Proper assembly and installation of interior doors. Instructions for installing interior doors - do the installation yourself! Installation of glass doors

Interior design as part of the interior

Without beautiful and high-quality doors, there is no modern interior. But how to supply the products yourself, without overpaying the workers extra money?

In this article, we will deal with this issue. So, how to properly install interior products? We need a set of tools, skillful hands and a plan of action.

List of required materials and tools:

  • building level;
  • anchor bolts, self-tapping screws for assembling the box;
  • plastic (wooden) wedges and spacers;
  • screwdriver (drill), screwdriver;
  • miter box, chisel;
  • wood saw;
  • polyurethane foam in cylinders (based on one cylinder for two or three doors)

What do we do:

  • We dismantle the old
  • We measure the opening, check the level of the floor
  • Let's cut the loops
  • Let's install
  • Fill voids with foam

We start by removing the unnecessary box. If we are dealing with brick walls, you will need to remove the nails connecting the box and the wooden inserts.

You need to find the heads of the fastening nails on the vertical side (usually 2-3 pieces), file the timber on both sides. Then cut the tip of the nail out of the timber, using a chisel, pull out the elements with tongs.

After removing the nails, it is necessary to cut the vertical beam into two parts and dismantle the old box. If the element to be removed is made of metal, you need to cut off the pins with which it is attached to the reinforcement in the wall. And finally, the box must be dismantled using scrap.

We measure the opening

Correct installation implies accurate measurements (see). Installation is allowed only if there are finished floors.

We measure

Standard opening dimensions:

  • Standard height - 2000 millimeters;
  • Estimated width can vary from 600 to 900 millimeters.

Before placing the box in the opening, you need to estimate the dimensions according to the formula: width + twice the thickness of the beam under the box + 20-30 mm for the gap and adjustment. According to this principle, the required opening height is also calculated.

If the box is larger than the existing opening, you need to reduce the width of the vertical beam. This is much easier than chiseling a concrete wall. When reducing the thickness of the side surface of the box, one should not get carried away too much: 10-15 mm is the maximum that can be cut from the beam.

It is better to remove most of it from the beam where it is planned to place the striker of the lock, because. during operation, this part of the structure will have less load. When installing the box, you need to make a gap (from 10 to 20 mm) with an opening for subsequent filling with sealant.

Checking the floor level

Before placing the products correctly, it is necessary to check the horizontalness of the floor using the building level. According to the level obtained, two points are marked on both sides of the opening.

Then we measure the distance from the indicated points to the floor. Next, the racks need to be cut in height, taking into account the measurement results. However, it must be borne in mind that the difference in level should not exceed three mm.

We complete

Assembly must be carried out on as flat a surface as possible. Since the process of correctly delivering the product is more routine, it is also necessary to mark and insert detachable loops.

Installation rules provide for adjustment.

Assembly

So:

  • Place the door leaf on the floor, lifting it above the floor to a level equal to the width of the beam. In this case, the beam should move easily without excess clearance. When assembling the box, it is necessary to maintain gaps on all sides (3-4 mm). If the gaps in the purchased finished box are smaller, you need to remove the fastening nails.
  • We put two beams on the sides of the canvas maintaining the gap between the timber and the box.
  • Next step: preparing the top bar. We mark the length, cut out a groove for fastening for the side beam, mark the loops (most often at a distance of 200 mm from the edges of the canvas).

Interior doors sooner or later become unusable and have to be replaced. This procedure is not too complicated, so it is not necessary to use the services of hired workers. To cope on their own is quite within the power of someone who has even the slightest idea about the saw, self-tapping screws and the level. In this article, you will learn how to install an interior door with your own hands.

Types of interior doors

The construction market offers a huge number of interior doors that are made from various materials. The most common are: fiberboard, MDF and natural wood. I would like to consider the advantages and disadvantages of doors made of such materials in more detail.

fiberboard doors

The frame of such a door is made of wood, and the sheathing is made of fiberboard sheets.

The advantages include:

  • low price;
  • lightness of the material, which allows you to easily bring the door from the store home;
  • ease of installation.

Such advantages increase the popularity of these doors among the population. Hardware stores have a fairly large selection of fiberboard doors, as they are in the greatest demand.

Of the shortcomings, it should be noted:

  • Fiberboard material is not strong enough, so the doors can quickly become unusable;
  • Poor resistance to moisture, therefore not suitable for installation in bathrooms.

MDF doors

Doors made of MDF material are the most acceptable for the population and meet the price-quality ratio. Compared to fiberboard, such doors have certain advantages, namely:

  • high resistance to moisture;
  • high level of sound insulation;
  • high strength material.

Of the shortcomings, only a higher cost can be noted, compared with fiberboard doors. At the same time, the quality more than justifies the means.

natural wood

Such interior doors have always been and are held in high esteem. The material is durable enough to use. The cost of a door will directly depend on the type of wood from which it is made. The classic interior and the author's design are perfectly complemented with the help of such doors.

Step by step installation instructions

For an example of how to install an interior door in stages, we will take doors from fiberboard.

Step 1

Before starting work, prepare the necessary tools and consumables, such as: a saw, a screwdriver, an electric drill, a tape measure, mounting foam, dowels, a level, wood screws, a pen, drills and drills of the required diameter.

Step 2

Make a diagram for installing the door frame in the opening. It is worth paying special attention to the threshold. If you cannot hide it on the floor, then it is better to choose a box without it, that is, in the shape of the letter P. Such a box does not have a crossbar at the bottom, which will ensure walking without any obstacles.

Step 3

Box installation. Before attaching the door frame, make sure that there are hinges. The door must have a cutout for the handle and for the lock. Gather all the pieces of the box together and fit into the opening. For convenience, fold all the parts on the floor as they will be installed in the opening.

Step 4

Installation of the door frame in the opening. At this stage, the assembled door frame is installed in the opening and leveled.

Step 5

Landing the door on the hinges. This process is quite simple. The doors are hung on the hinges by hand, it is better to ask someone to help you at this moment.

Step 6

Foaming the gap between the wall and the box.

Step 7

Finishing doorways. The type of finishing of such an opening is selected taking into account the type of the door frame itself and the width of the opening.

