Norway is an amazing country... Northern, mountainous, cold... Even its name, which comes from the Old Norse word Norðrvegr - "the way to the north" is cold. But tourists invariably prefer it to warm seaside resorts and exotic Asian countries, because it has something that can be seen in rare parts of the world - unique fjords.

Fjords are a photo symbol, a visiting card of the country, something without which the sights of Norway are inconceivable. They are bays deeply cut into the mainland (from the Norwegian “fjord” - bay) in giant mountain corridors with a piercing blue expanse of transparent waters. The crystal clear waters reflect sheer cliffs, from which waterfalls fall into the abyss, and Norwegian villages huddle along the banks of the fjords, in which time seems to have stopped even under the Vikings.

Fjords are tectonic formations that took shape as a result of the movement of a glacier 10-12 thousand years ago. It was then that the first fjords of Norway were formed. The map of Norway is a map of the fjords that cut almost all of its coastline. The most famous Norwegian fjords are located in the southwestern part of the country.

Norway is home to two of the world's three longest fjords, and Geirangerfjord and Nærøyfjord have been designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site. They were named by National Geographic magazine as one of the most attractive tourist attractions in the world.

Tours to Norway, whose fjords attract thousands of tourists, always begin in the city of Bergen, called the "Gateway to the kingdom of the fjords." Bergen is considered the most beautiful city in Norway, famous for its musical history and abundance of fish restaurants. As a rule, tourists stay in Bergen for a few days.

Main fjords of Norway

Each fjord has its own characteristics and recognizable landscape.

Norway is a harsh and mysterious country, even the hard-to-pronounce names of its cities and natural objects can confuse and cause difficulties when preparing an independent trip. This article will help you navigate and figure out from which cities in Norway it is more convenient to make trips to the most attractive and peculiar sights of the country - the fjords.

I’ll make a reservation right away that, although there are examples of independent travel in the mountains and fjords using only public transport, nevertheless, due to the long distances and peculiarities of the Norwegian terrain, a car is the best and, I would say, the main means of transportation around the country by land ( plus in many places you have to cross by ferry). Another popular mode of transport in the country is the plane. Air communication connects all major cities in Norway. In order to see the fjords, it is not necessary to fly through the Norwegian capital Oslo: you can buy connecting tickets through Europe to cities close to one or another famous natural attraction (there are international airports in Bergen, Alesund, Stavanger).

Tickets for domestic flights in Norway, operated by the low-cost carrier Norwegian airlines, are relatively inexpensive (except for the additional cost of luggage, which, like all low-cost airlines, is paid separately, and meals on board).

You can choose a rental car in advance for traveling around Norway and pick it up right at the airport of arrival here

fjords- sea bays formed as a result of tectonic shifts and "cutting" the land area for tens and even hundreds of kilometers (the longest fjord in the world - Scoresby - is located in Greenland and stretches for more than 350 kilometers, followed by its Norwegian "brother" - Sognefjord at 204 kilometers).

The number of fjords in Norway and the Svalbard archipelago is huge and is about 1200. The length of most Norwegian fjords is from 4 to 50 kilometers, but there are also real giants - from a hundred kilometers or more. At the same time, of course, their beauty does not depend on their size, for example, the most famous Geiranger fjord in the world, included in the UNESCO World Heritage List, is only 15 kilometers long. As you can see, it is impossible to physically cover all the fjords, so you have to choose only a few of them.

The most famous and popular fjords of Norway among tourists:

Geirangerfjord, Lysefjord, Hardangerfjord, Trondheimsfjord, Sognefjord, Nærøyfjord, Aurlandsfjord, Nordfjord.

They are concentrated on the west coast of Norway (see map) https://mapsengine.google.com/map/edit?mid=zpmSSUsmrIho.ks9dZ3QlvhcA

City of Trondheim - the third largest city in Norway, located on the shores of the Trondheim fjord. Attractions: Trondheimsfjord (the third longest in the country), the medieval Nidaros Cathedral is a landmark cathedral for Norwegian history, on the site of which the legendary king Olaf II (St. Olaf), the oldest coronation site of Norwegian monarchs, is buried.

City of Kristiansund(Kristiansund) - (not to be confused with Kristiansand, located in the southern part of Norway!) - atlantic road, Mountain road aurshewegen, Trollheimen(home of the trolls) - a mountain range with picturesque valleys.

The Atlantic Road is one of the popular attractions in Norway, it is located between the cities of Kristiansund and Molde. It is an 8 km section of the National Tourist Route 64 that passes through islets in the Atlantic Ocean. In some places, the road is shaped like a wave, and offers postcard views - both in fine weather and during a storm on the Atlantic. There are several viewing platforms where you can park your car, admire the views and take pictures.

City of Molde(Molde) - mountain road Trollstigen(Troll ladder), Romsdal and atlantic road.

From here you can go to the longest fjord in Norway - Sognefjord, its branches - Nærøyfjord and Aurlandsfjord, Hardangerfjord(the second largest in the country), drive along Flåm railway. In the city itself there is an object from the UNESCO World Heritage List - the most beautiful Bryggen promenade, as well as the house-museum of the famous Norwegian composer Edvard Grieg.

When to go to see the fjords?

The best time to travel around Norway to the fjords is from June to mid-August (or, in extreme cases, from May to September), this is due to the country's harsh climate. In the rest of the year, it is better to devote time to exploring only Norwegian cities.
