We nail simple curtains to the wooden balcony windows. How to sew curtains for a balcony with your own hands? (6 photos). Rules for perfect curtains

You always want to make every corner of your home cozy. The kitchen, bedroom, bathroom, hallway are places where family members visit regularly. But the balcony often remains outside the comfort zone, turning, if not into a storage room, then into a smoking area. But if you remove it, repair it, make curtains for the balcony with your own hands, then this corner of the house will become cozy and comfortable.

Hide from prying eyes

Why do people hang curtains on windows and balcony openings? This tradition has been carried on since ancient times as protection against the evil eye. And today, the view of the street also needs to be limited - from the bright morning sun and its hot rays, from unnecessary glances from strangers from the street. And if the opening to the street is decorated with curtains, then it looks much more comfortable. It’s not at all difficult to make curtains for the balcony with your own hands, then they will not only become a decoration, but also a highlight of the interior.

What curtains should I hang on the balcony?

People have always strived to make their home beautiful and cozy. Sewing curtains for the balcony with your own hands will allow you to get the desired result. Balcony windows can be decorated in different ways, following traditions or fashion trends, using multi-layer protection or just a slight hint of it - this is all decided by the family in accordance with the needs and their views on comfort.

What's new?

Fashion trends offer many options for decorating your home. You can make curtains for the balcony with your own hands in accordance with the latest innovations. Thus, for several years now, so-called Roman blinds have been in demand as protection for windows. They are a fabric that, with the help of cords, rises up in measured folds or with a free drapery. Another unusual option- roller blinds. They are retracted, revealing the view from the window, curled into rolls, which is where their name comes from. Sun curtains can be made not only of fabric, but also of paper. Such protection can even be made from regular wallpaper, which makes it surprising and interesting. So, DIY balcony curtains, the ideas for which can be very different, are a universal opportunity to decorate your home.

Basis - traditions

Traditional curtains on balcony windows no one canceled. On the contrary, they are one of the most popular decor options. If there is no need to protect the balcony from bright sunlight, and curtains are used only as a way to hide the balcony from views from the street and give it comfort, then light tulle, organza or veil will come in handy. In order to make traditional curtains for the balcony with your own hands, you will need:

  • cornice (regular or string cornice);
  • textile;
  • curtain tape;
  • matching threads.

You can calculate the fabric like this: use the width of the balcony opening where the curtain should be hung, plus 10-15 centimeters for each meter. This is necessary to give the curtain a waviness. Make very large folds on light curtain no need, they will look ridiculous, and besides, they will sag. The height of the curtain is taken according to the height of the opening, plus 10 centimeters for the hem. Light synthetic fabric can not be tucked, but processed using an overlocker, and curtain tape can be sewn on. An even simpler way is to burn the thin edge on a fire from a candle or lighter, but you need to do this very carefully, without bringing the fire close to the canvas. Using curtain tape with special loops and tightening threads is very convenient; it allows you not only to hang the curtain, but also to drape it.

Practical Roman blinds

The balcony should be made cozy so that it harmonizes with the room from which there is access to it. In addition, an additional comfortable corner in the house will not hurt. Do-it-yourself Roman blinds for the balcony will help create the necessary atmosphere. To make them, you will need a little care, accuracy and strict adherence to all recommendations. A master class that will help you sew curtains for a balcony with your own hands is small, but detailed enough to get the desired result.

  1. It is necessary to measure all balcony window sashes.
  2. Purchase two types of fabric according to size, not forgetting about the increase for finishing the edges, which is 2 centimeters each.
  3. Calculate folds. There are usually 4-6 of them for a low opening; smaller folds look awkward, and wider ones look cumbersome.
  4. Rings are purchased based on the number of folds - it is more convenient to use 2, or better yet 3 rings per fold, depending on the width of the curtain.
  5. Wooden or plastic weight slats for folds (although a Roman blind can have a loose drape).
  6. A cornice mount where you need to screw in two or three special hinges.

