Snow guards for roofs made of corrugated sheets - functions, types, installation. Snow guards for corrugated roofing: types and installation instructions How to attach an angle snow guard to corrugated sheeting

Lack of snow protection can lead not only to damage roofing And drainage systems, but also cause damage to passers-by and parked cars.

To avoid such trouble, you can install a special snow guard.

The construction and installation of snow guards on the roof is not as complicated a process as it seems at first glance and is accessible even to a beginner in the construction business.

In this article you will learn why snow guards are needed and how to properly install them on the roof of a private house.

A snow retainer is a special design that allows snow not to fall from the roof, that is, the snow does not come off in one layer. Only melt water will flow down. Many people believe that it is not necessary to install such snow clamps, but as practice has shown, this is important detail which should not be neglected.

There are two main functions of such an important roof structure:

  1. prevents sharp and sudden snow masses from falling off the roof itself;
  2. They hold the snow on the roof so that it melts there.

There are several types of such designs, and when choosing them, it is necessary to take into account several important factors:

  • direct angle of inclination of the slope;
  • how much precipitation (snow) will fall in the area;
  • what material is the roof made of?

There are two main types of this design:

  • type of snow retainer that allows snow to pass through;
  • the second type is impermeable to snow.

The choice of any of the proposed designs depends on personal motives, as well as on the factors mentioned above.

Snow retention in action

It is interesting that in different stores there are various names: snow blocking fences, snow barriers and so on. It is likely that the names characterize the functions of such installations.

For example, snow barriers keep all the snow on the roof (of any volume). And the snow will melt on the house in its natural way. The snow will not melt even in parts. Snow cutters - as the name suggests, this design allows you to divide a whole piece of snow cover into small pieces.

Some parts fall, others melt directly on the roof surface. The advantage of the design is that the snow does not fall in a continuous layer, which ensures safety for people and also does not damage the roofing.

Of course, snow guards come in different shapes, sizes, and materials of manufacture.. And before choosing, you should focus on how much snow should be retained.

Types of design, advantages

The most popular version of such designs is tubular type.

This unit is simple design from brackets into which two tubes of the same diameter, approximately 15-30 mm, are inserted.

In fact, this type can be considered universal and can be used on any material (wood, etc.).

And according to professionals, this type of design is considered the most effective. In addition, it can be installed on a roof that has been in use for a long time.

The bracket itself looks like a simple plate with “outlets” for pipes. Often its height is no more than 15 cm. It is attached to the pitched part using a special horizontal stick.

To do this, take special screws that can be attached to metal.

NOTE!

When installing this type of structure, it is necessary to install it along the line load-bearing wall . This is necessary so that the load is distributed evenly. The essence of the operation of such a device is the gradual passage of snow (snow will pass between the pipes).

This version of the snow retainer is popular and has received the status of the most promising installation. Also, the tubular structure must be installed exclusively along one line, the option of taking a running start is excluded. If the structure is the color of the roof, then it is almost invisible on the roof.

The process of installing such a system is quite simple:

  • mark the holes and drill them with a drill;
  • assemble the kit itself, but do not tighten the bolts;
  • the existing assembled bracket must be secured through the roof to the sheathing;
  • attach the lower part of the structure to the cornice ( at load-bearing wall level);
  • Now just connect the components by tightening the bolts.

Tubular type

Another good option for saving from improper snow melting is snow stops (hooks). From the name it is clear that in appearance such structures resemble hooks.

But they can't hold much snow Therefore, it is best to use them in cases where the roof will be cleaned on a regular basis. Often such hooks are mounted on.

Experts advise using this option as an auxiliary option to other, more reliable systems, in places where a lot of snow falls.

Snow retainer - hook

Lattice type snow guard. This type of construction is suitable in places where there is a large amount of snow, since special grille can withstand strong pressure. The snow is retained on the roof, and only melt water flows down.

Install them at a large angle. The efficiency of such an installation is affected by its height (grille height). The color of the grille can be matched to the color of the roof.

The maximum height reaches 20 cm.

Lattice type

The corner version of the snow guard is relevant where there is not much snow. Most often they are mounted on or, because the structure itself is made from these materials.

From the name it is obvious that externally, this type of installation resembles a corner on which there are special fastenings for installation. It is not recommended to install on slopes above 30 degrees.

They are attached directly to the roof itself, you can arrange them randomly, or in one line.

