How to install platbands on doors?

Helpful Hints

Renovation… For those who are familiar with this endless and costly process, there is no greater curse than the desire to live in eternal repair! However, let's imagine that the repair is over, the floors are filled and covered, the ceilings are hung, doors are installed, wallpaper is pasted on the walls and it remains only to install trim on the door frames in order to enjoy the results of labor.

As a rule, platbands are really installed after the completion of almost all work. You have to call the master who installed the doors again, set the time, wait a few days, spend money and all this for the sake of what you can do yourself even without any special skills. This article is intended for this - to help install trim on the doors with your own hands.

Installation of trim on the door - measure seven times, cut once!

In order to nail the platbands (and the masters recommend nailing the platbands with special decorative nails, since all other methods, including liquid nails, do not bring the desired result), it is necessary to carefully measure the side and top of the platbands, which are usually joined to each other at an angle of 45 degrees. However, what to do if you do not have the appropriate tool to make the necessary cut?

In fact, it is recommended to prepare the upper part of the casing in advance. Let the door installer do it, who, of course, has the necessary tools. Also it makes sense to prepare the upper parts of the sidewalls by cutting them at an appropriate angle. If the platbands were not prepared in advance, you will have to get out using the tool that is at hand, up to the hacksaw, although the ideal option for cutting at an angle of 45 degrees is the so-called carpentry conditional (miter saw).

It should be borne in mind that it will be extremely difficult to make ideal angles with a hacksaw. Not only will the cuts look rough and even torn, but you won't have the proper opportunity to file them, so it will have to be finalized with a file. In the absence of a joiner's miter box, the use of an ordinary "grinder" may be a tolerable option. The main thing to remember when measuring is that the architraves are installed at a distance of about five millimeters from the inner edge of the door frame.

How to nail trim on the door with unevenness on the frame or wall?

So, we assume that the corners of the platbands are cut off, it remains only to cut off the sidewalls along the length below and nail them to the door. In the ideal case, when the wall with the frame are absolutely flat joining surfaces, it is quite simple to do this (especially if you have an air gun). However, what to do if the wall around the door frame protrudes somewhat above the frame due to, for example, plaster elements or wallpaper?

In this case, experts recommend cutting a groove in the casing on their own, if one was not provided in advance. The main thing to remember when cutting this groove is - caution and caution again, because otherwise you can simply split the casing. The depth of this so-called median selection depends on the thickness of the clypeus. It is recommended to deepen the sample with a chisel.

This procedure can be quite tedious, but necessary and effective. However, despite all your efforts, certain gaps between the casing and the frame may remain. In this case it makes sense to use silicone or acrylic sealant of the appropriate color. Some people suggest using a puffer to seal such cracks. Be that as it may, it makes sense to remember that these materials take time to set. That is why, in order not to stain the frame and trim, cover them with masking tape beforehand.

Do-it-yourself platbands - and the eye rejoices, and self-esteem grows!

If all the preparatory stages are completed successfully, then you just have to carefully nail the trim to the frame and go to your family so that they accept the work. Keep in mind that experts recommend drive in decorative nails approximately every 50 centimeters. These nails can be driven almost into the very edge of the architraves, which will preserve the well-known aesthetics.

What does it cost us to build a house? And what is the platband to attach? In any case, remember that there is no impossible work, there is only a lack of information and tools. By the way, if you have never had a "grinder", and you have never heard of a joiner's miter box, think about how critical it is for you that the platbands fit exactly at an angle of 45 degrees? If not critical, then a simple hacksaw will be enough to successfully complete this work.
