Do-it-yourself stretch ceiling step-by-step instructions. Self-installation of a stretch ceiling. Installation of lighting fixtures

Do-it-yourself suspended ceilings, video tutorials will help you correctly complete all stages of the work. The canvas is a fabric with a polyester base or PVC. It is attached to the ceiling to special profiles. Despite the apparent simplicity of the ceiling, the technology for performing the work has its own difficulties and features.

Video lessons contain minimum required knowledge to perform self-installation. It is equally important to understand the characteristics of the materials and tools used.

Modern stretch ceilings, despite their beauty, have high performance properties. They are perceived organically in large rooms. For small rooms it is better to choose a matte ceiling surface.

Why stretch ceiling

The advantages of a stretch ceiling are as follows:

  • Achieving perfect flat surface. Elimination of surface irregularities and defects is included in the installation technology. The fabric used is solid, the soldering points are invisible. You can use seamless fabric.
  • Simple technology ceiling finishing, which does not require vacating the premises and removing construction waste. It is enough to warm the room and fix the material.
  • Long service life. Stretch ceilings last for more than years if the rules of use are followed.
  • Increased functionality: it’s easy to hide sound insulation, wiring and install any lighting fixture.
  • Moisture resistance. The canvas can withstand a lot of weight and can protect the apartment from flooding.

The listed qualities are confirmed by numerous reviews. Those who do the installation themselves write about simple and understandable technology.

Equipment

Installation equipment and components must be prepared in advance. This will greatly speed up and simplify installation. To secure the tension fabric you will need the following tools:

  • ladder;
  • perforator;
  • thermal cushion for heating the canvas;
  • gas bolon;
  • level (preferably laser);
  • hammer and screwdrivers;
  • special knife with replaceable blades.

Necessary materials:

  • Canvas. It is mounted at a short distance from the ceiling. The type of canvas (film or fabric) is chosen based on personal preferences. The amount of canvas will determine the area of the ceiling.
  • Baguette. Special metal or plastic profile. Plastic is cheaper, and aluminum is durable. A baguette is needed to secure the canvas. The required quantity is determined along the perimeter of the ceiling.
  • Dowels and screws. They are purchased with a reserve, since the strength of the structure depends on the frequency of fastening.
  • Soundproofing if necessary. Materials are placed in the gap between suspended ceiling and ceiling slab.

Types of stretch ceiling

To do right choice, you should understand the types and features of canvases for stretch ceilings:

  • Fabric based- made of polystyrene, and the cam method is used for fastening.
  • PVC fabric- made of polyvinyl chloride. This type of fabric is fastened in various ways: wedge, glazing bead and harpoon.

In addition to differences in material, the canvases are presented in a wide range color scheme and price range. These parameters are determined based on planned costs and personal preferences.

Stretch ceilings can have several levels. Multi-level structures are created using profiles and drywall, creating a frame.

Self-installation of a stretch ceiling

The surface of the ceiling slab is not ideal - there are many cracks and differences. For correct fastening profiles are marked using one of the following methods:

  • Measure the height of the corners and leave marks. Sometimes the difference reaches more than 5 cm. The marking should take into account the gap between the slab and the canvas - at least 3 cm.

The distance should be increased if spotlights are used. They should fit there.

  • Draw a straight line around the perimeter of the room. The profile is attached to the marks.

Marking is an important step, as it affects the entire structure.

Profile fastening

After marking, you can attach the baguettes to the walls using dowels and self-tapping screws. Minimum distance between them - 8 cm. Initially, attach the baguette near the walls.

The first screw should not be at the edge of the profile.

Now is the time to think about lighting. If a chandelier is purchased, then the profile is fixed taking into account its dimensions. After installation, the profile sheet cannot be secured.

Installation of the canvas

Before installation of the canvas, the room is heated to 40 degrees. A heat gun will help achieve the required temperature.

If installing a stretch ceiling yourself does not involve further work in this area, then it will be more economical to rent a heat gun.

Installation occurs in stages:

  • The canvas is carefully unpacked. Hands must be clean, as it gets dirty easily and quickly.
  • The canvas is heated and secured in one of the corners.
  • Using “crocodiles”, opposite corners are fixed, having previously secured it.
  • Fix it in the remaining corners and warm the ceiling well. The instructions for each canvas indicate the angle from which work should begin.

  • Constantly heating the canvas, remove one of the clamps in the corner. It is inserted into the baguette with the side with the angled spatula. When securing the rest of the part, you need to hold the beginning. This is necessary until it is secured to the lock on both sides. The remaining corners are secured in the same way.
  • Straight sections are secured. If there is a seam, several locks are used. Next, a gap is maintained and a pair of locks is used again.
  • The remaining sections are being installed.

When folds form, straighten the fabric, making sure to heat it.

  • Hang lamps and cut holes for them.

For a complete understanding, you should watch the video lessons, starting from the first stage.

The fabric sheet is mounted in the same way. The only difference is that you don't need to heat it up.

A suspended ceiling can radically change a room when minimum costs money and time. A lot of advantages explain its popularity. Self-installation tension fabric is simple and fast if you master the technology.

The topic of our article today will be suspended ceiling, or rather it: varieties, advantages and, of course, installation. Well, first of all, let’s figure out what’s so special about this type of ceiling.

Stretch ceilings are made of polyvinyl chloride (a kind of PVC film) or polyester-based fabric, fixed in a special profile. At first glance, everything is very simple, however, the process of installing a stretch ceiling contains many subtleties and complexities. Let's move directly to the answer to the question: why is a stretch ceiling so good?

Advantages of suspended ceilings

Firstly, a suspended ceiling allows get a really flat (almost perfect) surface. Installation suspended ceiling associated with a large amount of work aimed at eliminating various defects. Among them: careful installation of plasterboard boards at a level, then sealing seams and cracks on the surface, and, of course, puttying the fastening points. Of course, it is impossible to obtain an ideal ceiling surface with such a quantity finishing works Well, it’s very difficult, and practically impossible for a non-professional. A stretch ceiling is a solid canvas with no traces of installation. True, one can object here, since the designer canvas also consists of soldered sections of film, but the places where the canvas is welded are practically invisible. But, despite this, there is a choice, since there are also seamless stretch ceilings.

