Varieties of double-glazed windows and their features

A double-glazed window occupies up to 70% of the window, and therefore is one of the most important parts of modern window construction. In many ways, the technical characteristics of a plastic window depend on the features and quality of the double-glazed window. It is for this reason that the specialists of the Comfort Windows recommend using their professional advice and support when choosing such structures.

Double glazing - what is it?

The double-glazed window is a sealed structure, securely fixed in the window frame. The basis of the double-glazed window is two, three or more glasses with one, two or more air chambers, respectively. Some buyers believe that the more cameras in a double-glazed window, the better. However, this is not always the case. The number of air chambers cannot be considered the main indicator when choosing a double-glazed window. It should be noted here that a single-chamber double-glazed window can be even better in its properties than a two-chamber package.

If the number of cameras is not the main thing, then what should you first of all pay attention to when choosing a double-glazed window? There are three important parameters that the buyer should take into account when choosing a double-glazed window. It:

  • filling air chambers;
  • the thickness of the double-glazed window;
  • the number of glasses in a double-glazed window;
  • glass characteristics.

Let's look at each of these options in more detail.

Filling the air chambers

In order to improve the thermal insulation qualities of a double-glazed window, the space between the glasses is filled with an inert gas or a mixture of several gases. Their high density provides a lower thermal conductivity compared to air. Below we give a table with data on the thermal characteristics of gases used to fill the air chambers in double-glazed windows.

Insulating glass thickness

The thickness of modern double-glazed windows usually varies between 16-46 mm, however, if desired, the buyer can order a double-glazed window with a much greater thickness. It must be said that it is precisely such a parameter as thickness that has a decisive effect on the thermal insulation characteristics of the structure. The thicker the double-glazed window is, the better the window structure will retain the thermal insulation properties. But such a parameter as the thickness of the double-glazed window has a much lesser effect on the soundproofing qualities.

The number of glasses in a double-glazed window

In double-glazed windows there can be a different number of glasses. The level of sound insulation of the room will depend on this to a greater extent. If the windows of your apartment overlook a busy highway or a noisy highway of a metropolis, then you should think about how many glasses will be the best solution for a particular option. Remember that the more glass there is, the higher the thermal insulation properties of the entire structure as a whole will become. And if you need to increase the noise insulation characteristics of the window, then you can choose a design in which the thickness of the outer glass will be 2 mm more than the standard one (that is, 6 mm instead of 4).

Glass characteristics

Now manufacturers of double-glazed windows also offer their customers options with glasses with improved quality characteristics. Let us consider in more detail what double-glazed windows are offered on the window market:

Energy-saving double-glazed windows

Low-emissivity glass coated with soft or hard coating, installed in a double-glazed window, can significantly reduce the level of cold ingress and the outflow of warm air heated by radiators from the room. At the same time, such window structures allow the sun's rays to freely penetrate into the room, contribute to the natural lighting of the room. The advantage of such windows is that they allow apartment owners to significantly save on heating.

Multifunctional double-glazed windows

This version of double-glazed windows has a more complex structure. Their main feature is the selective passage of waves of various lengths through the glass. Among the advantages of multifunctional glasses, it is worth noting the possibility of maintaining an optimal microclimate in the room, both in the summer heat and in the winter cold, and ensuring the optimal level of natural light.

Sun protection double-glazed windows

Their experts recommend installing on the upper floors of multi-storey buildings, where more light often penetrates, as well as in those rooms whose window openings face the sunny side. The main function of solar control glass is to prevent the penetration of ultraviolet radiation into the room. This effect is achieved due to a special tint film applied by manufacturers to the glass surface.

Self-cleaning double-glazed windows

This option assumes the presence of a high-tech coating on the outside of the glass, which prevents the accumulation of dirt and dust on the surface. They are first destroyed on such a surface under the influence of ultraviolet radiation, and then removed naturally, washed off by rain.

Triplex

This type of window is a multi-layer product, which contains several glasses interconnected using a polymer material. This design gives the double-glazed window a high level of strength, as well as resistance to mechanical and various power loads. It is also worth saying that triplex glass belongs to the category of the safest. A special adhesive polymer prevents the glass from shattering if it breaks. This material keeps the fragments inside the double-glazed window.

Noise-insulating double-glazed windows

If double-glazed windows are installed in rooms whose window openings face the side of noisy streets with heavy traffic, then they will definitely have higher requirements regarding noise insulation characteristics. Such structures, as a rule, are equipped with two- or even three-chamber double-glazed windows, in which the glasses can have different thicknesses (from 4 to 6 cm). also they can have different widths for the spacers.

"Smart" glasses

This design option suggests the possibility of changing the optical characteristics of the glass. This structural element of the window can turn from completely transparent to opaque, has the ability to transmit or, conversely, not transmit a stream of light, have a different level of absorption of thermal energy that occurs under the influence of electric current. Smart glass is also called smart glass. It is represented by a rather complex and complex product, which is manufactured using high technologies, according to the most complex schemes. Because of this, the cost of double-glazed windows from such glass increases significantly. But even despite the high price, the demand for "smart" glass in the manufacture of window and balcony structures remains very high. This is due to the fact that it is with the help of such structures that you can create a cozy and comfortable atmosphere in any room.