Roman blinds are sewn as follows:

  • two panels, one of which is the front one, are folded inside out and stitched along the contour. The places where the weights will be inserted must be left unstitched;
  • trim the corners of the fabric close to the stitching so that there are no creases and the fabric lies flat;
  • Turn the curtain right side out and iron it;
  • insert all weights;
  • sew up the holes;
  • on the wrong side, mark and manually sew rings for the braid;
  • tie or firmly sew three pieces of cord on the lower rings, pass the cords through all the rings in height;
  • pass the cords through the rings on the cornice;
  • connect the cords into a single whole using a weighting agent - a large bead;
  • secure the curtain rod with the Roman blind in place.

DIY sail curtains

Another unusual way to sew roller blinds for a balcony with your own hands. This type of decoration window openings has very interesting story. originated on sea frigates, or rather, it is believed that the ancestors of such window protection were sails sea ships- they are also rolled into rolls and unraveled as needed. The principle of sewing them is almost the same as that of Roman blinds, but the method of operation of the curtain itself is somewhat different, because the roller blind is so named because it should curl into an unnoticeable roll when it is raised. The difference between two seemingly similar designs is that for a roller blind, only one tail of the cord is attached to the fabric, then it moves freely along the fabric, causing it to roll up. The design of the roller blind is clearly visible in the figure.

Crochet curtains

For those who know how to knit, make unusual curtains It won’t be difficult to build a balcony with your own hands. Thin threads, a suitable hook, time to work and a suitable pattern are all you need to create a cozy look. Curtains made with fillet patterns look very beautiful. Although any other openwork you like will look beautiful on the windows. The drawing could be, for example, like this.

You can also use separate curtains for each door, made according to the following pattern.

Country style

The most primitive, but cute curtains for the balcony, sewn with your own hands, are made in a rustic style. Light chintz or staple with a floral pattern, matched to the tone of the room, will add coziness to the space. Rustic style curtains are sewn very, very simply:

  • the width of the opening plus a few centimeters for light drapery - the width of the curtain fabric;
  • the height of the window and plus 5-7 centimeters for the hem - the height of the curtain.

The fabric is simply hemmed around the perimeter. Such a curtain can be decorated with flounce, sewing, embroidery. You can also make decorative tiebacks that are used when windows need to be opened.

Hide from the sun

Most often, during the day, the curtains are opened in order to protect the room from the sun's rays, which provide light and warmth. But when the sun is bright, curtains will help hide from it. You can make unusual curtains for the balcony from the sun with your own hands from the most ordinary paper wallpaper. However, it is best to choose a more durable wallpaper - vinyl, for example, or fiseline. You will also need:

  • stapler;
  • single-sided tape;
  • double sided tape;
  • wooden slats to the size of the sash;
  • metal ruler;
  • pencil;
  • non-writing pen or knitting needle;
  • scissors;
  • beautiful decorative cord to match the wallpaper.

Measure the wallpaper according to the size of the window sash, since these curtains are attached individually. From below, parallel to each other, mark the folds at a distance of 4-5 centimeters from one another. Using a non-writing pen or knitting needle, press the drawn lines through one first with front side, and then with the wrong side so that when folded they would look in different sides. On the wrong side, carefully glue a strip of narrow tape for strength. Fold the curtain like an accordion and use a hole punch to make a through hole exactly in the center. Without unfolding the canvas, fold the strip of rolled wallpaper in half so that later the canvas bends as necessary. Pass it through the central hole and secure it on the last fold with a piece of tape so that the cord does not slip out. Having measured the height of the cord on which the curtain will be located, secure it at the top in the same way as at the bottom. The curtain is glued to the cornice using double-sided tape. The only inconvenience of a paper curtain is that it is static and cannot be unraveled or raised. But it is very interesting and original. This curtain is easy to make and can be changed as needed. This decoration of the balcony gives it interesting style- a combination of Roman blinds with Japanese paper curtains.

Unusual moments

It turns out that the answer to the question of how to make curtains for a balcony with your own hands is not so complicated. And in addition to all the traditional curtains or designer novelties, you can also find interesting offers. For example, is it possible to see a city at night on a clear day? You can if you use a roller blind, sewing it from thick polyester. Yes, such material will not transmit sunlight. But if you make holes in it according to the markings using a hot knitting needle, then a night city with lights on in the windows will appear on a curtained window in broad daylight. Such an interesting find will decorate any balcony, any window, and will turn a white day into a dark night in a matter of seconds.