Secondly, installing a stretch ceiling is completely not a troublesome task. For example, let's take installation process of a suspended ceiling made of plasterboard which we wrote about in the previous article: working with plasterboard boards is accompanied by big amount dust and various construction debris. In addition, the room being finished simply needs to be cleared of all furniture and other interior items, which, you see, creates not only great inconvenience, but also takes a lot of effort and time. And then the process of installing a suspended ceiling itself requires a lot of time to complete all the work: installing a frame from a profile, bending a plasterboard sheet, filling joints and fastening points, priming, painting, etc.

All this does not apply to stretch ceilings: to install a stretch ceiling, it is enough to mount a kind of frame that is attached only around the perimeter of the room, warm up the room, stretch and secure the ceiling fabric.

If we talk about service life, then a suspended ceiling will give odds to any other. Stretch ceiling warranty from the manufacturer from 15 years old, while the situation with suspended ceilings is much worse with a guarantee of up to 15 years. One of the main advantages of a suspended ceiling is its resistance to shrinkage of new buildings (as you know, a house shrinks, which causes cracks to form), which is a disaster for a suspended ceiling. It is also worth noting separately the cases of flooding by neighbors above. When this happens in a room with a suspended ceiling, you have to complete replacement, but a suspended ceiling is absolutely not afraid of moisture. A stretch ceiling can bend under the weight of water right down to the floor, which you can see in the picture, without being harmed. The strength of a PVC stretch ceiling is 100-120 kilograms per 1m2. It is very easy to pump out the collected water, and the canvas will return to its original position, as if nothing had happened. It is also worth noting that the suspended ceiling does not collect condensation, which makes it possible to use it in rooms with high humidity.

Stretch ceiling has great functionality. It has good thermal insulation and excellent sound insulation, suitable for installation in the hall, as well as in kitchens or bathrooms, as it is fireproof, allows you to mount any lighting fixtures from bulky chandeliers to miniature spotlights. And also a suspended ceiling perfect option for rooms with low ceilings: when installing a suspended ceiling, more than 10 cm is subtracted from the total height of the room, whereas when installing a stretch ceiling, only 5 cm.

We have just listed the functional advantages of a stretch ceiling, but we should also not forget about their aesthetic appeal. For this purpose, manufacturers produce films of a wide variety of colors (by the way: the color of PVC film does not fade over time), textures ( natural wood, marble, metallic, etc.), and the surface is not only matte, but even glossy, thanks to which famous designers use this material for visual increase room spaces.

But, despite this diversity, the most beautiful view The design of a stretch ceiling is a technique called the “starry sky” effect. This effect stretch ceilings are obtained in two ways: the first - using light guides and a light generator, or the second - using LEDs.

The first method is that light guides are directed to the places of the supposed stars, and light is supplied with the help of a light generator. You can tinker a little and make it more elegant starry sky effect To do this, you need to attach lenses to the light guides (Swarovski rhinestones...) As a result, we get a simply fabulous effect with .

The use of an LED “starry sky” also has both strong and not so strong sides... Using the controller, you can create various dynamic pictures such as celestial twinkling or movement, which is impossible in the first case. However, even when using the first type of “starry sky” on light guides, there are advantages, for example, the design is waterproof, which makes it possible to use it in rooms with high humidity.

Minuses

As you know, nothing is ideal, this also applies to suspended ceilings. Such a ceiling can be easily damaged by a sharp object. But a more significant drawback of a stretch ceiling at the moment is its price, which ranges from several tens to several hundred dollars per 1 square meter. Well, probably the last, but no less important drawback of suspended ceilings is the complexity of their installation and the need for special equipment.

Do-it-yourself stretch ceiling installation

Before installing the ceiling, you need to clarify a few points:

1. Stretch ceilings are made of PVC film and polyester-based fabric;

2. It is undesirable to use lighting fixtures with a power of more than 45 W, otherwise they will heat the ceiling, causing it to lose its elasticity and elasticity.

Now we will look at one of the most simple ways installing a stretch ceiling - when there are no protruding communication pipes coming out of the ceiling or various protrusions near the room. And to attach the ceiling film we will use a special baguette profile.

First, you need to determine the lowest corner in the room and from there carry out further installation of the stretch ceiling. To do this, we use a hydraulic level, find the angle we need, retreat 2-3 centimeters for the convenience of attaching the baguette (it all depends on the curvature of the ceiling and its differences). Next, in the same way, you need to mark the zero level around the entire perimeter of the room. Once the zero level line is ready, you can proceed to the next stage.

At the next stage, we measure the corners in the room - this is necessary for high-quality joining of the profile-baguette in the corners. To do this, we use a special folding protractor.

There is a zero level, all the necessary measurements have been completed - you can proceed to attaching the profile. But before proceeding directly to the installation of the profile rail, it must be prepared. There are two possible ways here:

  1. In the first case, the slats should be longer than the width of the room - in this case, the edges of the slats are filed at an angle equal to half corner of the room with a measured protractor;
  2. In the second, the slats should be shorter than the width of the room - in this case, one corner of the slats is filed at half the angle of the room, and the second at 90 degrees (to clearly adjoin the second piece of the profile). Next, we take the missing section of the profile and do the same with it, only we make a bevel for the opposite corner. We carefully glue the two parts of the profile with glue.

Then we attach the profile rail to the wall according to the intended zero level using dowels or self-tapping screws. As a result, we should get a room with an attached profile on the wall around the perimeter of the room.

Now with the help heat gun or a fan heater, we heat the room to a temperature within the aisles of 45-50 degrees. And only upon reaching required temperature You can unwind the PVC ceiling film.

When with everyone preliminary preparations Once completed, you can proceed directly to stretching the fabric. Installation of the canvas begins with the base corner (as a rule, it is marked on the film by the manufacturer), then we attach the diagonally opposite corner, and so on. Once the 4 corners are secured, you can begin attaching the sides; they are installed evenly from the corners to the center. It is worth noting that for high-quality and easy installation of a stretch ceiling, its canvas must be heated to 55-65 degrees. As we have already said, this ceiling installation procedure applies only to ceilings based on PVC films. If you are installing a fabric stretch ceiling based on polyester, then the order is slightly different - first attach the sides, and then proceed to the corners.

