unit is complete. The home craftsman just has to install them in their places and screw the unscrewed fittings.

Let there be color!

Instantly transform the interior kitchen space colored boxes. Nowadays, colored inclusions, disproportionately located on the surface, are very fashionable. If the kitchen is made of wood, simply paint a few drawers in different colors. For example, if a kitchen needs updating white, then paint the boxes green or blue. Don't be afraid to create, there are no restrictions, it can be red or yellow, to your taste.

Although white is considered the color of purity and neatness, in general it is quite boring and monotonous. And it is bright splashes of color that can make furniture colorful and cheerful. If the kitchen is made of plastic, then the drawers can be covered with colored self-adhesive film, which is sold both at construction markets and in stores. Remove boredom and despondency from the family hearth!

Wooden decor

Wooden stickers on kitchen doors look original. You can buy them ready-made - kits for children's creativity are also suitable for this purpose. Do you know how to saw? Amazing! Then do wooden blanks with your own hands! Cover them with varnish and glue them to the doors.

What shape the sticker will be is up to you to decide - small flowers or stars, geometric shapes or fences glued across or along the door panels. If you have a child, invite him to participate in this interesting matter, he will be with great pleasure decorating kitchen furniture under your guidance.

Calico accent

Calico facades look nontrivial. In order to decorate a kitchen like this, you will need a piece of chintz, which you can buy in a store or find in your closet, measure the doors of the kitchen furniture, cut the fabric according to the measurements obtained and stick it on the panel (be sure to remove the handles before doing this!).

After drying, paint the chintz with colorless varnish - this should be done five to seven times. Along the perimeter of the glued fabric, you can attach wooden slats, which will complement the innovation and make the decoration more neat. And if you manage to make a lampshade from the same fabric and sew chair covers, then you will get an unusually beautiful kitchen.

Decoupage

Decoupage is one of the most spectacular and cheap ways to update your kitchen set. The works of the masters turn out to be so interesting that even after looking high quality photos, it’s still breathtaking and I want to try with my own hands to transform the furniture in the kitchen that has become incredibly annoying beyond recognition.

To make such beauty, you don’t need anything expensive. All you need is an artistic flair, an understanding of how the transformed furniture will look after the decoupage work is completed.

What you will need:

  • dye;
  • large drawings of kitchen themes (for example, fruits, beautiful jars with spices or cereals);
  • acrylic lacquer;
  • primer;
  • craquelure varnish (provided that you want to achieve an aging effect - as a result, the furniture will be covered with artistic cracks);
  • PVA glue (or special decoupage glue);
  • sandpaper;
  • set of brushes.

Again, we can't do without dismantling the kitchen. Unscrew the panels and remove the fittings. Thoroughly wash the surface you will decoupage. If necessary, sand and remove uneven surfaces.

Carefully inspect the surface; if there are large cracks on it that spoil the appearance, you will first have to putty them. After this, go over the panel with sandpaper.

In order for the surface to look smooth and the applied decor to look natural later, it is better not to be lazy and prime it.

If you plan to do decoupage on glass inserts, then you must degrease the glass. Special detergents will help you cope with this.

Prepare the design you want to place on the furniture. Consider the surface area, the size of the pattern will depend on it. Don't glue too small images. But, of course, everything depends on the idea being implemented. It is better to use special three-layer napkins for decoupage. It’s up to you to decide which drawing to choose, but keep in mind that they should be good quality and approach general interior kitchens. If the main decor of the room is made in Provence style, then pictures depicting lavender, olives, and climbing roses are suitable.

By the way, you can print pictures for decoupage yourself if you have a laser printer.

You can go another way - decorate your kitchen cabinets with pieces of wallpaper with a suitable pattern. Perhaps this is the easiest decor option.

If you decide to decorate old set using wallpaper, then in this case standard decoupage glue or PVA will not work. In this case, the glue is selected depending on the type of wallpaper.

The finishing touch is to completely cover the entire part with acrylic varnish. This must be done 5-6 times.

It is necessary that each previous layer of varnish dry thoroughly.