Corner view

Some people prefer to use wooden log as a way to retain snow. The option is not very common. You can meet him on the rooftops different types, for example, on a shingle roof. It is attached to the roof on large hooks.

L Naturally, the size of the log affects its capabilities, that is, the larger it is, the more snow it can hold. To have the effect of such a design, it is worth attaching it at a distance of 2-3 cm from the roof.

This leads to a small amount of The snow melts and flows down the drain, and most of the sediment remains on the roof and melts in its natural way.

Installing snow guards on the roof with your own hands

How to install snow guards on the roof? If you decide to install snow guards yourself, then you need to consider the type of roof and the amount of rainfall.

After that, buy what you need and begin the installation process itself.

In essence, there is nothing complicated here, you just need to know some rules for installing such a structure.

If you are building a house from scratch, or replacing the roof, immediately think about installing such structures. This will help you save time, effort and nerves.

The installation process itself does not take much time and does not require serious preparation.. It is enough to know a couple of rules and follow the existing algorithm of actions step by step.

Since metal tiles are the most common roofing option, it is worth considering the option of installation on just such a surface. Learn more about installing snow protection on metal tiles.

CAREFULLY!

Its very design suggests that snow will slide down it very often, and its smooth surface cannot hold snow on its own. During the day it begins to melt and go flat, and this can lead to scratches on the surface of the metal tiles, which in turn will lead to corrosion and damage to the coating.

A roof of this type can accommodate different types of structures:

  • tubular;
  • lattice;
  • corner

Installation of tubular type snow guards:

  • first step - outline where exactly the snow retention system will be located;
  • costs enhance special additional bar;
  • an important stage of installation, assembly of the structure, but do not tighten the bolts;
  • We begin to fasten the roofing material, where it is necessary to make holes on top for the fastening itself. Such holes should be located only on the lower wave, the one adjacent to the sheathing itself;
  • Next comes attaching the structure to the slope using 8*60 mm bolts. Be sure to waterproof the holes using rubber pads. The very step between the bracket depends on two factors, the slope and length. For example, a step of 50 cm is quite enough, even for the most powerful structure;
  • The last step of installing the system is pipe insertion. Still have questions? Watch the video below.

Installation of a tubular snow guard

Mounting step

It is important to remember that the system must be mounted only above a load-bearing wall.

Installing a snow guard on other materials

Corrugated sheeting is another popular type of roofing. Like metal tiles, it has sensitivity to temperature changes.

It is critically necessary to install a snow guard on such a roof. Learn more about installing snow protection under corrugated sheets.

When the snow melts during the day and freezes in the evening, Ice flakes form which can scratch the material., and this will eventually lead to the fact that the galvanized coating deteriorates and scratches form in those places, as a result of which the material begins to rust.

If you choose this roofing material, you can also use tubular or lattice snow guards.

In fact, installing the structure on corrugated sheets is not a very complicated procedure, and almost no different from installation on metal tiles.

Installation of the structure on corrugated sheets:

  1. the fastening itself is carried out through the material;
  2. be sure to strengthen the sheathing;
  3. small holes for fastenings should be reinforced with rubber gaskets;
  4. installation of the structure should be carried out only on the lower part of the wave of material.

Installation of hooks

In cases where the structure is attached to a ready-made roof covering, you should understand that you will have to disassemble it in order to strengthen the sheathing and it is logical to think about this in advance - during construction.

Conclusion

An element such as a snow guard is necessary on the roof of any building, regardless of the style and location. Installing an additional element will allow your roof to maintain its strength and reliability, and will also help ensure the safety of others.

When choosing the right and high-quality design, carefully study what it is made of. Whatever type of snow guard you choose, it is not necessary to install it around the entire perimeter, since they can be correctly positioned only in in the right places roofs.

It is enough to simply install them in the most dangerous places and this will ensure the efficient functioning of additional elements and at the same time save money spent on roofing equipment. Be careful when making a decision, consult with specialists and your choice will be fully justified.

In contact with

IN snowy winters pitched roofs are a hidden source of danger, because the accumulated solid sediments can fall on passers-by at any moment. To avoid this, snow guards are installed on the roof. The use of the device is extremely necessary if the finishing is made of smooth corrugated board. Thanks to snow retainers, solid precipitation remains on the roof surface, and when it warms up, melt water flows down the gutters. Let's find out what this device is, its types, and provide installation instructions.