Thus, we briefly examined the process of stretching film and fabric onto the ceiling, and now let’s take a closer look at the types of fastening of suspended ceilings.

Harpoon fasteners for stretch ceilings

Usually, this type Fasteners are used only for installing ceilings based on PVC film. It got its name due to the type of fastening element at the end of the film in the form of a harpoon. Baguette in in this case represents aluminum profile. This type of fastener is the main one for ceilings made of PVC films, however, in addition to this, the glazing bead method is no less popular due to its cheapness, but, nevertheless, it is not so reliable.

Harpoon fastening of PVC film

1 - Harpoon;

2 - Baguette;

3 – Ceiling PVC film;

4 - Base ceiling;

6 – Room wall.

Bead fasteners for stretch ceilings

With this type of fastener, use U-shaped profile with a wooden bead that clamps the ceiling sheet. As we have already said, this method of fastening is cheaper, but less reliable.

With this type of fastening, a U-shaped aluminum profile and a wooden bead are used, which clamps the ceiling sheet. As mentioned above, this method is used in our open spaces to reduce the cost of the ceiling installation process.

To the disadvantages this method fasteners include:

  • Over time, the wooden bead may pop out of the groove;
  • And in order to reliably fix the film, you need to have sufficient experience.

4 – Base ceiling.

After the ceiling canvas is installed, only the finishing touches remain, such as: install a decorative insert that hides the ceiling mounting system and carry out installation and installation lighting fixtures(chandelier or spotlights). While everything is clear with decorative inserts and plugs, the installation of lighting fixtures is far from clear.

To install a chandelier on a suspended ceiling, you will need a plastic ring with a slightly smaller diameter behind the decorative base (cover) of the chandelier (so that it hides the ring). This ring must be glued to the film in the previously designated location for attaching the chandelier. Once the glue has completely dried, you can safely cut a hole in the ring without fear of tearing the fabric and attach the chandelier to the base ceiling.

Fabric ceiling in the future it will be possible to paint with acrylic paints, creating various effects, for example, sea waves or clouds, etc.

We hope that our article will help you make a suspended ceiling with your own hands, without any problems.

Installation of stretch ceiling "Clipso"

Even if the room is made perfect renovation, the highest quality/stylish finishing materials were used, then the presence of a cracked ceiling will reduce the assessment of the work done to zero. And in order not to re-whiten the ceiling surface every year, experts recommend using modern solution this problem - we're talking about about stretch ceilings.

Advantages of suspended ceilings

This type of coating solves several issues at once:

  • hides minor errors on the ceiling surface;
  • provides perfect appearance;
  • does not require repair or replacement for a long time;
  • allows the use of various decorative “chips”.

Many people are confused by the need to involve craftsmen in the installation of a stretch ceiling, but if you strictly follow the instructions and carry out all the manipulations step by step, then installing a stretch ceiling with your own hands is quite possible.

Preparatory work

Installing a tension fabric is a painstaking and scrupulous task that cannot stand fuss. Therefore, before laying out/fastening the canvas, it is necessary to carry out all the preparatory work. This process boils down to the following tasks:

  1. We work with wiring. Here you need to attach it to the existing one ceiling surface reliable - do not allow the wires to come into contact with the stretch ceiling fabric.

  1. Warming up the room. This The final stage preparatory work - the room in which the suspended ceiling is supposed to be installed must be heated to 40-50 degrees. Experts recommend Special attention devote plastic windows(if there are any in the room) - you need to remove the slope corners from them.

That’s it, the preparatory work is completed, it’s time to proceed directly to installing the stretch ceiling with your own hands. But be sure to check the availability of the necessary tools and components. These include:

  • roulette;
  • perforator;
  • screwdriver;
  • two small blades - straight and angled;
  • a hair dryer or heat gun - any powerful heating device.

Naturally, the stretch ceiling itself and the profiles to which it will be attached must be ordered and delivered in advance. The profiles used for fastening stretch ceilings differ in the method of fastening:

  • harpoon, glazing bead (wedge) - used in working with film webs;
  • clip-on – designed to work with fabric ceilings.

It is believed that it is more practical and reliable to use the harpoon method of attaching a stretch ceiling. With this method (harpoon), a hook made of identical material as the ceiling canvas itself is welded on the edge of the canvas (along the perimeter) - the hook is inserted into the profile (a click will be heard) and the canvas is tensioned.

Many people prefer the glazing bead method of installing a stretch ceiling because of its low cost, but we should not forget about the disadvantages of this type of ceiling mounting:

  • dismantling the structure is practically impossible (but with the harpoon method it is possible to partially dismantle the suspended ceiling);
  • with the glazing bead method it is very difficult to make multi-level ceilings;
  • without a harpoon, it is problematic to stretch the fabric - the glazing bead method guarantees the formation of sagging;
  • wooden glazing beads dry out (this is a natural process) and may simply fall out of the profile - in the case of a harpoon this is impossible;
  • The glazing bead method involves installing the fabric “by eye” - this leads to uneven seams.

Do not forget about additional components - if special clips-clothespins are needed in any case, then various decorative elements and clamps are selected individually. If you plan to install chandeliers on a suspended ceiling, then be sure to purchase plastic rings for the lamps.

Stages of installing a stretch ceiling using the harpoon method

There is nothing complicated in the installation process of the finishing material in question - just read the instructions and step-by-step recommendations to do everything yourself. But the cost decorative covering will decrease by almost half - so it’s worth a try even if you have no construction and repair skills at all.

Step one

Using a tape measure and a plumb line, we mark the ceiling in the places where the profiles will be attached. These should be absolutely straight lines around the entire perimeter of the surface. The profile itself needs to be drilled in several places - for example, every 30-40 cm, which will indicate the places where it is attached to the ceiling.