In order to perform the installation of interior doors without the involvement of hired workers, it is necessary to consider some steps in more detail in order to avoid unpleasant consequences in the future.

Box assembly

The most painstaking and crucial moment in the assembly of an interior door is the installation of a box. But before you install it, you need to assemble it correctly. At this stage, the proverb about measure 7 times is as relevant as possible.

So, to assemble a U-shaped box, you need:

  1. Feigned rack or bar.
  2. Loop bar.
  3. Ceiling plate.

To carry out the assembly as accurately as possible, you need to measure the size of the opening and the canvas itself down to every millimeter. Next, it is worth calculating the dimensions of the racks and lintels, taking into account the dimensions of the gaps. After that, saw off the individual bars and connect them into a single whole. It should be noted that the thickness of the timber should not be less than the thickness of the canvas. When taking measurements, do not change the tape measure, use only one. Having measured the canvas on the right side, measure it on the left as well, do not rely on the accuracy of the match. All deviations will be necessarily taken into account in further work.

Calculation of the installation of an interior door

When taking measurements, consider the following:

  • On the outer sides of the entire beam (ceiling, hinge and feigned), which are in contact with the opening, it is necessary to leave a gap of 1 cm wide for mounting foam.
  • There should also be a gap on the inside of the entire beam, but a little less, 0.3 cm. If the box has a threshold, then such a gap is necessary around the entire perimeter.
  • The lower plane of the door frame and the floor must have a gap between them. On average, its height should be 1 cm. For linoleum, 0.8 cm is enough, and for fleecy coatings, 1.5 cm.

If the opening is not enough in size, it should be increased and vice versa, reduced if it is too large.

Insert hinges

Usually, two hinges are enough for interior doors, but sometimes three may be needed. The hinges are installed at a distance of 250 mm from the edge of the canvas. If both the canvas and the box are made of wood, then the place for the loops must be chosen so that there are no knots. Initially, the loops are attached only to the canvas.

The stitching order looks like this:

  1. We select the places necessary for the loops and outline them with a knife blade.
  2. You can work with a milling cutter or a chisel, in which case the material must be matched to the thickness of the loop.
  3. We prepare the recess and install a loop in it, the plane of which should be flush with the canvas.
  4. The loop that is already inserted into the hole must be fixed with self-tapping screws.

When you have installed the hinges in the door leaf, it is placed in the door frame and the necessary gaps are set.

On the side of the hinges, the gaps should be 5 mm, on the opposite side and at the top 3 mm.

When the gaps are set, they are fixed with wedges. It is also necessary to set the canvas itself, exactly horizontally and vertically.

When everything is exposed, the location of the mating parts should be noted. Sometimes it is more convenient to remove the installed loop and then reinstall it. According to the markup, you need to make a recess. The depth should be such that the surface of the door frame coincides with the hinge.

Hardware installation

Installation of interroom doors cannot do without installation of accessories. According to all safety regulations, interior doors should always open outward. The installation of handles, as well as loops, begins with markings, which should be carried out very carefully. First, mark the level of its height. Usually it is 90 cm. On one side, draw a line with a pencil, stepping back from the edge of 60 mm. Using a ruler, draw a line on the end and make a similar marking on the other side of the door. All marks must be pierced with an awl.

Drill a hole half the thickness of the canvas. Do the same on the other side of the door. At the end of the canvas you need to make a hole with a pen drill. Make sure that all measurements match and do not allow deviations even of 1 mm. Take a chisel and with light taps make a deep cut for the latch. Screw it on with screws. Now it remains only to insert 2 parts of the product. Bring the parts on both sides and try to get into the holes with the guides, then tighten everything with bolts.

At the end, you have to install a metal plate on the end of the door frame. Cut out the cutouts for the plate. Make sure the frame fits snugly against the end and secure the frame with screws.

Box installation

How to install the box correctly? This process requires you to be extremely careful and patient. It is better if someone helps you, then the measurements and installation will be much more accurate.

Installing the door frame in the opening includes the following:

  • The pre-assembled door must be carefully lifted, preferably with an assistant, and installed in the opening.
  • In order to leave the necessary gaps between the wall and the box, you need to make wedges from the remnants of the material.
  • Next, screw in the screws.
  • We clearly align the base in all directions. There should not be any distortions and discrepancies in the gaps. But if there are any, they can be leveled by loosening or tightening the screws more tightly.
  • We hang the door leaf on the hinges and check.
  • Where the mounting foam will be poured along the box, we seal the canvas with construction tape. Insert cardboard into the gap and close the door.

As you can see, the process is not that complicated, however, it requires precise measurements and compliance in all sizes.

Foaming

This step is quite important. Filling the gaps between the box and the wall with foam should be carried out after the door is installed. Do not forget that as it dries, the mounting foam increases in volume. If you suddenly overdid it with its quantity, it may well pull out the screws and even bend the box, after which you will not be able to close the door. If this happens, then the installation of the door will need to be started again. During foaming, it is important to lay gaps between the wall and the box with something.

Applying construction foam for gaps is not hard work. The vertical seam must be filled from below. Be extremely careful with the amount of foam used.

Only a third of the opening needs to be filled. In addition to the deformation of the door, the foam can come out and spoil the appearance of the leaf.

Drying of the foam occurs in a day at a temperature of 20 degrees.

Finishing openings

When the door installation is completed, the openings require finishing to bring the overall appearance of the space in order. The type of finish should be selected based on the width of the opening and the door frame.

With a thin wall, when its width is equal to the width of the door frame, platbands can be used for finishing. This is usually how bathroom doors are designed. This option is the simplest and most common. A set of platbands is attached to all sides of the box and closes the building foam. If the platbands are made of wood, then first they need to be attached with screws and only then painted. If the platbands are laminated, then they must be fixed with nails without caps or with screws with caps.

If the doorways are wide, then you can finish them using the same platbands or an additional strip, which can be cut to the width you need. Such a bar is attached to the wall using building silicone. The plank and platbands can have a different color with the door. Recently, it is quite important to choose contrasting solutions.

If the door frame is made of wood, then it can be finished with slope plaster. Cement-sand plaster will perfectly emphasize the natural texture of your doors. But this method is not entirely suitable for finishing fiberboard boxes. This is due to their incompatibility with high humidity, which involves plaster work.

