What to do if the key is broken in the lock or stuck? Open the lock or call the wizard?

In everyday life, situations often occur that are difficult to foresee and predict. Returning home from work, you, as usual, insert the key into the keyhole, and begin to make a small effort to open the door. But instead, the key breaks inside the lock with a crunch and screech, and you have a handle (a piece) in your hand.
What to do in such a situation? What tool is needed to get a piece of a key out of a keyhole? Will the lock work after a broken key?
All these questions are asked by the masters by phone, and in this article we will try to consider options for solving the problem on our own.

1. Try to get a piece of the key.

At first, you can try to get a chip with your hands. Sometimes a deft movement of the fingers is enough to get a piece of metal and open the lock with another key.

You can also try using tweezers or long nose pliers. The thinner the "grip" of the tool, the more likely you will hook the chip. But at the same time, effort is also important: simple eyebrow tongs are hardly enough to remove a metal piece.

You can also pick a piece of the key with a needle or a toothpick.

2. Disassemble the keyhole trim.

The keyholes of lever keys often use decorative overlays that close the holes in the door.
In the event that the key is broken in the lock and a piece remains inside, such pads only complicate the situation and prevent you from getting the piece.

In order to see the lock itself and all the holes, you need to remove the decorative trim and inspect the keyhole from the inside (a flashlight will help with this). When access to the lock is open, you can try to get a chip with tongs or any long "catchy" tool that comes to hand.

When removing the fragments of the key, make sure that all unnecessary "details" are removed, otherwise the lock will finally jam and you will have to call the master to open the lock

3. Use a magnet.

One way to get all the debris out of the lock if the key is broken in it is a powerful magnet.

A neodymium small magnet is best suited (get it from a keychain, toys), fixed with superglue on a long pin.

Such a mini-magnet can be put directly into the keyhole and it will attract all the "excess" in the castle.

With a large round magnet, the size of a washer, you can also try to get the key from the cylinder mechanism (larvae).

4. If the key sticks in the lock and does not open - use WD-40!

After removing the key, it can often happen that the lock sticks and the key does not turn in the lock.
This can be due to wear of the lock itself, or due to friction of the crossbars, wear of the lock cylinder, and so on (there are many reasons).

One of the quickest ways to solve such a problem is a penetrating lubricant (like WD-40, etc.)

Pour the grease liberally into the lock mechanism as far as possible and try again to “wiggle” it with the key.

If such a measure did not help, unfortunately more professional intervention in the mechanism is needed.