Next, we make markings along the drawn lines to understand the places where the profile is attached - these points should coincide in distance with the holes that were previously drilled in the profile. Now, according to the markings, we make holes in the ceiling using a hammer drill - select a drill diameter of 6 mm. All that remains is to fasten the profiles around the perimeter of the ceiling and secure them with self-tapping screws.

Note:When purchasing a profile, experts recommend giving preference to aluminum samples - they are as light as possible and have a long service life.

Step two

Unpack the film. This can be done already in a heated room, that is, in preparatory work You can skip the point of heating the room to 40-50 degrees, but do this immediately after installing the profiles along the perimeter of the ceiling surface.

Note:There should not be any sharp corners near the place where the film ceiling is unpacked - they can easily cut the coating, which will lead to the need to order a new one or repair it.

Do not worry if, when unpacking, folds were found on the canvas - through a short time, when the suspended ceiling is already installed, everything will smooth out. The purchased stretch ceiling canvas already has exact dimensions (they are indicated at the time of order) and a base angle - the entire installation process begins with it. We hang the canvas on hanging clips that were installed in the corners of the ceiling in advance.

Note:It is important to prevent the fabric from being torn/damaged by the sharp edges of the clips - you can wrap them in something soft.

As a result of this step in the process of installing a stretch ceiling with our own hands, we will get a canvas fixed at the corners with sagging.

Step three

Using a heat gun in which the air is heated to 70-80 degrees, we make the fabric more elastic and pliable. To do this, we simply direct a stream of hot air onto the already suspended covering.

Now you can begin the final fastening of the stretch ceiling corners to the profile - remove the clamps and, helping yourself with a spatula, tuck the stretch ceiling corners into the profile. The edge of the ceiling sheet has a special profile - a harpoon. It is the harpoon that is tucked into the grooves of the profile using a spatula until it makes a characteristic click. This must be done extremely carefully, without damaging the material. If you feel that it is difficult to tighten it and insert it into the profile, then stop working and warm up the stretch ceiling more strongly.

Ideally, this step is completed quickly enough - the well-heated film itself “jumps” into the profile, without any effort on the part of the master.

Step four

Only after clearly fixing the corners of the canvas to the profile can you begin to install straight sections of the canvas. To simplify the process you need to follow the instructions:

  • First, the fabric is tucked into the profile at the seams;
  • then the remaining freely hanging space is mentally divided into two or three fragments and alternately attached to the profile.

All this time, make sure that the canvas is constantly heated and the room temperature is maintained within 50 degrees.

Note:
If at any moment you feel that tensioning the ceiling and attaching the canvas to the profile is difficult, then again, stop working for a few seconds and direct air from the heat gun to the place of work. Under no circumstances should you pull or exert physical effort to achieve results - this will lead to damage to the stretch ceiling.

The actual installation of the stretch ceiling with your own hands is completed. All that remains is to insert a decorative rubber insert into the profile to hide the attachment points of the canvas or use a foam molding - it is glued to the wall and also serves as decoration.

After installing the stretch ceiling, you need to hang the lighting fixture (or fixtures) - this is where you will need a plastic ring. It is glued to the canvas, and a place is cut out along the inner contour for future mounting of a chandelier/lamp.

Nuances in installing a seamless fabric ceiling

Above are instructions for installing a stretch ceiling with your own hands from PVC, but seamless woven coverings are also available for sale - are there any special features of working with them? Eat! Moreover, you need to know them so that the result of the work is perfect.:

  • when attaching a seamless stretch fabric ceiling, you do not need to warm up the room - you must agree, this is a definite plus;
  • a profile installed around the perimeter of the ceiling must be purchased marked “increased strength”;
  • We begin to stretch the seamless ceiling from the center of the surface - a semblance of a cross is formed, from the middle of which the canvas is stretched to the corners;
  • for high-quality stretching of a seamless fabric ceiling, you will need a special spatula;
  • after stretching, edges hanging from the profile are sure to form - they are simply cut off with a knife.

Note:If, after installing a stretch fabric seamless ceiling with your own hands, folds have formed, then you can use a heat gun or a hair dryer - a directed stream of warm/hot air quickly solves the problem.

How to dismantle a suspended ceiling with your own hands

Dismantling the finishing material in question may be necessary if the wiring is faulty (remember - we fixed it to the ceiling?) or if liquid accumulates between the material and the ceiling (for example, the neighbors above them flooded it). In any case, the dismantling process can be done with your own hands, without inviting specialists. Step-by-step instruction:

  • getting rid of decorative ceiling plinth;
  • use a heat gun or a hair dryer to warm up the film;
  • carefully pull out the harpoons from the profiles (they directly “press”/fix the canvas) in the corners of the covering;
  • We do the same thing around the entire perimeter - remove the harpoons.

During the process of dismantling a PVC stretch ceiling, you will need to constantly warm up the film - this will prevent loss of elasticity and damage to the material.

If you have to carry out the described process with a suspended fabric ceiling, then there is no need to use a heat gun, but certain difficulties may arise when pulling out the fabric tucked into the profile - such material “adheses” tightly to the bead or clip.

After dismantling and fixing the problem, you will have to repeat the procedure for installing the stretch ceiling with your own hands.

The finishing material in question for the ceiling surface is perhaps the most reliable to date. If you operate it correctly and periodically carry out “hygienic procedures” on it, then for a long time you will not need either repair or replacement.

To install a suspended ceiling, which is a fairly popular design today, with your own hands, you need to have a good understanding of its installation technology. During installation, a number of nuances always arise, which are closely related to the individual characteristics of the designed ceiling. This article will discuss how to make a suspended ceiling with your own hands.

Installation technology

If you break down the entire installation process point by point, you will get the following instructions for installing a stretch ceiling with your own hands:

  • Ceiling marking and baguette installation;
  • Installation of lamps;
  • Installation of curtain hangers;
  • Ceiling stretching;
  • Installation of lamps;
  • Installation of cap and cornice.

Before making a suspended ceiling with your own hands, you need to consider each stage in detail so as not to encounter surprises during work.