Another nuance could be interesting tiebacks for the most ordinary curtains. They are made from a variety of available materials. Craftsmen use computer disks, knitting needles, and toys. They make and arrange bouquets. Each of these crafts will allow you to decorate a primitive curtain, making the balcony a cozy and comfortable room at home. Original idea- sew bow curtains for the balcony with your own hands. The step-by-step instructions are as simple as possible:

  • the fabric is processed to the size of the sash;
  • the finished canvases are attached rigidly, but without tension, to the top and bottom of the frame;
  • in the middle they are intercepted with a clamp or tape.

You get huge bows. Such curtains are also called “hourglass”. Beautiful!

Curtains for the balcony, made with your own hands according to the most various technologies, will create unique interior this auxiliary room, which is often completely ignored.

Modern homeowners use a balcony (loggia) as an additional space, often turned into a corner. It undoubtedly requires appropriate decoration and, first of all, curtains on the windows.

Curtains muffle the bright light of the sun's rays and protect objects on the balcony from fading, but, most importantly, do not allow prying eyes to penetrate into the personal lives of the inhabitants of the home.

And it is not necessary to purchase ready-made curtains. It’s easy to make curtains for the balcony with your own hands and give the room a unique look. However, first you should determine which curtains are suitable for your balcony (loggia).

What you need to know about balcony curtains

A feature of a balcony (loggia) is its vulnerability to dust and moisture, especially if the homeowners keep the windows open to allow fresh air to enter.

To make curtains (blinds) for a balcony room, you need to know which side the windows are facing.

If you face the south and the sun's rays constantly peek into the room, you should choose thick fabric - it will not let the light through.

The north and east will require the use of light curtains, including organza and tulle. But in any case, you should abandon multi-layer curtains with lambrequins and ruffles - they instantly turn into dust collectors.

An excellent choice would be ecological fabrics made from bamboo, linen, and reed, which are appropriate in a laconic design.

Roman and roller curtains look great on a small balcony. A spacious, well-lit balcony will be decorated with Japanese curtains and elongated translucent curtains.

You cannot cover balcony windows with dark curtains: this color will “eat up” the space and light in the room. The emphasis should be on light tones - it is “friendly” with any color, creates a cozy microclimate in the room, absorbing excess sun and adding warmth to the balcony, which faces the cool side. It is worth choosing a curtain color that matches the interior.

Fits perfectly into the space horizontal blinds, roller blinds, Roman and Japanese curtains.

Their placement is suitable for balcony windows, since they are mounted directly on the window door. Classic curtains are not always possible to place on a balcony window due to the lack of free space between the top of the window and the ceiling surface.

Do-it-yourself curtains for the balcony - step-by-step instructions will help

Horizontal blinds are a proven method of decorating a balcony, which has long been known and has found its admirers. In addition, minor flaws in them are easily corrected. Their advantages:

  • wear resistance, since the profiles successfully resist temperature fluctuations and oversaturation of air with moisture, and enamel coating not subject to abrasion and scratches
  • variety of installation - on the wall, in window opening or on each leaf separately
  • excellent compatibility with tulle and airy curtains;
    the ability of the slats to rotate 360°, which helps regulate lighting

Flaws:

  • not suitable for sliding windows
  • to some extent prevent the doors from opening completely
  • make a ringing noise in drafts
  • The plastic fasteners located at the bottom break

Roman blinds on the balcony look like curtains made from a single piece of fabric. They are gathered into pompous identical folds of 20-30 cm. Such curtains are made in 2 types: with manual adjustment with twine (chain) and with electric control.

Advantages:

  • utilitarianism, manifested in resistance to possible dirt deposits, long service life and saving balcony space
  • ease of mounting not only on the window, but also in the alcove
  • harmonious combination with tulle
  • diverse, allowing you to fit into a different style interior, be it country or classic, eclectic or minimalism

No drawbacks have been noticed with Roman blinds, however, when choosing, you should prefer light shades of the fabric, abandoning the large patterned print on the fabric in the interior of small balconies and taking into account the “makeup” of the rooms next to them.

