Finishing slopes on the front door

The installed door at the entrance to the dwelling is an important part of every apartment in a multi-storey or own house. Most often, armored doors have recently begun to be used, although sometimes in old apartment buildings you can still find front doors made of chipboard, upholstered with leatherette. However, the appearance of the door will not be complete without well-executed slopes. And therefore, how to make the slopes of the front door is considered an extraordinary issue. Here it is important to decide on the material that will suit the design and the door, and only after making a decision to proceed with the work.

Qualitatively executed slopes emphasize the appearance of the door

If in the case of installing a door, it is most often performed by firms, then the property owners equip the slopes with their own hands - this is not difficult. You need to have the simplest construction skills, the required materials and tools.

Work begins with ensuring the tightness of the box both from the outside and, accordingly, from the inside. To maintain heat in the apartment, the opening needs to be securely sealed, so sealing must be done at the initial stage.

So, the front door in the house is installed. Safety is ensured, reliable high-quality protection that protects against heat loss and various external noises, as well as from sounds. It remains only to draw slopes. Ennobling the entrance opening from the outside is most often carried out with platbands or sealing joints with a solution using master installers, or with your own hands.

From the inside, everything looks much worse. You can see the bare concrete, the fastening elements of the door. All this must be hidden by making slopes. It should be noted that when installing entrance doors, not all companies perform interior door joints. In this case, the specified work will inevitably have to be done independently or specially hire builders. However, not every owner wants his apartment, albeit temporarily, to be run by builders, who in most cases do not work very carefully.

You can cope with the finishing of slopes without resorting to the help of specialists

The execution process itself is not particularly complicated, so, weighing all the pros and cons, it is better to do everything with your own hands.

Of course, it is worth noting that the design design is not limited to finishing the sidewalls of the front door opening, so here are all the subtleties in more detail.

Preparatory work

If the gap between the door frame and the wall is sealed with foam, then it is necessary to check the tightness of this gap. This can be done with the fire of a lighter or match, "walking" around the entire door perimeter with the door closed. If the fire moves, then it means that the gap is through and it needs to be additionally sealed with the same foam. After the mounting foam has hardened, we remove its excess and begin to carry out finishing work. When sealing the gap with cement mortar, the density, as a rule, is of better quality.

All cracks must be securely sealed.

If the outer door is located in an opening with a recess, then, of course, it is necessary to install external slopes. If it is installed at a level with the adjacent wall, then when sealing this gap, it is necessary to leave wooden mortgages in the solution for further fastening of the door elements. When the cement mortar has hardened, it is necessary to attach the platbands. Usually platbands are chosen taking into account the color and design solution of the door. For fastening door platbands, the left mortgages are used, to which they are attached either with screws or special brackets. The platbands form not only a decorative look, but also close the door gap, thereby protecting the locks and mounting fasteners from breaking.

In the case when there are slopes at the front door on the outside, they are usually sealed with cement mortar to ensure greater reliability and strength.

Implementation of external slopes

How to make slopes at the front door from the outside? First of all, they are cleaned of debris and plaster residues. Then a layer of soil is applied. After the primer hardens, a cement mortar is “spread” to level the surface. The final stage of work upon completion of the appearance is painting work. This is the best option for performing external slopes. External finishing using drywall, plastic, etc. is not desirable because such materials do not have the strength of cement mortar.

External slopes are best done using cement mortar

Creating internal slopes

The initial preparatory stage for the implementation of internal slopes is similar to external ones. The same cleaning of the gap from debris and pre-priming. Then you need to decide on the required materials for their creation. Today, the most commonly used methods for finishing the sides inside the opening are:

  • Slopes made of drywall. If there are huge irregularities on the walls, this problem can be solved very simply - install drywall. In this case, you do not need to level the wall.
  • Plastering. This type is the simplest, and, by the way, the cheapest way to finish. On the surface of the side walls, the plaster is “thrown” layer by layer, and the sidewall is ready for further finishing.
  • Slopes from PVC panels. Despite the fact that plastic slopes are widely used in window openings, plastic has not received such a large use for door decoration. Most often, a plastic coating is made when the door is finished inside with a plastic material. In other cases, the combination of plastic is not very in harmony with the entrance, for example, an armored door.
  • Slopes made of wood. Wood for decorating slopes is considered the most popular coating. The tree almost always fits harmoniously into the design of the apartment interior.

Execution of plasterboard slopes

This material as such does not belong to the finishing, it can only be used as a base. As stated earlier, drywall should be used when the side of the wall where the slope is to be made has huge irregularities. Drywall should be used to simplify the task of leveling the sidewall.