Thus, we can say that installing interior doors with your own hands will not take you as much time as it would seem at first glance. Detailed step-by-step instructions will help you avoid the most common installation errors. Correctly performed measurements will guarantee a successful installation of the door. In addition to your own efforts, do not forget to choose high-quality materials for the work being carried out so that your efforts do not become a waste of time due to an unsuccessful choice of building foam or self-tapping screws.

Have you bought a new home, or is it time to renovate your old one? Restoration, replacement or installation of a new interior door is indispensable. Today we are not talking about restoration.

Let's talk about installing a new door. You can entrust such work to specialists, but we ourselves are with hands. Installing an interior door with your own hands will save the budget, give pleasure if you are a real man.

The construction market is full of offers. Interior doors are no exception. Choose whatever you like, affordable for your pocket. But don't rush to buy. It is necessary to take into account the peculiarities of the location of rooms in a house or apartment, the size of the doorway, the specifics of opening doors. Interior doors are:

  • hinged one-door or two-door;
  • sliding compartments (built into the wall or over the wall);
  • harmonic;
  • secret.

Each has distinctive features, requires an individual approach to installation, fittings. Handles can be installed on the surface of the leaf or recessed inside; swivel or push.

Hinges for different types of interior doors. Most often they consist of two parts: one is attached to the canvas, the other to the vertical rack of the box.

Hinged two-door design of a door.

For compartment interior doors, a system of upper / lower guides is provided. Knowing the features of installing different types of doors, doing everything yourself is not difficult. And now about everything in order.

Determine the size of the future door structure

We take a single-leaf swing door as a basis. Having understood the calculations of the overall dimensions of this design, it will not be difficult to deal with other options.

  1. We measure the interior opening in height and width. We take the size of a clean space without an old door, if any. There should be no inaccuracies in the calculations - this will affect the quality of installing interior doors with your own hands.
  2. If there is an old structure, we dismantle it, level the surface.
  3. The width of standard interior doors varies from 700 mm. They may be smaller, but this is only for some utility rooms. Because it will be difficult to pass through such an opening, and even more so to bring in dimensional objects.
  4. For a door with a width of 700 mm, the opening must be at least 790 mm. It is necessary to take into account the thickness of the frame, the door leaf and the technological gap for comfortable opening of the sash. Usually, 30 mm are left for a gap on the right and left sides inside the box.
  5. Let's move on to height. The standard door leaf corresponds to a height of 2000 mm. Larger sizes are made to order. We add to the height of the door leaf the thickness of the upper bar of the box, the gaps for opening.
  6. The design can be with or without a threshold. This must be taken into account when buying a door. On average, the height of interior openings is 2100 mm. If the dimensions of the space are slightly larger than the standard, do not worry. During the installation process, the remaining space will be hidden by foam, cashing around the perimeter.

Standard door and frame dimensions.

All details are bought, prepared. We turn to the installation of an interior door with our own hands.

Do-it-yourself door leaf and box preparation

Each master has his own methods for installing interior doors. You can mount the box and the canvas separately in the opening, you can assemble it into a single set and install it in the opening. The main thing is that the result is positive. Step-by-step instructions will help you avoid mistakes.

Do-it-yourself box assembly

Consider the technology when the box is assembled on the floor, then installed in the opening.

Initially, it is important to properly install the door frame.

Knowing the size of the product, we cut off the desired length of the vertical slats. To do this, take a tape measure, make a measurement, mark a mark with a pencil, saw off the excess length.

There are two ways to cut a beam:

  • at an angle of 45 degrees;
  • at an angle of 90 degrees.

The assembly of the first option is not available to every craftsman. You need clarity of action, a firm hand and a miter saw. At an angle of 45, we cut out not only vertical strips, but also horizontal ones. We connect the elements with self-tapping screws, twisting them deeper.

The second option is no problem. We saw off the desired length, connect the parts at an angle of 90 degrees. We make a small notch on the top of the vertical bar for the upper vertical part of the box, a kind of groove. It will help to more tightly connect the parts from the timber with self-tapping screws.

Before tightening the fasteners, make holes with a drill to avoid cracking the slats and damaging the workpiece.

The step-by-step video instruction in this article will help you understand the technique of collecting the box with your own hands.

We considered the option when the assembly of the interior box comes from special blanks for the door structure. They are recommended when an additional rigid frame is needed in the opening. For example, in a wooden house, a box made of timber will play the role of a pigtail, will not allow you to lead a doorway when shrinking a log house, to break the geometry of the door. The thickness and width of the timber is selected according to the type of door: solid, MDF, panel or otherwise. Everyone has their own thickness. Choose your favorite option for collecting the support frame and proceed to the collection of the canvas.

Assembling the canvas with your own hands, installing accessories

Assembling the canvas involves fixing the necessary fasteners to the door leaf. Sometimes manufacturers make notches at the intended attachment points for hinges or handles. These are more exclusive and expensive models.

All fittings to the door leaf must be installed before the door canopy into the frame.

Often the sash of the interior design is universal, i.e. the product can be installed in the interior opening both on the right and on the left. Our instruction hint will help to understand this issue.

Tip: for fire safety, any door should open outward, in the direction of travel. Neither the handle nor the canvas should touch other objects so that there is no rebound from the blow back. It can be traumatic.

Try to ensure that adjacent doors do not interfere with each other when opening. Sometimes the corridor space is narrow, but separates several rooms that need to be isolated with interior doors. If you choose the wrong opening option, then there will be a problem of hitting one door against another, or one of the doors may block the other. Architects do not always think through this moment, especially in small apartments. Therefore, provide for all the nuances so that the use of a useful piece of furniture is not deplorable. A sliding door would be a good option.

Do-it-yourself loop installation

We figured out the direction of opening. Let's move on to installing the hinges of interior doors with your own hands.

We will mark the canvas and the vertical bar of the supporting frame. According to the standard, two loops are fixed. If the door is heavy, such as an array, a third hinge will be required.

The hinges are attached to the door exactly according to the given scheme, observing the dimensions.