The second name for roller blinds is roller blinds, because when opened, the material is rolled up or covered in a box.

The panels are attached separately to each window door and, if desired, darken, which is something that conventional blinds lack.

Step-by-step instructions for making curtains for a balcony with your own hands will help you complete them without difficulty.

Roller blinds are made from fabric of various colors and textures. Such curtains have different prices and fasteners. The simplest and a budget option- Mini, which looks like a canvas with a fastening roller onto which the curtain is screwed. These curtains are easy to make with your own hands.

Advantages:

  • immunity to dust formation, precipitation and blinding sunlight
  • likelihood of installation on plastic or aluminum profiles window
  • variety of colors of materials
  • ease of use
  • significant cost spread
  • Easy to clean by dry cleaning or using wet wipes

Flaws:

  • reducing the opening angle of window doors
  • Some systems are not intended for sliding sashes

Japanese curtains or Japanese blinds embody Asian asceticism and simplicity. They look like several canvases attached to a special cornice and moving along horizontal guides.

Japanese curtains differ from the usual ones, vertical blinds the fact that their lamellas are stationary and made wider. In addition, the “Japanese” ones are made in strict accordance with the standard, where the length of the cornice does not exceed 6 m, the width of one lamella ranges from 0.2 - 1.5 m, and the number of panels in one line is 3 - 6.

Advantages:

  • have a variety of colors and combinations
  • protect from the penetration of dust and excessive light
  • are practical - a broken fabric panel can be easily replaced with a new one
  • easy to install - the cornice is secured with adhesive tape
  • suitable for various design decorations and are not only placed on the windows - located on doorway act as a partition if the balcony (loggia) is combined with a living space

Flaw Japanese curtains- they are “watchable” only in spacious balcony rooms. On a small loggia, the unusualness and elegance of such curtains is instantly lost.

Master class for those interested

With all the saturation of the modern textile market with various curtains (from rustic roller blinds to luxury blinds), choosing curtains is not so easy.

You don’t want to buy an inexpensive, nondescript option, but you can’t always afford a high-quality, stylish one.

Therefore, many owners of balcony windows strive to sew Roman or roller blinds for the loggia with their own hands.

The result is money saved and a unique curtain obtained.

The simplest roller blind can be made even by a person who is not experienced in the tailoring profession. It is more appropriate to place such curtains on a wall where there is some gap above the edge of the window.

To sew curtains for a balcony by hand, a master class for those interested requires stocking up the right amount meters of fabric (preferably compacted linen), 2 counterweights, links in the form of plastic rings, clasps and ribbons of sufficient width.

The fabric is cut based on the measured length and width of the balcony window. The fabrics in the upper and lower parts are stitched, turning these areas of the curtains into narrow pockets. Under the upper pocket, 2 plastic rings are attached to tapes, after which, after pulling through the counterweights, one of them is mounted on the wall.

2 hooks are fixed on the window frame, placing them on 2 sides of the panel. Pull 2 elongated twines through the hooks, lower them down, pass through the rings and pull 1 twine through the second ring. These twines will serve to lift and twist the curtain into a bundle.

As you can see, it is not difficult to make curtains and decorate balcony windows with unique curtains. This does not require a significant amount of time and money. How to make a Roman blind from scrap materials yourself is shown in the video:

Balcony curtains are a multifunctional accessory that is used as a decorative frame for window openings. They protect the interior space from bright sunlight and decorate the room, making it cozy and aesthetically attractive.

Features of choosing curtains

Unlike the bedroom, living room and other rooms, a balcony or loggia has its own specific features. They separate the street and the premises of the apartment and are more susceptible to moisture and dust due to the large glazing area. Therefore, curtains on the balcony should be easy to clean from dirt and maintain an attractive appearance for a long time. Other criteria for choosing window design options include:

  • lighting intensity;
  • dimensions;
  • style and concept of interior design.

Considering the combination of all factors, it is not difficult to find low-maintenance curtains for a loggia or balcony with an interesting design.

Light intensity

It depends on the location of the balcony or loggia relative to the cardinal directions and the density of development in the area adjacent to the house. If the windows face south, preference should be given dense tissues, which muffle the blinding rays of the sun.