Snow barrier systems differ in shape, size, material, as well as design reliability. For roofs made of profiled sheets, structures are used in which a structure made of pipes, gratings or corners acts as a snow barrier. Let's look at each type in more detail.

Lattice

Lattice snow retainer

This is the simplest, but at the same time quite effective type of snow retention devices. The universal design consists of brackets that are attached to the roof and vertical grilles. Such barriers are capable of trapping even the smallest pieces of ice, which can cause a large mass of snow to accumulate on the roof. Therefore, snow retainers of this type are installed only on roofs with high load-bearing capacity.

All parts are made of galvanized steel and painted with moisture-resistant paint, so the gratings can be matched to the color of the roof. As for the dimensions of the grid, they can vary depending on the model, and the snow-holding capacity of the system directly depends on them. The smallest barriers are about 5 cm high, and the largest are 20 cm high.

Tubular

Tubular snow guard

The principle of their operation is slightly different from lattice ones. In addition to detention large quantity snow, tubular systems gradually let it through, which reduces the load on the roof. Such snow guards can be installed on roofs of any type and with an inclination angle of up to 60°.

This is interesting: these systems are not installed on roofs with a slope of more than 60° - it is believed that precipitation does not linger on them at all.

Like the previous type, tubular structures are made of galvanized steel with subsequent application of a paint layer. As a result, the product is durable and not subject to corrosion. The color can be matched to any roof. Tubular snow barriers are equipped with two pipes with a diameter of 15 to 30 mm and a length of 1 to 3 m, as well as fastening elements and brackets with plates for fastening to the roof. The number of supports depends on the length of the pipe.

Corner

Corner snow guards on the roof made of corrugated sheets

This type is considered the least successful, since the corner snow retainers completely prevent the passage of snow. Therefore, in regions with significant rainfall, these devices are not used. This is due to the fact that their height often does not exceed 6 cm. In addition, corner snow barriers are made from metal sheets comparable in thickness to corrugated sheets. Therefore, they do not have sufficient strength to hold large snow piles.

It is advisable to use such products only in regions with low snow cover and install them on roofs with a slope of no more than 30°. In this case, the latter will have to be cleaned from time to time from snow and accumulated dirt.

There is another type of snow barriers for roofs made of corrugated sheets - these are point barriers. But these systems appeared relatively recently and it is too early to talk about their reliability. However, compared to corner devices, point devices have an advantage in terms of fastening - their installation involves connection not with the sheathing, but with the metal of the roofing itself. They keep only part of the snow on the roof. However, this is enough to prevent an avalanche.

Installation Features

The installation of each type of snow retention system on a corrugated roofing may have some features. For example, installation of corner products is the simplest and is done using self-tapping screws with a rubber washer. Fastening with a self-tapping screw is carried out into the wave of profiled flooring. To install corner barriers, you can do without reinforcing the sheathing, however fastening element should cut firmly into the wood. Otherwise, the structure will be fragile. The corner snow retainer fastenings must be placed through one wave.

As for tubular and lattice systems, their snow retention elements are installed on the roof using support brackets. The latter are attached in the same way as corner products - with self-tapping screws. Both types are located along the entire perimeter of the building, along the slope. They are arranged in one or several rows.

Installation of any type of such systems is not challenging task. This work can be done with your own hands, without the help of a builder. Let's move on directly to installation.

Preparation for installation

Before you start attaching snow guards, you need to decide on the type of snow guards and the number of rows. As mentioned earlier, the choice should be made based on the intensity of precipitation in your region. It is important to take into account the angle of inclination of the roof on which the barrier is planned to be installed, and the presence of a fence on the roof.

Important: the device must be installed higher roof fencing. However, if this is not possible, the designs can be combined.

Now let's start marking. We measure the perimeter of the roof and mark it optimal places stop locations. The distance from the last bracket to the edge of the pipe should not exceed 300 mm. The maximum distance between brackets is 1,100 mm.

Typically, the snow retainer is installed at a distance of 600 mm from the edge of the eaves overhang and parallel to it. If you need to install another barrier, then it can be placed no closer than 2-3 meters from the neighboring one.

Tubular snow guards

To work you will need the following tools:

  • yardstick;
  • marker;
  • set of drills;
  • drill;
  • self-tapping screws with rubber gaskets (usually included with the system).

At the end preparatory work you can proceed to install the system. As an example, let’s look at the installation of tubular snow guards, which are considered the most reliable, efficient and most popular.