Marking a stretch ceiling and installing a baguette

The first stage of installing a stretch ceiling includes the following operations:

  • Before installing a suspended ceiling with your own hands, you need to properly prepare the surface. It is necessary to remove the layer of old plaster and treat the ceiling with a primer and antiseptic - this will protect the structure from the appearance of mold and mildew, which always appear in areas that do not have any ventilation.
  • The next step is marking, which must be done before stretching the stretch ceiling with your own hands. Using a level you need to mark the horizon line. Next, you need to find the lowest point of the ceiling and calculate the distance at which spotlights with fasteners and wiring can be placed. The free space for installing these elements must be at least 7 cm. A pencil or paint cord is used to apply markings.

  • A baguette is attached to the marked areas. Aluminum baguettes perform best - they are more durable, so the likelihood of the stretch ceiling sagging is minimized. However, you can choose plastic elements. Rear end The baguette is sawn through in those places that will be adjacent to the corner sections of the walls. The baguette is attached to the wall using self-tapping screws and dowels, which are driven into the wall every 20 cm (if the walls are not very strong, then the step can be reduced to 10 cm). All joints of the structure are sealed with masking tape. Before installing a suspended ceiling, think through all stages of the work in detail.

Installation of lamps

  • First you need to purchase everything you need to install suspended ceilings, including mounting brackets for lamps. A good option There will be special platforms made of thermoplastic, which are selected in accordance with the diameter of the lighting fixtures already purchased. However, if necessary, you can take universal platforms that can be cut to fit any size of lamps.
  • The mortgages are attached to the ceiling with metal hangers. Exactly the same hangers are used to form the frame of a plasterboard ceiling. To fix the hangers, 3.5x11 mm self-tapping screws are used.

  • You need to make marks on the ceiling that will show the location of the lamps. When selecting lighting power, you should start from the proportion of 35 W lamp power per 1 m2 of ceiling. Each group of lamps has its own branch box, and the wires stretch right up to the areas where the lamps will be located. It is recommended to pull the wires through the corrugation - it is more reliable and safer.
  • The mortgages along with the wires are fixed to the ceiling. The second edge of the metal hangers is fixed, and you need to ensure that their lower level perfectly matches the level of the stretch ceiling.
  • The loop with the wires is taken out of the embed by about 15 cm and cut in half at the very bottom. The wires are stripped and insulated, after which the terminal blocks are installed. The insulation must be strong enough so that a short circuit cannot occur under the platform. The wires together with the terminal blocks are laid on the mortgage - otherwise these elements may interfere with the installation of the stretch ceiling.

Using the same technology, all elements for the chandelier, which will be located in the center of the ceiling, are installed. The only difference is the increase in the size of the mortgage platform.

Attaching curtain hangers

If the curtains will be attached to the ceiling, then you need to mount the appropriate hangers in advance, which is done as follows:

  1. First you need to install the mortgages for the cornices. Installation is very simple - first you need to drill holes, insert dowels into them and use self-tapping screws to fix the straight hangers. Next, a painting cord is stretched between the walls at the same height where the suspended ceiling will pass.
  2. At the measured level you need to install wooden beam suitable length. If the length is not enough, you need to take another piece and combine them. It is attached to the ceiling using metal hangers. In order for the wood to last long enough, it is recommended to treat it before installation. protective composition, which will prevent contact of the material and moisture.

Ceiling stretch

After completing the previous stages, you can finally start installing the canvas, for which you need to perform the following operations:

  • Correct installation of suspended ceilings requires that crocodile-type clothespins be hung at the corners of the ceiling, which will prevent the fabric from slipping out during the stretching process. Thanks to the existing gasket, the canvas will not be damaged. The installation in this example will be carried out using a gas gun and a round-cornered spatula.
  • The canvas is unrolled and carefully inspected for damage. If everything is in order, then the edges of the canvas are inserted into clothespins located in the corners. The canvas needs to be fixed in several more places and inserted into the baguette using a spatula. Gently heating the canvas with a gun, you need to tuck it into the baguette in the direction from the corners to the center.

  • If a Clipso-type canvas was chosen for installation, the installation will take place using a slightly different technology. In this case, a gas gun is not required - the canvas will be stretched over the hoop, and all unevenness will be smoothed out using a hairdryer.
  • The extra strips that hang down when stretched need to be cut off with a knife, but this can only be done if the fabric is well stretched. If the suspended ceiling sags, it is necessary to immediately solve this problem. Having tucked all the corners, you need to continue heating the canvas and tuck its middle part. To properly stretch the ceiling with your own hands, you need to warm up gas gun up to 60 degrees.
  • As the fabric is tensioned, the clamps can be removed. When installing the canvas, you need to try to simultaneously hold it and tuck it into the baguette. It is best to hire an assistant to complete the work - the installation will go much faster, and more attention can be paid to the quality of individual operations.

Installation of lighting fixtures

By installing the suspended ceiling with your own hands step by step and having completed all the previous operations, you can begin installing the lamps:

  • When the canvas is stretched, you need to find the points where the fixtures for the lamps were installed. Next, the thermal rings are taken and coated with a special adhesive. You can’t use regular glue - most of these compounds render the ceiling canvas unusable.
  • Thermal rings coated with glue are carefully applied to the mortgages and held for several minutes so that the glue sets. In the inner circle of the ring, the canvas is cut using a sharp knife. This operation performed with each mortgage. Through the resulting holes, wires are pulled out to connect the lamps.
  • Now you can proceed directly to installing the light bulbs. It is recommended to select them so that the power of each individual lamp is no more than 40 W - otherwise there is a very high risk of damage to the stretch ceiling fabric. Spotlights must have a rim that covers the thermal ring. In addition, when choosing lamps, you should give preference to products with cooling grilles and a durable radiator.

When all the light bulbs are installed in their places, all that remains is to check the lighting fixtures for functionality.

Installation of cap and cornice

Carrying out step-by-step installation of a stretch ceiling with your own hands, all that remains is to mount the cap and cornice of the stretch ceiling. As a result, there will be a noticeable gap between the wall and the suspended ceiling, to mask which you can use special skirting boards, matching them to the appropriate interior. Only the wall can be used as a support for the plinth - the ceiling is not a rigid structure, so when attached to it, the panel may be pulled and damaged. Attached to the mortgages on metal hangers ceiling cornice, on which curtains are hung.