Drywall is effective when the side wall has bumps

Before applying drywall, the wall must first be cleaned and then well primed. While the primer dries, there will be enough time to take measurements and cut the sheets of material according to the measurements. When measuring, it is necessary to take into account that the doorway will be made with a slope, so these sheets will need to be cut at an angle. After cutting the sheets, you need to attach them to be sure of the correct cutting. As they say, measure seven times...

When the soil is dry, you can proceed to fixing the drywall panels designed to finish the side walls from the inside. Fastening drywall to the wall can be done in two ways: with special glue or dowels. In extreme cases, you can mount it on screws, but you need to use washers of large diameters. Of course, when fastening with screws, wooden mortgages must be installed in the cavity to be filled between the surface of the sidewall and drywall. The best option is to use glue. Using glue, you can set the cut panels to the spirit level.

The process of installing drywall is built according to the following scenario: first, panels are attached to the sides, and then from above. The glue is applied with a brush, both after smearing the entire surface, and every 10-15 cm with cakes. After fixing the sheets of drywall, we proceed to the finish. When finishing the surface on the basis of drywall, putty and special corners are used to form even corners in the side walls.

Plastering slopes - a method proven over the years

As described above, a simple and inexpensive method for performing slopes is their plastering. In order to plaster the sidewalls of the doors, it is necessary to clean the space to be processed from dust, old plaster and other elements. Then prime the wall surface. After the primer has hardened, plaster the wall with a spatula. To form even corners, you can use special metal corners, called paint corners. To fix the corner, a layer of plaster is “thrown” on both sides of it, and then the corner is pressed into the solution, then it is smoothed with a spatula under the plaster layer.

Slope plastering is a traditional method

The next step in solving the question of how to level the slopes of the front door is to clean the walls with an emery cloth so that the surface is even. The final stage of surface finishing will be painting work.

Slopes made of PVC

In the production of plastic slopes, we perform the following operations. First you need to make a frame from metal or wooden profiles, make all the required measurements, and then cut the panels. For cutting plastic panels, it is best to use a grinder or a jigsaw. This will give you smooth edges. Plastic can be easily cut with a knife, but when using a knife, its blade can easily “go” to the side. Then you need to attach the cut panels to the surface to check the correct cutting and, if necessary, make a more accurate fit to the dimensions.

For the installation of plastic slopes you need a frame

During installation, it is necessary, as in the case of drywall, to first install the side plastic sheets, and then the top ones. Using wood screws or self-tapping screws, we fix the starting profile to the PVC door frame. Then we fix the PVC sheets on the fabricated frame, and then the sheets of the upper slope. When the installation is completed, the seams are treated with silicone. The empty cavity between the slope surface and the wall can be filled with foam.

It should also be noted that the design of the side walls with plastic can be done with both ordinary plastic and sandwich panels. Their difference lies in the fact that ordinary PVC sheets are ordinary plastic sheets 5 mm wide, which have hollow partitions inside. Plastic sandwich panels differ from ordinary ones in that they consist of three layers: plastic sheets along the edges, and a layer of insulation inside. The insulation of the sandwich panel makes them thicker, but warmer. Therefore, if your budget allows you to fork out, then install sandwich panels and you will get insulated slopes.

Slopes lined with wood

The most optimal slope for a door is considered to be wooden, especially since quite often the door decor is made under a tree. At the same time, it must be said that wooden sidewalls on a metal front door look much better than PVC or plastered ones. In most cases, the slopes are sheathed with laminate or MDF. It depends on the given insulation properties and the width of the walls.

For example, to insulate the opening with slopes, you can use an MDF board. If the side walls are small in width and the MDF board is not suitable for them, then you can use a laminate.

Wooden slopes are no less practical than other options.

Installation of a wooden slope, as in the options described above, should begin with sealing the slots with mounting foam, followed by removal of its excess, then the wall is cleaned and primed. After that, you need to decide on the type of slopes that can be placed at a slight angle or perpendicular to the wall. Thus, the starting strips are mounted depending on the type of slope chosen. If the side walls are perpendicular to the wall, then the fastening strips are made of the same thickness. With corner slopes, the plank located at the door is taken wider, and the plank near the corner is thinner.

Mounting rails are nailed to the wall with dowels. Here, unlike creating slopes from other materials, first of all we attach the top slope, since it will be the base one, from where the dimensions will come from when cutting the side panels. You can fix the tree with glue or self-tapping screws. We seal the seams of the fixed elements with silicone that does not have a color.

Here are the possible methods for sheathing the slopes of the door of a house or apartment. Now you can safely finish the side walls of your front door yourself. As you can see, there are no such complex production processes here. And the choice of finishing method will depend on your wallet and taste.