From above and below we retreat from the edge of 150-200 mm, we make the first notch. This is one edge of the loop bar. We outline the second mark - this is the other edge of the bar. We find out the size by measuring the length of the loop with a tape measure or applying the loop itself to the first mark. We do the same actions on the vertical rack of the box.

Modern hinges may be tightly adjacent to the ends of the product or require additional penetration into the edge. To do this, we take a chisel, select the required gap from the canvas and timber. Thus, there were seats for the upper and lower loops.

We fix the fittings with self-tapping screws, having previously drilled holes for them with a drill.

Some experts recommend attaching the hinge to the canvas and box prior to installation. Other masters advise to put the box, and then screw the canvas together with the hinges in a standing position. What to choose is up to you. It is easier to immediately fix the hinges on the box and the sash in the supine position, and then install it in the opening. But it may be difficult to adjust if the adjoining door is not symmetrical around the perimeter of the opening.

Installing and assembling the handle

Let's move on to the handles. Step-by-step instructions for installing handles will help you do everything right. Despite the fact that door handles are represented by a wide range, their installation is carried out according to a certain algorithm. Latch handles are often used, which contain a locking element in the design that allows you to close the door with a key or latch:

  • we measure the height where we fix the handle and the lock, according to the standard 90–120 mm from the floor;
  • at the end of the canvas, a hole for the lock plate is drilled with a large drill;
  • insert the bar into the hole, outline its contours at the end of the canvas;
  • we take out the lock and make a recess with a chisel so that the lock bar is flush with the surface;
  • on the surface of the product we mark the place where the handle is attached, applying the locking bar from the outside;
  • drill a hole for the handle;
  • we insert the lock back into the end and fix it with a handle;
  • We install the reciprocal bar on the box after hanging the door in the opening.

To figure out how to fix the handles on the door with your own hands, you can watch the video instruction:

Installing a door in an interior opening

We proceed to the next stage - installation of the product in the interior opening. Let's make a small digression. If the door is installed in a new apartment, then it is enough to check the evenness of the opening and correct the irregularities with the help of plaster and a trowel. Sand the surface, prime and proceed with the installation of the door structure. But if the repair is carried out in an old room, then it is necessary to dismantle the old door or interior box. It takes time, effort and skill.

The entire space around the box is foamed with mounting foam.

Make dismantling in advance, so as not to spray, not to increase the installation time of the door. We do it with our own hands and for the first time. Finishing work of walls, floors must be completed before the installation of doors, so that later there are no incidents of inconsistency. This requirement applies both to the installation of a U-shaped box, and around the entire perimeter with a threshold. It is difficult to drive linoleum or tile under the door and maintain the possibility of proper opening.

Correct installation of the door with your own hands requires the presence of an assistant. There are two options for mounting in the opening, but in each of them it is difficult for one to do all the manipulations.

First way. Installing the box separately from the canvas

After checking the evenness of the frame with a level, we install it in the prepared interior opening. Accompanying each action with a level and a plumb line, we set the frame evenly. It should not have even the slightest bias. This will affect the opening of the sash.

Installing the door frame separately from the canvas.

We install wedges or bars to pre-fix the box. Do not forget about the gap between the jamb and the slats.

We drill holes in the vertical bar, twist the screws into the holes. They have to pull the box to the jamb. If the house is wooden, a long self-tapping screw will easily go into the log. If the house is made of bricks, it is required to make a preliminary hole in the opening and insert a plastic dowel under the self-tapping screw. Fasteners must be recessed into the bar so as not to interfere with the opening / closing of the sash.

Check the level of all surfaces.

There are situations when the box cannot completely close the jamb. Help to hide the opening decorative dobor. They are attached directly to the jamb or attached to the box before installation. Choose the correct size of the extensions or cut them in place. Fix such extensions in the groove with foam.

The box is fixed. Let's move on to hanging the canvas. If the hinges are collapsible, then hanging the sash is not very difficult. The hinges are installed symmetrically on both parts of the product. We put one part of the loop into another and check all the gaps. They should be the same around the perimeter.

The second way. Installing the complete product

Before installing the kit in the interior opening, we lay out cardboard gaskets between the canvas and the box. This will keep the gaps and symmetry of the kit.

  • Carefully lift the product, install it in the opening.
  • Align around the perimeter with a level and a plumb line.
  • We install wedges or bars around the perimeter to maintain gaps and space for foam.
  • We turn to foaming the space around the perimeter. This process is similar in both the first and second installation methods.
  • Before applying the foam in the gaps, cover the front sides of the box with masking tape to avoid foam getting on the product. It is quite difficult to clean it up. Use a foam gun. The gun will reduce material consumption and the work will be done neatly. Take your time. Apply layer after layer from top to bottom.

After foaming the space, it is advisable to leave the door closed for a day. At rest, deformations will not occur, and the cardboard laid between the box and the canvas will retain gaps and will not allow the beam to bend when the foam expands.

The door leaf can be installed separately from the frame or together.

After drying, cut off the excess mounting foam, remove the masking tape.

It remains to fix the striker of the lock on the end of the box and install decorative details - platbands.

do-it-yourself interior door installation - the final process

With the door closed, we apply a notch to the attachment point of the lock striker. We select a hole for the bar with a chisel. It should be recessed into the timber flush. Fasten with screws. We check the operation of the lock and handle.

Finishing works are finishing.

The final step is to install trim on the sides and top of the interior door. The platbands can be connected to each other at an angle of 45 degrees or at a right angle. It depends on the product design. Sometimes parts are sold in finished size or need to be sawed off. Carry out washing down with a zasovochny saw. The elements are connected in place, fixed with liquid nails or nails without hats, hammering into the drilled holes.

How to install yourself

For a specialist, installing an interior door is not a problem. But if you are doing repairs yourself, you may have a question: how to install the doors yourself so that they reliably perform all their functions. This article will help you understand this issue. Immediately, we note that we will talk about wooden doors from the array.

The door installation technology differs only in that before selecting the recesses for the hinges, it is necessary to cut and remove the veneer layer with a sharp knife so as not to damage the coating. As for expensive interior doors, in the absence of installation skills, it is better to entrust this work to specialists. So, let's consider in detail: how to install it yourself.