Conclusion

It is not difficult to install a suspended ceiling with your own hands if you use the technology described in this article. Care and accuracy at every stage of work will allow you to create a high-quality and beautiful ceiling that will delight all residents and guests with its appearance.

Once upon a time, installing a suspended ceiling was considered solely as a way to hide a hopelessly uneven permanent ceiling. But by now they have learned how to make these structures so impressive that they are often installed even with the slabs lying absolutely flat. Let's see what kind of ceilings there are and how to install them correctly with your own hands.

Types of suspended ceilings

Stretch ceilings can be classified according to several criteria.

According to the material of the panel

There are two varieties:

  • PVC film;
  • textile.
  • Polyvinyl chloride (PVC) film

    It has a smooth surface that can be matte, glossy or satin. The latter, just like the glossy one, has a reflective surface. But the reflection turns out soft and blurry.

    The color of PVC film can be almost any, including pearlescent and chrome-like. It is possible to apply images using photo printing. In addition, the canvas can be made translucent.

    The surface of the PVC film can be matte, glossy or satin

    In addition to the variety of colors, the following advantages can be noted:

  • low cost;
  • the ability to wash away dirt;
  • waterproof (if flooded from above, the canvas will stretch and hold water);
  • there is an antifungal coating;
  • The “harpoon” fastening method is used, which is characterized by high reliability.
  • However, it must be taken into account that PVC films:

  • cannot be installed in unheated rooms (they crack at subzero temperatures);
  • easily damaged by sharp objects;
  • do not have soundproofing properties;
  • can attract dust due to electrification;
  • serve only 12 years.
  • Polyester or polyester fabric impregnated with polyurethane

    To impart moisture resistance, the canvas is additionally treated with varnish. The fabric ceiling is rough and resembles very high-quality plaster. The surface can imitate satin, suede; Also popular are two-layer fabric ceilings, which are made by laying embossed fabric on a mesh base. It is possible to apply images using photo printing.

    The fabric panel can imitate suede or satin. Any image can be easily applied to its surface using photo printing

    By variety of design fabric ceiling inferior to its PVC analogue, but it has its own advantages:

  • can be painted acrylic paint(4 layers allowed);
  • gives the impression of expensive material;
  • contributes more to creating a cozy home environment(PVC film has an unnatural cold shine);
  • considered a fireproof material (treated with impregnations that prevent fire);
  • has a service life of 20–25 years;
  • has high strength (not so afraid of sharp objects);
  • does not electrify and therefore does not attract dust;
  • easily tolerates low temperatures down to -40 0 C;
  • installation does not require heating of the canvas or the room;
  • has higher sound insulation properties compared to PVC.
  • This type of fabric cannot be washed, so it is not recommended to install it, for example, in the kitchen. It is also not suitable for rooms with high humidity, as it allows steam to pass through (mold will grow on the main ceiling due to dampness). When flooded, the fabric ceiling will not hold water - it will seep through it. If the impact of water is too strong, such a canvas may break from the fastening due to low elasticity.

    Fabric ceilings are best suited for rooms with expensive interiors.

    By type of canvas

    Two options are also available:

    One-piece (seamless)

    These are usually fabric ceilings, since a roll of this material can reach 5.0 m in width. From wide-format rolls, you can cut out a blank for a ceiling of any configuration - as long as one of its sides is no larger than the width of the roll. Tensioners ceiling structures, which do not have a seam, are installed within 4–5 hours.

    Using a wide panel, the ceiling can be made perfectly flat, regardless of the condition of its base

    Installing a seamless ceiling does not require the use of a heat gun.

    But ceiling systems of this type have a significant drawback: at the slightest damage to the canvas, it has to be completely replaced.

    Wide PVC films are now also produced, but the transverse size of such a panel is only 4.5 m.

    Composite (there are seams in the design)

    Usually, PVC sheets have to be made into composites, since the film is mainly supplied in narrow rolls - up to 130 cm. The seam connecting the strips of film to each other is carried out using a high-frequency welding machine. The connection line must be strong, since large loads are applied to it, and at the same time invisible. The process of obtaining a seam with such characteristics is complex; it is better not to undertake such work without experience.

    The equipment is equipped with a set of electrodes for the blade and harpoon

    Designers have long turned the problem of narrow panels into an advantage, practicing multi-colored ceilings when zoning a room or to create an unusual atmosphere in it.

    Seams are most noticeable on glossy materials. The more lamps on the ceiling, the more striking the joints of the stripes are. Seams on matte and satin surfaces are almost invisible.

    The thickness of the seam is directly proportional to the thickness of the base material

    You can mask the joint lines by placing them perpendicular to the windows. And the chandeliers are placed at the same distance from the seams.

    By design

    Several types of stretch ceilings are used:

  • Regular single level. The most ingenuous option is when a single fragment of canvas is stretched under the ceiling.

    Despite its simplicity, a stretch ceiling located in one plane gives the room elegant restraint.

  • Multi-level. The ceiling is divided into several sections, each of which is located on different heights. This design looks very interesting, especially if you choose the right lighting.

    A multi-level stretch ceiling will reliably disguise large unevenness in the ceiling and give the room originality

  • 3D ceiling. It works something like this: a canvas is stretched, say, with an image of a cloudy sky, under it is a transparent canvas with an image of a flying bird. We get a three-dimensional picture that makes an unforgettable impression on the viewer.

    The effect of a three-dimensional image is achieved by installing a two-layer stretch ceiling, the lower of which is made of transparent material. The main image is applied to it - a bird, a butterfly, a flower, etc.

  • Ceiling " starry sky" Many LEDs or light guides are installed behind the canvas, “distributing” light from the lamp. We get the illusion of stars overhead, which, if LEDs are used, also twinkle.

    The “starry sky” ceiling is appropriate in the bedroom

    Calculation of the quantity of canvas and components

    To make the calculation, it is necessary to measure the room with great accuracy (the maximum permissible error is 5 mm), which is prerequisite proper preparation baguette slats. Their total length will be equal to the perimeter of the room, that is, the sum of the lengths of all its sides: P = a + b + c + d.

