Psalm 16. This psalm is sung on behalf of a man perfect according to God. The Circumstances of Writing the Psalm

Psalm to David

1 The Lord said to my Lord, Sit at my right hand, until I make your enemies your footstool.

2 The Lord will send the rod of power from Zion, and rule in the midst of your enemies.

3 With Thee began in the day of Thy strength, in Thy holy lords, from the womb before the day of Thy kindred.

4 The Lord swears and will not repent: You are a priest forever, according to the order of Melchizedek.

5 The Lord has crushed the right hand of Thee in the day of His wrath, the king.

6 He judges by the tongue, he will fulfill the fall, he will crush the heads of the lands of many.

7 From the stream on the way he drinks, for this sake he will lift up his head.

Psalm 110

Alleluia

1 Let us confess Thee, O Lord, with all my heart in the council of the upright and in the assembly.

2 Great works of the Lord, found in all His wills.

3 Confession and splendor are His work, and His righteousness endures forever and ever.

4 Memory has created His miracles, the Lord is merciful and generous.

5 He will give food to those who fear Him; He will remember His covenant forever.

6 He will build a strength of his works among his people; he will give them an inheritance of language.

7 The works of his hands are truth and judgment; all his commandments are faithful,

8 established for ever and ever, created in truth and uprightness.

9 He sent deliverance to his people: he commanded his covenant forever. Holy and terrible is His name.

10 The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, but understanding is good to all who do it. His praise endures forever and ever.

Psalm 111

Alleluia, Aggeevo and Zakhariino

1 Blessed is the man, fear the Lord; in his commandments he will delight greatly.

2 His seed shall be mighty on the earth; the generation of the upright shall be blessed:

3 Glory and riches are in his house, and his righteousness endures forever and ever.

4 Ascension in the darkness is the light of the righteous, merciful and generous, and righteous.

5 A good man is generous and giving: he will arrange his words in judgment, as if he would not move for a century.

6 The righteous will be remembered forever.

7 He will not fear evil at the hearing,

8 His heart is ready to trust in the Lord. Be firm in his heart, it will not be afraid until it looks at its enemies.

9 Spread, give to the poor, his righteousness endures forever and ever, his horn will be lifted up in glory.

10 The sinner will see and be angry, he will gnash his teeth and melt, the desire of the sinner will perish.

Glory:

Psalm 112

Alleluia

1 Praise the Lord, children, praise the name of the Lord.

2 May the name of the Lord be blessed from now on and forever.

3 From the rising of the sun to the west, praise be to the name of the Lord.

4 The Lord is high above all tongues: above the heavens is his glory.

5 Who is the Lord our God? Alive on high

6 Look down on the humble in heaven and on earth,

7 You raise up the poor out of the ground, and out of the dunghill you raise up the poor,

8 make him sit with the princes, with the princes of his people,

9 Instilling barrenness in the house, the mother rejoices over the children.

Psalm 113

Alleluia

1 In the exodus of Israel from Egypt, to the house of Jacob from the people of the barbarians,

2 Judea was his holy place, Israel was his province.

3 Seeing the sea and fleeing, the Jordan has turned back,

4 The mountains rise up like lambs, and the hills like sheep.

5 What are you, the sea, how did you run away? And you, Jordan, how did you return back?

6 Mountains, like rams, and hills, like lambs of sheep?

7 From the presence of the Lord the earth moved, from the presence of the God of Jacob,

8 who turned a stone into pools of water, and insects into springs of water.

9 Not to us, Lord, not to us, but to Your name give glory, in Your mercy and Your truth.

10 But not when the nations speak: where is their God?

11 But our God in heaven and on earth, create every tree that pleases.

12 The idols of the tongue are silver and gold, the work of human hands.

13 They have mouths and speak not; eyes they have and do not see,

14 They have ears and hear not; they have nostrils and do not smell,

15 They have their hands, and they will not touch; they have their feet, and they will not walk; they will not shout with their throats.

16 Let those who do it be like them, and all who hope in it.

17 The house of Israel trusts in the Lord; they have a helper and protector.

18 The house of Aaron trusts in the Lord; they have a helper and protector.

19 Those who fear the Lord have put their trust in the Lord; they have a helper and a protector.

20 The Lord remembered us, blessed us to eat, blessed the house of Israel, blessed the house of Aaron,

21 blessed there are those who fear the Lord, the small and the great.