A wooden box and platbands usually come with the door leaf. If you bought only the canvas, you will need to separately purchase the door frame (see), additional elements, trim, and self-tapping screws for assembly.

In addition, you will need the following materials and tools:

  • Anchor bolts for attaching the box to the opening.
  • Wooden or plastic wedges.
  • Mounting foam.
  • Building level.
  • Drill or screwdriver.
  • Wood saw, miter box and chisel.

Before starting work, carefully read the instructions on how to install an interior door yourself + watch a video that will help you better understand the details.

Installation steps

Determine the dimensions of the openings

Having decided which doors you want to install in your home, take care to fit openings in load-bearing walls and partitions for them. Or, if expansion into a load-bearing wall is not possible, adjust your plans.

Having information about what kind of doors you will have - dimensions with a box - when building plasterboard partitions, builders will be able to immediately build the necessary openings by installing metal profiles at a certain distance. It will not be difficult to comply with the specified dimensions when building walls made of bricks, concrete blocks and other materials.

It is more difficult to bring existing ones into line with the necessary parameters. But if this is not done, there is a high probability that the door with the box will not enter the opening. And repairs after installation will have to be redone, eliminating large gaps between the box and the wall, re-gluing the wallpaper or painting the walls.

What do you need to know to calculate openings?

Need to know:

For reference:

Thresholds are usually installed on front doors to prevent heat from escaping. But it is advisable to use them for doors to bathrooms to protect living rooms from accidental leaks.

Knowing all these data, it will not be difficult to calculate the parameters of the opening. For example, consider the following standard ones: box size - 25 mm thick and 40 mm wide; canvas size 800x2000 mm.

Adding to the width twice the thickness of the box and the dimensions of the mounting gap, which is usually 15 mm on each side, you get the width of the opening: 800 + 2x15 + 2x25 = 880 mm. If the platbands are wide enough, then this size may be slightly larger - the gap between the wall and the box will be blocked by the platband.

Attention! Be sure to install gaps of 5-10 mm in the lower part to ensure air exchange. If the house is supplied with liquefied gas, then for kitchen doors the gap is increased to 15-20 mm to ensure ventilation.

So, the height of the opening into which the door we have chosen with a frame without a threshold (see) will be installed is calculated as follows: 2000 + 25 +15 + 10 = 2050 mm.

It is desirable to add to the data obtained the amount of gap that must be left between the door leaf and the frame, but since it is only a few millimeters, it can not be taken into account in rough calculations.

A few words about why we need box width data. The fact is that installation is possible only in an opening of the appropriate thickness. If it is less than the width of the box, then the latter will have to be sawn along so that it does not protrude beyond the plane of the wall.

And this inevitably leads to a deterioration in quality and appearance. In addition, not all boxes can be subjected to such a rough adjustment. If the thickness of the opening exceeds the width of the box, you will need to take care of purchasing extensions.

Installing the door frame

If the main repair work has come to an end, the doors have been bought (the dimensions with the box correspond to the openings), and there is no extra money left or you just don’t want to wait for the master, then you can install the box yourself (see). After that, hanging them will not be difficult.

The assembly of the door frame is carried out as follows:

  1. Lay the vertical bars of the box on a flat, clean floor with the battens up and insert the door leaf into them. Insert pieces of packing cardboard or strips of hardboard between the ends of the canvas and the porch to provide a gap. Align the top ends of the bars with the top of the canvas.
  2. Attach the upper crossbar to the ends of the vertical bars, align it with one of the racks and mark the length of the element with a pencil along the edge of the second rack. Then saw off the excess with a hacksaw or jigsaw.
  3. Attach the crossbar to the uprights again and make marks on the inside of the front part. On the porch of the crossbar, make cuts according to the marks, using a hacksaw for metal, so that the cut is even and neat. Chip off excess wood and clean this place with a chisel.
  4. With a thin drill, drill holes in the crossbar and screw it to the uprights with self-tapping screws.

Assembling the door frame yourself

Attention! The described sequence of work is applicable only for doors, the porches of the boxes of which have a rectangular section. To assemble a box with a complex curly section, the racks and the crossbar must be cut at an angle of 45 degrees.

  1. Saw off the racks of the box in height, taking into account the gap between the floor and the bottom of the canvas. At the same time, please note that the box should not stand on the floor, it is fixed at a height of 1-2 mm from the clean floor in order to provide it with moisture and thermal expansion.
  2. Install the box in the opening, fixing it with wedges, and align the posts and the crossbar with a level in two planes. To make sure the installation is correct, measure the diagonals - they should be equal.
  3. After the control fitting of the door leaf, fix the frame in the opening with anchor bolts.

Using expansion wedges

Door leaf installation

A lot of instructions have been written about how to install interior doors yourself, but there are nuances in this matter that come with experience.

  1. At a distance of 20-25 cm from the upper and lower edges, make markings for the hinges (see) on the box and the end of the door leaf, accurately matching all dimensions and not forgetting about the technological gaps.

  1. With a milling machine or a chisel, make recesses for the hinges. The plane on which the hinges are attached must be perfectly flat.
  2. Disassemble the hinges and screw their lower parts (with a sleeve) to the frame, and the upper parts (with a leg) to the door.
  3. Lubricate the hinge feet with graphite grease or machine oil and hang the door leaf. Check for correct installation.
  4. Before you fill the gap between the frame and the opening with foam, put additional spacers just above the door handle and next to the hinges. Apply the foam in a thin layer, having previously covered the door with a film and moistened the opening with water from a spray bottle.
  5. After the foam has completely dried, cut off its excess and the protruding parts of the wedges.

The main stages of installation

The classic product installation technology includes several main stages, regardless of the chosen type of interior door:

  1. Installation of the box (installation in the opening).
  2. Installing the door leaf.
  3. Installation of additional elements.

The correct installation of interior doors with your own hands is carried out using power tools - a drill, a screwdriver, a puncher.

If you need to cut trim along, it is recommended to prepare a parquet-type circular saw. In addition, a wire saw or a hacksaw, a building level, a hammer, a pencil, a tape measure, a nail puller, a spray bottle with water, a mallet, a miter box, chisels and consumables are useful for installation:

  • self-tapping screws, dowels;
  • masking tape;
  • mounting foam;
  • wooden spacers and wedges.