Instructions for fastening using the example of a tubular structure

The installation procedure for tubular snow guards is as follows:

  1. In accordance with the markings, we attach the support brackets to the screws using a hammer drill.
  2. We insert the snow retention pipes into the holes of the bracket.
  3. To achieve the required length, the pipes are joined together. For this purpose, a special one-sided crimp is provided. The joint is fixed with a bolted connection.
  4. Similar actions are carried out on each side of the building, along the entire perimeter.
  5. Finally, you need to check the bolted connections again.

Photo example of step-by-step installation

Bolted connection tubes Winding up pipes Installing the support bracket

The installation procedure for lattice-type snow retainers is completely similar to the above. And the installation of corner products differs only in the absence of points 2 and 3.

Despite the fact that the use of special devices significantly increases safety and reduces wear and tear on the roof, do not forget about the need to regularly clean the roof. This will reduce the load on building construction and will extend their service life.

How to attach the snow guard

This type of protection has plates that follow the shape of the corrugated sheet ridge. Brackets are attached to them, which are fastened with screws to the roof itself. This ensures high reliability.

Advantages of Borge snow guards

  • Reliability. Made from high-quality materials, these structures last a long time and will not cause problems during operation. With the correct calculation of the roof load, complete protection is ensured.
  • Variety of colors. In the extensive collection it is easy to find a suitable shade that will fit perfectly into your general style roofs.
  • Long service life. The manufacturer provides a long warranty on its products.

Convenient, practical, easy to install and reliable snow guards will help you avoid roof problems and tragic situations. Their cost is fully justified by the functional load they perform.

Snow falling from roofs is dangerous for people, property and the building itself. An unexpected fall of snow mass or icicles from the roof can have consequences for the health and lives of people, lead to vehicle breakdowns, and damage the facade of a building.

In order to protect the area of potential snow melting, that is, the roof, special devices are used - snow retainers for corrugated sheeting. Roofing made from profiled decking requires stoppers due to the fairly smooth surface of the covering.

Snow stoppers or snow retainers are used on various types roofing systems. The devices are especially relevant on roofs with steep slopes, since the likelihood of spontaneous snow melting is much greater.

Roofing snow retainers for corrugated sheeting increase the degree of protection against falling snow, ice, and icicles. The surface of the material is smooth and slippery, a large volume of snow does not stay on it, and when there is a thaw, an ice crust forms. This leads to greater risks of damage.

Advantages of installing snow stops on a corrugated roof

  • Retention of snow mass on the roof until it melts, safe gradual melting of snow to avoid accidents.
  • Cutting large layers of snow into thin small pieces, increasing safety when the snow mass melts.
  • Protection of the building facade, roofing system and drainage systems from damage and functional unsuitability.

Snow guards for roofs made from corrugated sheets are not only reliable protection from damage, but also additional decoration of the roof.

Varieties

  1. Lattice. Installation is recommended only for high-strength rafter systems and bearing capacity. The design is able to withstand large volumes and weights of snow.
  2. Lamellar. They are fastened with corners; installation of perforated plates is carried out only on slopes of up to 30 degrees. Installation is quite simple, you can do it yourself, and ensures reliable snow retention.
  3. Tubular snow guards. Standard solution is the installation of systems of two rows of pipes with fasteners on brackets to rafter system. The design has an effective snow cutter function. The snow mass is retained and gradually cut between the pipe gaps.
  4. Corner snow guards. They completely prevent snow from melting, but if there is a large amount of snow, this can become a disadvantage, so it is not recommended for installation in regions with abundant snow. Suitable for roofs with a slope of up to 30 degrees.

Roofing snow retainer for roofs made of corrugated sheets copes well with snow loads correct selection design solution and type of device.

On roofs made of profiled decking, snow stops are recommended and help avoid many troubles. The decision to purchase devices is facilitated by arguments about increasing safety, protecting the building and property, human life and health.

The Turnkey Roofing company offers roofing materials on the market Russian Federation. Each type of roofing materials from different manufacturers is supplied with the necessary additional elements, accessories and components. Snow stoppers are also available in a wide range.

In winter, pitched roofs can pose a threat to people's safety as snow falls off them. Roofs made of corrugated sheets are especially dangerous, because they have a slippery, even surface. In this case, snow retainers for corrugated sheets are simply necessary. Snow guards for roofs made of corrugated sheets, which you can buy in our online store in Moscow, protect the metal covering from destruction. Ice tends to cause abrasions on the corrugated sheet, and when exposed to melt water, the roof succumbs to corrosion, which reduces the duration of the operational period. Snow retainers for corrugated sheets effectively retain snow, protecting the profile sheet.