We assemble the kitchen set and admire the transformation. Don’t forget to take a photo and post it on social networks - this way you’ll be able to wait for your friends to visit you faster; they’ll probably want to learn the secrets of updating kitchen furniture with their own hands and see how the set looks in real life.

Fabric imitation on old kitchen furniture

There is another way to update your kitchen set - imitation fabric. If you don't want to bother with real material, use this method. First you need to remove the doors from their hinges. Paint the façade with white paint and let dry completely. Next, apply a thin layer of paint of any other color of your choice, but make sure that the white color does not show through the new layer. If you wish, you can leave a white border around the edges. Now start creating. Take a spatula with large teeth and draw straight lines from top to bottom. The result will be smooth paths. Step away a short distance and look at the door - it seems that it is covered with striped fabric. If you also draw horizontal lines, it will feel like the fabric is checkered. There is one important circumstance - be sure to make sure that your hand does not tremble and that the lines are straight. You also can’t take your hand off when drawing lines, otherwise the paths will look sloppy.

One of the simplest and inexpensive ways update the kitchen set - cover the facades and internal shelves with self-adhesive film. The range of this material in stores is impressive - you can easily choose a vinyl film with the desired pattern. The image on the film imitates different surfaces: a natural stone, leather, wood texture.

Self-adhesive film is ideal for restoring old kitchen furniture:

  1. Tolerates high humidity well;
  2. Resistant to sudden temperature changes;
  3. Cleans well;
  4. If necessary, it is easy to replace the damaged fragment.

Materials and tools:

  • vinyl self-adhesive film with the desired pattern;
  • accessories;
  • roulette;
  • marker knife/scissors;
  • rubber roller;
  • sponge.

Before starting restoration work to improve the appearance of kitchen furniture, it is necessary to completely empty it of its contents, remove shelves and drawers, remove facades from hinges, and remove fittings.

Place the unscrewed facades on a hard horizontal surface. Now take the dimensions - the height and width of the drawers and facades that you are going to cover with self-adhesive film. Write down this information.

Unscrew handles, corners and other fittings, if any, on the facades.

Now arm yourself with sponges and detergents - thoroughly wash the surface on which you plan to stick the self-adhesive. Make sure there is no residue left on panels or shelves. greasy stains. Don't forget to wipe the set dry with a clean, soft cloth that does not leave lint.

Self-adhesive film is easy to work with; even a novice furniture restorer can handle it without any problems. Please note that there is a paper centimeter grid on the back of the film. It will help you cut out the parts to the desired size.

Don't forget to add 4-5 cm to the pattern in those places where the film will bend. This margin is necessary for the film to stretch well. When you start cutting the film, control the location of the pattern, if there is one.

Using a marker knife, cut out the required number of parts according to predetermined dimensions (including allowance for hems).

Start decorating the set. Apply the film to the surface of the facade, carefully peel off the protective paper base on which the centimeter layout is made. After the film has stuck evenly, go over it with a rubber roller. Make sure that the self-adhesive film lies flat and there are no air bubbles underneath it.

In this simple way, cover all the facades, shelves, and drawers. Replace the fittings if necessary. Screw the fronts into place.

Now admire your work! The set has been transformed and will last for several more years or until you want to radically replace all the furniture in the kitchen. In the meantime, get ready to listen to compliments from friends who dropped by for a quick visit that they were able to so cheaply transform their old set beyond recognition.

Replacement of facades

There is also a radical way to update a kitchen set - completely replacing the doors. But let’s say right away that this method cannot be classified as economical. Having taken measurements of the old doors, you can order new ones, at your discretion, both in color and material.

You can varnish or paint new doors. And don’t be upset that except for the doors, everything remains old; believe me, no one will notice this. And if the foundation of the kitchen is in good condition, then it will be able to please you for many more years. There is one more important detail - you did not overpay for the update, because almost all wooden kitchens are basically made of chipboard, and they only have front panels made of wood. Think for yourself why you need new expenses when the “skeleton” of the furniture is already good. If the shelves have become so dirty over the years that they are almost impossible to clean, cover the surface with self-adhesive wood-look film - inexpensive and beautiful!