Advice! Experienced craftsmen use a plumb line when installing the door and prefer a wooden mallet, as the rubber one leaves marks. To fix the box in the opening, it is better to use dowels, and for hinges - yellow-passed or galvanized self-tapping screws. Standard "regular" self-tapping screws, which are supplied with the product, are not recommended for installation.

Wedges for fixing the product are best made during the installation process from bars and boards. Pre-preparation of wedges of several sizes can be a waste of time, since the exact parameters of the products are determined “on a case-by-case basis” - during installation.

Step 1 Assemble the box

First, you have to assemble interior doors with your own hands - connect the parts with self-tapping screws. Before starting the assembly, it is recommended to trim the gaps taking into account the flooring. For residential premises, it is recommended to observe gaps of 10 mm.

Assembly order:

  1. Saw down the ceiling beam under the hinged: attach two beams, mark the line, make a cut and carefully chop off the end with a chisel.
  2. Connect the beams(hinged, lintel) in a right angle using self-tapping screws.
  3. Cut the hinges into the hinge bar.
  4. Connect three beams, put on the door and adjust the ceiling element.

Advice! When fixing the box, experienced craftsmen use pieces of cardboard or orgolite of the same thickness as gaskets. Thanks to this trick, optimal gaps of 3–4 mm are provided between the edge of the door and the frame (beams). The main thing when using this method is to control when screwing the screws so that the wedges do not “dangle” in the box.

The most important area of work at this stage is fitting fittings, on the quality of which the convenience of further operation of the door depends. Goats are a useful invention to help "homemade" - a device made of cardboard and pieces of wood that will hold the door in place.

Executed sequentially:

Useful advice: the chisel must be held at an angle of 45 across the recess and hit the tool with sharp blows. After the desired depth is formed, it is recommended to install the chisel on a vertical line and trim the edges - cut the canvas from the marks from top to bottom and clean out the recesses.

  • Hang the door: first place the hinge in the upper slot, mark the hole for the screws and fix the hinges (see ). After that, it is necessary to install the canvas in the box, knock it out with wedges and mark the jamb. The last stage of work is fastening the hinge sash with screws;
  • Marking the lock, spindle and keyhole on the end of the door. The marking height can be varied at your discretion, the main thing is to correctly apply the dimensions of the lock to the front sides and mark the position of the well;
  • Drill holes for the well and spindle, lock socket, clean it and align the edges;
  • Fastening of the lock with screws, installation of linings for handles and fastening.

The last stage of work on the tie-in of the lock is the fastening of the receiving lining:

  1. Close the door;
  2. Mark the position of the tongue on the joint;
  3. Hang the overlay and measure the distance to the front side;
  4. The markup must be transferred to the jamb, attach the overlay and circle with a pencil.

The last stage of work is to make a recess and screw the part to the jamb. Slots for the latch and tongue are made with a chisel, after which the stoppers can be fixed.

Step 2 Mounting the box

Fix the upper part of the box with wedges, setting the wooden products at the level of the junction of the standing and transverse parts. To fix the lower part, it is necessary to align the hinge side and check the correct installation in two planes (vertically, horizontally) using a level.

Then fix the opposite side of the box and firmly install the spacer opposite the lower wedges.

Step 3. Installing the canvas

At this stage, you have to install interior doors with your own hands: hang the canvas and check the performance. The door must close smoothly, without spontaneous closing / opening in the ajar position.

The last stage is the application of mounting foam into the space of the box with an opening.

Note! Foam can damage the varnish of the door leaf, therefore, before applying the composition, it is recommended to glue the box with tape. In addition, when drying, the foam increases several times in volume, which must be taken into account when installing the canvas, strictly observing the recommended gaps.

At this stage, every millimeter is important, since if the opening is reduced by less than 2 mm, for example, to 1.5 mm, the door will not close, and if it is in a larger direction, a gap and part of the interior of the neighboring room will be visible. Since the foam, depending on the type chosen, can “behave” differently, it is recommended to reduce the risk of side effects - significant squeezing of the box planks.

To do this, experienced craftsmen apply the polyurethane composition as thinly as possible. The time for complete drying of the foam is indicated on the bottle, after which you can carefully remove the wedges or cut off the woodwork, remove the spacers and cut off the protruding foam with a knife.

Step 4. Installation of additional elements

Additional elements must be prepared: measure the distance to the wall, taking into account the groove and cut the bar using a jigsaw or hacksaw.

After that, you need to insert the bar into the groove and foam at several points. It is more difficult to install an interior door with your own hands if the standard width of the plank does not allow you to block the width of the opening. In this case, you have to connect several additional elements.

Step 5. Platband installation

The last stage of installation consists in the beautiful design of the opening on the sides and top with decorative elements - platbands (see). After the do-it-yourself installation of interior doors is completed and the foam is completely dry, having firmly fixed the additional elements, you can begin to prepare the casing:

  • Determine the desired length;
  • Sawing the part at an angle of 45 using a miter saw;
  • Drill holes with a diameter of 1.5 mm for nails;
  • Fasten the part to the finishing nails.

If you have to install interior doors with your own hands with a platband with a "beak", then the installation process is simpler: you do not need to file the part, just remove the part of the "beak" at the top, insert the product into the groove and fix it on liquid nails. Upon completion of the installation is carried out - and the interior door is ready for operation.

The final stage of door installation

To make the doors look aesthetically pleasing, you need to do something else. If the thickness of the opening into which the interior door is installed turned out to be wider than the box, then it will have to

To do this, a quarter of 10x10 mm is selected in the box with the help of a cutter for attaching an additional board to it. Finally, the door needs to be framed with platbands.

Measure their length, cut the corners with a miter box at 45 degrees and nail the architraves to the box with finishing studs. Or glue them to the wall with "liquid nails".

Sooner or later, it's time to make changes to the interior, it may be necessary to replace the doors if they are categorically not suitable for the chosen new style. And then the question arises of how to install an interior door on your own in order to save a round sum on the call of the master. To hold this event is quite accessible to anyone who knows how to work with construction tools, has carpentry skills and knows the step-by-step instructions for the work.