Snow retainers for corrugated sheets include various components: reinforcing strips, bolts, screws, seals or tubes, which are placed on the roof thanks to special brackets. Snow guards for corrugated roofs can be galvanized or non-galvanized. Tubular versions of snow guards are widely in demand, as they withstand intense loads. To prevent the rusting process, snow guards for corrugated sheets are made of galvanized steel, coated with a protective layer powder paint. The snow retainers are fixed using self-tapping screws with rubber gaskets. The fastening elements (supports) are screwed through corrugated sheets into the wooden structure. The opening between the support attachment points is larger than the usual pitch of the sheathing for the corrugated sheet, therefore the sheathing must correspond to the length of the support and the fixation is made strictly into the tree. It is better to do this immediately before covering the roof with corrugated sheets, but if it is necessary to install snow guards on already finished roof from corrugated sheeting, partial dismantling of the corrugated sheet and reinforcement will be required wooden structure under the step of the snow retainer support.

Recommendation: Dear customers, pay attention to the number of supports for snow guards different types! All snow retainers are equipped with four supports for a three-meter snow retainer! Beware of low prices and fakes!

Snow guards for corrugated sheets, the price of which is quite affordable, are different forms, but it is more correct to design them simultaneously with the installation of the roof. This helps strengthen wooden beams for fixing, make fasteners without damaging the corrugated sheet. Snow guards for roofs made of corrugated sheets are equipped with a set of seals various sizes, which guarantees the tightness of the fastener. When installing snow guards, you should take into account their type, which is used for a specific coating. Today there are many various models snow retainers that differ from each other in design and fastening method. Tubular snow guards for profiled sheets are the most popular for metal roof, they come with a round or oval tube. They are installed parallel to the edge of the roof, retreating a certain distance of 70-100 cm from the eaves overhang. Calculation of snow retainers is possible in a checkerboard pattern or in a continuous line, it all depends on the slope and area of the roof. The standard size of the snow retainer for corrugated sheeting is three meters.

Types of snow guards for corrugated sheets and price

We always have in stock snow guards for roofs made of corrugated sheets, galvanized and with a small layer of zinc: colors RAL(RR) 8017, 8019(32), 3005, 3009(29), 3011, 5005, 6002(37),6005, 6020(11) ), 9005(33), 7004, 7024(23), 8004(750) and unpainted, which we can paint in any RAL color in 7 working days + 30% of the cost of the snow guard.

Video - snow falling off a corrugated roof in a warehouse

According to current current standards, the lion's part of the territory of Russia is located in a zone where in winter the weight of snow cover ranges from 180 to 320 kilograms per square meter of roof, which on average is about 250 kilograms. And, as you guessed, we are talking specifically about one square meter, and if we take the roof small house, approximately 80 square meters, then the snow cap on it can reach 20 tons!

Now do you realize how dangerous it is for snow to suddenly fall off such a roof? Therefore, in order to prevent derailment snow masses snow retainers are needed for roofing made of corrugated sheets - as the most slippery of all existing ones. And correctly selected snow stops and snow barriers will not only reduce the likelihood negative consequences all this, but will completely solve the problem. Shall we figure it out?

Snow, ice and roof made of modern metal profiles

It is absolutely normal for snow to accumulate on the roof over the winter and melt in the spring. And it’s not normal if it breaks down on someone’s head. It’s not for nothing, for example, that most roofs in Sweden are painted dark color, due to which the roof quickly heats up from the spring sun and the snow immediately melts, being held back by snow retainers required in that country.

That’s why in the spring it easily removes itself from the roof, slowly flowing into the drain: neatly, quickly, and in small parts. Believe me, this is not at all the same situation when huge layers of snow simply fall off under their own weight, despite the fact that the average roofing covering is not always as slippery as that of corrugated sheeting.

If no snow retainer is installed on such a roof, then things are bad. The slip coefficient of modern metal tiles and seam roofing is especially high, as is the case with all types of corrugated sheeting. Therefore, on roofs with a slope of 25 degrees or more, snow does not linger at all. After all, in the spring, compacted snow is heated by the sun through the metal itself, or by heat from interior space, and the snow avalanche flies down the water lubricant, and this is already much more dangerous situation. After all, it is precisely such uncontrolled falling of snow during a thaw that can lead to injury to people and damage to property.