You can purchase or sew curtains for the balcony from light and air materials, complementing them with blinds or opaque roller blinds. To decorate loggia windows on the north side or in conditions of dense spot development with high-rise buildings, it is advisable to use light-colored fabrics.

dimensions

On a small balcony, multi-layer curtains with a complex cut line and many additional details will look pretentious and heavy. In this case, it is better to give preference simple models, without lambrequins and volumetric elements. When selecting curtains for a loggia of 6 meters or more, you can not limit yourself to laconic forms, but you should not overload the window decor with unnecessary details.

Interior style and colors

The design concept for a balcony or loggia is usually selected in accordance with the purpose of the room. If it is planned to arrange a study or home library there, then the interior is decorated in classic style, and blinds are used to frame the windows. If you wish and have special skills, you can sew curtains for the balcony with your own hands, choosing the material and finishing.

A place to relax on a loggia is often decorated in Mediterranean style and complement the decor with translucent curtains, plain or with thin stripes. The color of the curtains can match or contrast with the interior palette.

Mounting options on the balcony

No less important than color and decor is the method of fixing the curtains on the balcony, which should not interfere with the opening of the window. Depending on the type and design features curtains, the following options for their fastening are distinguished:

  • on the ceiling or window frame using self-tapping screws, special tape or brackets;
  • on the double-glazed window with a special adhesive tape;
  • on a string that is pulled between opposite walls.

The traditional method includes hanging curtains on a loggia or balcony using a cornice, which not only performs utilitarian functions, but also complements the window design. It is made of plastic, wood or metal, choosing a harmonious combination with the curtains and the overall design concept of the room. For loggias in the Provence style, a forged cornice with decor in the form of leaves, curls and other details is suitable. Curtains on a small balcony with minimal finishing are fixed using simple designs.

To fix the curtains to the cornice use:

  • ties made of ribbons, braid or cord;
  • loops made of wide strips of fabric, which can be fastened or blind;
  • eyelets;
  • braid sewn along the upper edge of the fabric;
  • backstage

The type of curtain fastening is selected taking into account the characteristics of their cut and the characteristics of the materials used for sewing.

When choosing a cornice, you should give preference to structures that are securely fixed and safe to use. The method of fastening the curtains should allow them to be moved to the side and removed for washing without much effort.

Types of curtains and nuances of their use

In addition to traditional ideas for decorating window openings with fabric secured with a cornice, other options for curtains for a loggia or balcony are also popular.

Rolled

Roller blinds are made of fabric that, when opened, is rolled into a roll or placed in a box made of plastic or aluminum. The lifting of the canvas is carried out using a special mechanism, which is controlled manually or automatically. Depending on the size, roller blinds are fixed to the sash or window opening. The fabric for their manufacture can be transparent or opaque, plain, with a pattern or photo printing.

We invite you to watch a video about roller blinds

Due to the large glazing area on the balcony, curtains are more often exposed to moisture and dust. Roller curtain fabrics are impregnated with special compounds, and they are easily cleaned with napkins. The main disadvantage of curtains of this type is the reduction in the opening angle of the window sashes.

Roman

Fans of spectacular draperies should opt for Roman blinds, which, when lifted, form beautiful folds thanks to sewn-in rigid ribs. They can be either manually controlled or opened electrically. The advantages of curtains of this type include:

  • compactness;
  • ease of operation and maintenance;
  • Possibility of mounting on bay windows.

When choosing Roman blinds for a balcony or loggia, you should take into account their size and material finish. In small rooms, it is advisable to avoid fabrics with large or too variegated patterns, and for shaded rooms the best option There will be canvases in pastel shades.

Japanese

Japanese curtains consist of several vertical panels of fabric, which are fixed to a specially designed cornice and, when moved, move along horizontal guides. They are easy to install and versatile decorative solutions. To make Japanese curtains, use thick, impermeable or transparent fabrics different colors. They can be plain, colored with a transition of shades or with patterns.

Japanese curtains should not be used on small balconies. Such designs look impressive on spacious loggias.