Not a single residential building can do without. If the wooden box in which the old door is installed is in good condition, then only the door leaf and facing panels (platbands) can be changed. This process is much easier to perform than completely changing the door frame along with the canvas. However, even such a large-scale alteration, with the replacement of the box, is quite feasible.

Tools for the job

For any carpentry work, you must have the following tools at hand:

  • Planer for leveling end surfaces. You may need both manual, for small delicate work, and electric - if the fit is voluminous enough.
  • Joiner's square - the longer, the more accurate the marking will be.
  • Building level, plumb.
  • Screwdriver with a set of nozzles (bit).
  • An elongated screwdriver - you may need both a straight blade and a curly one, so it's better to have a set.
  • One type of saw is a hand saw or an electric circular saw.
  • Roulette, pencil.
  • Miter box for the correct cutting of corners when fitting wooden parts.

Miter box with a hacksaw - necessary for precise fitting of wooden parts
  • Construction knife.
  • A hammer.
  • Chisel, chisel for removing layers of wood when making grooves for hinges and a lock.

  • Hole saw for cutting large diameter round holes.

"Crowns" or hole saws - for cutting even holes of large diameter
  • Electric drill.

In addition to tools, you will need auxiliary materials and consumables:

  • Wooden wedges for door frame spacers.
  • Stain and varnish, primer and paint.
  • Self-tapping screws, dowels and anchor fasteners.
  • Mounting foam.

door drawing

It is recommended to draw up a drawing before starting work, on which it is necessary to accurately put down all the dimensions taken from the opening, door frame and door leaf. Such a scheme will help to quickly complete the work, without being distracted by the measurement of each detail during the installation process.

To get an accurate picture, it is necessary to measure the height and width of the installed old door, and the thickness of interior doors is usually standard and is 40 mm. Modern doors are sometimes somewhat different from older models, in which case it will be necessary to adjust the door leaf or completely change the door block.

Whatever decision is made - to replace the entire unit or just the door leaf, you still need to start by removing the old door from the hinges.

Replacing only the door leaf

Removing the door leaf

The hinges installed on the interior door can have different designs, which means that the door can be removed in different ways. However, all methods are not difficult.

As you know, door hinges consist of two parts, one of which is attached to the door, and the second - to the door jamb. In some models, the axle rod is permanently fixed inside the element, which is mounted on the vertical post of the jamb, and in the other part, installed on the door leaf, there is a hole where the rod should enter. When removing a door hung on such hinges, you need to place a mount under its lower edge and apply a little force to lift the canvas. It is best if there is a second worker who will support the door in an upright position, and then help remove it completely.

Another type of canopy, in which the axial rod is inserted from above and passes through both parts of the hinge. In order to dismantle a door hung on such hinges, it is enough to pull out the rods installed in them, which have a kind of mushroom-shaped hat on top. A reliable wide screwdriver is substituted under it, and, tapping on its handle, pull the pin out of the loop. You need to start the process from the bottom hinge in order to avoid tipping the door, which, with its weight, can easily tear out part of the hinge installed on the jamb, damaging its surface. This is especially undesirable if the door frame is in good condition and will be used for a new door.

After dismantling the door from the opening, it is necessary to remove the hinges, handles, locks from it.

Fitting a new door

Provided that only the door leaf is replaced, the new door will have to be adjusted to the existing opening, based on the dimensions of the old one. From it you need to remove the exact dimensions and transfer them to a new canvas.

You can do it differently - the new door is laid on a flat surface, and the old dismantled canvas is placed on top of it. Canvases are aligned on top and along the vertical edge of the door on the side where the handle will be installed. If the new canvas is larger than the old one, it will need to be adjusted. With the help of a pencil, lines are drawn on it, along which an extra fragment is sawn off from the new canvas.

It must be remembered that a gap is left for the interior door, between the canvas and the jamb on all its sides, 5 mm each, and from below you can leave a slightly larger distance - 10 ÷ 12 mm.

Further, the excess part is cut off from the new canvas. The cut must be perfectly even and smooth, and this can only be done with a sharp and accurate tool, which can be a hand-held circular saw. The cut is made under a special ruler, which is designed for use with just such a cutting tool.

The saw is set to the desired notch height (usually with an output of 45 mm) and the door is sawn off exactly according to the markup. If there is no special guide ruler, then you can carefully cut with a circular and without it, leaving an allowance of about 1 ÷ 2 mm - this will be necessary in order to then cleanly fit the canvas with an electric planer.

Hinge installation

When it is adjusted to size, you need to mark the places where the loops will be attached. To carry out this process accurately, you need to put the old door on the new canvas and very accurately align them with each other. At the end of the new door, marks are made of the areas where the hinges will be installed, focusing on the old canvas.

In this case, the layout of the loops is first marked with a pencil, and then with a construction knife. The lines from the knife are clear, and it will be easy to make a selection from them when cutting out the recesses necessary for installing the loops.

Next, the door leaf is placed on the end, so that the side on which the hinge will be inserted is on top. With the help of a chisel (chisel) outline the depth of the future groove. The tool is installed on the lines marked with a knife, and it is hit with a hammer from above, observing how deep the cutting edge goes into the wood - it should go deep by 2 ÷ 4 mm, depending on the thickness of the metal of the loops (this can be measured in advance with a ruler or caliper) .

It is recommended to divide the area planned for sampling into several fragments, for the convenience of extracting wood. Further, the chisel is installed at a slight angle to the end of the door, with the beveled part down. and, striking it with a hammer, an extra layer of wood is knocked out, forming the necessary recess.

The next step, in the prepared recesses, you need to install the loops. They must be installed so that the plane of the metal plate is flush with the surface of the end face of the door. If the metal of the loop rises above the surface, then the notch needs to be deepened a little. If by chance the recess turned out to be somewhat larger than necessary, then a piece of thick cardboard can be placed under the loop.

When it is achieved that the loop entered the recess intended for it, as if “poured”, right through its holes with a thin drill drill sockets into which it will be convenient to screw screws. Further, the hinges are tightly screwed to the door, and then the canvas is tried on in the opening of the door frame. This fitting will show the presence of gaps and their size, as well as how accurately, without distortions, the canvas fits into the doorway.