22 May the Lord add to you, and to you, and to your sons.

23 Bless you the Lord, who made heaven and earth.

24 The heavens are the heavens of the Lord, but the earth he gave to the sons of men.

25 Not the dead shall praise Thee, O Lord, below all who descend into hell,

26 but we who live will bless the Lord from now on and forever.

Psalm 114

Alleluia

1 Love, for the Lord will hear the voice of my supplication,

2 For incline your ear to me, and in my days I will call.

3 Having covered me with diseases of death, having found me the troubles of hell, I have found sorrow and sickness, and called on the name of the Lord:

4 O Lord, deliver my soul. Merciful is the Lord and Righteous, and our God is merciful.

5 Lord protect the babes: humble yourself, and save me.

6 Return, my soul, to your rest, for the Lord has done good to you.

7 For my soul is taken away from death, my eyes from tears, and my feet from creeping.

8 I will please the Lord in the land of the living.

Glory:

Psalm 115

Alleluia

1 Faithful, the same exclaimed, but I humbled myself very much.

2 But I rech in my anger: every man is a lie.

3 What shall I repay the Lord for all that I repay?

4 I will take up the cup of salvation and call on the name of the Lord,

5 I will give my prayers to the Lord before all His people.

6 Honorable before the Lord is the death of His saints.

7 O Lord, I am Your servant, I am Your servant and the son of Your handmaid; thou hast torn my bonds.

8 I will devour thee a sacrifice of praise, and in the name of the Lord I will call.

9 I will give my prayers to the Lord before all his people,

10 in the courts of the house of the Lord, in your midst, Jerusalem.

Psalm 116

Alleluia

1 Praise the Lord, all nations; praise Him, all people,

2 For his mercy is established upon us, and the truth of the Lord endures forever.

Psalm 117

Alleluia

1 Confess to the Lord, for He is good, for His mercy is forever.

2 Let the house of Israel say, For he is good, for his mercy endures forever.

3 Let the house of Aaron say, For he is good, for his mercy endures forever.

4 Let all those who fear the Lord say: For he is good, for his mercy endures forever.

5 Out of affliction called on the Lord, and heard me into space.

6 The Lord is my helper, and I will not fear what man does to me.

7 The Lord is my Helper, and I will look at my enemies.

8 It is better to trust in the Lord than to trust in man.

9 It is better to trust in the Lord than to trust in princes.

10 All the nations surrounded me, and resisted them in the name of the Lord,

11 went around me, and resisted them in the name of the Lord,

12 Surrounded me like a honeycomb, and burned like fire in thorns, and resisted them in the name of the Lord.

13 I am turned away to feed, and the Lord is pleasant to me.

14 My strength and my song is the Lord, and be me to salvation.

15 A voice of joy and salvation in the villages of the righteous: the right hand of the Lord, make power.

16 The right hand of the Lord exalt me; the right hand of the Lord make strength.

17 I will not die, but I will live, and let us do the works of the Lord.

18 The Lord punishes me with punishment, but he will not put me to death.

19 Open for me the gates of righteousness; when you enter into me, let us confess to the Lord.

20 This is the gate of the Lord; the righteous shall enter into it.

21 Let us confess to Thee, for Thou hast heard me, and Thou hast been to my salvation.

22 The stone that builds up carelessly, this was at the head of the corner:

23 This was from the Lord, and there is wonder in our eyes.

24 This is the day which the Lord has made, let us rejoice and be glad in it.

25 O Lord, save me, O Lord, make haste.

26 Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord; bless you from the house of the Lord.

27 God the Lord, and appear to us: make a feast in the speeding way of the horns of the altars.

28 Thou art my God, and we will confess Thee, Thou art my God, and I will exalt Thee. Let us confess to Thee, for Thou hast heard me, and Thou hast been to my salvation.

29 Confess to the Lord, for he is good, for his mercy endures forever.

Glory:

According to the 16th kathisma,
Trisagion according to Our Father:

Same troparia, tone 1: Yin peace awaits you, soul, and the Judge wants Your rebuke, secret and fierce. Thou shalt not abide in those here, but precede the crying Judges: God, cleanse me and save me.

Glory: As if I had sinned with many and with immeasurable ulcers, I am, Savior, sinning, I pray Your mercy, Christ: visit the doctor of the sick, and heal, and save me.

And now: My soul, what do you carelessly live being lazy? Why don’t you worry about the evil ones, who did you do in your life? Strive to correct yourself first, even the Lord will not close the door for you. O Mother of God, crouch down and cry out: Hope of the hopeless, save me, having sinned a lot against You, Most Pure Lady.