Blinds

Another option is to decorate the windows of a balcony or loggia using lamella structures. Blinds can be horizontal or vertical, and are mounted on the wall, in openings or separately on the sashes. Thanks to the lamellas, it becomes possible to regulate the intensity of lighting on a balcony or loggia. Other advantages of blinds include:

  • wear resistance;
  • ease of operation and maintenance;
  • ability to withstand temperature changes and moisture.

To make lamellas, plastic, wood, bamboo or specially impregnated fabric are used. Depending on the material, blinds can be plain, geometric or floral. They harmoniously combine with light and transparent curtains made of tulle or muslin.

Window decoration wisdom

A huge selection of fabrics and accessories for window decoration may make you want to sew curtains for your balcony with your own hands. If models with a complex cut and various decorative details require skill and artistic taste, then simple curtains will require minimal skills. To do this you need:

  • decide on the type of curtains, taking into account the size of the balcony and other criteria;
  • calculate the required amount of material;
  • purchase fabric that will harmoniously match the interior of the room;
  • buy consumables.

We also invite you to watch a video about the loggia design.

The technology for cutting fabric and sewing curtains can be found in specialized literature or on the Internet.

If you have little experience in sewing loggia curtains, it is advisable to choose fabrics whose edges do not fray and do not require additional processing.

Regardless of what function the balcony performs (serves as a conservation warehouse, a work office, an addition to the living space, or temporary parking for prams), for the most part it consists of glass. And to make this room look complete, the balcony windows should be properly framed with textiles. We are, of course, talking about curtains.

The most important point modern design balconies are considered to be well-chosen curtains that harmoniously combine with common interior. Depending on the purpose of a given room, how many windows it has and how the adjacent room is generally decorated, various requirements are put forward for curtains, including those regarding color, texture and size. To make the room look more original, you can make curtains for the balcony yourself. Such work is not difficult at all - in fact, it only requires sewing machine, skills to work with it and scissors.

Before you start work, you should decide on the type of curtains and their design. An excellent option for a balcony are Roman blinds, which are straight pieces of fabric that are raised by folding. In this case, there are a lot of variations: you can make exquisite French triangles or give preference to beautiful lace, sew a one-piece structure, weighing it along the sashes, or use drapery. Be that as it may, the main advantage of any Roman blinds is convenience.

Note! These curtains will not flutter in the wind or interfere with opening the balcony windows. In addition, such a design solution allows for significant savings.

The fact is that Roman curtains require a small amount of material, so you can easily use expensive original textiles. As for massive curtain structures or curtains consisting of several layers, it is advisable to abandon them in the case of a balcony, because they will occupy a significant part of the already limited space. At the same time, it is also better not to use dense light-proof material, since the balcony, first of all, is necessary for the passage of air and light.

Finally, light curtains will look great in Japanese style made from bamboo or linen.

Option #1. We make Roman blinds

Let's start with the fact that they can be solid or consisting of several canvases at once. In the second case, each of the curtains must be attached to a separate cornice. If you are a beginner, then it is better to sew a one-piece version - this will help you understand the essence of the process and understand the principle of operation of the cornice and fasteners.

Note! Often the length of Roman blinds corresponds to the height of the ceiling, but you can make them shorter if you wish.

Stage one. We prepare everything you need

During the manufacturing process you will need:

  • fabric (as well as lining material if necessary);
  • hooks on a screw leg;
  • Velcro tape;
  • screws, small nails;
  • rods with a diameter of 0.4-0.5 cm (wooden or plastic), the length of which is 3 cm less than the expected width of the curtain (about 7-8 pieces);
  • a 2.5x5 cm block (the same length as the width of the curtain) for hanging;
  • small plastic rings (diameter - 1-1.2 cm) for each curtain; you will subsequently thread the cords into them;
  • weight bar;
  • 3 pieces of nylon cord (1 width + 2 curtain lengths).

After preparing everything you need, you can safely begin work.

Stage two. Manufacturing

Step 1. First measure the opening. To the resulting figures, add 6-7 cm for the seams on the sides and 12-15 cm for the allowances. As a rule, height allowances correspond to 20% of the curtain. Next, decate the fabric to avoid mistakes or shrinkage of the material when sewing: place it in water for a few minutes, then dry and iron.