Glass replacement

If your kitchen cabinets have glass doors and shelves, replace them with new, more modern ones. Nowadays frosted and colored glass is at the peak of popularity. An updated facade of kitchen furniture, as well as new shelves - and you can consider that you now have fashionable furniture in your kitchen.

It is best to order glass in a store, but if you do not have the funds, you can use the method that our grandfathers invented - a mixture of powdered chalk with silicate glue Apply with a brush to the glass in two layers.

You can put beautiful bright dishes on the shelves, which will give the kitchen a “cheerful mood,” and you can add lighting under the shelves. The result will be a kitchen set that will not be inferior to expensive Italian furniture.

Moidodyr

If our tips and examples with photos have not convinced you to update your old kitchen set, then at least try to simply wash it thoroughly. Over many years, a huge amount of soot and grease eats into the surface of the furniture, and with proper cleaning it can even change color. Furniture that is finished with plastic and covered with enamel can be easily cleaned with ordinary washing powder at the rate of one tablespoon per liter of water. It is not worth washing the surface of enameled furniture with water above fifty degrees using soda or laundry soap. The listed means lead to tarnishing of the enamel. It is enough to wipe the wood with a well-wrung out cloth, and then wipe the surface of the furniture dry with a linen napkin.

If there are many small cracks and scratches on the surface of the furniture, purchase special remedy, which masks them. If there is a stain on the lid of your table from a hot pan that was once placed, you can easily wipe it off with a mixture of alcohol and vegetable oil.

Metal parts of the kitchen that have darkened or tarnished over time can be updated with a self-prepared product - ammonia (30 g), chalk or tooth powder (15 g) and water (50 g). This entire mixture must be shaken thoroughly, and then applied with a flannel napkin to the darkened surface and rubbed until shiny. After this treatment, furniture handles will be better than new ones.

In a word, choose the method that you like and go ahead! Believe me, everything you do for the sake of your favorite kitchen will be appreciated and will delight you with its new look for a long time. We will be glad to see in the photo how the furniture has been transformed, thanks to our advice and your skillful hands.

It's time to freshen up the situation in the kitchen, but buying new kitchen furniture is not yet on the cards family budget? How to update your kitchen set at minimal cost? In such cases, professional designers and decorators advise replacing the old countertops and facades with new ones, repainting the “familiar” facades in a different color or covering them with self-adhesive film, and also updating the fittings. The most interesting thing is that an easy facelift of old kitchen furniture can be done with your own hands using simple improvised means.

The easiest way to transform old kitchen furniture is to cover it with self-adhesive film. Cheap and cheerful! By choosing a high-quality film with imitation wood, marble, tile, genuine leather or stone, you can give your kitchen, if not exclusive, then a very decent appearance. The waterproofness of vinyl film, its resistance to high temperatures and mechanical influences will preserve the pristine beauty of your design impulse for a long time. If you know how to handle a centimeter and scissors, you should not have any particular difficulties with film facelift. The main thing you need is accuracy and patience.

Necessary materials:

  • adhesive tape
  • centimeter
  • ruler
  • sharp scissors
  • stationery knife
  • plastic smoothing scraper

The easiest way to transform old kitchen furniture is to cover it with self-adhesive film.

Step-by-step instruction:

Step 1: We take measurements of the kitchen cabinets: facades, sides, drawers. For better quality and comfortable work It is advisable to remove the facades and lay them on flat surface.

Step 2: Remove the handles and other fittings. Use a damp sponge to thoroughly wash all cabinets and drawers, Special attention focusing on removing grease stains. There should be no traces of grease, dust or other contaminants on the surfaces to be glued. It should be perfectly flat, clean, dry and smooth. Otherwise, during operation, the film will begin to bubble in problem areas and move away from the surface. After wet cleaning, be sure to wipe all cabinets dry.