Lord, have mercy (40) and prayer:

Holy Lord, Living in the Highest, and with Your all-seeing eye look at all creation, We bow our souls and bodies to You, and we pray to You, Holy of Holies: stretch out Your invisible hand from Your holy dwelling, and bless us all, and forgive us every sin, voluntary and involuntary, in word or deed. Grant us, Lord, tenderness, grant spiritual tears from the soul, for the cleansing of many of our sins, grant Your great mercy on Your world and on us, Your unworthy servants. For blessed and glorified is your name, the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, now and forever, and forever and ever, amen.

. Hear, O Lord, my truth.

These words are filled with great confidence. The Psalmist mentions the truth here, not in praise of himself, and not because he pretends to be a righteous man, but as if he says this: since I rightly ask for your help, and I want to get rid of what I endure unjustly, persecuted by Saul for no reason, then hear and fulfill my request.

Inspire my prayer not in flattering lips,

- because God listens to the prayer not of flattering lips, but of a pure language and accustomed to learn in the words of God.

. From Your face my fate will come.

He clearly prays that the Only Begotten will be his judge.

My eyes see right.

To ask the Son for righteous judgment, by which he judged us.

. Thou hast tempted my heart, thou hast visited at night;.

It is customary to call blasphemy against God untrue to divine Scripture. For it is said: "untruth in the height of the verb" ().

. As if my mouth would not speak the deeds of men.

It also teaches to beware of not saying anything mortal and human.

For the words of your mouth, I kept the cruel path.

According to Thy commandments I have entered the narrow and strait gates.

. Make my steps in Thy paths.

This word teaches us not to rely on ourselves, but to be affirmed in God. The “path and” of the Lord are the keeping of the commandments.

. I cried out, as if you heard me, O God.

It is said: "you heard" - instead of: "you will hear." It was not in vain that I called to You, but having experienced Your love for mankind; because often I was heard by You, calling You. "Appeal" is a thought aspiring to God.

Bow your ear to me.

God is all ear, because He hears everything.

. Shut up yours here.

The word "here" ( ecclesiastical) is fat. Edition of the "ABC of Faith" means a very great prosperity of the enemies.

. Cast your eyes on the earth.

They, he says, had one goal, to attract, no matter how it was, to the earth and incline to carnal wisdom.

. Your weapon is from the enemy your hands.

The soul of a righteous man, especially one who attracts sinners from impiety to godliness, is like a sharpened sword against the spirits of malice. This is the sword which You yourself, the Lord, sharpened against Your enemies, "deliver ... from the enemy of your hand" (). Who then are the enemies of the hand of God, if not opposed to faith in the Only Begotten of God, who is also the hand of God?

. Lord, from the small from the earth I strip.

He prays that the wicked will be excommunicated and, as it were, separated from the little ones. Who are these “little ones” if not those of whom it is said: “many ... the essence of the call, few are the chosen ones” ()?

And their wombs are filled with Thy hidden ones.

They, he says, enjoyed everything worthy; wherefore, they have come to such contempt that they are lawless. The words are: "thy secret"- means: with those secret punishments, of which you have knowledge and which I do not know, fill their wombs or, speaking more precisely, themselves.

Satisfying sons, and leaving the remains of your baby.

They were filled with all kinds of iniquity and passed it on to their children, even leaving their sons to their babies, that is, their grandchildren.

. But I will show myself in truth to Your face.

I will not be like them, and I will not be satisfied with what they are satisfied, but with righteous deeds I will be filled with Your glory.

Psalm 16 is part of a series of songs that were written by King David at a time when Saul was still sitting on the throne of Israel and was looking for his death. Those songs are distinguished by despair, which is visible through the lines, because all the supporters and close associates of Saul then took up arms against the psalmist and it was possible to find help only in the Lord.

History of writing

The inscription of the text indicates that the psalm was written by the hand of David himself, this confirms the original in Hebrew and the Greek translation of the Psalter. In its content, psalm 16 is a prayer to God with a request to save the author from trials. In the same way as in the texts of this period, in the 16th song, the author explains to listeners and readers his innocence.

In Psalm 16, David hopes that the Lord will hear him and be just

A large number of songs from this period allow us to conclude that the persecution was of a continuous nature - Saul did not want to retreat and pursued his servant for a long time and stubbornly.