If we talk about folds, their number/size depends, first of all, on the length of the window. To determine the required pitch between folds, you can use the table below.

We also note that another secret to making these curtains is the correct calculation of the “pockets-folds”.

Step 2. Mark on the back side future turns, folds and the location of the rings in accordance with the diagram above. In this case, it is necessary that there be the same step between the folds everywhere - then ready product It will drape beautifully.

Step 3. Double hem the side edges. Adjust the tension of the cord so that the stitching does not tighten the sides.

Step 4. Using a furniture stapler or small nails, secure the Velcro to the bottom of the block with the canvas attached to it. Process the top cut, then sew the remaining piece of Velcro there - this way, if necessary, you can easily remove the fabric to wash it.

Pre-treat the block that will serve as a cornice with paint of the required color. Although, instead of a block, you can take a lambrequin strip with Velcro (these are bought with brackets for the ceiling).

Step 5. Make a fold at the bottom of the rim and create a drawstring of such a width that you can insert a weight bar into the formed “pocket”. As an option, a flat profile (made of aluminum) can serve as a weighting material, the length of which would be 1-2 cm less than the cornice.

It is important that the color of the weighting material matches the color of the fabric. You can buy such a profile at any hardware store.

Step 6. Sew a border along the wrong side of the fabric, and insert pins into the pockets formed as a result. Seal the holes, but only sew the edges on one side - this will allow you to remove the pins and put them back before washing.

It is also important that the pins do not tear the fabric. Ideally, small plastic rods or corset inserts should be used (the latter can be found in any store specializing in sewing accessories). You need to insert such corset inserts as follows: first cut them into pieces of the required length, leaving a small margin, and heat them with an iron through the fabric, then put them under a press for several days to completely straighten them (the fact is that such inserts are sold in rolls by the metre). After this, you can insert them into the curtain pockets. Finally, another option would be to use metal wire, but provided that the rods are straight and made of stainless steel.

Step 7 Mark the location of the rings and sew them on by hand, following the diagram. Use nails to secure the rings to the block.

Note! The rings should be positioned symmetrically with respect to the middle of the curtain. In addition, the outer rings need to be attached approximately 7-10 cm from the edges.

Step 8 Attach the canvas to the block with Velcro. Fastening element secure the cord to the frame. Thread the cord through the rings, moving from bottom to top, and tie a knot at the bottom. You can additionally use glue to increase strength.

Step 9 When threading the cord through the remaining rings, perform the steps described above with each new row. As a result, the cords should come out on one side through the upper rings. Pull all the cords tightly, then distribute the folds along the curtain. Using ribbons, secure the folds in this position.

The process of making curtains. Pull the ropes through the holes on the cross bars. When this stage is completed, stretch the ropes through the holes in the cornice and secure it

Step 10 Place the block on the window frame or above it, remove the ribbons - the frame should then lower. Adjust the tension of the cords and, gathering them into a bundle, tie them into a knot behind the last ring. Next, thread them through the lifting handle and tie another one half a meter from the knot. Carefully trim the ends past the second knot. That's it, the job is finished!

Option #2. Making blinds from leftover non-woven wallpaper

Another option that can be used to decorate a balcony. After renovation, many people do not know where to place the remaining wallpaper, but we suggest making original paper blinds from them. By the way, Chinese housewives were the first to make paper curtains to decorate bedrooms, and you can use this option on the balcony.

First measure the width/height of the windows. Then add about another 25% to the height, because the wallpaper will fold like an accordion.

Upon completion of measurements, prepare:

  • wallpaper;
  • tape (regular and double-sided);
  • hole punch (can be replaced with an awl);
  • glue;
  • ruler;
  • large beads;
  • scissors;
  • tape (its color should match the color of the wallpaper);
  • fastener (take it from an old sports jacket).

The further algorithm of actions should look like this.

Step 2Fold the resulting workpiece into one even strip, as shown in the image.

Step 3Punch all layers of wallpaper using a hole punch or awl.

Step 4Carefully widen the hole you made.

Step 5Pass a ribbon through the hole (if desired, you can replace it with a clothes cord). Using this tape you will open paper blinds.