In addition, if in one section of the roof a heavy snow mass has gone down, but the main layer of snow still remains in other places, the rafters will become skewed and the roof covering will deform. And now the pressure is snow, in other words - snow load, which we usually carefully calculate, will already be uneven.

In details:

Functions of modern snow retention systems

A properly selected snow retainer for a slippery corrugated roof can save not only property, but even human life. But in this matter you cannot stop at the first solution you come across - for each house it must be different, based on the type and parameters of the roof itself, the average snow and wind loads of a certain region.

Let's list the main functions of snow guards:

  1. Protection individual elements roofing and gutters.
  2. Protecting passing people and animals from snow and icicles.
  3. Protection of the roof system from deformation under the weight of snow masses.
  4. Protection of the foundation from melt water.
  5. Protection of house extensions from avalanche-like destructive snow.

Standard snow guards are systems of gratings, tubes or corners that are installed along the entire perimeter of the roof, about a meter from its edge. Moreover, on complex and long roof slopes Snow guards can even be installed in several tiers.

We select the type of snow guard according to its shape and purpose

Today, the most snow retainers are produced in terms of shape, design and purpose. And one wave behaves decently in some conditions, serving faithfully for decades, while others, under the same parameters, bend and break after the first winter. This is because you need to choose a snow retention system for a corrugated roof, which is characterized by a special speed of snow movement, wisely.

Corner or plate snow barriers

Corner snow guards are the simplest and most popular option for roof snow protection. These are small metal strips with two stops, protected by colored polymer. Therefore, these roofing elements can be easily matched to the overall color of the coating itself.

Usually, the general kit for such snow retainers includes standard-sized roofing screws, up to 60 pieces, as well as plugs, seals and capercaillie. But note for yourself that the quality of these components also differs from different manufacturers.

Corner snow retainers are good because during the melting period the snow does not linger near them and does not form ice layers in these places, but carefully moves along the roof into the gutter. But let us note that today not everyone is happy with this type of snow retention, because at some point the snow becomes higher than such slats and sometimes breaks them off. The result is repairs and loss of a fresh look. new roof. After all main drawback of snow barriers is the limited amount of snow they can stop. Usually it is equal to the height of the corners, but unfortunately not always.

The kits of ready-made corner snow guards include a support element, decorative overlays from roofing material and fastening elements. Additionally, there must be lining material, which for corner models rests with its flat part towards the ridge, and for lamellar ones - with its lower part towards the slope. The barrier is connected to the corner and the roofing material at the same time.

Metal spot snow guards

But modern point snow retainers have an advantage over corner ones. They are made of steel with polymer coating, in the form of a horseshoe, which repeats the shape of the end on the crest of the wave. Such snow retainers are used only on roofs made of metal tiles and corrugated sheets.

These are often made with your own hands, bending loops from small thin strips. And this makes sense, because point snow retainers each hold only a small layer of snow, and not the entire cap at once, which is why there is almost no risk of the fastenings breaking off. Essentially, such snow retainers retard snow melting rather than stop it altogether, helping the corrugated sheeting not be as slippery as it is.

And also, it is most convenient to work on a roof made of corrugated sheets with point snow retainers:

Snow stops made of polycarbonate

Many people are also attracted by modern snow guards made of polycarbonate. Their main advantage is that they do not damage the roof covering during installation and do not break the roof itself. Polycarbonate snow guards are easy to install; there is no need to prepare the surface or install additional structures under the roofing in order to somehow secure them. For installation, you will only need roofing screws - these are self-tapping screws with a washer, or special glue.

Another plus is that such snow retainers are easiest to calculate for a roof made of corrugated sheets. The shape and size allow them to be used for almost any form of roofing. After all, if you compare it with metal snow guards, the length of which is set at the factory, polycarbonate ones can be installed according to any parameters and on any slope.

And finally, transparent and lightweight material is not noticeable on the roof, so it will never spoil complex design projects. Just a few pieces are needed to protect ventilation pipes, antennas, skylights. After all, such snow guards are easy to install, even one at a time!

Tubular snow guards

Tubular snow catchers are indispensable for complex roofs and slippery roofing coverings, where modern corrugated sheets take almost the first place in the rating. These versatile designs are a delight great variety forms of fasteners that are easy to match to any width and height of corrugated sheet metal, which cannot be said about other types.