The interpretation of the psalm

The psalmist considers the Lord to be his only defense, whom he calls to speak in his defense and judge. Each verse of the psalm is an appeal to the Almighty:

Important! The whole psalm is a pronounced hope of the psalmist in God. He understands that only the Almighty can save him from troubles and persecution, grant him a quiet and serene life.

Reading Rules

When reading a psalm in Church Slavonic in a church, a Christian must understand that this is a wonderful prayer:

Hear, O Lord, my truth, heed my supplication, inspire my prayer not in flattering lips. From Your face my fate will come, let my eyes see what is right. Thou hast tempted my heart; As if my mouth did not speak the deeds of men, for the words of your mouth, I kept the paths cruel. Make my steps in Thy paths, lest my steps be moved. I cried out that thou hast heard me, O God, incline thy ear to me and hear my words. Surprise Thy mercy, save those who trust in Thee from those who oppose Thy right hand. Save me, Lord, like the apple of an eye, cover me in the blood of Your wings. From the face of the wicked, who sharpened me, strike my obsessed soul. Shut your fat, their mouths speak pride. Those who cast me out now bypassed me, laying their eyes on the earth. Explaining me like a lion is ready to catch, and like a skimen dwell in the secret. Resurrect, Lord, I go ahead, and zap them, deliver my soul from the wicked, Your weapon from the enemy of Your hand. Lord, from the little ones from the earth, I divided them in their stomachs, and their wombs were filled with Thy hidden ones, their sons were satisfied, and left their remains as a baby. But I will appear in truth to Your face, I will be satisfied, when I appear to me to Your glory.

First, you should analyze your life, because David confirms that he led a righteous lifestyle and did not hold evil against his enemy. He completely denies his guilt, because he is sure that he lived righteously and fulfilled the law of God. He then urges readers to watch their words and lives, giving no place to sin. Then he sets out his problem - persecution by enemies, and only then asks God to help.

In order to better understand David's prayer, it is necessary to read a psalm in Russian:

1 Hear, O Lord, my righteousness; heed my cry; accept the prayer from the lips of the undeceitful.

2 May judgment come to me from your presence; May Your eyes look to righteousness.

3 You tried my heart, you visited me at night, you tried me and found nothing; my mouth does not depart from my thoughts.

4 In the works of men, according to the word of your mouth, I guarded myself from the ways of the oppressor.

5 Set my steps in your ways, so that my steps do not waver.

6 I call to you, for you will hear me, O God; incline your ear to me, hear my words.

7 Reveal Thy wondrous mercy, Savior of those who trust [in Thee] from those who oppose Thy right hand.

8 Keep me as the apple of your eye; hide me in the shadow of your wings

9 from the presence of the wicked who attack me, from the enemies of my soul who surround me:

10 They are shut up in their fatness; they speak with their mouths haughtily.

11 At every step we take, they now surround us; they fixed their eyes to bring me down to the ground;

12 they are like a lion that is hungry for prey, like a kimon that sits in hidden places.

13 Arise, O Lord, warn them, bring them down. Deliver my soul from the wicked with your sword,

14 From the people, by Your hand, O Lord, from the people of the world, whose lot is in this life, whose wombs You fill from Your treasures. their sons are well-fed and will leave the remnant to their children.

15 But in truth I will look upon your face; awakening, I will be satisfied with your image.

You can use the interpretation of the holy fathers or Professor Lopukhin. It is recommended to read the text:

  • during severe trials;
  • when it is necessary to protect oneself from enemies and persecution;
  • during troubles and problems;
  • for guard.

Trisagion according to Our Father:

Troparion, tone 1: Another world awaits you, soul, and the Judge intends to expose your secret and evil deeds. Do not remain immersed in earthly things, but before the end cry to the Judge: “God, cleanse me and save me!”

Glory: I am embraced by many sins and countless ulcers, Savior, sinning, but I pray Your mercy, Christ: “Doctor of the sick, visit, and heal, and save me!”

And now: My soul, why do you carelessly live in laziness? Why don't you worry about the evil deeds you've done in your life? Try to improve before the Lord closes the door for you. Run to the Theotokos, fall down and cry out: “Hope of the hopeless, save me, who have sinned a lot against You, Most Pure Lady!”

Lord, have mercy (40) and prayer:

Holy Lord, who lives in the highest and sees all creation with Your all-seeing eye! We bow before Thee with soul and body, and we pray to Thee, Holy of Holies: stretch out Thy invisible hand from Thy holy habitation, and bless us all, and forgive us every sin, both voluntary and involuntary, in word or deed.