Step 3: On a protective paper layer with reverse side The self-adhesive film is coated with a centimeter grid, which greatly facilitates cutting and cutting of the film. We mark the required dimensions of each part. If all measurements are taken accurately, it is still advisable to leave a margin of 1-2 cm. In places where there will be bends, add 2 cm. If you have chosen a film with a repeating pattern, trace along the front side so that the repeats of the pattern match.

Step 4: We cut using a stationery knife along the ruler. We cut out curved patterns with sharp scissors according to preliminary markings with a marker or pencil.

A kitchen set covered with self-adhesive film with an elegant pattern immediately acquires a refined and unusual look

Step 5: After peeling off a couple of centimeters of the protective paper, apply the adhesive side of the film to the facade. Using a plastic scraper, smooth out the glued area to remove air bubbles and other irregularities from under the film. We do not glue the film all at once, but gradually remove the protective paper by 5-10 centimeters and carefully smooth out each area covered with a scraper. Take your time! Any bumps and irregularities will be especially noticeable on a plain surface, but on a variegated pattern they are less noticeable. Smooth out the film from the center to the edges. Small air bubbles under the film can be pierced with a thin sewing needle, and large ones can be cut with a sharp knife and smoothed out the film.

If the film lays unevenly during gluing, do not panic! It's not the end of the world yet. The matter can be fixed! The self-adhesive film will only fully stick after a few hours, so you have enough time to remove the film from the failed area and re-stick it.

Step 6: We perform similar operations with all other facades of the kitchen unit, as well as shelves and drawers. For a complete transformation, as a final touch, we change the furniture fittings, in particular the handles, but new ones and return the facades to their places.

If you just need to add a couple bright accents, refresh the interior with new colors and nuances, just use the interior vinyl stickers. They can be applied to any furniture with smooth facades; they are made of durable material, so they tolerate wet cleaning well and do not require careful maintenance.

  • HVLP spray gun
  • gloss deck paint
  • drill
  • furniture fittings
  • screwdriver
  • marker

Step 1: Preparing the facades. Before removing the facades, we make the appropriate digital marks on each door and cabinet so that nothing is confused during installation and everything is returned to its place. We dismantle the facades, remove fittings and fasteners. Using a damp cloth, carefully remove all dirt. Wipe the facades dry with a dry cloth. Since we will be using paints and varnishes, it is advisable to carry out the work not indoors, but outdoors in a well-ventilated covered place, for example, under a canopy. We cover the working surface with film and lay the prepared facades on it.

Step 2: Install decorative molding. Using a miter saw, cut the decorative molding into pieces of the desired length. We file the outer edges at an angle of 45 degrees. We glue the finished planks to the facade, “planting” them with wood glue.

Step 2: Installing decorative molding is a simple but delicate operation.

Step 3: Using a marker, mark the locations for installing fittings and fasteners. We drill holes with a drill or hammer drill.

Step 4: Prime the surface. Fill the paint reservoir in the spray gun with primer. Apply the primer from a distance of 15-20 cm. Wait about an hour until it dries completely.

Step 4: Prime the surface before applying paint

Step 5: Painting. When the primer is completely dry, fill the spray gun with deck paint. We carry out painting in the same way as a primer at a distance of 15-20 cm. To create an original pattern or ornament on the surface, you can use special stencils. If, after the final coat of paint has dried, unevenness and other flaws are noticeable on the surface, apply another coat of paint for a flawless result.

Step 5: Painting is done in any convenient way - with a brush, roller or spray

Step 6: Installation of facades. Not a trace remains of the old facades! Go ahead and guess what to attach where. It's good that we took care of this in advance. Step 2: Place the roll of rattan fabric in the bath and thoroughly moisten it with cool water. Leave for about half an hour so that the material is well saturated with moisture. IN wet rattan increases slightly in size. After installation and complete drying, the canvas is stretched like a string.

Step 3: While the rattan “reaches the desired condition,” we prepare the wooden planks that we will need in order to press and attach the rattan fabric to the facades along the perimeter. The color of the frame should be in harmony with the interior of the kitchen and the new finish of the set.