    Opposite sides are not always equal in length, since the room may have a plan shape other than an ideal rectangle. Therefore, when taking measurements, you need to determine the length of each of the 4 sides.

    For a round ceiling, the perimeter is determined by the formula P = π x D, where π = 3.14; D is the diameter of the room.

    In addition to the main baguette, which is attached around the perimeter, you may need a so-called separation profile. It is used if the length of the room exceeds 8 m. With such dimensions, it is impossible to avoid sagging of the canvas, so the ceiling is divided into two parts with a separation profile. Usually its length is equal to the width of the room.

    The area of the canvas in the simplest case, when the room is strictly rectangular, is determined by the formula S = a x b, where a and b are the lengths of adjacent walls. But the fact is that the conditions, as already mentioned, are not always so ideal. Here is an example of a room that, due to the curvature of the walls, actually received a pentagonal shape.

    The total area of the stretch ceiling is determined as the sum of the simplest polygons

    In such cases, the floor plan is drawn to scale and divided into simple figures, in this example - into a triangle and a square. The area of a square is determined by the product of the lengths of the sides, and of a triangle - by the formula S = √(р x (р - a) x (р - b) x (р - с)), where the letters a, b and c indicate the lengths of the sides, and the letter P - semi-perimeter (P = 0.5 x (a + b + c)).

    If this triangle were rectangular, that is, its two sides intersected at an angle of 90 degrees, then the area would be calculated using the simpler formula S = (a x b)/2, where a and b are the lengths of the sides intersecting at right angles.

    For a round ceiling or element on two-level ceiling the area of the canvas is calculated using the formula S = 0.25 x (π x D 2).

    In the case of using glazing bead or cam fastening, the dimensions of the blade must be taken with some margin.

    In addition to the profiles and the canvas, you need to purchase dowels with which the profiles will be attached to the wall. The fastening pitch is usually 8 cm, that is, to determine the number of dowels, the perimeter of the room, taken in meters, must be divided by 0.08. For a reserve, you need to add 7% to the resulting value.

    Tools

    To install a stretch ceiling, the installer will need:

  • water level (two glass tubes connected by a hose);
  • dyeing cord;
  • a drill with an impact mechanism or a hammer drill;
  • screwdriver or screwdriver;
  • folding protractor;
  • heat gun (for PVC ceiling);
  • assembly spatula (can be replaced with a spatula);
  • marker.
  • The following tools are used for dismantling:

  • spatula: to avoid damaging the canvas, you need to grind it off sharp corners with an abrasive tool, and then wrap the working part with reinforced tape;
  • pliers with extended jaws: burrs, if any, need to be cleaned and polished so that the working surfaces are smooth;
  • mechanic's knife;
  • screwdriver with a curved tip;
  • heat gun (for dismantling PVC ceiling);
  • stepladder or sturdy table.
  • Methods of fastening the canvas

    All suspended ceilings, regardless of their type, are attached to a special profile (baguette), which is installed around the perimeter of the room. But the methods of fixing the canvas on a baguette are different:

    Harpoon

    Only PVC ceilings are attached using this method. A soft profile with a protrusion is welded onto the edge of the canvas. If you look at the bar in cross-section, then thanks to this protrusion it will resemble a harpoon, which is why this type of fastening received its name. Being inserted into the baguette, the bar clings to it with its protrusion and thus holds the stretched canvas.

    Device diagram harpoon mount stretch ceiling sheets

    The harpoon method of fastening is the most reliable.

    Beading

    A baguette is used to fasten a stretch ceiling using glazing beads. U-shaped. First, the edge of the canvas is inserted into it (for this it must have some reserve), and then a narrow strip is driven in - a glazing bead. After stretching, the excess canvas is cut off, after which the baguette is closed at the bottom with a decorative cap or ribbon.

    The bead method is usually used for installation fabric ceilings, the material of which does not allow welding of a harpoon profile. But it can also be used to install PVC panels.

    The bead method of fastening a stretch ceiling is used for materials to which it is impossible to weld harpoons

    The advantages of the method are:

  • low cost (most cheap way of all);
  • the ability to get by with a minimum distance from the main ceiling: usually 1.5–2 cm is enough;
  • quick installation;
  • when measuring a room, high accuracy is not required;
  • a minimal set of tools is used.
  • The disadvantages are the following:

  • when dismantling, part of the canvas has to be cut off;
  • the method is not suitable for creating multi-level or combined ceilings;
  • in some situations it is not possible to stretch the canvas evenly, which is why it may sag over time.
  • Cam

    In this case, a baguette of a special design is used - a cam, in which there is a movable spring-loaded element. The folded edge of the film is tucked with a special spatula or spatula into the gap between the fixed and movable elements. In this case, the latter bends easily.

    You can tuck the canvas into the clip using a spatula or a special spatula

    When the film, under the influence of tension forces, tends to break out of the cam, it acts on the protrusion of the moving part and it is pressed against the stationary one, blocking the film. The cam is therefore a self-clamping gripper. In everyday life it is also called “clothespin”.

    Step-by-step instructions for DIY installation

    The set of operations for installing suspended ceilings is divided into:

  • preparatory;
  • basic.
  • Preparatory stage

    By the time installation begins, the following work must be completed:

  • laying lighting wires under the ceiling;
  • leveling the walls (special attention should be paid to the upper part where the stretch ceiling molding will be attached);
  • wall decoration, while facing material must be secured sufficiently firmly;
  • garbage collection;
  • if a PVC ceiling is installed - removal from the room wooden furniture and plastic items, protection of PVC window frames with thermal insulation made of fabric folded in several layers (all these items can be damaged when the room heats up).
  • Installation of PVC ceiling

    Operations are performed in the following sequence:

  • Determine the lowest angle of the ceiling. To do this, using a water level, you need to mark marks in the corners of the room that lie in the same horizontal plane. Next, measure the distance from each notch to the corner of the ceiling located above it. The angle closest to the corresponding mark is the lowest.
  • Having retreated 2-3 cm from the lowest corner, which is necessary for the convenience of attaching the profiles, make a mark with a marker, after which, using a water level at the same height, make marks in other corners and along the walls.