Step 6Place the accordion on the floor, straightening it.

Step 7Tie a cord at the top and secure it with tape.

Step 8Cut off the excess cord from the bottom, leaving a small margin for further manipulation.

Step 9Fold the blinds at the bottom to create a sort of peacock tail. It's quite simple. Then glue the last 5 folds together and secure with double-sided tape.

Step 10Install the jacket fastener onto the cord.

Step 11Shorten the ribbon to the required length; you can decorate the end with a bead.

Step 12Attach the finished blinds to the window using the same double-sided tape.

Such blinds will look fresh and original, in no way inferior to their “store” counterparts. There are other varieties of these products - for example, with several parallel cords.

Option #3. Making Japanese curtains

An excellent option for decorating spacious balconies and loggias. The production of such curtains initially meant the use of only natural fabrics - linen or cotton. If your budget is very limited, then give preference to non-stretchable materials. And one more important point: the surface of Japanese curtains should be perfectly smooth, without waves or folds.

First, cut the panels using the instructions below.

Step 1. Measure the width of the window opening, divide the resulting figure by 60 cm. This way you will determine the required number of panels. And if the width is divided by 60, then the panels will be installed close to each other. If it is not a multiple of 60, then round up in order to subsequently overlap the panels.

Step 2. Measure the height from the cornice, add another 10 cm to the resulting value (for allowances).

Step 3. Multiply the resulting length by the number of panels - this will allow you to find out the required length of the fabric if the width is 60 cm. With a larger width, the length decreases proportionally.

Step 4. Open the panels on a piece of material, process the bottom and side edges.

Step 5. Smooth out the panels and then treat top part. The plank that will be attached to the cornice must have Velcro (the latter is called Velcro).

After this, you can proceed directly to sewing - for this:

  • smooth out the Velcro;
  • lay the curtain so that the top edge is visible;
  • place Velcro on the seam allowance with the front side and secure with pins;
  • stitch everything;
  • lay the curtain, bend the Velcro to the wrong side;
  • secure everything with pins and stitch;
  • iron the fabric until it is perfectly smooth;
  • Make a drawstring at the bottom and insert a weighting agent into it;
  • insert the top into the holder.

Option number 4. Making a thread curtain

Such decor looks impressive, so it can become a true decoration of your balcony. If desired, this curtain can be made at home.

For work, prepare:

  • dense plastic strip(it can also be wooden or cardboard) of the required size;
  • wide fabric for trim decoration;
  • thread with a thickness of at least 0.2 cm;
  • hammer;
  • glue gun;
  • lighter;
  • thin nails (5-6 pieces) to attach the strip to the opening.

After preparation, begin work on making thread curtains.

Step 1. Measure the height of the window opening. The length of one thread will consist of the height of the opening multiplied by 2, the width of the strip multiplied by 4, and 2 cm of margin. For example, if the height of the opening is 1.5 m and the width of the strip is 2 cm, then the length of one thread will be 3.1 m.

Step 2. Cut pieces of thread to the required size. Calculate in advance how many of these pieces you will need, but approximately it is 400-500 pieces. For convenience, you can perform the work in stages: cut, for example, a hundred threads - attach, etc.

Step 3. Attach the threads to the bar. Do this with a regular knot, just like in macrame: fold one piece in half, throw it over the bar, and thread the ends through the loop that has formed. Use a glue gun to secure the loop. Below is demonstrated how to properly attach the threads.

Step 4. Distribute all the threads evenly, and then mask the gaps through which the bar is visible (do this with a thin knitting needle or with your hands). After this, carefully trim the pieces.

Step 5. Burn the ends of the threads with a lighter - this will make the product last longer. Alternatively, you can dip the ends (maximum 0.5 cm) in glue.

Step 6. The ends of the plank can be hidden with pieces of fabric attached with a stapler or glue and folded onto the wrong side (the one that will be attached to the wall).

Note! If you wish, you can put beads on the threads - this will make the curtain look even more attractive.

Step 7 All that remains is to attach the finished curtain to the opening. Use small finishing nails for this. That's it, the work is finished.

Such curtains can decorate not only the balcony, but also any other room. They will also look great on the doors or windows of a country house.