And here is another type of tubular snow guards:

The only disadvantage of such snow guards is that they are usually expensive. whereas the roof is often covered with corrugated sheeting due to the availability of this material. So is it worth betting on cheap roof expensive security system? Certainly! For your own safety.

Lattice snow retention systems

Lattice snow retainers are great for corrugated roofing, and at the same time they also serve as a certain decoration appearance roofs.

Lattice snow retainers are very similar to tubular ones, only here, instead of pipes, a special lattice serves as a supporting element. This grille is mounted on brackets in the same way as the pipes. Functionally, these snow retainers are more effective, since they have an increased area of resistance to snow, but the load on them, naturally, is therefore greater. That is why such snow retainers are attached to specially reinforced roof sheathing. Most often they can be seen on industrial and large facilities, and less often on the roofs of private houses.

Lattice snow retainers have brackets, between which there are sections in the form of frames made of angles or pipes, with vertical crossbars. Such snow guards can be easily lengthened or shortened by installing additional sections. But keep in mind: increased sizes of the gratings themselves always increase the volume of retaining snow. Therefore, it is not uncommon for such snow retainers to simply bend and break, especially on roofs made of corrugated sheets, where by spring the snow generally slides all the way to the edge of the roof. And the installation of lattice snow guards is more complicated than that of point or corner ones.

We calculate the installation and draw up a plan

The norms and rules for installing snow guards are regulated by SNiP 17.133.30.20.11 - this is the edition of SNiP 2.26.76. According to it, on the roofs of buildings with a slope of 5% and external drainage, snow retention systems are required, which must be attached to the roofing of the purlins and to the supporting structures. Here illustrative examples installation diagrams for these roofing elements:

The number of snow retainers must be calculated separately in each specific situation. Sometimes they are placed only in potentially dangerous places, for example, above entrance doors or a children's playground, and sometimes there is a need to install them absolutely over the entire roof in order to avoid uneven distribution of the load on it due to partial melting of snow.

We attach snow guards to corrugated sheets

On a corrugated roof, snow guards are attached in different ways. So, plate ones are always in a wave, corner ones are in a wave along the upper edge, the rest are through one wave for the lower edge. The installation of snow guards on such a roof occurs by attaching them to the roof structure, namely, to the load-bearing parts through special supports and brackets.

Ideally, such installation should only be carried out by qualified workers who have access to work at heights. This is not surprising, since snow guards have to be installed at the very edge of such a slippery roof, and this is the most dangerous area for work.

It is necessary to fasten the snow retainers to the profiled sheet using a through connection with the sheathing. For this purpose, it is advisable to increase the width of the frame beams in advance using additional beams so that the snow guards themselves can be secured with entire brackets.

For this purpose, it is necessary to use only those self-tapping screws that are equipped with special sealing rubber gaskets and are capable of maintaining the integrity of the coating, while protecting the holes from precipitation and leakage:

If you are installing on a roof with rather steep slopes, then try to make at least two rows of snow retainers, and increase the number of rows where the attic windows and the entrance to the house itself are located below. And also in those places where walls and roofing intersect, in order to even more optimally distribute the load on a thin profiled sheet.

But polycarbonate snow guards are good because, if desired, you can install them through the roofing:

Either without making holes at all, or in combined version:

Now let's figure out how to properly connect barrier-type snow retainers to each other on a corrugated roof. They look like a longitudinal strip, the cross-section of which resembles right triangle, and the high leg of this triangle corresponds to snow cover.

To secure the barriers to the roof surface, you will first need to screw in special angles. They are necessary in order to strengthen the structure and support its sides:

And also like this:

It is better to fasten the snow retainers during the installation of the corrugated roofing itself, so as not to disturb the waterproofing.

The distance between the fastenings itself must be calculated based on the angle of inclination of the roof slope. The greater the angle and the steeper the slope, the more often you need to install snow guards. In the case of a roof made of corrugated sheets, the brackets must be attached to the roof sheathing, and not to the roof covering, so that if the snow masses suddenly melt, the roof itself will not collapse.

Separately, we note that the self-tapping screws offered modern market, differ not only in price, but also in quality. Moreover, there are usually no complaints about the rod, but when it comes to the size of the thread or the quality of galvanization, the requirements must be high. This is very important for roofing! If the snow guards were installed correctly, then the fasteners will always be closed from moisture from entering from above.

Got it? Get to work!