    For greater marking accuracy, it is advisable to use a laser level

  • Using a folding protractor, measure the angle at which each pair of adjacent walls intersects. This is necessary in order to trim the profiles correctly.
  • The ends of the profiles are cut at an angle equal to half the angle between the walls, after which they are screwed with dowels to the walls along the marks made using a water level.

    All trimmed profiles are processed with a file to remove burrs. This operation will help maintain the integrity of the panel

  • Screwed to the main ceiling wooden blocks for mounting chandeliers and other lighting sources. The thickness of the bars is selected so that their lower surface touches the canvas once it is installed. In the same way - through wooden blocks - all other elements provided for by the design of the room are attached to the main ceiling.
  • Lay lighting wires to the location of the lamps.
  • The room is heated using a heat gun to a temperature of +60 0 C. Under such conditions, the PVC film will become plastic and can be stretched greatly.

    The air temperature in the room when installing a stretch ceiling should be 60 degrees

  • Unroll the PVC sheet and begin installation. The corner that needs to be fastened first is marked. Having fixed it in the baguette using a harpoon or bead, the opposite corner is fastened in the same way, and then the remaining two.

    The panel is fixed at opposite corners, and then attached around the perimeter in the direction from the corners to the middle of the side

  • Fasten the sides of the panel, moving from the corners to the middle.
  • At the bottom of the baguettes, plugs or special tapes are installed to hide the place where the canvas is attached.
  • Now you need to wait for the room to cool down. When the film cools down with it, it will stretch tightly and the stretch ceiling will become perfectly flat. After this, in the places where the lamps are supposed to be installed, special rings are glued to the canvas. Once the glue has set, you can cut a hole inside the ring.
  • The installation of the stretch ceiling is complete.

    Installation of fabric ceiling

    To install the textile panel, heating, as already mentioned, is not required. After installing the baguettes (carried out according to the same scheme as for the PVC ceiling), proceed as follows:

  • Using a spatula or spatula, the edge of the canvas is inserted into the baguette on the short side of the room.
  • The canvas is secured with temporary fasteners every 50–70 cm, while the outermost ones should be located at least 30 cm from the corners.
  • Fasten the canvas on the opposite side, stretching it at the same time. You need to move from the middle of the wall to the corners.
  • Sequentially fix the canvas on the long sides of the room.
  • If there are folds, they need to be warmed up with a regular hairdryer - synthetic fabric shrinks when heated.
  • The excess edges of the canvas sticking out from the baguettes are cut off.
  • There is no need to completely cut off the excess fabric - you should leave a couple of centimeters. If you happen to remove the canvas and then reinstall it, it will be impossible to tighten it without such a reserve.

    Finally, rings are glued to the canvas and holes for the lamps are cut.

    Rules of care

    If during operation the PVC stretch ceiling has become heavily covered with dirt, it can be washed using a special detergent. The sponge should be soft, but it is not allowed to press hard on the surface. The use of abrasive detergents is also unacceptable.

    A slightly dirty surface can be simply wiped with a damp cloth, also being extremely gentle.

    If the surface of the canvas is glossy, it should be periodically wiped with glass washing liquid or polish - these compounds restore shine. A similar effect is produced by treatment with a solution of ammonia.

    If possible, clean the fabric ceiling using the dry method - with a soft brush or a special vacuum cleaner designed for delicate cleaning. TO wet cleaning resort only as a last resort, in which case it is necessary to use detergents gentle action and try not to rub the same place for a long time.

    How to remove a suspended ceiling yourself

    If it is necessary to replace the communications located behind the suspended ceiling or if the baguette is damaged, as well as to dry the ceiling space after flooding from above, the structure must be removed. This must be done correctly, otherwise you can damage the canvas, so all that remains is to throw it away. We will consider the technology of dismantling, as well as installation, separately for PVC and fabric ceilings.

    Dismantling PVC ceiling

    The harpoon fastening, which in most cases is used to fasten PVC ceilings, allows for dismantling quite easily. Here's what to do:

  • As before installation, plastic and wooden objects that could be damaged by heat should be removed from the room. If PVC windows are installed, the frames should be covered with improvised thermal insulation made of fabric rolled up in several layers.
  • Then you need to heat the room with a heat gun to a temperature of +60 0 C.
  • Dismantling the canvas should begin from the corner. The decorative plug is removed, after which you need to grab the harpoon profile with pliers with long jaws and pull it out.
  • Next, you need to put the pliers aside and continue removing the canvas from the baguette by hand. When touched, heated PVC film may leave marks, so you should work with gloves.
  • The canvas on the other sides is disconnected in the same way, each time moving from the corner to the middle of the wall.

    You cannot grab the canvas with pliers - only the harpoon profile: if you grab the film, you risk tearing it.

    Removing the fabric ceiling

    The bead fastening, by which the fabric sheet is often fixed, is generally considered disposable: dismantling and subsequent installation is not provided. Indeed, removing the glazing bead without damaging either it or the canvas, so that the possibility of reuse remains, is quite difficult task. If such a need arises, it is better to contact an experienced technician. The process of disassembling the mount looks like this:

  • In the middle of either side, the spatula is very carefully and carefully driven into the gap between the bead and the profile, after which the profile shelf is slightly bent. Thanks to this, the force with which the glazing bead is held will decrease.
  • The bead is removed using a screwdriver with a curved end. It must be blunt, otherwise high probability You can damage the baguette or canvas.
  • In the same way, the bead is then removed, moving from the middle of the wall to the corner.
  • The cam mounting is much easier to disassemble. To do this, just insert a spatula into the cam and press the moving part with it. In this case, the blade will slip out of the self-clamping grip.

    Video: how to remove a suspended ceiling with your own hands

    A stretch ceiling is a very impressive solution from a design point of view, but the process of its installation, as has been shown, has a number of features. The canvas is quite expensive, so if you lack experience, it is better to turn to specialists. If you still decide to install the ceiling yourself, carefully re-read all the recommendations again and act as carefully as possible.