If you have a manual milling cutter at your disposal, then very carefully the grooves for the hinges (and for the lock) can be selected with it.

Installing a lock or door latch

  • When the hinges fit well, you can proceed to the device holes for and handles.
  • Location The castle is also marked by an old door. It is very important to measure the exact distance from the edge of the door to drill the hole. If it is not executed exactly, and because of this it will have to be transferred, then the appearance of the door may be hopelessly damaged.
  • If a new lock is installed, then its kit often includes a special stencil through which the size and exact relative position of all holes are transferred, but measurements are still necessary for control.
  • If an old lock is used for a new door, then all parameters can be taken from the old canvas.
  • On the end side of the door, where the latch will come out, a hole is drilled with a chisel drill ("feather"), and on the main plane of the door this is usually done with a hole saw of the appropriate diameter.

  • After drilling the holes, the door leaf, if necessary, is decorated in the chosen way - it can be stained or stained with subsequent varnishing.
  • When the paint (lacquer) dries, and the place for installing the lock elements is ready, first installed and the internal mechanism with a latch is screwed on, and then the handles are mounted and fixed.

Video: an example of inserting a lock into an interior door

Installing the door in place

To make it easier to put it in place, it must be raised from the floor to the desired height and a board (or several planks) of the appropriate thickness should be placed under it.

  • Then, the loops must be carefully aligned with each other and carefully thread the lubricated rods into them, first into the upper loop, then into the lower one. The rods can, if necessary, be lightly tapped from above with a hammer
  • If a different type of hinge is used, then the door suspension will be carried out a little differently. It is best to do this together, since at the same time you need to get the rods of that part of the hinges that are installed on the box into the holes located on the "reciprocal" halves screwed to the door leaf.

Find out how to do it with step by step instructions in our new article.

Complete replacement of the door - together with the door frame

If during the overhaul of the apartment it turned out that it was necessary to replace not only the door, but also the door frame, then you need to start dismantling the old door set. This task can be even less difficult than replacing only the door leaf, since the new door purchased is usually already perfectly fitted to its frame.

How do you install a door from scratch?

There are certain standards according to which interior doors are produced, single or double. True, no one canceled the possibility of individual ordering doors for openings of a different size or shape.

Dismantling the old door and frame

Dismantling the old kit is as follows:

  • As in the first case, the door leaf is removed from the hinges.
  • Further, the platbands are removed as carefully as possible.
  • The box is removed last. To make it easier to remove the bars of the box, a through cut is made approximately in the middle of one of the sides. In this case, the design of the box loses tension, given dimensions, deforms, and it can be easily dismantled in parts.
  • Provided that the box must be kept in its entirety, with the help of a chisel and a hammer, the installed wedges are knocked out of the gaps between the wall and the jamb. This also reduces the expansion stress. If the jamb bars are fixed to the wall with nails (anchors, etc.), then you should try to carefully pull them out, and if that doesn’t work, cut them with a hacksaw blade or in another way, thereby freeing the box.
  • The box is carefully loosened with a pry bar and removed from the opening.
  • After dismantling the box, the opening must be cleaned of the old mounting foam, if it is present there, of dust and dirt accumulated during the operation of the door.

Production and installation of the box

When starting to assemble the box, you first need to install hinges on one of its sides, this process is carried out simultaneously with their installation on the door leaf. The hinges are attached in the same way as in the first case, which was described above. After that, proceed to the assembly of the door frame.

The joints of the box elements can have different connections - straight lines with an overlay of one beam on another, or end-to-end at an angle of 45 degrees.

The box is assembled according to measurements taken, which can, for example, be taken from an old set. Using a square to control the straightness of the corners, the elements of the box are set, marks are made if corners of 45 degrees are cut. Then, with the help of a miter box, the corners are sawn off, after which the box is laid out on the floor and knocked down with nails or fastened with self-tapping screws.

The location of the details of the box "overlaid", at a right angle

Screwdrivers

If the elements of the box are connected to the overlay at a right angle, then they can also be knocked down with nails or twisted with self-tapping screws.

Both in the first and in the second case, the connection must be made very carefully, since the nails can inadvertently come out in a completely undesirable place.

When the box is assembled, hinges are screwed to both it and the door, and a lock is installed, there are two ways to go. So, you can put the door on the hinges right away, and then install it together with the box in the doorway. Another option is to install the box first and then hang the door.

Video: Installing the door step by step, with all the details

  • If the first option is selected, then the door must be locked so that it does not open. Then, carefully, without distortions, install the entire set in etc oym, expose it with the help of a level and vertically in the longitudinal and transverse planes, and horizontally, carefully driving wooden wedges into the gaps between the wall and the box for fixing.

Then, it is necessary to fix the box to the wall using anchors, drilling through holes for them in several places, two on each side.

Holes are drilled under hide” so that the screw heads are recessed into the wood of the box. Then they can be masked with special decorative covers, matching them to the color of the wood, or covered with a compound made from wood glue and sawdust.

The resulting gaps must be filled with mounting foam, wait for the expansion and complete drying of the polyurethane foam, after which excess composition, which protrude from the gaps, it will be necessary to carefully cut.

  • In the second case, only a new box is fixed in the opening, it is also leveled, fastened with wedges and anchor elements, but at the same time it is necessarily wedged with a wooden beam in the center - so that the vertical posts do not bend in an arc in one direction or another.

Then, the gaps are also filled with mounting foam and left until the composition completely hardens. After that, the door is installed on the box on the hinges.

Now it remains to carry out the final event - to install platbands.

The connection of platbands at the corners of the door can also be of two types - end-to-end (used very infrequently) or at an angle of 45 degrees. The right angle on the cladding panels is also cut with a miter box, and they are precisely adjusted to each other.

It should be noted that you can save yourself from unnecessary problems with fitting the box and the door to it by ordering the entire set as an assembly, that is, already with hinges and a lock installed, as well as a canvas fixed in the door jamb. Before making a purchase, you need to take accurate measurements from the old set, and you can use them to make an individual order or purchase a finished model. The kit usually includes platbands of the required height and with correctly fitted joints.
